5 nights family getaway

Overral impression is okay. Service is a main point of concern. During the lunch time in the lobby area after having main courses and salads we were not allowed to share a single pot of tea for three of us. We have been forced to buy 3 pots of tea instead: one for each of us. In the meanwhile during all 5 breakfasts we had there, every time we asked for tea there was only one pot served as a default setting. No doubt we had more on request, but after a request only.

Lovely hotel, but too many non guests

Was supposed to get a complimentary upgrade due to my membership level, didn’t get one. Enquired and was told I had one already but I had the room I booked online, no upgrade added.

Apart from that, nice hotel but they allow non hotel guests to que up for lunch an hour before it starts and so the entire entrance area is packed and kind of ruins the tranquility and vibe the hotel has. Super busy and the block the walkways.

Truly superior in every way

Truly superior in every way, definitely surpassing the two 5-star hotels in Tokyo that we stayed in before and after our journey to Shanghai.
The room was spacious and well-furnished, with a big comfortable bed and great noise insulation. Even though we ended up with a room by the elevator, noise was never a problem. The bathroom was a spacious and beautiful marble chamber. Impressively, the room was wonderful down to even small but useful details, like the charging station built into the nightstand drawer, and the nail polish dryer at the makeup station in the walk-in closet.
The common areas are opulent Art-deco styled, with a nice selection of bars and restaurants, plus a luxury shopping mall. The Michelin-starred restaurant lived up to expectations, and the other restaurants provided completely satisfying food as well. The view from the rooftop bar is quite impressive, probably the best view on the Bund side of the river, which means the Shanghai (Lujiazui, really) skyline is front and center.
The location is excellent, being a convenient walking distance to the rest of the Bund and Nanjing road. Though not too near metro stations, getting around by taxi is easy and still inexpensive in Shanghai, and the hotel's bell captains were able to have taxis show up within minutes of asking.
The staff to guest ratio was as good as could be expected. The service was courteous and efficient, highlighted by thoroughly helpful concierges and bell clerks.

Perfection into every last detail

As always at The Peninsula, perfection into every detail - from glasses cleaners being put next to the eyeglasses on the table, to the cutlery and décor, to the staff service, to the rooms themselves; how all the small lights go out with the master switch for a calm night, the curtains. Magnificent view. Perfect location on the Bund. A fantastic bar.

What more could you ask for...
Maybe: how about upgrading your amenities a bit? You're falling behind on those...

One of my favorite hotel ANYWHERE!

We spent 4 nights at the The Peninsula Shanghai in a Deluxe River View Suite. This is only my second time to stay at The Peninsula Shanghai, but I have to say it is one of my favorite hotels anywhere! Our suite was large, over 1000sqft, with great views over the Bund, river and to the skyscrapers of Pudong. But more importantly, the level of detail in the design, execution, maintenance, comfort and service are the best I've ever experienced. I also find that staying along the Bund is a big plus as a tourist, compared to staying across the river in Pudong. Yes, there are many nice hotels in Pudong, but overall, the Bund area seems much more walkable and interesting. The indoor swimming pool was clean, beautiful and never crowded during our stay. Wifi was very good, although remember that you usually can't access Google/gmail from within China.

As for the neighborhood and getting around the city: there are tons of museums, parks, shops, restaurants, coffee shops and even large malls all within easy walking distance of the hotel. And we also found using Didi (the Chinese equivalent of Uber) very easy and convenient to use. Just download the Didi app and select English as the language. It now accepts credit cards from several countries, including the US, UK, France and others. I mention Didi because we found them to be MUCH cleaner than the taxis. And their 'Premier' car class was always very clean, nice and inexpensive compared to US and UK taxi/Uber options.

This hotel is just simply fabulous.
1. The design is great in 'art deco' style.
2. Staff were so friendly and helpful. It really counted that we were residents and got great tables via Concierge two nights running at the 12th floor terrace bar. This hasn't always been the case on our travels
3. Food was fabulous. Breakfast had great choices with really top quality food. The blueberry pancakes were just to die for along with the Eggs Benedict
4. The view of the Shanghai terrace bar was just incredible. This has to be the world's best skyline at night. We went to New York last year and this just knocks spots off it.....
5. Room was lovely. Very spacious and had a great system for controlling everything from air con to radio to lighting system etc. The toiletries are great (Oscar de la Renta). Like most guests i'm sure a few found their way back to England and when we use them it just transports us back to Shanghai!
6. Location is great. It's just 5 minutes walk, if that from the Bund, which is the main thoroughfare on the river that most tourists go to.

Everything about this place just oozes absolute quality. It's grand but does not have the stuffiness and formality of some of the grand London hotels.I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anybody staying in Shanghai. I read somewhere that it has been voted best Asian city hotel two years running and this doesn't surprise me at all.

Elegant, Sophisticated Modern Comforts

This was the best hotel we experienced in our almost month long foray in Asia. It was roomy, clean, bright and super luxurious. The linens and bed were SO comfortable. The staff was friendly, professional and extremely accommodating. The in room coffee and tea service was nice, and the suite (which our accompanying friends upgraded to) even had a nespresso machine! When we booked, we debated on whether or not we would be able to justify such a room, being that we were going to be out touring Shanghai so much of the time. But it was well worth it. The view of the night skyline, the quiet beautiful surroundings, the walk-in closet with dressing room- they all made it WELL WORTH THE PRICE! When we got to Hong Kong, I found myself wishing I had booked at the Peninsula there as well! I recommend this hotel completely without hesitation!

From the moment you arrive you will be pampered like you're a King. Every request is honoured in seconds. You are not given a chance to complain about any thing, they solve it before you even think about it. The room design & amenities are out of this world..magical. The swimming pool & spa are regal. Certainly the best thing in Shanghai is the Peninsula hotel. You will feel very sad leaving this wonderful stay, they make sure that every moment of your stay is really enjoyable.

Rooms are excellent. I've not returned to my hotel room and seen a more thoughtful layout of belongings anywhere else!

What could be improved however would be
1) the airport pick up service is a a complete rip-off which is one thing, but upon arrival we ended up having to walk quite a bit, following the driver to the car and into the parking lot, etc. I would think at this price the service should be absolutely top notch and curbside
2) Food in the lobby very underwhelming and service level limited. Again, at this price range this needs improvement

Every detail was anticipated- even appointed with both 110 and 220 outlets throughout the room so I didn't have to use my converter. Checked in to the Peninsula around 8pm after a long day of travel from a different city in China. I was transiting out the next day so I didn't spend too much time on the property, but nonetheless the time I did spend was amazing. The rooms are beautiful, I had a nice meal and drink on the rooftop bar (which has amazing views of the Shanghai skyline) and grabbed breakfast in the lobby before my ride to the airport. Definately 5-stars plus at The Peninsula Shanghai.

Booked 3 rooms for 5 travellers and also requested airport pick up for 900 RMB. Everything ran smoothly and when we arrived at the hotel, they upgraded us to a three bedroom 4000 odd sq ft apartment in the residence becasue they couldn't accommodate all 3 of our rooms on 1 floor. Needless to say, that flat was incredible! Service from the doormen ip was first class and everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. I will definitely be back!

This hotel has all the amenities you could wish for.

The staff are friendly and helpful.

The location, right on the Bund, with great views of the river (if you are lucky enough to get a river view room) is also outstanding.

The only negative I have is that there is not really a QUIET lobby for talking to others - the main lobby area is actually the restaurant, and it has music playing most of the day. There is limited seating near the reception desk, which is busy. .

The slickest, more sophisticated hotel I have ever been in with attentive and charming service. The bedroom included a sitting area with a giant TV hidden tastefully behind a screen controlled with a fingertip control. You will not want to leave the bathroom: spa lighting a and mood music as well as another TV.

James Bond would stay here!

The hotel is located smack in one of the best areas of Shanghai. Walking distance to shopping and fine dining yet not too far from cultural sites like the Shanghai Museum or Jade Buddha Temple. Asian hotels are known for their service and the Peninsula didn't disappoint!

such a great hotel and makes us want to go again, we love it! we go with 4, with 2 kids, the reception ask what kind of toys/things the kids like and we expect they'll bring us some surprise. kids love surprise! however, 3 nights gone, none. no idea why they gave us 2 pre-printed form to fill with nothing follow up. other than that, we are happy to the hotel service. be prepare to taxi in taxi out :)

Fantastic location, service, room. We were upgraded for free to a suite when we arrived. Any room in this hotel is fantastic, but the suite was really special. The staff at the Peninsula knows how to make you feel at home and like a king at the same time. Its location close to the Bund, but away from the traffic is also one of the best in town. The Sir Ellis bar with fantastic views of Pudong is a must visit for an aperitif before you head off for dinner in town.

If you want the 5 Star Expierence there is no other place to look than the Peninsula. The hotel is class all the way with no detail overlooked, however expect to pay the price for it as it is not cheap.The only downfall is the location as it is not near the excitement. I am very used to staying near Nanjing Rd which near all.

Wonderful hotel: amazing decor etc... a true Peninsula. Re: Location, I am not a fan of the Bund in general, and I happened to be caught in a rainy Friday there, when the hotel also had a wedding banquet going on. So the result was that the staff was unable to find me a car or taxi to leave the note for dinner, and had to cancel my plan. I know that they had a tough task, but still.. surprising.

We stayed at this hotel only for 3 days, at the door you are welcomed by many belman and doors are opened by females in white uniforms, very classy. The person who checks you in brings you to the room, we had to call for our bags as they may had forgotten to bring them up. The hotel has a number of luxury shops and a hairdressor my wife used, price was oke. The hotel is very clean and very thing looks news. The curtains open automatically and best of all you have a nepresso cofffee machine. We had a separate closet for our clothes and the bathroom had a TV in front of the bathtube.
