Poas Volcano Lodge is a stunning and unique mountain lodge nestled into rolling pastures, with breathtaking views of Poas Volcano and the northern Caribbean Plains. The eleven en-suite bedrooms, some with balconies to enjoy the majestic views and others with their own private garden backing onto the cloud forest, are divided between the main Lodge and the outside Garden Rooms.

The Lodge is located on a farm, on the edge of Poas Volcano National Park, with easy access to the delightful local villages and attractions. It is only 45 minutes away from San José (Juan Santamaria) Airport making Poas Volcano Lodge an ideal choice of stay for those just arriving or about to depart Costa Rica.

At Poas Volcano Lodge our ambition is to offer you the most authentic experience of a mountain Lodge in the Costa Rican cloud forest.


When you stay at Poas Volcano Lodge in Vara Blanca, you'll be within a short 4-minute drive from Corso Lechería. This hotel is 6.8 mi (10.9 km) from Poás Volcano National Park and 4.8 mi (7.7 km) from Colinas del Poas.

The location was nice. However, our Expedia reservation stated that the check in time was 2:00 pm. We were taken to the stool, which was not ready. It was a rainy and cold day, and we waited in a hotel library. It took 1 hour and 40 minutes to get our room ready. We asked for a swarm drink, perhaps, as a courtesy for the inconvenience and were given hot chocolate. There was no apology, the receptionist left and on top of that, they charged us for our “courtesy “ drink!
It was lack of concern and lack of customer service that was very disappointing.

My reservation details (name, phone number, dates of stay, amount due, etc.) were leaked before my stay and were used by scammers to send genuine-looking booking and payment messages using accurate information related to this hotel. The hotel acknowledged this serious security incident, yet I have received no further response and no attempt at resolution. This lack of action is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about the hotel’s data protection practices. I would advise future guests to be cautious and consider whether this is the right accommodation for them.

The Poas Volcano Lodge is a magnificent piece of architecture. The rooms are huge, the beds and other furnishings are all top quality, and the woodwork is very impressive. The common areas are grand and inviting, the grounds are verdant with a few impressive sculptures. The off-season rates are very reasonable. We loved it!

The one area that has room for improvement is the restaurant. Although the staff was very friendly, the meals were average at best. There seemed to be poor communication between the front desk and the restaurant staff regarding pre-ordered breakfast.

Astounding beauty outside, a stylish, cozy feeling inside. We stayed in a mountain view room on the main building, and really enjoyed our short stay. We'll be back to try to trails on property. The room is spacious (much larger than it looked in the pictures), the view amazing, and the grounds are gorgeous. Fantastic property, and lovely service. Highly recommended.

Wow!!! This hotel is more than what we all had expected! It’s clean! I got a garden view room with my 2 boys. It was the cutest room! It was so clean and everything you need is in the room.

We went on a little hike with my 2 boys while we were there. They have umbrella available. They have boots available for me AND my boys. They were at the beautiful green house. I cannot recommend more about this hotel!

I can't recommend this lodge highly enough. The staff are wonderful. Breakfast is great. Rooms are cozy. The reading and game rooms are terrific... wonderful fires at night. Everything is very, very clean.

If you have the chance to stay in the Poas region this is an amazing hotel to spend a couple of nights at. A comforting blend of Welsh country farmhouse and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture this is a place of rest and relaxation nestled into its surroundings. Curl up with your favourite book in the glass walled library with a tiny woodburner giving a cosy warm glow, add a glass of red wine and you will feel like you are welcomed into an English country house or head down to the pool table and games room after dinner. Friendly welcoming staff, lovely dinners (very reasonable pricing) means that everything is provided on site. We were only there for 2 nights and didn;t get to try the walking trails. The only improvement we could suggest would be a fridge in the rooms.

Staff was great. Everything about the property was great. Only issue is that the rooms had issues with fire ants. We had moved rooms because our first room had them all over the floor coming up through the wood planks. They had us Move to a different room that seem to not have them but when we woke up in the morning, they were everywhere. We were originally booked for one night, but decided to leave for the second night since my partner is severely allergic to fire ants. Other than the issue with the fire ants it was a really gorgeous property with wonderful views!

The property was beautiful! So quiet during our stay. Was able to hear some noise from other people staying in the room next to us but not horrible at all! Paola was so pleasant and sweet! Javier was Also top notch as well! We enjoyed our stay so much! Breath taking views! Homemade breakfast and dinner! Not much for children to do around the property. Poas Volcano Lodge is a place that leaves you with lasting memories! From the incredible surroundings to the stunning interior that provides a “I wish this were my home” feel. We really enjoyed relaxing and reading our books in one of the several sitting areas. The wood burning stove added an extra warmth to the experience. The hiking trails right at the property were enjoyable. Having to navigate around the cows just added to the experience. We also enjoyed both the breakfast and dinner we had here. You could tell that they use fresh and locally sourced ingredients for the meals.

We got room 6 which has the Wood burning fireplace and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Breakfast was good at the lodge but would not recommend lunch or dinner. There are plenty of local authentic restaurants at short walking distance that would be better choice. The area around the lodge is very peaceful scenic and serene. We enjoyed our stay

Fantastic location with stunning views. The public areas are lovely, beautifully designed and immaculately clean. The restaurant was surprisingly upmarket, considering it's location half way up a mountain, and the food was tasty and well prepared. The garden rooms were understandably basic, but again well equipped and perfectly clean, although probably overdue an update to the bathrooms. The only real spoiler was the apparent lack of any soundproofing between the garden rooms, which allowed us to hear almost everything that was said and done in the rooms nextdoor. Notwithstanding this, it was a lovely spot to stay for a night and as a launchpad from which to visit both La Paz Waterfall Gardens and the Poas Volcano.

We stayed in the Jacamar room which was very homely with an additional sitting area and fireplace and small enclosed garden which was constantly visited by hummingbirds. Although the property has its own restaurant it is in close proximity to other eateries. It is also in a good lication for visiting the volcano and La Paz Waterfall and Gardens.

So let me start by saying I loved the property. It was absolutely beautiful and stunning to wake up every morning to such a beautiful place and view.

The staff is general were great.

Few things that basically didn’t allow me to give it an excellent rating.

1) really far from anywhere. Had I known this I would have rented a car earlier and would have not stayed as long in one spot.

2) We were bumped off two days earlier due to a large group coming. Which was communicated to us prior to our trip. We knew this issue and didn’t have a problem with it. However the night before our check out they alleged we knew we were going to move rooms. I told management we were never told this. She said the group wanted the cabins we were staying. We were NOT happy with this, but when they showed us the other rooms we accommodated them and moved to the other rooms.

Well the group arrived and they hung out in the main house which we were staying. They began to drink and became louder and louder by the hour. We could NOT sleep and had to ask the front desk many times to get them the quiet down. It was after 1:30 AM that the group finally left for bed.

But had I stated to management on my check out that we should have never moved. They should have made them stay in those rooms since they would have all be together and could have been as loud as they wanted to. We moved to accommodate management and that group.

Green light in room annoying.

We only stayed one night. Check-in was simple and easy, The staff were all very friendly. The property is gorgeous and unique. Weather was really rainy and wet, so we didn't get to explore too much around the outside of the property. Our room was exactly as described and quiet, however, the walls are somewhat thin and you can hear other guests but not in a horrible way. It's more like a comfortable home rather than a hotel. The dining room was lovely, dinner was nice and the included breakfast was delicious. Delicious! It's a really neat area and we left the next morning to go straight to the volcano so everything was convenient and scenic.

We had an absolutely amazing time at Poas Volcano Lodge. We went in the off season and there was only a few other guests on the property so we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.

The trails around the property are expansive and lots of fun to explore for a fun afternoon walk/hike.

The food at the restaurant was nice and the service was good.

Having a glass of scotch and some Costa Rican dark chocolate with a good book in front of the wood burning stove and listening to the rain patter on the tin roof before dinners was a treat as well.

Location was convenient to some great local places to see and visit. Staff was so helpful to help us book our tickets to the Poas Volcano National Park.

I'd go back for sure!

Nice trials and nature around the property. View of the Poas Volacano was a plus. Suggestions: they should have whisky options, soda water in reusable glass bottles would be great, and, perhaps not too related to the hotel, but the water management at the dairy farm could be improved.
