Our stay of 4 nights was excellent, room with a private patio amazing place to sit and relax after busy day at beach or at night to enjoy a drink or cigarette.
Breakfast and service was very good too.
Location steps to the port where you can take the ferry to La Madalena , at night market across the hotel and a variety of restautants.Parking free from 8:00PM to
8:00 AM, we didnt use the parking from hotel.

Surely it’s not a 4* hotel:
- The breakfast is very mediocre, and all plates are the size of cup plates, apparently to prevent guests from having ‘more’ food than they expect them to have
- There are no sockets next to bed, only old USB-A ports which nowadays no one is using
- The are no water glasses in the room. So we had to purchase the plastic cups from the supermarket nearby
- TV didn’t work (didn’t turn on)
- No noise cancellation, every time someone is passing by or slams the door or walking in the room upstairs you can hear it loud and clear

The hotel is quite clean however, and location is quite close to restaurants and bars in Palau. However it comes at costs of extra noise in case there is some performance nearby (until 12-1am)

There is also a separate underground parking, which is useful given that public parking next to the hotel is very busy. It costs 19€ per day though, and if you want to keep a car for another few hours after checkout they would charge you a full extra day

The hotel was clean with friendly staff. Just a couple of things I would point out are no kettle in the room and the air con wasnt very powerful. To counteract my friends kettle situation the hotel gave her free hotwater everyday as she bought her own teabags. The free breakfast was good with plenty of variety

Location is excellent but there is a large parking lot between the hotel and the marina so views are not the best. The hotel is very old (it’s in the name) but once you open the doors and windows it freshens up pretty quickly.

Our luggage was lost and the staff went above and beyond to help us with retrieving our luggage. They have a bar next door with snacks but surrounded by restaurants and shops on Main Street

Check-in staff Marco was very nice and friendly. He showed us the room and explained everything. The room was clean and tidy. Their continental breakfast was good. Good location, the hotel is surrounded by many restaurants. For the ferry to La Maddelena, the port is only few mins walk away. There is a night market right outside the hotel every night. Will come back for sure if we need to stay in Palau again!

The room, front desk staff and hotel are very good . But the breakfast can be significantly improved . The coffee was terrible . They have a beautiful coffee machine behind the bar which remains unused while they make guests use an automatic machine from which the coffee comes out tasting terrible . That is unacceptable in Italy . I went outside to get some sun with my coffee and the breakfast staff scolded me when I came back in to return the cup stating that we are not allowed to “remove items “- as though I was going to steal a cheap coffee mug . Ridiculous . The food quality at breakfast was poor . They need to change this . Otherwise , was a nice stay with friendly staff .

Great hotel for visiting La Maddelena, convenient for the shops and restaurants, its not the most modern of hotels, but the location makes up for it.

There is no pool or beach front, nor is there anyway to sunbathe, its a hotel to explore from, just by the port.

This is one of the nicest places in Palau and in a great location. Staff was friendly and the room clean and well maintained. Location offers easy parking and access to the town and port.

That being said, the rooms are generally poorly appointed and I would not consider this a 4-star hotel. The amenities are not up to par.

There was only a sheet on the bed and we had to dig out a comforter and additional pillows from a bag in the closet to bolster the thin ones on the bed.

However, most disappointing was the absence of any type of kettle and tea/coffee station in the room. When I inquired I was told the « standard » rooms don’t come equipped with this though all other rooms do. While the description of the standard room does not include a coffee corner, lots of the general photos show this in the rooms and only a very astute reader would notice this possible discrepancy between room classes. It is also very odd for a hotel to limit this type of amenity in the room.

In addition, the internet was slow and weak. While working in the room, the signal dropped multiple times. It may be ok for casual internet browsing but not much else.

In short, while this may be one of the best options in town, I’m not sure it’s the best value.

The location of the hotel made it very convenient to walk around to different shops and restaurants in the town. The staff were all very pleasant and friendly. We'd come back here in a heartbeat.

We loved our stay here. Beautiful property, elegant, tasteful, nice staff. Generous, lovely rooms, crisp gorgeous sheets and the most comfortable bed and pillows. Bathroom nicely done with soft towels. Lots of hot water, fairly roomy shower. French doors open to the garden and the nice little town. Church bells ringing. Very generous buffet breakfast with courteous, smiling staff. Great late lunch in the town. Took the La Maddalena Archipelago all day boat trip, a 3 minute walk from the hotel. Parking was easy, as well.

Breakfast was basic and the room it was served in was not the best, but the breakfast staff were very nice. The shared balcony was not great for privacy reasons. Hotel is central location to the port and town. Nice breakfast and spacious modern rooms and baths.
AC was a problem. In the room it would take several hours to get comfortable (22-23) however AC was on a timer and would turn off after 90 minutes, so if you left the room or were sleeping would wake up in hot sweat. Breakfast room AC did not work either.

The Location of the property is perfect for catching the Ferry early the next morning to go to the Maddalena islands . The hotel location is ideal for shopping and for the nightlife. Every night an outdoor market sets up in front of the hotel from 8 pm until 1 am . Its nice as you can walk around in front of your own hotel and its nice and lively at night. There is a huge parking lot to park your car in front of the hotel . The white lines parking is free and the blue lines you pay for parking . At night from 8 pm to 8 am the blue lines parking is free for overnight.
Hotel staff is very helpful and polite and lent me an adapter for my blowdryer . Staff was helpful in suggestions for dinner etc. and were super friendly and very nice. Definitely recommend staying here . Location is perfect .

Twin bed room is reserved, however, when we arrived at 10pm, there is a double bed. And there is no house keeping so we have to make the bed ourselves. The hotel is old fashion design but the shower corner is newly built. However they built a very shallow basin with curtains not even make glass sliding doors so water is hardly control to flood everywhere. Besides, as a four star hotel, there is no kettle available in the room is quite unbelievable.

Misleading photos suggesting breakfast is at outdoor roof. Reality was in a room with little light and weak air conditioning, gets warm when a few tables arrive to fill the room. Breakfast selection is limited but staff was helpful and tried get hold of the few 'Engligh Breakfast' tea bags left. The room was spacious, floor needs cleaning. Bed cover and sofer cover were dirty / stained, not of 4* standard. Beddings and towels were clean and fresh looking up to expectation. Good central location, there is a nightly market outside the hotel where the public carpark is. Public parking ends at 8pm when market vendors start arriving. Trading activities go on till around midnight. It could be noisy if you have a room facing the carpark/marina. There is no kettle in the room. Mini bar (and entire room) offers 1 plastic cup.

We stayed in the presidential suite and were welcomed with a bottle of prosecco and some local cookies. The room was great and the jacuzzi was a very nice touch, even if not as big as from the pictures.
Breakfast was an average self service, with both sweet and savoury dishes and a coffee machine. Perhaps one would expect more from a 4* hotel.
It is conveniently located by the town harbour and centre, both reachable within 5min walk.
The staff was always smiling and super efficient.
Definitely a recommendable place to stay.

We stayed in a room/apartment with a hot tub on the balcony overlooking the marina. The room was beautifully decorated and their attention to detail was excellent. The staff were also very helpful. Only slight negatives were the balcony overlooks a children's play area and car park which is very busy and noisy during the day not that you can hear this from in the room anyway and in the evening it is perfect on the balcony. Also the breakfast is ok but make sure you don't get there towards the end of the slot because they do not top stuff up. For example if you get down after 930 you are unlikely to get bacon.

Made to feel welcome right from the off. Family owned hotel. Staff were amazing. The hotel does not do food as such (Just breakfast and snacks). They do have a bar. The family have a restaurant about 50 meters from the hotel. We ate there on 2 occasions, food and service were very good. Special mention to Luca, what a star! The hotel is surrounded by places to eat. Hotel has underground parking (extra). Our room had air conditioning, great shower, comfy bed. All in all an enjoyable stay.

Lovely hotel, great location for all ages & needs

We booked Hotel Vecchia Fonte after reading guests ratings, and then had serious worries that we had got it wrong this time. We worried that Palau was a small town but not a quaint old Sardinian town, by a car park, busy port with ferry boats, but all of our worries were unfounded. Palau is easy to get to from Olbia airport, the hotel very easy to find. The town is a fairly basic small town, but there is some interesting typical Sardinian architecture. Palau is a happy place - there are restaurants, cafes, pizzerias to suit all tastes and budgets - the standard of food excellent. Try a different place most nights, but then find the one that you like best and go back there - the staff will remember you and welcome you as friends. On our second night there was dancing in the square by the hotel and the local people, young and old, all joined in with obviously traditional Sardinian style 'Strictly' dancing. Even the children stayed out with their families until very late. The market is every night, next to the hotel, great for browsing after a delicious meal finished off with a yummy ice cream.The Sardinian people are lovey, warm and welcoming and can't do enough to help you. Most speak a little or a lot of English, but if not,don't worry, hand gestures work just as well!

Only downside to our stay was a very noisy late night/early am bar very close by.Music was unreasonably loud on a couple of nights.We were located at the front but I suspect due to volumn of music that sound could be heard throughout hotel,also given that we were low season I can imagine that frequency of noise would have been more regular in high season.

Paulau is a small fishing port with day and night ferry crossing terminal to the nearby Maddelena Island. An attractive resort, the newly built town has small streets with shops, cafes, piazza's and restaurants. There was a busy market on Friday mornings, outside the hotel. All the facilities were in walking distance from the hotel including the port. The restaurants offered very good food, eg. fish dishes, pasta and pizza, not too pricey. We were nt disappointed with any of the restaurants. Although it was quiet and the end of season, we liked this town and were pleased with the choice we had made to stay here. There are even one of two beaches within walking distance. However, we needed a car to see the local region and beaches. Paulau was a good base to explore.

Friendly hotel, great location

This hotel is set amongst the restaurants and bars in Palau, close to the Marina, giving it a lively and convenient feel. A nightly market made sure that the atmosphere was good.
Throughout the stay the hotel staff were happy to make suggestions on where to go, where to eat etc, and to help with making reservations.
Before booking, I had read reviews warning of noisy bars nearby and how they caused disturbance through the night. This was not my experience - yes there were bars around the hotel, but they did not continue into the early hours and so did not disturb sleep. I would suggest that, if customers want peace and quiet during their stay in Palau, there are many places to stay in the middle of the countryside away from civilisation!

I would definitely recommend this hotel!

Great location for exploring the area.
hotel is by the port and in the heart of the town.
Attentive, helpful and polite staff.
very clean rooms and a nice buffet breakfast.
Highly recommend it!

Excellent location

The hotel’ service, breakfast, location, cleanness is good. The only observation is that it is a bit noisy during festive days; otherwise it is a perfect place. I will go back again.

Nice quaint hotel

Had wonderful experience at the hotel. Staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast every morning was delicious with many choices for breakfast. The beds a little hard for my liking but the room was prefect for me.

Great Location

Great location for exploring the North East of the island. Hotel is right on waterfront with everything within easy reach. Friendly helpful staff. Great breakfast spread. Stayed two extra nights :-)

perfect location of hotel

Great stay! JJ at the front desk was great! He was very nice, informative and took the extra time to make a person feel comfortable. Right at the port and next to plenty of restaurants. Took the ferry to La Maddalana. Were upgraded to a better room with a balcony. Bathroom was nice, big and clean. Big sink countertop, with nice shower. They only have 10 parking spots at the hotel, so call a head and let them know if you have a car. We parked out front at pay parking, but didn't have to because JJ would go out and validate every hour until it was free (which is after 2000). Stay at this hotel and you won't be disappointed.

Lovely hotel, wish we had booked for longer!

We have just returned from a week's holiday in Sardinia and stayed at La Vecchia Fonte Hotel for the middle two nights of our holiday. We had booked one of the hotel's classic rooms but were very kindly upgraded to a suite, which was a lovely treat, especially since it was my birthday. Our rooms were very nice, very tastefully appointed and comfortable, and with a great view out over to the harbour and, in the evenings, the little craft market. Lots of lovely touches such as premium bedding, excellent range of toiletries, robes and slippers made our stay feel really special. The hotel is in an excellent location next to the bustling harbour where the boat trips depart for the Maddalena islands. We took a trip out with an outfit called Nautica Jasmine, which had smaller boats, and we had a fantastic time. It's also within very easy walking distance of plenty of restaurants – our first choice was Pasta & Vino Trattoria, just around the corner from the hotel, which did great seafood pasta which we enjoyed so much we went back again for our second night. Palau itself is a nice little town and a great base for exploring the north east coast of Sardinia. We just wished we had stayed longer. (PS We were aware that some reviewers had commented that the front rooms of the hotel might be noisy, but we didn't find this to be a problem at all – yes we could hear the noise from the market and cafes when we had the balcony windows open, but when we closed them to go to bed, we coul

Great Location, Great Hotel

We stayed at the Vecchia Fonte for 3 nights. It was the perfect hotel for our needs. The staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. The room was clean, spacious and had good wifi. The breakfast was delicious. It is located in Palau which is a good jump off point for exploring the surrounding area including the Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena islands. The downside town of Palau itself is a bit boring and doesn't have a whole lot to offer. Also, the parking is not included and it's almost certainly necessary to rent a car while in Sardinia. But you can park in the parking lot right outside by the waterfront for around 10-15 Euros/day. Other than that it was a great experence and I highly recommend this hotel.

Elegant hotel

The room was large bright and very comfortable.
The lady on reception spoke fluent English and was friendly and helpful.
Parking on the street has a strictly enforced one hour time limit in season, so worth 12 euros a day to use the hotel garage.
Th.e breakfast was first class with ample, fresh meat, cheese, fruits, cereals, pastries etc.
Tip: Take a drink up to the roof terrace on a Friday night and watch the bussle and lights of the street market and harbour in front of you.
Wonderful location near car ferry for the islands and the train station, with a good selection of restaurants within a few yards. There are 2 or 3 beaches within walking distance if you don't have a car

Nice Hotel, but the area and beaches aren't Costa Smeralda

This is a nice hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff and a good breakfast buffet. We stayed in a junior suite which was nice and incredibly clean (the cleaning staff were the friendliest we'd ever met). We used the hotel's car park (charged at €12 a day) but there is no other real option to park, and the parking is underground and secure.

The hotel misses a swimming pool, as we couldn't find the nearby beach (and most beaches within 10km of the resort are very stony rather than the golden sand of Costa Smeralda). The hotel staff spoken some English, but this wasn't reflected in the resort more generally and we struggled at times. Also beware of some of the nearby restaurants, particularly the pizzeria at the end of the row (Chez Nico or something similar). The service was the worst I've ever had, and have never been treated with such contempt by any other restaurateur! We weren’t alone in our experience and everyone seemed to be treated equally badly. Save your money and go to the restaurant a couple doors down, which has a lovely terrace and very friendly staff, who also speak English.
