Amazing hotel! Wasn’t expecting them to have just beautiful grounds and an onsite nature reserve you can hike for a small fee. Staff was extremely nice and room views were amazing! Would 100% come back!

Hotel is in a great location, but if you are a light sleeper you may want to ask them to not but you to a neighboring guest. Since walls are super thin. We had nobody next to us the first night and it was great! But second night a lady was talking on her phone all night and we could not sleep. But on the positive side their night walk tour at the property is totally great! We saw a lot of cool night animals and insects and their staff at the restaurants were really friendly and kind. You should try their Brownie with ice cream at their restaurant.

Lovely hotel with really nice staff. The location was walkable to different restaurants and activities. The property is really hilly but the shuttle was fantastic and very convenient to get around. We really liked the pool and enjoyed the balcony on our room - both were great for spotting wildlife and enjoying the breeze.

Staff were overall fantastic and would say they were 10/10.

However for the price we paid, there were some things that weren’t that great.

The rooms were pretty bare, and had scratches all over the walls and broken window blinds. And staff would generally be working right outside our window so it felt a bit intrusive at times.

The rooms were also quite loud and the way the buildings are made cause of a lot of echo so you can hear every conversation going on.

Charming cottage-style property with basic amenities: restaurant, 24-hour gym, souvenir shop, and a partially open “indoor” pool. Food is nicely presented, like elevated pub fare. No luggage room and late check-in at 3 PM. Soundproofing is poor—you can hear neighbors and hallway traffic. Clean, friendly staff, and great views. Good for families or young couples, but not a luxury stay.

The hotel is over a large area, fortunately we were located near reception and the breakfast area. There are shuttles on demand that take you to the other areas of the resort such as the pool, restaurant and canopy/night tours.

The food at the restaurant was excellent. we found the breakfast buffet to be average, with the exception of the made to order omelettes which were excellent too.

Monteverde is much cooler than the rest of Costa Rica so provided some rest-bite from the heat for a few days. The excursions at the hotel and surrounding area are the main attraction as the small town was quiet.

Very disappointed. Our room had a strange odor and turned out the toilet wasn’t working. Requested it fixed, next day still wasn’t working. Finally requested we change rooms for second night which is a pain and mostly annoyed that zero credit has been given for first night. Response at front desk felt very dismissive and unapologetic. I never leave a bad review anywhere so wouldn’t post if I weren’t truly disappointed with lack of willingness to rectify.

Do not stay at the El establo hotel in Monteverde. It’s a beautiful location but Bad service and no maintenance. I am not sure why they charge so much when they don’t have the basic services for any hotel. It was an awful experience. Especially with the kids. Our room had no Tv, wifi. Washroom didn’t have proper waterflow for showers or toilet. The hotel has no elevator and the staff don’t help with the suitcases. The rooms get really hot during the day coz there is no AC. The pools are not maintained. There was no pool towels. The list goes on and on.. never again!

This was one of the most uncomfortable hotel stays I’ve ever experienced. There’s no AC, no heater, and absolutely no bathroom ventilation. The building’s design makes everything worse — the hallway acts like an echo chamber, and the bathroom window literally faces the hallway, so you can hear every single person walking by. Even with the bathroom door closed, the wind howled through and rattled the door all night.

Both windows — one in the bathroom and one in the bedroom — are placed very high up, and although they’re small, there’s no practical way to close them. And even if you could, the lack of ventilation would make the room stuffy and uncomfortable. The bedroom window also lets in constant noise from outside — animals, wind, and more — making sleep nearly impossible.

To top it off, the bed creaks loudly with even the slightest movement. Every time I got up to use the restroom at night, the noise woke up my sister who was sleeping next to me.

Also, skip the breakfast — it’s extremely overpriced at $25 per person and absolutely not worth it. You’re better off eating elsewhere.

Overall, it felt more like camping than a restful hotel experience. I didn’t get a decent night’s sleep due to all the disturbances. If you’re looking for peace, quiet, and comfort, I strongly recommend avoiding this place.

A great location near downtown while staying in the middle of nature. The property is full of wildlife and all of the staff is super helpful. Breakfast is delicious and definitely recommend the banana bread! Austin the bartender is great, we visited him for a few happy hours. While you’re there check out the spa and excellent way to recover from zip lining! The property was larger than expected so we were thankful for the shuttle to get us around. One flag is that there was no AC in the hotel rooms but at night it cooled off.

booked an ocean view room expecting, well… a view of the ocean. What I got was a major letdown. There is absolutely no way you can see the ocean from these rooms – it's way too far. It honestly felt like a scam. If I had known, I would’ve just saved the money and gone with a standard room. They really shouldn’t be advertising these as “ocean view” unless you’re actually seeing the ocean.

The hotel itself is massive, overall beautiful!

Another issue was the lighting in the room. There was barely any natural or artificial light, which made the room super dark, especially in the mornings when trying to get ready. Not ideal at all.

On the brighter side, breakfast was really good and the staff were very friendly. But check-in took forever.

This property is a great place to stay but it definitely needs an upgrade. It's like stepping back into the late 70s and 80s. The views were amazing and the activities they have on the property are great but do costs, and as much as you wanna belive that all Central America is cheap, Costa Rica is not. So be ready to shell out the cash for extra curricular activities as if you were back in the US.

This property is set on a mountain and gives a very nice nature feel. Check in was very nice. Lunch, including vege options was very good. Breakfast was also very good. On the hand room had very dim lights, very limited furniture. One lamp was not working and required two calls to get it replaced. Only one soap - for hand was or shower. No body wash or lotion. Only shampoo; no conditioner.For breakfast you have to drive down for over a mile depending on your room location.

El Establo is in great location with it own private hiking trails at an addition cost. Great views from the rooms.
Access to you room building is via their shuttle buses so at times there can be upto 20 minutes.
The roads going upto the buildings is very steep .Great workout if you are in good shape.
Buildings have two floor with no elevators which can be difficult if you are traveling with elderly family as we were.
Make sure you let hotel know prior to arrival you need ground floors.
Bathrooms are dated but in good condition, and there is heating or AC in the hotel.Very basic toiletries are provided.
No iron on property let alone the rooms.
Breakfast is not the best if you are a vegan or vegetarain
and buffet items are not labeled.
We had a family medical emergency in the middle of the night and the one staff member on duty was very helpful.

Hotel with a beautiful view! There is an observation tower at the top of the property for great sunset views. The restaurants had great food- nice to have right on property. Only downside was no air conditioning (spoiled, I know) and the wildlife was quite loud early morning since windows were open. Would stay again!

The room we booked showed a beautiful view and a balcony and the room we were given was a ground floor with no view and no balcony. The hotel has no A/C and travelers should be aware. We could hear the other rooms talking. The staff offered no luggage assistance although they knew the room required we carry the luggage down several flights of stairs, The reception staff stated that we should have emailed them and requested a better view and balcony. I would not return to the property.

Dining was overpriced & they tried to cheat us too, but luckily i spotted it. so be on guard.

The property is beautiful with nice rooms and great views. But the rooms are a little old-fashioned - for example they have small/key-locked safe boxes instead of modern electronic safes. The hotel is also not particularly convenient as it is built on a very steep slope, meaning that getting around the property is by \"shuttle\" vans. (Believe me, you will not try walking this more than once - and even then, only downhill.) The ONLY way to request a van is to call reception, and the line is often busy, particularly during busy times, like breakfast. You are on hold and then it arbitrarily cuts you off and you have to call again. I also had TWO very bad experiences with the lunch/dinner restaurant. Two sandwiches, at two different meals, contained foreign/inedible objects. One sandwich included avocado skins (not slices) and I had one sandwich where melted cheese on the sandwich was still attached to the paper in which it was packaged. I was still forced to pay for these sandwiches. All they offered me was a free -- but at that point entirely unwanted - dessert. DO NOT EAT AT THE RESTAURANT. Finally, be aware that the property is very popular with large bus tours, so breakfast is a circus.

Quiet, beautiful. My kids were able to see agouti, coati, and all sorts of birds from our balcony in the mornings and the staff was very friendly and enthusiastic about teaching them about the animals. One of the restaurants had a great little nature walk below the terrace so the kids had a great time running around while we waited for the food, which was also delicious. The hotel was well located so most of the things we wanted to do in Monteverde were a short drive or even walkable. Would stay here again!

The hotel grounds are very beautiful, full of trails and a lovely pool and restaurant. The rooms were not good. The first room smelt like it had been flooded and the carpets had not been lifted, we requested a change of rooms. The second room was better, but very sparse. There was one chair and no side table, so the only place we could sit together was on the bed. It just felt very sterile. Also only one bed had a blanket and it was cold when we went. The restaurant was really good and the bar service was very good l.

The property is literally on a mountain which gives a great experirnce and opportunity to spot some mammals in the backyard of your room. The room which we were in had issue with the shower and also hot water was limited. If one takes long shower we had to wsit for hours to again get hot water.

Resort is very tired and has begun its descent into shabbiness. Our first room had a torn screen and a badly damaged carpet. They switched us to a smaller room of same type that at least had intact screen, but stained and pulled carpet. Gym was okay. No A/C. Loft of our room got very hot.

The carpet was dirty and shredded, the doors were lopsided, the fixtures were broken, the windows didn’t have a screen over them to prevent bugs from coming in, which is a big deal because the hotel doesn’t have air conditioning. The property and rooms were in extremely poor condition and needs a complete renovation in my opinion!

Needs improvement:
-Poor sealing of doors and windows so noise from cars, other guests and the smell of gasoline from grass cutting filtered into the room
-The bed made a creak as if it were going to break. Quite annoying to sleep on.
-Poor quality TV
-Quality and quantity of food vs price at Laggus restaurant was hard to justify. Overall, a lot of food in the country is expensive.
-Slight sewer smell when flushing toilet. Possibly leaking through screw holes attaching toilet to the ground.

Entrance is convenient to get to from the main road (paved road) as opposed to other hotels in the area where road to the entrance from main road is not paved. Good nearby dining options.

Absolutely gorgeous property, landscaping and gardening. Beautiful grounds and pool. However, the rooms we had and buildings really need renovation and updating. Our carpet was stained and torn. The windows need replacing. The worst part was the bugs. We found multiple on the beds. We made the most of it and enjoyed it but a cockroach running away from the bed frame before I laid down was tough. The problem is they leave the hallways open to the environment, which is fine, but then the rooms have plenty of gaps for bugs to enter. This may be no big deal for most people and, if so, this place will be amazing for you. The bugs just make it hard for us to be comfortable. If they could do some renovations and fix the big problem, it would be the best place in Monteverde. Again, so charming outside and everywhere else. The breakfast was also good.

Avoid! WAY better options available for less.

They tell you all about how eco friendly they are and how much they care about the environment and yet they still use the little plastic single use shampoo and conditioner bottles as well as the little plastic wrapped bars of soap. Their restaurant staff was absurdly rude. They took over 40 minutes to bring us our overpriced food that was barely room temp when it got to us. It was so obvious that it had been sitting for at least 10-15 minutes. Then one of the dishes we ordered was off; it had some sort of weird bitter smell and taste so we sent it back and they still charged us for it anyway! Terribly uncomfortable beds that were hard as a rock and no climate control of any kind. No heater or AC which ok not an issue really given the location but also no ceiling fans or or table fans either. Those cost almost nothing to install or have available and even less to operate. The way the property is set up, you HAVE to drive your car or take one of their gas shuttles all over the property because it is so spread out and up hill. The property is very large with a beautiful pool area. It was also nice to have a gym. Staff were excellent, we did the night walk and saw some amazing sights.

We did a night tour right on the Property which was lots of fun and saved us driving to another location !
Had breakfast included, which was an excellent buffet with lots of food Options .
Had dinner two nights all the food was excellent and a reasonable price point for what you received.

We had a fantastic time at the hotel. The staff was extremely friendly, polite and helpful. Ideal for families with young kids. We were able to organize the tours once we got to the hotel. We are waiting to go back!

Good stay outside of town.

Hotel was comfortable. Grounds were very pretty and room was convenient with three beds for a family of four with two teenagers. Nothing nearby to walk to so need a car. Pool was ok but smaller than we expected. Nice view.

The resort is very good with lot of in-house activities and tour desk to organize local attractions. But property has no elevator and AC. Though the outside breeze is good enough but at time it can become very hot during the day. Need atleast a ceiling fan and brighter lights in the room. Room is big with nice canopy view. Restaurant has limited menu choices esp. for vegetarians. Friendly staff and well maintained resort with complimentary breakfast and free parking. Provides free shuttle to go inside the property. Overall good experience except the inconveniences mentioned.

They said we had a $25 resort credit, but we could only use it at the restaurant or bar at the pool. So we used it at the pool, but at checkout, they said we owed $25 because we got drinks during happy hour, so the $25 resort credit did not apply to that. No one told us that and the guy at checkout was totally unapologetic. It's not a big deal, because it was only $25, but the rudeness of the staff and lack of clarity about the report credit policy was not appreciated. If you happen to have a resort credit, probably best not to use it or just assume they will find a way to not apply it.

Beautiful eco lodge with gorgeous views and excellent location to national park and other attractions. Very comfortable beds and loved the fresh air coming in from the windows. Saw lot of animals and birds from room balcony too. Highly recommend!

If you stay at this hotel, you will have the access to some of the tours reserved exclusively to those who stay at the hotel but not people from outside hotels. We were able to have tour guides just for the two of us during a day walk and the zip line. Also there will be shuttles that pick you up in front of where you stay to take you to the tours, which are inside the hotel, in a few minutes. It is super convenient and I highly recommend. There is also a spa place inside the resort.

This is the most awesome hotel. The view was incredible. The staff was amazing. They gave personalized service and totally remembered who you were. There were excellent tour opportunities on site and very knowledgeable guides. The only issue was with the Expedia booking. We specifically set our flight times through them and the airline changed our flight which made us cut our stay by one day to allow us to catch our flight at 6 am.? It was very inconvenient. If you can get to this hotel it is the best!!! I rate the hotel 10 out of 10.

We absolutely LOVED our stay at El Establo! It was one of the highlights of our trip. The grounds are incredible, the view from our room (we stayed in 908, so we were the highest possible vantage point on the property) was unbelievable. When we woke up in the morning, there was a rainbow and its arc was below our balcony - it's that high up in the clouds! The pool area is amazing - so luxurious and quiet. The food and drink options are great. We did a night walk on site with Donner and it was incredible. We saw glass frogs, tarantulas, snakes, olingos and birds. He was knowledgeable, entertaining and great with our kids. It is an easy drive from the hotel grounds into the heart of Monteverde to walk around and explore. Cannot recommend this hotel enough!
