This comfortable establishment nestles in the picturesque village of Matala, on the south side of the beautiful island of Crete, just a stone's throw from the sea and a few kilometres from the ancient ruins of Phaistos. The chalk caves at the far side of the beach are a must to visit.
Each of the 70 bright rooms has its own balcony overlooking the sea, mountains or caves, and all have en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning and telephones. The hotel restaurant overlooks the caves and not only serves traditional Greek cuisine but also international dishes.
The traditional villages in the vicinity are well worth a visit, and Matala is the perfect starting point for outings and excursions to the many archaeological sites, and football, scuba diving and horse riding can also be practiced. Matala is about 70 km from the capital, Heraklion, i.
e. , about one hour by car or taxi.

Free parking should be removed as an amenity. There is one small parking lot that holds about six vehicles and the front desk told me that they don't verify if the cars parked there are guests of the hotel. When we went to leave, there was a car blocking every other car in the lot. I spoke to the person at the front desk and they said it was the owner of the hotel and he would tell her to move. When she did, she walked right by us and didn't apologize as if we weren't there waiting to get our car out. Afterwards, the owner of the mini mart across from the hotel came out and wanted to move his car (which was also blocking people in) into our spot. He seemed very annoyed that we were taking a while to load our luggage into the car and getting situated to leave. In short, it seems that the parking lot is being used for employees or random people going to the beach; it's not really reserved for guests. Plan on parking very far away.

Location was perfect for easy access to the area. Parking was surprisingly easy knowing the area but it is a small lot so I could see it being difficult at times. What I am most disappointed in is the room location. It was on the backside of the hotel next to the swimming pool so no great view. I asked and rooms facing the street with balconies are not available on hotels.com, they must be booked through the property directly. The photos are a little misleading. If you’re okay with a small room and no view but a great location, then this place is not a bad option.

Zafiria is an average hotel located in a very touristic area, which is the only reason for it's baffling longevity. The room was small and the swimming pool was right outside our window door. Now that was awful. The breakfast at the hotel was probably the worst we've ever seen. The buffet was poor to say the least. On the other hand, the hotel staff was very polite and helpful, which was refreshing!

It was very convenient to walk to everything we needed. Unfortunately we had a room across the road & it was above their coffee shop, so it was noisy early in the morning. The shower needs attention as we were unable to attach the shower head so had to shower with one hand. There was a fridge in the room, but no kettle. Breakfast was included, but very basic.

We always stop at this hotel when we are in matala.Very friendly staff that speak good English.There is a lift to all floors.Best bathrooms in Crete with modern shower cubicles.Rooms cleaned everyday and great view of sea and caves from the balcony.Double glazed patio doors onto the balcony that keep out any road no ice.Great buffet breakfast with a good selection of food.The only thing I can think of to improve this hotel is a kettle and tea and coffee making facilities and a t.v.

I had a wonderful stay, ok the hotel could do with a little makeover, i dont think its changed that much in the last 30 years but you cant fault its location in this lovely little town and the staff were polite and helpful and the room was kept very clean. Will be staying here again hopefully.

I absolutely loved this hotel It is basic but perfect- just two twin beds, bedside tables and a desk but it was super clean and had a good bathroom. Our balcony had a table and chairs and an amazing view of the Matala caves and the sea. It is right in the village so you can walk to lots of restaurants and shops and one minute to beach. The little pub attached was showing soccer when we were there and it was fun to sit and watch with the other guests. They also have a restaurant across the street and the owner gave us a coupon for free wine! The only downside is the parking lot which is small and some idiot was blocking the entrance. You can park across the street for 2 euros a day though so not a big deal. The pool is gorgeous and the warmest one we found in Crete. I wish we could have stayed for a week and I plan to go back one day!

We went to the Matala beach festival, so we wanted somewhere close by that didnt involve walking too far. Zafira Hotel fitted our requirements perfectly. The accommodation is basic - hard beds, no TV, drab décor. Difficult to get the attention of the staff at reception - they were more interested in phone chats with friends that in giving customer service. Hotel is well located in the town and close to the beach.

Das Hotel befindet sich im Zentrum von Matala und die Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten wie Höhlen und Strand sind leicht zu Fuß erreichbar. Es gibt gute Einkaufsmöglichkeiten und sowohl zahlreiche Souvenir Shops als auch Restaurants. In der Nähe vom Hotel sind einige kostenlose Parkplätze und ein privates Schwimmbad mit kostenfreien Liegestühlen. Die Frühstücksauswahl war begrenzt, aber immernoch ausreichend. Es gab keine Wi-Fi Verbindung im Zimmer. Das Bett war hart und unbequem. Die Kissen waren zu dick. Das Badezimmer war klein und eine Tür in der Dusche hat gefehlt. Von Anfang an waren die Pflegeprodukte nicht vorhanden, aber man konnte sie an der Rezeption nachfordern.

Es war sehr zentral und praktisch gelegen. Leider war das Bad veraltet und das Waschbecken nicht ganz sauber gereinigt. und hatten Silberfische im Bad. Ansonsten waren die Zimmer in der Etage mit einem großzügigen Balkon ausgestattet und hatten gute/ standard Betten. Wer kein Problem mit der Lautstärke hat, wird mit einem Blick auf die Bucht belohnt.
