During our four-night stay at the Althoff Palace Hotel, booked via the U.S. website, we were impressed by the facilities but deeply disappointed by the service standards, which fell well below expectations for a five-star property.

From arrival, friendliness and professionalism were lacking compared to luxury hotels we regularly stay at, such as the Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and Peninsula. We initially booked a suite but downgraded due to dissatisfaction with the room. A significant issue arose regarding smoking: we proactively asked staff for permission to smoke in the back garden and never smoked in the room. Despite this, management later accused us—rudely—of smoking indoors, creating an embarrassing and uncomfortable situation that was later disproven.

Housekeeping and service were inconsistent. Despite requests, rooms were not cleaned when indicated, housekeeping arrived at 8:00 a.m. despite our jet lag, and room service trays were left in the room for an entire day. Upon moving rooms, we found the toilet improperly cleaned with visible residue, the TV not functioning, and overall poor attention to detail.

While the spa staff, valet, and younger apprentices were professional and courteous, interactions with senior management were unfriendly and dismissive. The hotel has strong potential, but service quality, management conduct, and treatment of international guests—particularly Americans—require significant improvement.

We only stayed one night here to relax in the Spa after an eventful weekend. The service is really good and the hotel is quiet for its size. The spa area was very nice. Unfortunately, Vendôme was not bookable but their Italian restaurant was lovely. The breakfast was good, a lot of variety but we had better in other 5 star hotels. All in all we had a great time and would come again for a quiet getaway.

Luxury grand property, the grounds were superb. The area around the hotel had lovely restaurants which we tried. The bus stop and train station is literally 5 mins walk away. Our room was perfect, big plus was the penhaligon bath set provided.
The spa area with swimming pool was used by us everyday after our extensions!
All in all a very relaxing, much needed stay.

This place is just amazing. The reality is even better than the pictures, it has to be seen to be believed. I've never stayed anywhere like this before.

Great staff, great food, the local area has some nice restaurants, not too hard to get to Cologne (it's at the end of tram line 1).

The wifi was a bit inconsistent but that's fairly common.

This was hands down the best experience with a hotel my partner and I have ever had. Our flights got changed and our luggage was lost (coming from the USA), but the staff were friendly and helpful throughout the entire mess.

Not only were the staff pleasant, the hotel itself is beautiful. My partner and I were enthralled to experience such a gorgeous building during our first out of country travel.

If given the chance, we would happily stay here again. Worth every penny.

This property is an hold castle situated in the middle of Bensberg that is suburb of Cologne. The staff is very welcoming. I arrived super early at noon while the check-in time was 3:00pm the staff let me check in early with no hesitation. I stayed there for 5 nights and did not feel like leaving ;) The rooms/suites are very spacious with plenty of seating/relaxing area. They do provide free beverage and it will be replenished during each room service. The Italian restaurant is amazing with lots of choices.
Ideally located at the downtown with plenty of restaurants and grocery stores.

Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful, answered every questioned I have about the area . They upgraded my room plus they have a bottle of wine 🍷 for my Expedia VIP rewards .
They have free 2 bottles each of cola, water and orange juice plus a big bottle of water no extra charge …when checked out they asked if you need any assistance and asked if you need something to drink …
Overall stay is pleasant and this hotel is 💯 stars ⭐️

Cold-hearted German hotel

I visited the hotel with my handicapped sister and my 90-year old parents who both need assistive devices for walking. We went there for the hotel spa and their Michelin-star rated restaurant. The access to the spa only has stairs (!), and the restaurant elevator wasn't working, so that they had to drive us to the lobby for my incontinent mother to use the bathroom during the meal. Carpeted floors, cobblestone walkway, long distances etc. - a nightmare for people who can't walk. We had to leave after one night, following a long and difficult international trip to get there.

The hotel reimbursed us for just 10% of both rooms and two nights - even for the one we didn't stay.

Just in case you are wondering, the hotel is advertised as highly accessible! Hotels.com hasn't offered much either to make up for the lost time, cost and frustrations.

We had a lovely few nights here. The hotel was beautiful and the room was fantastic. However I was surprised to find that we had to pay to park in the hotel car park- I would expect that to be free for guests. It cost us over €80 just to park! Plus it was difficult to get food at the hotel- all the restaurants and Dali bar were fully booked and we couldn’t get a quick reasonably priced lunch either. Breakfast was also very pricey so we ate out every day. The spa was very pleasant and we found all the staff very friendly and helpful. Overall a lovely stay, just a shame about car park and restaurants.

A Landmark with Some Drawbacks

This is an older hotel that is very large. The rooms are spacious and clean but the pillows and air conditioning leave much to be desired. We each had 2 bed pillows on our beds but they flattened down to absolutely nothing! Impossible to read without using several of the decorative pillows behind you and if you need any type of support from a pillow when you sleep these did nothing. The AC in the room did nothing for 3 nights no matter how we adjusted the thermostat in the room. The room was so warm that sleeping was difficult. We resorted to opening the window (that had no screen) and endured the noises from the street and the early morning light to be able to sleep comfortably. The staff was very helpful at all times when we had questions at the front desk. If you are an older person with any sort of balance or mobility issues, using the tub/shower could prove challenging as it is high and getting in and out with wet feet can pose the potential for injury.

An elegantly furnished castle hotel with all modern amenities and a well trained and helpful staff.
The praesidential suite we used was elegant, spacious and well equipped, although the ultra modern shower enclosure was a little impractical.
The reception and the staff over all are friendly, helpful and utmost efficient and professional.
The 3 Michelin Star Vendome Restaurant allows for fine dining.
The location is somewhat remote but only a fifteen minute ride from Cologne.
Our stay was a pleasure and we certainly will visit again.

Very nice hotel bit pricey but then 5 star lovely grounds building beautiful but was not told about some of the facilities like afternoon tea just handed a card with bar code on about hotel.
The room was disappointing due to being small and cramped the air con didn’t work so had to open the window which was told not to do bearing in mind it was 37oc outside and the last thing was the tv out of 200 channels there was 2 in English one Dubai channel and the other movie that stopped working completely or some reason after reporting they couldn’t fix so offered us another room to watch tv in ( not good enough)

Beautiful castle, well maintained. One could expect a bit more of action from the receptionists who, while explaining how to get to the room, should have come along with us to avoid we get lost, and why not maybe offer to carry the luggage to the rooms. well basic expectations for a luxury service. Area is quite loud so you won't sleep with open windows. The restaurant in the hotel is supposed to be one of the best of Germany. It was not up to expectations neither. It was generally not very crowed.

Be prepared with dress clothes if you book this hotel! My boyfriend and I felt out of place wearing casual clothes. The hotel staff were very friendly and speak very good English. The hotel is luxurious and not over priced. Not too far from the bus station or the u-bahn but bear in mind that it is 30-40 minutes from downtown Köln.

Fine hotel let down by expensive extras

The hotel is marketed under the Leading Hotels of the World banner, and we booked a one-night stay here mainly for the spa facilities, and they did not disappoint - a reasonably sized pool with natural light, both sauna and steam rooms, and treatments if you wanted them.

Welcome was friendly, and our room, whilst the most basic on offer, was double aspect, so the room felt bright and airy. Bed was a normal double bed, where I might have expected a queen, but at least it was a proper double, not two single beds pushed together, which is quite common in these parts.

Where the hotel fails is all the expensive extras. EUR28 for car parking (not mentioned anywhere I could find on the website), over EUR30 for the buffet breakfast, an expensive set menu in the Italian restaurant on site. We were savvy enough to avoid these by visiting the nearby town, which is literally a few hundred metres from the entrance, but with more sensible pricing, the hotel might have got more of our business.

Luxury hotel excellent staff prices to match.

The staff on our arrival set the tone for our visit. They were friendly and efficient and willing to tolerate our desire to speak very bad German even though they spoke English perfectly well! Our room, whilst of the lowest category available, was lovely. The bed was very comfortable with luxurious bed linen, the bathroom very well appointed and there were some really nice touches like fruit and refreshments. Because we had arrived later than planned we ate in one of the hotel’s restaurants. If you stay here remember it is a luxury hotel with prices to match. The food was not to our taste but the setting was very pleasant and the staff (following the theme!) attentive and friendly. On subsequent evenings we explored the town surrounding the hotel to find typical local restaurants. There were a couple of minor niggles such as there being no towels for use in the sauna one evening and the pool area not being tidied of discarded towels and forgotten replenishment of coffee pods in the room but these were minor points. Also, note that parking is charged at €22 per day. The issue which detracts slightly from the overall rating was that on one evening of our stay the bar was playing host to a disco. This is the only bar, is quite small and meant that there was nowhere to relax with a glass of wine at the end of the day - the only option offered was to sit in the restaurant which was not what I would have expected of such a top grade hotel.

Our stay was only for one night. Wish we had more time. We walked the beautiful ground in the afternoon, this was just enough relaxation before we continue on with our journey the next day. Had a wonderful dinner at the Trattoria Enoteca. Wanted to try Vendome but was closed for the summer. our adult kids can not compliment enough about the fine appointments in the room...my wife loved the toiletries???

Fancy hotel, less than fancy experience

Everything was great, minus the night we arrived.

Two men working the desk were a little condescending: tried to upsell us on a room we reserved on Expedia, making it sound like an upgrade but then telling us it would be 100 euro a night; wouldn't offer the three star restaurant as a dining option even though we'd seriously considered it for the final night of our honeymoon; didn't describe a single amenity of the hotel or let us know when things were open (pool, spa, services, etc).

Our bellman Michael (who was outstandingly caring and thorough) took the bags to the room, and as we walked away we heard them laughing behind us.

Everyone else the whole time was WONDERFUL. Everyone else--front desk staff, wait staff, room staff included. The facilities and room service were really nice. But when your time away starts how ours did it doesn't set a great tone, and really was a shame.

The room was actually two rooms, a sitting room with a small window and a bedroom with another small window. It would have been nicer if the windows were larger but it's not the design of the schloss.

The best place to say in the area, by far

This is top notch hotel sitting on a hill overlooking Cologne, with some amazing food and wine on site. It fine for business, excellent for couples, and I even saw a family with kids there.

Great vacation spot and business too.

Great place to stay at more for vacation, but if you are in town for business will not be disappointed too. Nice layout, clean large rooms and plenty to do around the premises. Excellent stuff and wonderful town near Cologne.
