It is a wonderful historic building, but very run down . Some parts, eg the listed ballroom is closed needing roof repairs. Threadbare carpets, although bedding and towels changed each day there was poor bathroom supplies. I believe it is for sale. So fingers crossed because it’s in a good position with a car park. No resturant, or bar snacks. There is an excellent Spanish tapas restaurant round the corner.m and Peaberry a few yards down the street great for breakfast.

Check-in was simple, parking only £5 for the night, found our room on the second floor, overlooking the road. Room was spacious, clean and tidy, it was quiet warm in the room. Slept ok until the road noise kicked in and the collection of bins full of bottles from the nearby bars.

Although I paid for a Junior room, all we got was extra space.
The bed was a small double and the mattress didn'tfit the bed base, the mattress over hung, room was cold with no carpets. Only one plug in the room which we found when we were leaving the room.
The shower was too low, my partner is 6ft, he couldn't have a proper shower.
We could hear every noise outside and its a busy road. Hardly slept, won't be staying again.

The only good thing is the room was clean & the parking was cheap.

Considerably past its best was the immediate impression on arrival. Room was adequate and clean. Can’t though believe they didn’t know the somewhat antique TV in the room didn’t work and had clearly not been plugged in and used recently. Also that their USP - secure parking in the middle of Shrewsbury - comes at an additional cost of £10. Stated elsewhere, but not alongside the sales blurb in a fully open way.

Sadly this historic hotel is in need of complete refurbishment. The carpets are worn, mismatched and date from 1980s. The shower was rusty, the mattress was so old you could feel the base through it, and the tv didn’t pick up many channels. Generally shabby and clearly not refurbished since it apparently housed illegal migrants in 2022. A real shame as it’s in a prime location with lots of original features.

Lovely hotel with some lovely features - bar for example.
Central location - middle of the town, way walking distance to train station.
Our room was spacious and clean with tea and coffee.
Bed comfy.
The whole place just looked so tired. Black mould on our bathroom ceiling, aged taps and bathmat . Room was a little chilly probably due to metal frame window.
The price, service, location were great, hotel itself although was very clean, was just very very tired.

Historical, traditional and lovely hotel. Ideal, central location for Shrewsbury town.
Looking forward to seeing breakfast and a bar back at the property to give it a soul and a purpose. Main areas needs carpets cleaned and/ or changed just to complement its heritage and charm.
Comfortable room: toasty and warm plenty of hot water,( as snowing outside) with toiletries and tea making facilities.

Warm, lovely sized rooms, great service, nice biccies, parking, the joy of sleeping in a breathing historic building. Full of history, charm and character in the charming Grade 1 listed building! 3rd time I’ve been and will happily becoming again when In Shrewsbury. Close to town, pubs, the river, shops and the city centre.
Even Charles Dickens stayed her many MANY years ago!

Clean room and quiet location as requested. Quite a few small flights if steps to room but no mobility probs for us. Great hotel atmosphere. Only issue was radiator would not turn down/off and heating on 24hrs. Could open windows so quiet enough area not to disturb us. Good value onsite parking. Not reservable and limited spaces but excellent for us. Very atmospheric & friendly hotel. Will stay again.

The Lion Hotel mirrors the Tudor vibe found throughout Shrewsbury. Since then it’s had a refresh in the ‘70s (1970’s), and the management has spared no expense to maintain the Fawlty Towers character of the period, complete with shower curtains and a shower at chest height. An ideal place for the older generation wishing to take a trip down memory lane or show grandchildren a glimpse of the previous century. Whatever the case, you won’t be cold as the heating is very effective. And no need need for a kettle either, the hot water is hot, hot, hot….

Receptionist at check in was disinterested. Wasn't told the heating in room wasn't working. I only found out when i went to complain the room was cold. I got given an temporary heater. There was excessive external noise from the street outside as windows did not seal closed. no secondary glazing. So with noise and cold drafts coming in the window. Even with curtains closed and heater on. Didn’t make any difference. Checked out early and cut trip short.

This hotel has so much latent potential but needs considerable investment. I stayed for 1 night and had to change rooms because of an incessant humming sound in the room coming from the cupboard/wardrobe. When I went down to reception, they said this was a common problem throughout the hotel caused by the old plumbing system. The second room was okay but was very dated with a small TV and very limited coffee in the room. If you're really on a budget then this place may suit but, from experience, a little bit more money gets you a much better hotel in Shrewsbury. On the plus side, the staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel's location was excellent. It just needs a couple of million pounds spending on it to make a gem.

Building has some interesting history - enjoyed the hearth and sitting room in the main lobby.

Location was excellent, inside the walled centre of Shrewsbury town. Walking distance to pubs, shops and restaurants.

Would have been nice to have a hotel bar and breakfast available at the hotel. But having said that the surrounding streets offer a vast range of bars and eateries so get out there and explore.

The Lion Hotel is in the centre of Shrewsbury with local shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs within 5 minutes walk. Railway station is about 10 minutes walk.
My room was quiet at the back of the hotel. Only issue was there was no lift working in the hotel and shower was very difficult to control to achieve the right temperature.

The hotel is a very old building and has lots of character, I only stayed one night but i would stay her again. The room was bigger than I expected with an on suite bathroom and tea & coffee making facilities. The hotel has a car park but make sure you arrive early because it fills up, the hotel also charge £5 per night to park but you are right in the centre of Shrewsbury. The hotel has a bar but does not offer breakfast and this disappointed me and is the reason I only gave 4 stars. The mattress in the room was very hard and I found a little uncomfortable the hotel also does not have a lift but bearing in mind the age of the building I understand adding a lift is not possible.

The pictures are an utter lie. I think they must have sold off the antique furniture, leaving the room a total mystery with lights in odd places. No place to put clothes other than the closet. The WiFi was abysmal, sometimes working, sometimes not.
The front desk has no cash, so if you need to break a note into coin, forget it.
The parking charge is reasonable at 5£ a night. However, they no longer offer breakfast, so you must find something open- and the coffee houses close by aren’t open until 9 am.

We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful, historic hotel and, whilst Shropshire Council parking instructions are at best, confusing, the hotel does have parking but it does get busy. The room was clean and had everything we needed. We enjoyed having tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer and fan.

It was a great hotel, but its a bit sad now.

My bed was lumpy, stairs a bit tatty, with worn carpet. Room was clean and towles white and fluffy. Water was hot. Tea and coffee on hand. I didn't ask aboit food, ut read the dinning ro was closed, so you need to ask , parking an a first come first served behind the hotel staff frendly day and night.

Location and ambience are great, and on-site parking always a plus. Disappointed that you have closed your kitchen, so no breakfast, and the plumbing is third-world. The worst part was the horrendously squeaky bed! This needs attention. I suspect the Hotel is now fighting a losing battle with the passing years, so go there while you still can.

So this is an old building that hasn’t been refurbished any time recently but everything works, it was clean and had all we needed. For the price it was good value for money, less than 10 mins walk from the station. Plenty of history inside and staff were lovely. Shower was decent, WiFi worked fine.

It simply is no longer a full service hotel and is only staffed to a bedroom booking only level.
The Expedia site did not make this clear at any time.No meal service including hot drinks or breakfast. A bar in name only,no bar staff.
The rotating front dek staff were as helpful as they could be,especially Sebastian, but we should have been aware tgat yhe oroperty was on care and maintenance only.
A pity,as the location was super and the ancient property itself must have been fantastic when it was operational.

The faded splendour of this wonderful building made me think carefully about its restoration. The good things were the pleasant and helpful staff but traffic noise and disturbance from other guests was a problem. Car parking was awkward so I scraped my car. Sadly in spite of its central location, I would shy from recommending The Lion to other travellers. It needs a lot of money to bring it back to life again. Internet poor, no food, single bed ok.

This fantastic hotel is a real gem, situated in the heart of lovely Shrewsbury and would make a great base for explorers enjoying all the local amenities. The Lion Hotel reflects the environment; quirky, an architectural gem filled with ancient and beautiful furniture pieces, an historic idiosyncrasy still resplendent in faded charm. Not for the fussy or fastidious traveller. This would be for Hogwarts lovers and those seeking individuality. Fabulous comfortable half-poster bed and luxurious bathroom with masses of piping hot water. No breakfast available, but super delicatessens within a minute's walk gets you up and out too! Very reasonable parking fee and dogs welcome. We will come back as often as we are able.

The hotel itself was clean and staff were friendly, no mirror by the one plug in room to do hair, but room was ok and bed was good,
i did book two rooms and even though booked the rooms they put us on totally different floors, no lift so my mom had to climb eight sets of stairs just to her 3rd floor room, she recently had stroke so this was not appropriate, Asked at reception why we were on different floors. just to be told that’s all they had got even though booked weeks prior, they said couldn’t change her room as they had none spare then proceeds to say if room were needed to be together i should have rang them and stated but surely common sense would automatically tell you i’ve booked two rooms i expect them to be together or at least on same floor,
The staff didn’t even try to help us sort another room, so we swopped rooms with her instead, although we struggled to climb that amount of stairs,
Would i return to this hotel my answer would be yes if i could not get anywhere else,

Low cost hotel but the room & bathroom was clean. Clean sheets. Pillows were a bit large, I like thin pillows, the second pillow in the wardrobe was better. It was warm weather and slept with the window open, not sure how warm this room would be in winter though. Curtain blacked out all the light and the shower was powerful. Not modern, a bit tatty but to be expected and priced right. Priced competitively really. Car park small fee, but still in budget price range. I'd stay again but it's not something I'd look forward to.
