We were given a room that was not the same room that we booked online and it was quite noisy as it was in the front of the hotel near the road. But they had one more room available in the back of the hotel, which was quiet and allowed us to switch rooms. That was much better. They were very accommodating about that and very hospitable. Very kind staff.

Short but wonderful stay

Excellent! Our first floor room was spacious and well decorated with all ameneties including tea/coffee, fridge, beach towels etc. TV had Netflix etc. More St James than Kalk Bay but only 10mins walk to Kalk Bay. Breakfast was excluded but we just added and the choice was extensive. parking was available just around the corner. Only two comments which did not bother us was that the room had no air-con but was very cool. Overhead fan and open windows were fine. The only other comment its that the road is quite busy and the odd train passes by but we would still definitely return!

The shower was not working upon arrival. The next day, the shower worked, but it was leaking heavily. Also, I dropped a vitamin on the floor. When I went to pick it up, I looked under the bed. The floor under the bed was filthy.

This is a great option for accomodation by the ocean near Cape Town. My room and bathroom were spacious and clean. Staff was accommodating to my arriving very late (after midnight). Parking is a bit tricky but it pays off to be close to all of the wonderful restaurants and shopping in Kalk Bay. I would come back if ever in this area again.

Our check in went well until I discovered they had a wrong name at which point they said the pipes were broken and moved us to a different property. Interesting that when they thought we were someone else, the room was ok. We had to ask about the included breakfast. All was fine, although the new place, not as cozy and not within walking distance of another family members booking made on purpose close by.

This was the second time we stayed in this lovely guest house. Pat, Mike and Nick are very friendly and hospitable. The location is great. We enjoyed walking along the walkway to Muizenberg or to the restaurants in Kalk Bay. The breakfast is also excellent, with a variety of fruit, cheeses and yoghurts, as well as a cooked breakfast to order. We would definitely stay there again.

We spent 30 excellent nights at this guest house. Throughout our stay, we were treated like we were family and better. Pat, Mike, Nick, Alemarie, Joyce and Gladys went out of their way to make us feel at home. Our breakfasts were all great and mostly personalised by Pat or Nick. They all gave us great advice to assist in our daily travel ventures and to keep us safe. Mike saved Maureen's \"life\" with some help getting medication that she had left at home.
We were close (walking distance) to some very nice eating places. Also a great bakery in Kalk Bay a short walk away - brownies were particularly good and it shows on our \"figures\". We were centrally located for what we wanted. There were plenty of UBERS available when needed.
Most of all we were across the road from a nice beach...and to boot we had a beautiful room with a view of the vast ocean.
Thanks so much for a great stay. We will be sure to recommend Sonnekus to our friends and family.

I'm sorry it took so long to write this review. This is a fabulous guest house in Kalk Bay. Your Host Pat is quite lovely and accommodating. The rooms are very nice and the kitchen is well stocked with everything you might need to snack or drink. Delicious home-cooked breakfast as well. Highly recommend Sonnekus House for a comfortable and friendly stay in Kalk Bay.

A truly wonderful experience staying at Sonnekus. Old world charm in abundance with five star service from Pat, Mike and Nick. Cannot think of a single fault with our stay. This truly surpassed every expectation. The thoughtful and tasteful decoration recalling a more genteel age, without being an empty pastiche. We will definitely be visiting again.

Outstanding value. If you like the sea you cannot beat the location.
My favorite beach in the Cape - Danger Beach - is just across the road from
the best surf & water temperature. The addition of private parking made our
stay a most enjoyable return to St James. Important, but less so, is its location
to 2 of my favorite Cape Town golf courses - Steenburg & Clovelly.

I have just returned home to Kona Hawaii after two fantastic weeks in Muizenberg South Africa. I stayed at the Sonnekus Guest House and am so glad I did. I tend to be the sort of guy who is up front and honest when someone asks how something was. In this case, I honestly not think of a negative (or even constructive) thing to add to this review. The house, rooms, breakfast and location are excellent but the very best part of staying there is Pat, Mike and Nick. I felt so at home and incredibly welcome. Pat is very personable, knowledgable, funny, and full of life. I am so glad to have met her and loved being around her! Mike (Pat's husband) is also very personable and genuinely a very nice guy. Nick (their adult son) works with them to prepare the amazing breakfast and a host of other behind the scene functions. He is most definitely a significant part of why I highly recommend this guest house! So, while it's obvious that I was thoroughly impressed with my hosts, the property itself is beautiful. The house has been exceptionally well kept and is very beautifully decorated. This place has quality written all over it from the mattresses and bedding, to the beautiful furniture, bathrooms, living room, grounds and dining room. I cannot recommend Sonnekus Guest House highly enough.

A real gem on the sea

After a month of traveling, we ended our Africa adventure with the warm, wonderful, generous and gracious hosts at Sonnekus Guest House. Our stay was superb. The accommodations absolutely clean and comfortable. The breakfast delicious and bountiful. Most importantly, Pat and her family were a delight...going beyond the norm with their hospitality. Only wish we could have stayed longer.

An amazing stay!!

This was a wonderful experience for us. After travelling around some of South Africa we were looking forward to staying in one place for a few days and couldn't have picked a better place. Pat, the owner, was very accommodating and so pleasant at all times. Nick, her son, was also very easy to deal with and very informative; we even booked a tour with him as guide (through his touring company, TourScape) to Cape Point and that was one of the highlights of our trip. The views of ocean and mountains were spectacular. They went above and beyond and set up an extra bed in our (very spacious) room to allow our daughter to come and spend a night with us. I can guarantee that should we return to St. James we know exactly where we will stay!!

It was ideal to have the option of their ground floor room for her as she struggles with stairs.One suggestion might be the option of an early morning self service breakfast if one is unable to stay for their full delicious breakfast on offer

Simply divine location with free parking , free WiFi and Amazing Breakfast . BIG rooms with great bathrooms . yes slightly old fashioned , traditional style but that homely feel was perfect for us.
Finally as drinkers to have a huge Fridge downstairs full of booze that you access as required and just write down what you take ( honesty bar ) was superb. £3 a bottle of wine WOW! NO NEGATIVES TO REPORT Xx Pat Mike & Nick Thank you x

A sunrise not to be missed

Our 2 nights were comfortable and relaxed - the hosts were accommodating and interesting - breakfast was excellent - conversations with hosts - always eager to help us - provided interesting history of their personal courage and their journey and the building which made us feel a part of the place and the people - the house is beautifully crafted, so well done wherever an eye might land, simple and beautiful workmanship. additionally, has direct beach access across the street - clean, inviting and in a beautiful location. the front porch seems a gallery seat to the world - sunrise there the most incredible we have ever witnessed.

A very warm welcome from Pat, easy and quick check in. Our room (Cowrie) was enormous, the biggest room I have ever stayed in. Totally my style of decor with a big comfortable bed. Views of the ocean were to die for.
Easy drive to points of interest, fantastic sunset from Chapmans peak and lovely dining options.
We loved our stay, only wish we had stayed longer.

We loved Pat and Mike’s bed and breakfast. Pat takes the “breakfast” part of the title very seriously! As other reviewers have mentioned, the spread is great, the service equally fantastic, and we also enjoyed the boxed breakfast to go Pat prepared us when we wanted to arrive at the National Park early one the morning. In all cases we could not eat again until about 4 pm! Both Pat and Mike ensure you have everything you need and are quick to help when asked any question. We would return in an instant. We kept booking extra days after our original 3 day stay. We equally enjoyed the interior room as well as one with the ocean view. They are directly across from the beach and minutes by foot from really great restaurants in Kalk Bay. We strolled on the beach in the morning and watched the tide send surfers right by the window in the Brass Bell in the night. We would recommend this special guesthouse to everyone!

Our hosts were excellent. Very professional and extremely helpful in every aspect. The breakfast was outstanding especially sitting on the verandah watching the world go by and the magnificent ocean. When we made our booking there was only one vacancy as the Guest House was full. Our bedroom didn't have any windows and the bathroom looked out on to buildings close by on both sides. The other rooms apparently had ocean and mountain views. My suggestion is enquire what views your room will have.

Grand Old Home from a time gone by!

This is a grand old home full of beautiful antique furniture, yet at the same time modern and comfortable. Location is in the most quaint, beautiful part of Cape Town with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Possibly a bit far from the CBD for those on business, however if you don't mind a 30/40 minute beautiful drive then this won't be a problem.

Wonderful Guesthouse in Great Location

We stayed at Sonnekus for 11 days. The location is excellent - opposite a beach, St James tidal pool and a walkway. It a five minute walk from vibrant Kalk Bay with its many shops and restaurants, as well as good hiking trails on the mountain. Hosts Pat, Mike and Nick are very warm and welcoming. They serve an excellent breakfast with a varied array of delicious fresh fruit, meats, cheese, yoghurt, rolls, as well as a cooked breakfast of your choice. The house is beautifully appointed in a style that suits the period of the house. Our bedroom (Whelk) had a sea view. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was clean and attractive. Even though Sonnekus is on the main road, the curtains are thick and it was reasonably quiet.
We loved staying there and recommend it whole-heartedly.

Lovely people

Mike, Pat and Nick are lovely people and were willing to accommodate at every turn. Very laid back environment - you can really relax and wind down. Honesty bar is very convenient. It is just across the road from the beach. Mike was very caring and gave me a lift both fromthe airport and back into town with a diversion enroute so thank you very much for this. I would recommend this guest house for groups of friends who could stay in all of the beautiful and different rooms. TV very old but perhaps that is a good idea on holiday when you should be outside taking advantage of all of the natural beauty that Kalk Bay has to offer. I would definitely recommend and stay there again.

2nd time in Cape Town

Stayed at Sonnekus for 4 nights during our stay in the Cape Town area. It is a charming but somewhat retro place.

The location is very nice, just steps from the beach in the front and beautiful views of the mountains on the back. The owners are very friendly and nice people. Kalk Bay is a short walk and have some nice restaurants, cafes and artsy shops.

Apparently due to the road work in nearby Muizenberg, the internet was down. That is a problem for international travelers, but it takes a long time to fix things in Africa when a govt. entity (Telkom) is involved.

Pleasant stay but decor outdated

A brief 1-night stay in March 2015 on our way to Cape Point from the wine country. A nice safe location for walking to dinner, and right across the street from the water. The hotel owners were very friendly and helpful and breakfast was well prepared. With no A/C we slept with the windows open (it was a warm summer night) and there was some street noise, but nothing intolerable. My only real complaint is cosmetic - it's a really beautiful old house but could definitely use some upgrading. The bedding and decor throughout the house had an outdated 90's feel that reminded me of being at my grandparents house. But overall it was a pleasant stay.

Reservation went missing!

The worst Expedia experience ever. I am a frequent international traveler (for work) and have stayed at hundreds of accommodations in dozens of international locations but this was the FIRST time I flew into a foreign city and learnt that the booking, which was ‘confirmed’ from my end (with the usual invoice and confirmation number), was never made.

The owner lady was extremely rude about the situation and kept saying “the on-line booking technology is not infallible, these things happen with Expedia, bookings.com and all those” and said this ‘disappeared booking’ has happened a few times in the past (I wonder anything has been done to correct this issue?). When asked about what I should do to claim a refund, she repeated, “I never took your money”, telling me Expedia is supposed to forward her my credit card details and it never came to her. Why? Who knows. Now I was left to find a hotel room during the busiest weekend in Cape Town (for the Int'l Jazz Festival) at 9:30pm, after all that flying and driving.

Worse yet, I returned home and found that my credit card was charged for this stay that never happened. Oh now begins the fun of trying to get the refund when the hotel says they never took my money. This was supposed to be a relaxing vacation.

We had a wonderful stay at Sonnekus. The owners cannot be nicer, thank you for changing the flat tire on our rental car. We had a superb dinner in the next town and left SA the next day. Sonnekus made it hard to say goodbye. Great location, beautiful room with a view, tasty breakfast and fantastic hosts.

We stayed for 2 nights at Sonnekus. We couldn't believe how elegant the room was. It had a high ceiling, polished wooden floors, a lovely comfortable bed and Pam closed the shutters and curtains for us while we were out at dinner. They had thought of everything including an honesty bar in the dining room.
We ate breakfast out on the verandah overlooking the sea and Cape point. The only negative was the breakfast power cut but they coped admirably under the circumstances. It was a very special great value place to stay.

Better than Home!

Travelling with a three year old to SA for the first time, and a bit daunted by the prospect, we were thoroughly delighted to find Sonnekus, in the very beautiful and relaxed Kalk Bay area of Cape Town. Run with care, thoughtfulness and professionalism by a lovely family team who've been in the area for generations, it was the personal touches and feeling of being wanted guests in a lovely home that really made our stay. The BnB is straight across the road from a perfect fossicking beach, with tidal pools close by in either direction for safe (and chilly!) swimming, and easy, pretty 10 - 15 minute walks to neighbouring Kalk Bay and Muizenberg with eateries and quirky shops. Our large and very comfortable room had an awesome view up at the craggy Muizenberg Mountains, sunbirds feeding outside every morning. Brekkie was bountiful and delicious and the honour bar was a great idea for parents having to be back in the room early evening. Owner Mike is also a registered and very knowledgeable tour guide. We spent two full days exploring, learning and laughing with him, and experienced much more than we would have on our own. Thank you Pat, Mike and Nick, you made our South African adventure Jol!
