Food was disgusting. Apparently this is not the norm their usual chef was off and they had problems with the oven . We did receive a 20 % discount for the food.
Old building which is lovely but can hear toilet flushing in another room . The room was clean and very small . The bed was hard.

Relaxing 4 night stay.

This is our second stay at the Fox and Hounds. The staff are very welcoming. The food is excellent, with an extensive choice available. The room was clean, and well presented. There was a good supply of tea bags, coffee, hot chocolate and bottled water, plus shower gel, shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom.
Very dog friendly too!

Lovely spacious room and friendly, helpful staff. Beautiful location with train station nearby. Great breakfast.
Our only complaint was that rooms at the far end of the hotel had zero Wi-Fi, although I'm sure this will be fixed soon.

We were shown to our room which we booked a superior room and on entering it there was lots of blue bottle flies everywhere in total 11 of them so we had to get them all out of the room then when they have cleaned the room they had left all the rubbish in the bin from the previous occupants plus they had put the bathroom rubbish in it as well plus there was poo in the toilet. The Wi-Fi didn’t work in the room or even the rooms next to us as we heard someone else complaining about it. Lack of routers seems to be the problem, food wasn’t bad but had better for the price they are charging ie home made pie had pasty top as thick as a doorstep and the burger was the smallest burger I’ve ever had although it was tasty and it was supposed to be in a locally baked bread bun but it was just a small bun you would get from Tesco in a pack of 6. Didn’t top up the tea and coffee condiments properly had to go and ask for sugar from the bar and didn’t leave any bottled water on our last night of stay. The bathroom was nice but the shower screen on the bath is too small as when you have a shower the bathroom floor get soaked. They rate themselves as 4* B&B but really it’s a just gets a 3* and only just gets that. Would we stay again, well no not for the price as it’s not cheap and when you pay for a superior room you expect more.

After arriving a little stressed from previous accommodation, I had a friendly and professional greeting and was grateful my room was ready early. Staff were extremely helpful offering use of the drying room for my drenched clothes!
The cosiest room in a lovely pub, spotlessly clean, plenty of tea/coffee supplies and a great view.
Dining was great too, lovely breakfast and dinner.

We were underwhelmed by our stay here. I thought that with all the wonderful reviews that the food and accommodation would be nicer then it was. We were in a room on the bottom floor, and you could hear the patrons conversations and footsteps late into the night and first thing in the morning. The food was average too, as was the service. The grounds are stunning though, and give you a great feel for the beautiful Yorkshire Moors.

Very very nice pub. Good atmosphere and good food. The room was quite nice not particularly modern but nice enough. Spotlessly clean, roomy and a huge comfortable bed. One thing that would make a big difference is swap out the main lightbulb (one of those that takes time to brighten up - found the whole lighting a bit depressing and old fashioned and so easy to fix). Decent lighting required. Also the shower water pressure wasn’t great, trickle then bit better then a trickle again also hot for a bit then cold then hot again- needs sorting. Unexpected charge for dog. Don’t mind paying but would like to know at time of booking. Having said this only £10/night for two dogs so an extra £30 as we were there for 3 nights. I would recommend

A lovely location on the North York Moors.
The room was clean with a good range of teas/coffees in the room.
The staff and the guests were all friendly so there was a lovely atmosphere in the bar and dining area. It is a dog friendly pub and although I don't have a dog it was nice to be amongst well behaved dogs.
The food was delicious with a good range of specials. The Yorkshire breakfast is a great way to get set for a day on the moors.

Fox & Hounds - great for a mini break

Parking was fine on site and check in was easy. Warm friendly hotel. Staff were lovely and very attentive. Very dog friendly throughout which is great.
We only stayed for one night so decided to eat in the restaurant. Food is ok, but overpriced for what it was. Wouldn’t eat there again.
Breakfast is included in the price, and again was ok but nothing special.
Room was warm and just big enough for two adults and one dog. A bit dated, but had everything we needed. Bathroom looks refurbished, but shower runs hot and cold. Bed a little uncomfortable, but was quiet and fine for one night. Think for a longer stay it might not suit.

A Good Quiet Place To Stay

The room was clean, although dated in that the heating only came on at certain times and the TV reception was hit and miss. The breakfast was good and adequate, the restaurant food was also a good choice and filling and staff were lovely.
Overall a nice quiet place to stay, with no banging doors or annoyance from any disrespectful guests.

Stunning area, perfect for walking and great location for the Moors and nearby coast too.
Lovely warm pub with nice atmosphere but our bedroom (Room 4) was very disappointing. Booked a Standard Room and we couldn’t even unpack our luggage (nowhere to lay clothes out), the television glitched unless you supported the aerial and neither of us could properly fit in the shower, it was so small. Shower pressure too was very weak and temperature very temperamental. Other rooms may be better but they should not charge a standard room rate for an economy room.

Great pub with rooms

Very clean, light and spacious room. Bed was huge and comfortable. We arrived a bit later than planned and the bar was busy, cosy and atmospheric so we wished we'd got there sooner! Ate in the pub that night and the food was all really good. The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful.
It was close to Roseberry Topping and the north yorkshire coast, both of which we visited. Overall a really nice place to stay

why do we keep returning to the Fox and Hounds?

We have a visit to the Fox and Hounds every October and there are good reasons why we return. The pub is charming and a good vibe in the bar, especially when it gets chilly and the fire is lit. The food is delicious and they cater for my garlic allergy. The bed is huge and comfy with a lovely view from room 2. It's in a good location for exploring the moors and the coast. The staff are friendly and helpful.
And most importantly is dog friendly. We can't imagine anywhere better.

The perfect stay!

We had a wonderful short stay at the Fox and Hounds, could not have picked a better place in the North York Moors National Park. The scenery surrounding the pub is spectacular and it was showing itself off beautifully when we arrived. It is so quiet and peaceful around, just gorgeous. We received a lovely warm welcome, shown to our rooms and given lots of useful info on the way, so we could just relax and enjoy the views from the windows of our rooms. Room 3 has just the most glorious view of the countryside in particular. We settled in, had a little wander around and then had dinner in the bar. There's a beautifully laid out dining room, but as we had our pooch with us, we ate in the bar area. It was buzzing in here, locals and visitors, such a warm and friendly atmosphere. Service was fantastic, such a friendly and efficient team, nothing too much trouble and very attentive too, checking everything was ok for us, which it certainly was. We had great food, wide choices on the menu and blackboard specials, all very tasty and pub sized portions enough for us all (and some for Sam too!). All reasonably priced and a fantastic selection of drinks too, especially wines. It is so quiet here, we slept like babies, room spotlessly clean and everything we needed. Millions of stars, as no light pollution. Breakfast was fantastic, made to order, as well as buffet cereals, fruit etc choices, tasty and plenty of options and all tables laid out beautifully. Just wonderful!!

Great location, disappointing B&B based on reviews

Great location and traditional old pub. After reading all the amazing reviews I was expecting great things which I’m sorry to say it did not live up to. I did not get a warm welcome on arrival as busy serving at the bar and they do not have a reception desk. Room was spacious but the furniture was old and cheap and mis-matched. Bath mat was badly stained even though clean and should not have been used and towels were poor quality and very thin. Bathroom was modern but sink vanity unit was far too high making it difficult to use and it lacked the finishing touches. No shower gel or shampoo offered. Breakfast was only offered between 8.30- 9.30 which is a very small window and early on a sunday and my cooked breakfast was brought to me whilst still eating my cereal and no offer was made to take it back to the kitchen until I had finished. The staff I saw are very young and appear inexperienced which doesn’t help. On checking out I had to
Go the kitchen to find staff to hand the key in and found them chatting. Given check out was 10am, which is very early, someone should be visible and available to hand keys in. The rooms are not very well soundproofed due to the age of the building and could virtually hear conversations in the next room. It’s a shame it didn’t live up to the expectations and I was very disappointed and would consider other B&B’s before returning here. The area and location is great for visiting Whitby and the surrounding area and lots to do.

A superb pub-hotel

Fabulous pub-hotel in a wonderful little hamlet, set on the edge of the North York Moors. The food was delicious, at breakfast and for dinner, with excellent choices and daily specials. The dining area, bar area and snug were all very well decorated and comfortable. There was a good choice of beers and my partner enjoyed the cider.
All of thd staff were brilliant and there was such a welcoming atmosphere. I would thoroughly recommend this pub-hotel, especially as a touring centre and for the wonderful walking around the area.

One night stay

Thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay. Check in and welcome were good and we were shown to our room. It was quite a long walk but well worth it as the room was lovely. The bathroom was large and spotless with a shower over the bath. The room looked out over a gravel car park. We had an evening meal which was excellent. There was a good choice on the menu with specials on the blackboard. The breakfast was good, the full English was cooked to order and it was hot. There wasn’t much choice for cereals or fruit by the yoghurts were delicious. The service was good, very friendly staff and very happy to stop and have a chat. We would certainly be very happy to return to The Fox and Hounds for a second visit.

A cosy country retreat!

We were made to feel very welcome here. The staff were lovely and excellent for providing information about the area. This was our first holiday with our dog and we were a bit nervous about it but the Fox and Hounds turned out to be a great spot for Jeff and he had no problem settling in.

The room itself could do with some updating but as it is an old building and the bed was very comfortable, we weren't too fussed. It was a little noisy in the mornings as you could hear other guests and the staff moving around.

We could eat our dinner and breakfast in the pub with the dog which was very handy. The dinner options were vast in terms of choice and very hearty but slightly overpriced so we only ate there on one of our evenings. Breakfasts we felt were much stronger although we would have liked a wider selection with the continental buffet and perhaps some more options with the cooked breakfasts.

We had some difficulty with cleaning Jeff after our rather wet walks. There is no shelter outside so when we tried to dry Jeff before taking him in, it was near impossible.

Overall, this is a lovely spot to explore the North Yorkshire countryside and we'd be happy to return when the weather improves!

Couldn't rate this hotel highly enough.

This hotel was all - round excellent. Great location, fantastic views, excellent breakfasts and spotlessly clean. This place was probably one of the best places I have stayed. It was very unique, it was great to see the stars clearly at night time too. Very peaceful. Thank you, it was a pleasure to stay at the Fox and Hounds.

3 night stay

Lovely quaint away from it all pub. Some limitations due to ongoing refurb. Disappointed with room. Shower cubicle too small to use. Even a young child would struggle. Bed comfy. Very clean. Didn’t feel a warm welcome however housekeeper Amelia was lovely and gave us a key for a shower room Didn’t see owners at all over 3 days. Food lovely and menu prices very reasonable. One morning after waiting 15 mins to be approached at breakfast table I helped myself to glasses from bar for orange juice. Slow and disorganised 2 out of 3 mornings. I hope the owners take note and supervise staff. The staff just need some direction on customer service and basic hospitality duties.

Friendly and cosy atmosphere. Food and service is excellent. Restaurant was being renovated but that did not detract from our stay as the staff had everything well organised for breakfast and dinner (and lunch!). Room could do with a bit of upgrade, but very clean which was most important.

Great Pub

We stopped for two nights. We ate in the pub on both nights. We had a fantastic stay, this is a great, cosy, traditional pub in the beauty of Yorkshire. The room had everything you need, it wasn't the most modern room but no complaints. I like the little touches like a full-sized mug and the Decaff coffee bags. The first night the heating was on a little too much, it's on a thermostat and was a little warm but it wasn't too bad, as it was so cold outside. Some fellow guests we met one evening said their bed was rock hard, but, we had no complaints, my wife said it was a little lumpy on her side but I really didn't have any issues.
The pub has plenty of parking around the back; where you can see they have some Glamping Pods. It is currently undergoing renovations in the room between the main bar and the dining area, which, had recently been painted and looked very nice. Allround, the pub was in a great location to be far enough out of Whitby but close enough, it only took 25mins to drive in. There is nothing around the pub, we walked to Danby the first evening but that hasn't not much in it either. However, it is perfect for walkers and those with dogs, we use it just as a base so we didn't mind and it was nice to be out in the countryside.
We ate twice, both nights. Friday was busier in the pub, we did book but no need, as they had plenty of tables. We sat in the background for dinner and breakfast on both days.

Break in the country

A lovely break away in the country but close to the seasides we wanted to visit. Easy to check in room was large as was bathroom tea /coffee/water and biscuits which was a pleasant change. Staff were very friendly breakfasts were fine toast would be better with thicker bread and brought part way through you cooked meal. We had meals at night in the restaurant a good choice and enjoyable. It was easy to go to places from here although some of the roads we used were winding but lovely views, there are some walks nearby although we didn’t go on any. A very pleasant stay and we are planning to return in the near future.

Highly recommended

Absolutely loved our stay at The Fox and Hounds Inn. The area is so pretty and peaceful with beautiful views. The accommodation is about a 15 minute walk from the train station and is mostly uphill so take some walking boots.
The staff were all so helpful and friendly, as were the locals (and the dogs) in the bar.
Our room was spotless and we received clean towels in the morning even though we were only staying 2 nights. Our room was on ground level however it was at the back of the building so up and down a lot of stairs which wouldn’t be suitable for disabled access as there isn’t a closer/back entrance (as far as I’m aware)
The restaurant was very popular and got quite busy on both nights of our stay, however the service was still spot on. Would recommend booking a table for evening meals. The food was also very nice, although some of the dishes (starters and some of the main dishes) were more on the expensive side for the serving size, however, we still really enjoyed everything and would definitely recommend.
Overall, a lovely place to stay and it’s on our list to visit again

This is a lovely very old pub in a beautiful rural setting. There are fantastic views of the moors in all directions, which are literally within walking distance. This is a great base from which to explore the moors and the coast from Scarborough through Whitby to Saltburn. Even the drive along the lanes is a pleasure. The pub is very cosy and comfortable, with a very good selection of well cooked light and substantial meals. The staff were absolutely superb, all so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. This is one of the best places that we have stayed at, we shall return!
