Cottage was immaculate throughout with everything we needed.
Perfect location for walks, and yet only 5 minutes from shops and Durham centre

Awesome little out of the way cottages, we had a simple over night stay for a birthday and the cottage was perfect. Extremely clean, looked to have just been refurbished with everything needed for a short stay. Lovely few drinks at the Bay horse infront of an open fire, with well priced excellent food.

Easy to find, and parked right outside the property, easy no hassle check in / out

If I had any gripe which isn’t really a gripe is that they are obviously putting work into upgrading the properties which ours had been and not was lovely, however the parking area was littered with rubbish and off cuts of wood, tiles, sand, cement etc , greggs cups sandwich bags etc and car was totally covered in building dust the next morning when we left.

Altogether a fantastic little quiet break at a very very reasonable price

All in all nice little cottage for a couple and good as was pet friendly to go up Durham to visit our son up uni and take our dog to see him too. Cottage was nice a little place although i think the tv was slightly too high on wall. As we arrived there were 3 plumbing vans parked outside so had to park out side another cottage for bout hour n half till they moved their vans after going in pub at front of cottages before parking own car then outside our own cottage. During our stay all else in cottage was ok other than toilet did not flush well at all we had problems with it , other than that carnt fault our stay. Property had all u wud need avaliable to use also in cottage.

There was no or very little insulation between the rooms, I was able to hear everything being said next door (argument) so I left without using any of the facilities, I didn't stay there and won't be coming back .
The room itself was lovely, but the simple fact there was no way I was going to be able to sleep there meant I wasted my money because it poor workmanship

It’s a beautiful cottage located in a quiet neighbourhood. Fully stoked with all the necessary things for a couple or single person. Suitable for business/work trip accommodation as there is good Wi-Fi and affordable unlike hotels in Durham which are twice expensive or even more. John communicated very well with me prior to my arrival and made sure the heating was on as I arrived around midnight. Clean house, lovely white linen and good pillows. The mattress was perfect for my sleep too. Kitchen was stoked with milk (although I don’t drink milk) it was a nice gesture and a posh coffee machine 👌😊. There is a pub right next door as well with great food.
I would recommend this place to anyone on a business/ work trip or a quick stop by in Durham.

There are many plus sides to this accommodation:-
- Quiet, country location.
- Very good facilities, with nice touches like as good quality glasses, dishwasher, microwave, cooker.
- Clean
- Well heated.
- Good safe parking
- Milk and packet of biscuits on check in.
- Simple and easy check in.
- Discounts for local restaurant.

There are a few downsides:-
- No public transport back from Durham after about 8pm
- Well outside of Durham.
- Sound proofing could be better, however the type of people staying make this unlikely to be much of an issue.
- The TV is too high on the wall and really needs to be either moved down to lower on the wall, or moved to the bedroom. I found my neck got very sore trying to look at it.
- Getting into the bathroom is a bit tight.

I have marked down the score for communication because there was a power cut on my last night and the owner's communication re. this was poor. He didn't answer my phone calls and texts, only starting doing so when I asked for a refund and mentioned I would mention the lack of communication re. this in my review. I appreciate the power cut was out of his control, however his communication did not make me feel like a valued and cared for customer.

John, the property manager, was super friendly and extremely helpful. Other than a pub, there is very little around the property. The room was good for a night, but definitely could have been cleaner. There was also no fridge in the room, which is challenging when the accommodation was for a stop on a roadtrip.

Property needed a deep clean. I sneezed a lot and had black dust come out of my nose. Heating didn’t work sometimes and the room was quite cold. I booked through Expedia and check out said 11 am and I wasn’t told any check out time by the owner. On the morning of check out a cleaner knocked at the door and we shouted we were still inside. I popped to the loo and finished packing my back when the cleaner knocked again which I thought was odd so I double checked on my emails and then clarified the check out time being 11 am with the lady and she responded no check out time is 10 am.

The rooms are motel type in the car park. They are large and very clean. Tea and coffee available in room. My only criticism is that the large rooms do not have a chair of any kind. There is plenty of room for an easy chair and a desk chair. My colleagues room next door didn't have any either.
The food in the restaurant was fantastic. Large portions and very tasty with a good selection.
Would definitely recommend for business or pleasure.

No chef, no alternative catering suggestions made.

Payment was taken from bank account after booking was made even tho confimation was to pay on arriving. Was called 2 hours before checking in to be told that it was cash only, and there was no chef. Not being from the area, asked if any recommendations could be made for something to eat and was told to use just eat. Was left with no way of getting a breakfast, as there was no local cafes etc that opened before 9am, and i had to be checked out and left to be at business course for 9am. Room was adequate, but no desk to do any paperwork.
I understand the premises have recently changed hands, but had i been informed there was no where for a meal(whithout having to get takeout) or to be able to get a breakfast before work, i would have cancled my booking as moved it else where, as the venue was booked soley for its proximity to veune.
From this experience, i more than likely wouldnt use the venue again.

Lovely staff who made you feel very welcome. Really easy to access and cheap in a taxi to get into Durham. Only niggle was, was the beds. The base on one was unsteady and the other 2 the mattresses were awful. The single bed actually bruised one of the guests due to the springs petruding and the double bed had such a big delve in one side you couldn’t lay on it.

Stayed for three nights and found the place clean and the staff very pleasant and accommodating. Unfortunately, there was no chef so the restaurant and pub meals were not available, but they would allow us to bring in takeaways. The breakfast was amazing, so food I magine would have been good. The room looked as if it had been recently refurbished and was done to a very high standard. Unfortunately, the room had no natural air flow. So, on the first day on coming back the bed covers, and clothes were damp. We could not open a window due to it being on the ground floor and the noise and smoking was taking place outside in the car park as the pub patrons were using it. We solved the issue for the rest of the stay by leaving the ensuite door open and extractor fan running during the night and day.
Would have been close to 5 stars if the chef had been on and they dealt with the air flow situation. But I would stay here again.

Good points - Hotel was easy to find. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Room was spacious and comfortable with en suite, TV and tea making facilities. Breakfast was cooked fresh and it was hot.
Bad points - No central heating, we had to rely on a plug in radiator. No hot water at the sink, TV went off at 8.15pm and wouldn't come back on. Entrance door was loose fitting in its frame and rattled until I wedged it shut. Walls so thin we could hear very clearly what was going on in the room next door. We had booked for Bed and Breakfast but had to pay extra for a cooked English breakfast (there was no mention of that on the booking confirmation).

Coming back home to go to a family funeral is always a really sad time .The 180 mile journey from Staffordshire was a bit tiring ,so to receive a nice welcome on arrival at the Bay Horse was appreciated.signed in and then went for a tour round the village where the wife and brother in law were born.I've always loved coming up to Durham,the people are so friendly and helpful and you can always have a laugh.Our one night stay over here was very good.The food at the evening meal was lovely .Two of our relations were also staying here and we all had the meal together and every ones plate was empty.last time we were up we stayed at well known motel and paid an awful lot more and to be honest the Bay horse was as equal in comfort and cleanliness but loads cheaper.and you get a lovely continental breakfast. We'll be stopping here from now on

You only get what you pay for

Heating did not work properly so room was cold ,1 bed was fine the other bed was very uncomfortable all you could feel was the springs coming through the mattress . You could hear the refrigeration unit buzzing all night long .The doors let a lot of noise in. The room had not been thoroughly cleaned

All in all a cheap hotel but I would not stay there again

A bit disappointing

The people running the place we’re really nice. However the overall impression of our stay was let down by the condition of the place. There was an insect in our bed and a spider in the bath tub. The sink needs renovating. Some lamps need bulbs. And the continental breakfast choices could be improved as it was very basic. Literally just toast and cereals. The place is quite off the road too.

The accommodation and the pub were basic. It was cool during the very hot spell which was welcome. It could have been cleaner - with lots of mould around the shower area and the carpet could have done with vacuuming..

We had to ask for a toilet roll and the room was clearly only serviced on the day prior to leaving - biscuits appeared and an additional toilet roll!

It was unfortunate that their had been a flood and the kitchen was not able to be used so we were unable to eat our evening meals in the restaurant - which we probably would have done. Breakfast was very basic with toast and cereal, tea or coffee and choice of 3 juices. It was described as 'continental breakfast' which led to to expect fruit, yogurt and maybe even pastires! This was not to be. As with other reviews I saw, they need to invest in some decent coffee

We used the room as a base for exploring so didn't spend a lot of time there.

Door frame wasn't finished, no towel rail or toilet roll holder and there was a lip between bedroom floor and bathroom floor. Breakfast was very basic and no signs to show where to go. We had very noisy neighbours which cannot be helped, bed was a bit hard and the showers were adequate, hot but not powerful, curtain stuck to you, no wifi available. Breakfast included was only continental which was cereal, toast and juice, tea and coffee. if you wanted full cooked then that was extra 3.95 didn't ask if you wanted items on full cooked just gave you plate with items on it.
Doubt we would use again, nice but not as expected.

\nOK for a budget hotel

New owners (?) who are trying to upgrade this accommodation. The room was warm (snowing as we arrived); it was clean; the bed was comfortable. The breakfast was adequate. Perhaps the toast could be provided without butter enabling the guests to apply the amount that they need. Other things that may help include refreshing the sealant throughout the bathroom; sweeping up cigarette ends on the outside of the rooms - these appear to have been there for years; a little bit of Tarmac to fill holes in the car park. The location is a few miles from the city centre which means that the car can be parked OK. A bus to the centre costs £3.60.

Their was no food available at night as restraint closed for 3 weeks but I was told I can tell you where the take away is. The breakfast is falsely advertised as included Continental ( their meaning of continental is a bowl of cereal and a glass of juice) ?? I stayed in room 9 the towel radiator gave no heat only on the bottom rail so no heating in bathroom. the ceiling has black mould above shower cubical and the silicone sealant was black around the shower tray. They advertise WiFi This was not working as this had a supplier change and no one knew the new pass words.

Traditional pub in a quiet location

Comfortable accommodation and very peaceful, good restaurant and a pleasant breakfast.
Limited parking space but on street parking is free.
The public bar could benefit from some modernisations.
All in all ‘ok for the price’.

Great Staff,\nDetermined to make you happy

Door would benefit from a draught strip around it,
Laminate Floor made it feel cold- but spotlessly clean.
Air was very dry

Lovely cosy room and friendly bar and restaurant

Lovely room in courtyard. 10 rooms and we were in number 5. All you need and clean and tidy. Staff in bar and restaurant were really nice and helpful and locals created you with a smile and were keen to speak to you. made you feel welcome. Paid 3.95 for full English breakfast and worth every penny. It was huge and so tasty. We will defiantly be back again.

The room was a reasonable size & clean. the staff were very friendly & welcoming.Good selection of ales in the bar.My only gripe which is a shame really,was the aerial in the bedroom did not work hence no TV. I would not hesitate to stay there again.
