We stayed in the house attached to the property and it was a pleasant surprise. Everyone was very nice and the views were spectacular. I would love to come back and spend the week here. My only issue was the fact that the curtains don’t really blackout the light so when the sun comes up, it wakes you up because the entire house was very bright, but having all the windows overlooking the bay, made it worth it.

Amazing stay. Fresh cooked to order breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. They went out of their way to make our stay amazing. We looked out over Kalk Bay. The town was welcoming with lots of food options easily walkable. We will be staying here again when we go back.

Great for a family stay in the centre of Kalk Bay

Great location, easy walk to harbour front, bars and restaurants. We had the comfort suite, which was seperate to the main guest house. It was very, very spacious, with wonderful views from the master bedroom/lounge on the first floor. It was cold whilst we were there. There is a log burner on each floor which you can purchase firewood/lighters for at reception. This was a must for the cold days. Breakfast was delicious. Staff were friendly and helped when needed. Security were visible but made us feel safe.

This place is divine! A beautiful old house, lovely decor, spacious, incredible views, great location, and really lovely staff! Freshly ground coffee delivered to your room at a time you choose each morning was a great touch. I fell in love with Kalk Bay - what a gem of a town. And I'd highly recommend staying at Chartfield to anyone looking to visit Kalk Bay.

Lovely staff and a very friendly welcome. Hotel has a lovely feel to it - amazing views and lots of lovely light.
Generally cleanliness was great, apart from our bath in the room hadn’t been cleaned from the last guest so that wasn’t nice.
There is a lovely pool area, but the covers on the sun loungers are looking quite sorry for themselves and need replacing really.
It was also rather unusual to have a double bed made up… but with two single quilts.

Even with these few elements not being up to scratch we still had a lovely stay and felt it was good for the price we paid.

Loved this place! I rented the loft room and there was a breeze, big windows and a fan, so I had no issues with it being too warm. I slept with the balcony door and windows open and it was lovely listening to the waves as I fell asleep.

Breakfast was delicious! Hot tip: If you book directly with them, it's included. Really enjoyed the complementary coffee brought to my room.

The location is fantastic. I walked to Dalebrook tidal pool and snorkeled there and later I walked to Kalky's in the harbour for delicious supper.

No doubt I'd return here, it was just fantastic. A big treat!

This was my second stay at the guesthouse and once again I received a very friendly welcome. Nice location, rooms are clean and bright. I was attending training held at the guest house and the food and service was great. Love the pain au chocolate and pastry twists with our coffee .... not to mention the cake on friday! great location, great people, lovely stay.

We are so lucky to have found this beautiful hidden gem of a guest house in Kalk Bay. The service was absolutely exceptional. Lisa and all the staff couldn't have done enough for us and made us feel so welcomed. The breakfast served at Chartfield House is incredible. We ate here every morning for our two week stay. We loved it so much will be definitely stay here again.

Great location in Kalk Bay. Light sleepers beware!

The guest house is located close to the bars / restaurants / shops in Kalk Bay. The access point is up a inclined path - so might be tough for the less mobile traveller.
The guesthouse itself has incredible views - a lovely spot to sit and watch the ocean / have a few drinks. Simple facilities but does the job for a few nights stay. They provide beach towels and umbrellas for the guests. My towel was not the cleanest - I found some bird poo when I unrolled the towel.. this could have been bad luck from when the towels were dried!
I struggled on occasion to find staff to buy water from, or to check out for example. It feels like the ‘front of house’ still needs some work.
The rooms are simple but fresh and good size. There were a few stray hairs on the bedding, but nothing too major. Bed was a good size and comfortable for 2. The main issue I had was the noise. The doors do not block any sound from the corridors, and the stairs / floorboards are extremely creaky. The guesthouse offers a complimentary tea/coffee from 7am - 9am. Between these hours I could hear the drinks being made, and the staff stomping around to deliver these to the guests. This might not bother everyone - but for me, a light sleeper, it was quite an issue.
For these reasons I would say the guesthouse would serve you well for a night or two.. but I wouldn’t stay for much longer!

We recently stayed here and very much enjoyed ourselves. The rooms are nothing too fancy, but clean and decent size. We found the bed/pillows to be very comfortable- and the bathroom is quite large. The breakfast is very good, and I would definitely recommend it. Most of the restaurants in Kalk Bay seem to have a very similar menu, but as the hotel breakfast is a flat rate, it's more affordable. Plus the view is gorgeous from the back patio where they serve it. The staff was very polite. The pool is a good size and in a quiet area. We thought the location was perfect. Far enough from the main strip to be quiet, but it was literally at the end of the street- so very close walking distance to the other restaurants and bars. (Be warned, it is at the top of a steep hill though. So if you have trouble with stairs, this might not be the place for you) Wifi is not great though- and we even purchased it for our room. Its pretty slow and drops out a lot- but we found that to be true in a lot of places in South Africa. But even with that, I would still stay here again.

Amazing guesthouse

I love this guesthouse and never want to leave. It is simple yet elegant and everything is done with love and care. My room has three large windows that all have an amazing view of the sea. The breakfasts are delicious, healthy and ample. I will return here the next time I visit South Africa!

Good position - but.....

I don't know whether it's Expedia's fault, but when I re-read the listing just now on which I based my one-night booking, I confirmed my suspicion that it said there was 'Free Internet' - meaning in my room to me - and there was 'Free Parking' which I assumed was on the hotel grounds.

On arrival, I was informed that the free Internet was only in the public areas, and the 'free' parking was just on the street outside, which might not actually be available, and certainly was not secure. The fact that I would have had to pay for Internet in my room if required, was hidden further down the page doesn't impress me very much. While Lisa told me this was because of some customers in the past misusing it to download movies and using up the bandwidth, I still believe it should have been highlighted. At the same time, I could also understand people misusing it, because the TV available in the rooms is awful: I'd certainly suggest the hotel arranges for a DSTV basic package because SABC is rubbish, and e-tv isn't much better!

Otherwise, the hotel is fine and in a superb position to enjoy the excellent Kalk Bay attractions. Being up the hill you get a lovely view of False Bay from your room and the walk back up from below can be well overcome with some alcoholic refreshments from the Brass Bell restaurants.

One minor gripe - I'd suggest the management provide coffee and tea making facilities in the rooms. Lukewarm cappuccino at 07:15 isn't very nice.

We loved the beautiful guest house and although accommodated in an adjacent facility, still enjoyed a lovely stay. The adjacent facility was new and not completely family friendly - no WIFI or television. Also needs more kitchen utensils being a self catering apartment. But overall beautiful.

The views and the staff were both great. But we had two real problems - first the unit was freezing. We built a fire, but that only helped warm up one bedroom. Also, the family upstairs (permanent residents we think) were extremely loud. We aren't usually very picky - but it was extremely loud, from running and jumping kids to playing the piano - you could hear every little noise loudly. Also,one of the bedroom windows had a broken lock and thus couldn't be locked.

We stayed in room 1. Only downside really was hearing every footstep from the room above (I know, not much they can do about that). Breakfast also was extra (R120 pp) when booking indirectly...free if booking direct with the guest house.
Location was great for seeing the sights. No evening meal option meant eating out which was ok.
All in all, everything you need and I suppose you don't really spend too much time in room anyway (well, we don't tend to).
Oh, wifi was extra to (250mb foc, they more available at a fee)

Very rude staff. Could not find the 2nd room we booked, and blatantly told us that we will have to phone Hotels.com to sort it out ourselves. Eventually the booking was found but with a wrong first name? Admin error?...No introduction given to what facilities are on offer at this hotel? Our 2 rooms were allocated in 2 opposite areas of the Guest House. No effort were made to ensure their guests were happy and comfortable. Luckily the Guest House had a great location for shopping & restaurants & pubs...which made up for our rude welcoming.

Chartfield Guesthouse was a very pleasant surprise and a great escape from the hustle of Cape Town. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. We only stayed two nights ( it was winter there) but I would stay longer during the summer months if the opportunity arose. It is close to the center of town and all restaurants are within easy walking distance. The Olympic Cafe is a must!

Nice place very reasonably priced

I stayed here with a cricketing friend for the Newlands test and it was a good for our requirements. The staff were always helpful and couldn't do enough for their guests. However I do think it is more of a couple's place and was always thinking how much my wife and I would have really loved to visit together. There are rooms inside the main building and rooms situated separately, which could be a nuisance due to all the locking and unlocking of doors (though I appreciate it gave greater security). Personally I found the long, long steps up to the hotel the only potential cause for concern, as it was dimly lit and sometimes people hung around at night. Kalk Bay is nice and charming and is a real seaside town with some very good places to eat and it has some fascinating shops (if you like antiques/memorabilia the shops are great to spend time browsing). The train journey either up to Cape Town or down to Simon's Town is very interesting and it was always safe (though I didn't travel on it after dark as per advice). Simon's Town is really beautiful and the beaches along there are stunning.

Warm welcome on arrival, plenty of advise on where was great to go out and eat locally. The room was a little creaky with the wooden flooring and every movement of those above us could be heard. Having said that the bathroom was nice and spacious with a great powerful shower. Breakfast was served on the outdoor patio overlooking the ocean which was a great start to the day and with plenty of choice too.

The staff was pleasant upon our very-late-after-hours arrival from the USA. We were worn out from our long flights and were welcomed with a comfortable room and quiet accommodation. The guest house was centrally located in Kalk Bay making our walks to restaurants, shopping and even church on Sunday morning very convenient. I would recommend it to a friend.

A Fantastic Place to Stay

We had a wonderful stay from start to finish at Chartfield. The decor is fresh, contemporary and very stylish. The rooms are very comfortable and spacious with fantastic bathrooms (large bath and large separate shower with full water pressure and constant hot water). Florian and his staff were fantastic and he was a fountain of information. I really couldn't recommend this place more highly. Stay here!

Chartfield Guesthouse review

Chartfield Guesthouse probably had the most immaculately clean room, I've ever had the honour of staying at - they really do have an attention to detail. Service wise they were also great - offering me extra assistance to dry out my wetsuit and making me a cappuccino late in the evening. The view from the room over the Kalk Bay harbour was also great. The Guesthouse is in easy walking distance to the restaurants on the Main Street. Note however that the Guesthouse does not have off-street parking (and the roads are relatively narrow) nor does it have a back-up generator when the electricity supply is disrupted (happened while I was there). They do provide you with a torch which is cute but really I expect a guesthouse to have a backup electricity solution. Regardless I enjoyed my short stay and I think its great value at the price point - will definitely consider visiting again.

The Guesthouse You've Looked for all your Life!l

Chartfield is beautiful. Usually I imagine how I could have decorated so much better -- not at Chartfield. The fishing village of Kalk Bay is like a dream. Great restaurants, gorgeous views. The staff is marvelous -- try to meet each individual's needs. While we were there they had an open house for the neighbours. We had the delight of meeting local people and hearing about local activism during the pre-Mandela days in South Africa and now.

Beautiful little spot in a stunning location

We adored Chartfield, our room was simple and lovely, the owners clearly have good taste. Very comfortable bed, large bathroom with a corner bath and separate shower. Everything spotlessly clean. The hotel is in a lovely, quiet, safe, residential area and has views of the ocean and harbour. Breakfast was delicious, everything you could want and they even do a good flat white. All the staff I met were very friendly and helpful.
If you are a party-lover then this might not be the spot for you, but if you like a calm, serene, beautiful environment then I would definitely recommend, but I would suggest hiring a car if you want to go into Capetown itself on a regular basis as taxis would add up - 300-350R per journey.

I thought that the hotel rating of 4 stars was exaggerated. The guest house is 3 star quality. The beds were very uncomfortable. The breakfast is also very expensive for local travellers. We had to pay R120 per person for breakfast. We opted to go to Wimpy and spend R150 for two people.

We stayed at the guest house for a week before Christmas 2014. The guesthouse was selected on the basis of its listing on Expedia and it more than lived up to its description. Located on a hill overlooking Kalk Bay, the guesthouse is the ideal (for us) combination of a quiet retreat within a very short walk of the harbour and a wide range of restaurants. The owners and staff are always available and helpful, but never hovering. A most pleasant stay and we would be most pleased to stay there again.

Fantastic introduction to South Africa

This guest house was our first stop in SA and was way above our expectations. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was wonderful. The only thing to note is that this guest house is on quite a steep hill and there are a lot of stairs. Being very near Kalk Bay station provided easy and cheap access to Cape Town.

Kalk Bay, gorgeous stay

We loved Chartfield's- fresh and funky home away from home. Great room, comfortable bed, lovely view. Breakfast was amazing even though the town had a blackout and the team were cooking with gas and candle light! Would stay again in a flash. Kalk bay is a must and we'd especially recommend a morning swim at one of the tidal pools (very refreshing!) such a beautiful setting.

Unbeatable location, but....

Location steps away from the arty shops and restaurants in Kalkbay main road, yet away from traffic noise is unbeatable. Excellent complimentary morning coffee (Illy). Hotel itself very nice sensitive conversion of the old building, but this results in a significant variation in ambiance between the various rooms that should be noted by future travelers. We booked two rooms, number 9 - pleasant, well laid out and spacious mountain facing room with sea view too and number 2 - a odd shaped compromised layout with bed squashed into a corner, the TV placed in a unsuitable position, awkward steps down into the bathroom. Breakfast not included in booking was offered at R100pp, yet in-room guide indicates non-resident guest welcome at R80? Also note no \"Free parking\" on site, but all outside in very narrow street.

We had two rooms both of which were very comfortable. The service was outstanding and the breakfast excellent. Kalk Bay is the jewel of False Bay and the nearby restaurants were very good especially the Olympia Cafe. Outstanding value for money and we all agreed we would return. Parking is an issue but they were very helpful when required.

Chartfield is in a lovely location

We had a great stay with Chartfield and have recommended it to my family, who is going their in a few weeks. Parking was quite a problem. It is a family run guest house, and most of the staff was very gracious, however, one of the members clearly doesn't like her job. The couple who own the property were just wonderful.

A Really Romantic Place

A very romantic place where they really pay attention to the details. A 25 minute drive from Cape Town center, next door to Muizenberg beach, 20 minutes to Boulders Beach and 30 minutes to the Cape of Good hope. Parking is on-street with a car guard. Stairs go down to the coast and a charming street full of shops, restaurants, and cafes. Plenty within walking distance. Our room was modern but still romantic and was clean and comfortable. Our room, \"Jenny,\" had a view of the ocean, the mountains, and the fishing boats that was lovely. We saw whales swimming by one afternoon. Plug in heater in the room. A bottle of local wine and of water provided in the room for a reasonable fee. The staff was courteous and helpful. The hotel has plenty of comfortable sitting areas (one inside with a fireplace and reading materials, some outside near the pool, and one on the patio with blankets in case it gets cold and binoculars to watch the whales). Breakfast was excellent and there were plenty of choices for several nights stay. I highly recommend the eggs with truffle oil. Coffee was also excellent, made from an \"illy\" coffee machine. A free coffee service was also offered each morning where you sign up the night before for a specialty coffee to be delivered to your room at your specified time. Overall, I loved this B&B and would recommend it to anyone looking to have a romantic getaway.

wow, what a place!!!

what a fantastic place. all of the staff was extremely nice and helpful, breakfast was amazing. the room was beautiful and very clean with great vviews. kalk bay is a bit farther from the city than my wife and i expected, but so worth it. would highly recommend to anyone and hope to stay there again in the future.

Very cute/clean b&b at reasonable drivable distance from Cape Town (V&A Waterfront) and very good price. Nice view of ocean and Table Mountain from adjacent balcony (not from room as only 2 rooms face the ocean). As 2 women traveling we felt very safe even when out after dark (as it was winter season and darkness game early). Staff were very welcoming and rooms cozy. Private washrooms were great and in room safe was a real bonus. Breakfast was good but would recommend bakeries or cafes near by (cheaper and better selection). TV in room and wifi available for low cost .. Would highly recommend! Staff were very accommodating.. Warm packs were also prepared every night for guests to stay warm during chilly winter months. Complimentary hot beverages we also delivered to the room every morning at time requested. Loved our stay!

Kalk Bay Stay

The hotel was beautiful and in great walking distance to the shops, restaurants, and trains in Kalk Bay. However, to do anything outside of Kalk Bay you need a car for this hotel. The staff is poor at helping you with cabs and arranging activities. They frequently will quote you the most expensive option instead of giving you choices. Otherwise they are very friendly and welcoming.

few thoughts about our stay

We went for a few days to visit Cape Town with my girlfriend and when we arrived I thought its very far from the city itself, but in the end we realized it was a very good choice. <starting in the morning with a good breakfast and a cappuccino on the outside terrace with a magnificent view of the sea and the kalk bay. The guesthouse is very cozy and warm, the staff were very friendly and helpfull, overall a very nice place. There is even a train connecting kalk bay with cape town, we never took it though as we had a rental car.

Chartfield, Kalk Bay - a charming place to stay

We already know the area and Chartfield suited us very well. I loved the old-fashioned idea of complimentary tea or coffee being brought to the room, but a small fridge and a kettle would have been useful (I like to make a hot chocolate at bed time!). The room was very comfortable and spacious. The breakfast was excellent and it was lovely to eat it outside - the view over False Bay is spectacular. The manager was very helpful and gave us a lot of useful information about what to see, where to eat etc.

chartfield house 4* I don't think so

I can only assume that the other reviews regarding this hotel were written by friends and family of the owner.Our stay was mid winter in Cape Town and as the room was quite old and draughty with high ceilings and wooden floors thank goodness they were enjoying a very warm spell for mid winter.There was 1 very small heater that wouldn't have warmed a room a 10th of the size.We arrived late evening and were let in by the night watchman who was extremeley pleasant but as you have to request shower gel and hairshampoo!!! we could not have a shower.The next day we finally managed to find someone to ask we had a shower but as there wasn't a mirror in the room only in the bathroom I had to go and borrow 2 extension leads so I could get the hairdryer to reach from the only available plug in the bedroom to the bathroom mirror.I see this place is said to be minimilistic I would change that to done on the cheap.Parking is a nightmare as there is no parking on the premises.There are no tea or coffee making facilities in the room so this is only available in the morning in the lounge.I actually live in Cape Town and am regularly asked to recommend places,needless to say this wont be one I recommend!!!

room in the sunshine

we stayed in a beautiful room that had the warm sun streaming in most of the day - the simple but comfortable white bedding and the view outside the two windows (one of the beach harbor and the other of the oldest tree of its kind in south Africa) made it cosy and rather romantic
If going in winter do ask for the room in the sun that looks out to the big tree - you will not be disappointed!

Very very good value for money - do not look elsewhere. Nice touches include hot water bottles at the bottom of the stairs to talk up to your room at night, cute detailing in the room and lovely friendly staff!

only caution is the stairs in the lovely old house...there are a few of them and they are steep - but will be no worries for anyone other than the chronically unfit!

Superb location

The guest house is elevated above the main road in Kalt Bay and enjoys views over the harbour. Our room was number 6 and had a covered view of the harbour, Simonstown and the sea. The staff were extremely friendly. The lounge area had lots of comfy seating and was kept warm with a log burner.
The bedroom itself was warm and had enough storage space for our belongings. The bathroom was enormous with a separate walk-in shower and a corner bath. There was plenty of hot water and the lights in the bathroom gave off plenty of heat. Both the bathroom and bedroom were bright and airy. We had a lovely, complimentary hot drink brought to our room each morning, ordered at reception the previous evening.
The breakfast offered was innovative and tasty with plenty of choice for everyone.
The guest house arranged for our transport to the Cape and we had a very interesting tour around Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope, Simonstown (including the Penguin Sanctuary) and the surrounding vineyards. We saw baboons, impala and ostrich. The driver was interesting to talk to and showed us much we would have missed on our own.
The train ride into the centre of Cape Town was approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes at a cost of around £1.50 return.
Fishoek is the next stop along the line and the beach here is lovely and sandy, with a cafe right on the front. The bay is lovely, with picturesque views along the shore line. Seals abound in the sea all around here and a Southern Right Whale was spotted by my husband on a fishing trip, (on a trawler).
The harbour had 3 fish restaurants, of which we tried 1.

Loved this guesthouse!

We absolutely adored the Chartfield Guesthouse. The accommodations were lovely, the staff wonderful, the view was beautiful, and breakfast was very good. Parking was a little awkward, but we much preferred staying in the quaint town of Kalk Bay instead of Cape Town. We can't stress enough how nice the staff was! If you are planning on seeing Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula area, this is an excellent location. Highly recommended!

Chartfield - Lovely guesthouse

Came with high expectations and wasn't disappointed. Service was friendly, rooms were lovely. In hindsight maybe would have wanted to stay closer to Cape Town city centre, but that's just us. If you want a lovely guest house in a beautiful location, this is it.

Great Stay In Cape Town

The Chartfield Guesthouse was a wonderful place. The staff was wonderful and very helpfull. The breakfasts were great and very reasonable. The location was nice about 15 miles from city bowl but great places to eat within easy walk. The one thing not so great was parking. The street at Chartfield Gatesville Road is two way and narrow with cars parked on one side and two way traffic using one lane with a curve and hill going north. So one morning I pull out going north and a car is coming up the hill not illegal as I was told but they did not have the Right of Way. They should have backed down the hill and let me thru but I ended up backing up hill around a curve to pull into an empty spot to let them thru. So I learned and strongly recommend to park on Anderson Street 2 Blocks South of the Chartfield because then you can get down to M4 Main Road on a Street that is truelly one way. Much less wondering if you will encounter traffic blindly.
But still a very nice expierience I stayed 2 weeks and would stay there again rather then closer to city.

Doesn't worth it's 4 stars

Staff extremely nice and helpful but the place acording to me doesn't with it's 4 stars. The room offerd a very nice view on the harbor but it was cold even with the radiator on. We stayed in many places where 2 single beds were put together to make a double bed but at Chartfield Guesthouse even the sheets were single bed's size so we were just cold all night long and had to ask for an extra blanket. We enjoyed the complementary coffee and the kindness of everyone though.

Chartfield - great place to stay

I have been travling for almost 6 weeks and the Chartfield Guesthouse has been my favorite place to stay so far. The owners and staff were extremely friendly and helpful with everything.
My flight was overbooked and my arrival was delayed by a day, but they gave me an extra night's stay at no extra cost even though they did not have to.
Breakfast was excellent and all of the recommendations for places to eat and places to go were also great.
If in the Cape Town area again, I would stay there.

One of the most amazing guesthouses I have stayed in. Service was wonderful from the beginning. I LOVED the decor. Very simplistic. Breakfast was delicious and very affordable. We would definitely recommend the Chartfield Guesthouse.
