This was a beautiful family run business with amazing views. Never have I felt closer to nature or the people of Costa Rica. The host was amazing, super helpful and kind, she made us homemade traditional Costa Rican breakfast every morning. She made herself available at all hours, even when we had to checkout at 2am for our flight home. Parking onsite, and 7 minute drive from down town Alajuela. The view from each room and amenity is breathtaking, the pool is clean and a pleasant escape from the midday heat. The property is a tropical paradise with mesmerizing foliage and wildlife, you can pick ripe bananas in the garden and share them with their pet bunnies (Mango & Waffles) who roam the property daily. I like sit by the overlook in the parking lot with the humming birds and butterflies. This would be a great vantage point for bird watching so pack your binoculars! There’s a handful of very good local restaurants within walking distance, our favorites including El Gordo’s (furthest distance, $$$) & Zompopa Pizza (mid distance, $). This was my favorite part of Costa Rica and I would love to stay here again.

What a truly magical place! The view alone is worth the stay, as Loma Tranquila fully lives up to it's name. To add to an already amazing experience, the host is absolutely wonderful- cooking up a delicious breakfast each morning, and happily attending to whatever you may need, with great recommendations and even some money-saving connections for tours! It's her personal touches that put Loma Tranquila above and beyond. Would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a peaceful and rejuvenating vacation in Costa Rica with an authentic local vibe.

I arrived at night and was only there until early the next morning . The gate has a call button but it’s just open and you have to slide it to get in and walk down a big hill. The window was broken in my room and the staff who showed me to my room disappeared after handing the key off and asking when I was leaving . The pool was empty. The shower was pleasant and hot. The cable did not have a clear channel. The morning view from the cliff was AMAZING!

Dueña Rocio is muy amable. She works very hard to maintain this property herself and is incredibly polite to everyone including her two daugthers. You will have an amazing view of the city, bunnies are walking around the property, available pool area, and fresh breakfast. It was my first time visiting Costa Rica with my mother and we enjoyed our stay. Anyone staying at this hotel can expect a very peaceful environment. Please treat the property with care and respect—Doña Rocío truly deserves it. We would definitely come back & hope to see Doña Rocio again!

I had an amazing stay at this place. The owner was very helpful and friendly. But let me tell you what's amazing about this place, is cottage looking. The view is stunning. The owner is always available at anytime. The pool wasn't available during my stay , because they were painting it, so is understandable. I rented a car which is a must, but this place is very nice. I recommend 100%. Will be there soon!

The room we paid for was not the room we received. When I questioned this with the staff, they said there is nothing they can about it and said all the other rooms were booked. The room I paid was supposed to have a King size bed, fridge, and fan. The one I received had a double bed and no fan or fridge. The pool was not in service and it was empty. Parking was very stressful as there is a steep slope and minimal space to maneuver. The only good thing about the stay was the view and breakfast was delicious. This still doesn't make up for us being given the wrong room.

The owner is very helpful with what you need for information for your trip and to accommodate whatever needs you may have. I spent almost two weeks here. The view is great, the climate is great. Uber takes you wherever you need to go at a very reasonable rate if you are without a vehicle.

The hostess was extremely helpful to me. This was my 1st time in Costa Rica & I felt right at home. Of course I would have preferred the pool to be up & running but the view, being surrounded by nature, fresh bananas off the tree, breakfast every morning, privacy while on the property, gated entry made me feel safe & I was fortunate enough to have a personal driver for 3days to take me all over, from the mountains to the ocean made my trip absolutely priceless! Definitely worth the money!

L'acceuil était génial.J'suis venu ici en sortant de l'aeroport et malgré le fait qu'il était dépassé minuit, la chouette proprio vient m'ouvrir la gate qui naturellement donne un sentiment de sécurité total lorsque à l'intérieur. This place is perfect for a seasoned solo traveler. It’s very safe and the inkeeper is absolutely wonderful. I stayed here alone and ventured out to see other areas and left my belongings here and returned four days later. It’s close to the central Market and a quick cheap uber ride. I walked to the local restaurant with the best views of San Jose..

Is it pampering? No. It’s clean and simple. Breakfast cooked by the inkeeper makes it feel like home. I appreciated this property so much because it was quiet. I planned my activities in other places but it was nice to come back here and enjoy the hospitality of a local owner. I would stay here again.❤️

We had the most wonderful time. The owner was an absolute delight — friendly, helpful, and made us feel like family from the moment we arrived . That personal touch is what sets this place apart from anywhere else we’ve stayed.
The rooms were immaculate — fresh, tidy, and well-appointed. It’s clear that a lot of care and pride goes into maintaining this property. And the views were simply stunning. We found ourselves just stopping and taking it all in at every opportunity.
To top it all off, breakfast was included and absolutely delicious — homemade and the perfect way to start each morning. You could taste the love and effort that went into every dish. It’s the kind of breakfast that keeps you talking about it long after you’ve checked out!

Our experience at Loma Tranquila. Our initial chat with the property owner let us know that their preferred method of communication is using WhatsApp. We arrived at Loma Tranquila on Friday evening around 5 PM the check-in location. The check-in location or registration is on the bottom level of the hotel to reach it. You drive down the slope driveway until you see a pool on your left. There is parking available on site and it is secured at the property is closed off each night by a large metal gate. The economy rooms have a full-size bed a shower and toilet towels, toilet paper and hand soap are provided by the staff. I would recommend bringing your own toiletries a washcloth if you use one in the shower or a loofah. The economy room does not have a microwave or a mini fridge. There is a television. Contrary to what is listed on the website there is no airport shuttle service so you would need to Uber or rent a car to reach this location. Our Uber cost approximately $16usd from SJO To this location. The days are rather warm, however each room is equipped with fans and most of the rooms just leave the windows open to allow the fresh mountain breeze in. This does mean you may see a few flying insects and ants in the rooms but they did not affect our stay. There are no screens on the windows. For us it got a little chilly at night, and our host was gracious enough to accommodate us with an extra blanket. In the morning, breakfast included.

THERE IS NO SHUTTLE AND THE POOL WASN'T WORKING WHEN I ARRIVED. IT SEEMED TO BE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THE PLACE WAS TOTALLY UNDERSTAFFED (THERE WAS NO ONE IN THE OFFICE) SO I HAD TO WAIT TWO HOURS FOR THE OWNER TO ARRIVE FOR CHECK-IN. BUT ALL THAT BEING SAID, THE OWNER IS AMAZING AND REALLY GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND DESPITE HER LACK OF ASSISTANCE. I WOULD ACTUALLY STAY HERE AGAIN , ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS RUNNING NORMALLY. Staff was awesome. The young daughter was so sweet and translated for us when needsd. Room was very nice. Wish there was a tap for hot water to wash my hands as there was only cold. Shower only got lukewarm.
Really great view from our nice deck. Included breakfast was delicious and we were able to purchase a nice dinner for $6. Great deal.
Expedia led me to believe yhere was a shuttle from the airport but there isn't.

My daughter and I ended up here because of multiple flight cancellations on our return home due to a snow storm. We stayed here four days. Rosie, the woman who runs the hotel, was beyond friendly and accommodating to our needs. The hotel is outdated and far from luxurious BUT the views and the people running the place made the stay priceless.

There are a few restaurants to eat within walking distance and there is a few stores open till 10pm to purchase goods, snacks, fruits, etc.

The town is up on the mountains of Alejula outside of the capital San Jose.

I highly recommend a stay here, even if it is a few nights- just for the view and small town in a beautiful mountain vibe.

I would love to return here understand different circumstances that are less stressful (other than four canceled flights.)

Loma Tranquila was a solid overnight stay before an early flight. The owner was on-site and incredibly attentive — she was there to open the gate when we arrived and up early the next morning to see us out. She was very kind and welcoming and took the time to show us the room.

The building itself is historic and has a lot of character, sitting at the very top of a mountain. The amenities are aged and it’s not a luxury stay, but the location is unique and the view from the balcony is incredible — you can see all of San José spread out below. It worked well for one night and did exactly what we needed. One thing to note: it was very difficult to find food nearby after 9 p.m., so plan ahead.

I will gladly recommend this property to anyone looking for a stay over near the capitol. Rosia the proprietress couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful.
When my original flight was cancelled she had no hesitation whatsoever in moving the reservation over to my new arrival date. She was also helpful with arranging my visit to LaPaz, which was magnificent.
The restaurant she recommended, ‘Mirror Of The Valley’, within walking distance, was also wonderful.
If I could give her (and her daughters) 10 stars I would gladly do so. Frankly I’m hopeful that the occasion presents itself that I could stay with them again … I would not hesitate for a second.
So my ‘sombrero’ is off to Loma Tranquilla and wish them great success in the years to come!

I really enjoyed my stay at Loma Tranqila! The Hostess, her Daughters and the woman working on the property were all very nice and attentive. This was my 1st time in Costa Rica and I wanted an authentic experience off of the beaten path. I wanted to live amongst costa rican people people away from all the tourist hype. This place gave me that feeling. It is up in the hills and you get a million dollar view of San Jose on the property. I would recommend that anyone staying here have a car. There isn't much to walk to close by. Maybe one restaurant a few blocks away.
The property is more of a bed and breakfast style place. The room was ok but I wasn't in costa rica to stay in the room. I just needed a base point to lay my head and store my things safely without breakingthe bank. This place provided that. The only place I found for less on Expedia was shared space and I didnt want that! I do wish they had a mini fridge and a microwave in the room but I understand. Food brings bugs! The hostess can make food to order until 930pm and they do sell snacks on the property by the pool.
The hostess recommended some activities close by that I could drive to and enjoy. I would 100% stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a unique un-touristy experience.

Place is run down, they advertise a fully equiped kitchen which had a microwave, coffee maker, 2 burner stove but absolutly nothing else... no dishes, cooking ware, ustensils, sponge or soap.... Cabinets were screwed shut. Freezer barely cooled, fridge did not work at all. Windows could not be opened. No AC. Chairs were so unsafe to sit on. Sofa spring system unexisting, needed help to get out of it. Bed was a home made construction. Not sure where they got the name from but it was loud. Our entry door as well as the neigbors were clear glass so that we could look in each others place. We had booked the place for 5 days, we left after one night:(
Owner is fed up of the place, she separate from her husband and try to handle the 23 rooms by herself. She stated unwilling to invest anything more and want to sell it to move to Switzerland!

My room was very clean and nice. My bathroom was huge. The service was exceptional. The family that runs the hotel they are the most helpful friendliest and positive people that I have ran into in a long time my room was across from the pool and of course, it was beautiful, especially at night then you had the breathtaking views of the property when I say breathtaking, that is an understatement of how beautiful the property is. This is an absolute must and let’s not start with the cost. I did not expect what I walked into and I am so happy that’s where I ended up my trip turned out better than I expected. this hotel was perfect and I enjoyed every minute on this property because the views his self are so breathtaking. He just can’t get enough of it, so yes, you will be very happy that you stayed here

This is a great little budget friendly hotel with a spectacular view. My room was large with a balcony overlooking the central valley. I arrived before check in, but my room was ready, so I had
immediate access. The folks running the hotel were kind and courteous and arranged a 6:00 am pick up so I could get to the airport. I was only there for an afternoon and overnight so didn't use the pool but others seemed happy with it. There is a restaurant within a 5 minute walk. I didn't explore the area, but chose the place for a short, peaceful stay with a view, and it delivered. It's about 25 minutes to the airport. Please, if you book, realize it's a family run hotel and not a 5 star resort.

On airplane route so quite noisey, no tea/coffee/ water facilities in room, nil fridge, breakfast minimal with no variety only hot drink option nil water and only 1 hr from 8-9am - started late sometimes as well, pillows had mildew on, top blanket dirty, tidy room but on inspection dirty, the view was amazing! Staff friendly but actually don’t understand English well, tried asking activities in area many times but no help even with translator. I wouldn’t stay here again.

This hotel was worse than terrible. It was dirty, smelly, and completely misrepresented. The photos on Expedia are clearly filtered and do not reflect the actual condition of the property. I have photos that prove how filthy and unsafe this place is, and I will post them if the platform allows it.

The toilets were old, yellow, and visibly dirty. The room door did not even fit the frame properly—the top was open, and the bottom of the door was smaller than the frame, making the room feel extremely unsafe.

I arrived on December 11, 2025, and left the same day—within 30 minutes of checking in—because the conditions were unacceptable and unsafe. We did not stay at the hotel at all.

I requested a refund, but it was refused by the hotel. I sent the photos to Expedia so they could see the true condition of this place, yet I was told that the hotel still refused to issue a refund.

I have traveled the world and have used Expedia for all my trips, but I have never experienced anything this terrible. This is by far the worst hotel I have ever encountered. Expedia should be aware of the quality of this property, as it should not be listed in its current condition.
