We has a sand bune view witch was nice. The outside of the place is starting to show needing major repairs. Very friendly staff. Food was litttle on the higher side but was good. Overall a good stay.

There was an older manager I believe who was incredibly rude and unprofessional. Wouldn’t let us use the pool while we waited for our room to be ready. Unfortunately tainted our stay. Other than that we loved the charm of the hotel and the beach.

What an incredible experience!
Built in the 1940s (I believe) on a 17th century fort on a windblown beach in a national park? Yes please! The natural beauty alone is worth staying here. But the use of stone and wood and natural elements was superb.
I saw some reviews complain about the age of the place. Well my room and the whole wing appears quite new. Decor is simple and comfortable and more than spacious enough for Americans. My room (#50) had a huge patio with views of both the dunes and the beach!
Housekeeping works hard here! Keeping the sand out when it blows in the air and folks track it in must be impossible but I walked barefoot in my room with no grit.
The best part was the service. They let me put my luggage in early and after I checked out so I could walk the beach. They even walked me to my room. Very helpful despite language barriers- MINE, my Portugese is non existent. Hands signals and smiles and patience fixed that.
If you need a day or two of quiet after a busy city like Lisbon I highly recommend this local beach off the beaten track

On the Beach, historical and value for money!

I’ve frequented this hotel since I was a kid and while on vacation in Lisbon, I couldn’t think of a better more nostalgic place to stay. Historical and economical set in the most beautiful location on Guincho Beach. Free breakfast and the staff are all beyond fantastic! I will always be back.

What a disappointment. If outdated, smelly, dark, and fogged up windows were our thing this place would be great! Our friends, the ants in the dining room and mosquitoes in the bedroom, say 5 stars, but I am going to have to disagree.
The positives:
- This would be a great location for the Shining remake.
- you can open the dirty windows to see a clear view
- the dirty furniture in the common areas encourages you to keep moving
- the \"breakfast\" is easily skipped to reduce calories
- the staff doesn't waste your time with pleasantries
- the phone in the bathroom doesn't work so you aren't interrupted while attending to your bath
- the dark hallways give you a sense of adventure

So, why two stars instead of 1? The bed was clean and the beach was lovely. Book at your own risk.

Fix the whole place!!!!!!! Air conditioning did not work properly, a constant issue. We left the window open and then realized mosquitos r a problem. Told the front desk and they said oh yes the bugs r a problem. We should have been told that at check to not open the window. Or here's a thought put screens on the windows. My husband was so chewed up by the bugs that we went to the pharmacy for medicine and the pharmacist told us if his bites weren't better in a couple of days he should go to the hospital. All the fault of the hotel.

What I liked is only one thing - location which is perfect, on a beach with a beautiful view!
Everything else was really bad:
1. I could not see any of the 4* this hotel claims to have - it should be rather named a Sufers Hostel, not a hotel.
2. Room was not clean, it wasn't vacuumed and cleaned properly, leaving a lot of dirt and dust
3. Swimming pool was not working, which I wasn't told earlier, it was a big disappointment (it starts from June, which wasn't indicated)
4. Breakfast quality and choice was poor like in a no-star hotel; natural yoghurt was available only on the first day; then not anymore, when I asked about it and kept asking day after day, I was told by the waiter that it's not and will not be available; this is unimaginable in a 4* hotel
5. On one day cleaning staff took my sun cream; I ran after them, first one pretended she doesn't know anything, when I insisted that I needed it and it was in the bathroom, she brought it after a few minutes; I will leave it without any further comment, had to lock everything up during following days for fear more things disappear.
6. Wifi Internet was not available in rooms, only in public spaces, which is very disappointing in a 4* hotel these days
7. TV in my room was micro size, maybe 20-22\", I haven't seen those in years... it may not be the most needed thing for me, but still, disappointing
8. Last and positivie - reception staff was rather friendly and helpful during check-in and check-out

I do hope you consider it.

Location was good not too far from Cascais town with some great walks. The room was big, had a fanatstic shower and a fabulous view of Guincho beach. A majority of the hotel is dated but gave it character. The reception ladies were very helpful, polite and informative. Sadly the pool and spa were closed until June (which I did not see on the website/whilst booking) We found the restaurant staff quite rude, abrupt, overall unprofessional apart from the waiter from Nepal (didnt get his name) he was very good at his job.

The location and sea view are stunning, but I can't recommend this place because it doesn’t deliver on what is advertised in the listing and what we paid for. The first room we were given did not have soundproof windows, heating or AC, Wi-Fi or internet, hairdryer or safe. After a noisy and cold first night, we complained and were given a second room which was a bit better but still with no internet. The windows in the new room were soundproof but the fan in the bathroom was very noisy and impossible to turn off even during the night, which meant that since the bathroom door latch was faulty, it was difficult to fall asleep with the noise. We also found the cleaning/housekeeping lacking: there was no toilet paper in the bathroom when we arrived back at the end of one of the days, the toiletries were just a couple of shampoo sachets (no shower gel, just a small square of hand soap), dirty pillowcases weren’t changed, shower drain was clogged and caused flooding...
Will not stay again. Definitely not a 4 star experience.

Great potential but lacking warmth and welcome

Unfortunately we had a disappointing stay in this hotel- which has such great potential. On arrival it was complete chaos with no where to park- after going to reception we were shown the locked garage but there was no offer to help with baggage....the staff member just stood there. Check in was very quick with no warmth or welcome. Our room- had a lovely view but was very basic. It was in the wing that had been finished/ still under construction. There were wires hanging out of the wall and the room looked nothing like the pictures online with colour and art work and extra touches. This was a completely bare room. The shower had left over hair and sand from previous guests (but was cleaned and removed the second day and rectified). Breakfast buffet was very basic...Whenever we walked past reception no one spoke to us- in fact we did not see or were addressed by any staff our whole trip - apart from check out and check in. We felt a little uncomfortable and unwelcome. When asking for beach towels for the three of us- there was only one available?! So we had to share. After two nights we had decided to go in to Lisbon and double book another hotel as we just weren't happy here. Even when we checked out we were not asked if everything was ok and why were were leaving early. Also we were extremely disappointed the pool was green and locked....even though it was warm and the beach very busy. Our daughter was very disappointed. Great potential but lacking warmth and welcome.

We arrived in winter. Lovely experience right beside the ocean. You can hear the ocean waves throughout your stay. Building look solid from outside. Interior decor remained from the past. Will be nice to add a hairdryer in the bathroom. Additional heater for the kids room will be appreciated. Breakfast was fine especially with a view of the ocean!

When it is finished it will be fantastic!

We had a wonderful few days at the Muchaxo hotel but it could have been so much better if the hotel had actually been finished! It was built in 1964 & was used by the cast & crew of the Bond film \"Her Majesty's Secret Service\" & in it's hey day must have been fantastic but areas haven't been updated since! The hotel is in the process of being updated but that wasn't communicated to us before we arrived. We booked a family room for the 4 of us (2 adults & 2 children) but found 2 single beds pushed together, a single bed & a camp bed squeezed into a double room which was intended to only accommodate a couple not a family of 4! The room was so brand new it wasn't finished, no fridge in the cupboard for the mini bar, no extractor fan in the bathroom, no hooks to hang dressing gowns or beach towels on, no storage as the wardrobes hadn't been built yet, bare plaster above the mirror in the bathroom. As it was a double there were only towel rails for 2 towels not a family of 4. We had a sea view over the building site where a surf shop/school & beach bar were being constructed. We did complain but couldn't be moved so we put up with it & received a substantial amount off our room rate (nearly half) & a free meal in the restaurant. We loved the massive swimming pool even though the whole area could do with improving but it has character. The location on Guincho beach is superb & once the work is completed it will be great.

So, the positives: the staff was outstanding and the location on the beach was excellent. With that said, the place needs a massive renovation to get it back to its former glory. They have undertaken serious renovations that were ongoing. Lots of potential if they completely rehab the place. Rooms were beat up but vere very clean. Again, it is the staff that makes this place. We were there for 2 nights and still enjoyed ourselves.

We loved this rustic property with its wooden interior and fireplaces.
Fantastic location overlooking a beautiful surfing beach. We chose this hotel with a room overlooking the beach and were not disappointed. It was a large room with a king bed. The staff were very friendly and helpful in both the reception and restaurant. Unfortunately we could only stay one night, but even in winter it was amazing. I can understand why it is popular in summer.

Disappointing stay 4 star hotel?

The location, on a quite beach is why we booked this hotel. We had stayed close to this hotel / beach before so we thought we knew exactly what we would getting. Unfortunately there's building works out side on the beach side, a new shop and restaurant? The work stared at 07:00. Diggers, concrete pumps etc.
All hotels need refurbishment at some point, but this information was not passed on. We would not have booked this hotel had we known. A few other items to note, the bath room was dirty due to age e.g. Shouter curtains mouldy, (not glass screen) plus shower head holder broken.
Another problem is the card reader door locks do not close properly, the latch stay out so every time someone goes in and out of their room they have slam the door. You will hear this from all the rooms around the balcony any time of day and night.
Lastly the pool was not open when we were staying around 1st May onwards.

Fantastic location and service

Trip to Lisbon was perfect thanks to this hotel. It is in Cascais outside of Lisbon. Hotel was directly on the water and the sound of the ocean every night and morning was amazing. Room was clean, nothing fancy but a great bed with a ocean view. Breakfast was decent (although the coffee machine was not the greatest). Staff was very kind and helpful. But word to the wise, it is a approximate 25km from the airport. I paid a taxi 90€ to the hotel but only paid 45€ on the return. So just be sure to get a quote if you go by taxi.

Okay but could be better

Stayed there one night, the room size was okay but some of the decor was dirty and not maintained. There were a few cob webs in the bathrooms as well as rust on the towel rack and taps. The mirror in the bathroom was also dirty. With a bit of care and love this hotel would drastically approve. On the flip side the bar area was the best part of the hotel. The WiFi in the rooms is terrible keeps disconnecting, it only worked in the bar.

Gorgeous beach location in rustic styled hotel

The hotel is located on a very scenic and sparsely populated stretch of beach. Although I had never stayed there, my wife had several years ago. The only reason she was willing to return there (aside from the gorgeous setting) was the fact that the hotel's website indicated it had been renovated since her stay. However, the reality is that the hotel has only redone about half of the rooms. Our unrennovated bedroom was perfectly fine, what wasn't was the bathroom. There is really nothing positive that I can say about that room (mold/mildew, flimsy shower curtain, old and tired towels). The rest of the hotel is fine, so I as long as you ensure that your room is one that had been renovated I would anticipate that you will have a wonderful stay.

Hotel on best beach around - Great Location

The Hotel is 'old' world (quaint), has steps everywhere so you need to be steady on your feet. Upgrade your room if you like a good view, Fortress wing sea view is the view from the pictures on website. (Superb)
The restaurant is reasonably priced for the area and the food is OK. Don't go to other restaurant nearby unless you want to pay a fortune for a meal. You can use the bar for snacks during the day but the beach side shop is good for quick food and drink.
This can be a windy area, so when windy the beach is quiet apart from the normal surfers (Plus wind and Kite). When not windy the beach is busy and the car park is hilarious.
The pool has tricky steps down to the area and the water is as cold as the sea. Good for sunbathing when windy.
Being a 'surfing' beach the Red flags are out often near the hotel, so unless you have a board you may have to walk to the other end of the beach to swim/jump waves.

A taxi to Cascais town center is <10 Eur and 10 mins, there is plenty of choice in the Town for food shopping etc
Sintra is also not that far by taxi or organised trip.
Overall this is an ideally placed hotel that gives freedom from the towns but still is near enough to travel of an evening or day.
The area is expensive but worth a visit.

Reasonable hotel in an excellent location. Not a luxury place but comfortable and clean. Some fixtures/fittings were broken/damaged and very thin walls/shared door meant that you could hear conversations in neighbouring rooms. Wifi was not usable in the room - we needed to sit outside our room to be able to connect. Some parts of the hotel were quite run down. We stayed in the newer section which was reasonable. If you are expecting a 4 star hotel you will be disappointed.

Brilliant sea views.

This hotel may have in the past received many celebrities but it is now past it's best. The corrosive sea air does immense damage to structures and Muchaxos is no exception.
I am mindful the price was better than other hotels in the area but with hindsight I would have preferred to have paid more and stay at a better hotel.
Parking can be very difficult as the car park is always saturated with surfers who park in typical Portuguese fashion.
Breakfast was very poor with very limited choice.

Hotel is located right on the beach. The ocean view rooms had a spectacular view. However, the hotel is very old and in need of updates. Paint is peeling off the wall and there is mold around the windows. Apparently they have an updated wing to the hotel. The hotel was not completely booked so I don't know why they put guests in the older rooms. Breakfast was toast, jam, coffee, juice and rolls. Restaurants in the area are over-priced, I guess your paying for the view.

Lovely room, beautiful view! And an amazing beach! Shame we were too trusting and paid 90 € for a taxi to the hotel from the airport. Our return fare was €37!

Welcoming for a 1.5 year old!

We wanted a quick little beach resort experience to relax with our 1.5 year old after a long hard week of traveling through Spain. The Muchaxo is RIGHT on the beach with two other beaches a quick walk away.

The Muchaxo had an excellent and inexpensive restaurant, there are cafes on every beach and there are a few other restaurants and hotels with restaurants a quick walk away.

Cascais is a 10 Euro, 5 minute cab ride away and the Muchaxo can call a cab quickly. There is also a bus to town that leaves every 30 minutes or so. The bus stop is a 1 minute walk in front of the hotel.

I also want to commend the hotel. When we arrived, we were jet lagged by one hour. Normally, not an issue, but our little 1.5 year old was pretty hungry and getting crabby. Their restaurant opened up at 7:30pm and I knew my little guy wouldn't make it. They opened up the restaurant early for us and food was severed very quickly. He was happy and I put him to bed right after dinner with a full stomach. I can't thank them enough for that!

The hotel itself looks like it was a fabulous, wonderful resort town in the 50s and probably hasn't been updated since. But everything was clean and in working order. The place is LARGE and has many rooms and hallways to explore. The view is great and the pool was pretty cool, too. (But not heated.)
If you have an appreciation of regal style resorts and don't mind that they're older, this is a great place.

Great location....but please read on

Great location. Staff, bar food, cleanliness & entertainment not so great. On arrival a surly receptionist ordered us to remove all our belongings from the car. My next interaction with her was slightly more amicable when I requested a lock for the room safe, I believe she smiled, however she had returned to type by checking out time and grunted her way through the process, she did not utter the words thank you. First impressions last. We stayed 5 nights and the weather was pretty miserable, not the hotel's fault of course, however the bar food was basic and soup of the day was vegetable every day. Also there was no entertainment to speak of although it transpired there was aTV in a bar that was never open. We were reduced to sitting in the other bar watching the rain through the window. While the waiters were on the whole a personable bunch there was one young fellow who gave the impression he did not want to be there and was very curt almost unpleasant. He did cheer up one night, so not quite sure what his problem is. In the room bathroom I noticed what I thought was rust on top of a ventilation grill on the side of the bath, I wiped it with a tissue and it was plain old dirt. Not hygienic in a toilet area. To be fair my review may have been more positive had we been able to spend more time out of the hotel however I will not be staying there again nor recommending any one else does either.

Great hotel right on the beach.

This hotel is directly on the beach. It is a surfer hotel, with a surf school at the hotel. The rooms are not luxury rooms but they are comfortable and clean. The staff was very courteous, and breakfast was ok. The other hotels in the area are very expensive compared to this hotel. The restaurant in the hotel is nice and average as far as pricing goes. The beaches there in that area are very windy and the sun is very strong. When lying on the beach you need to somehow block the sand from flying at you if you are not on a chair. People there have a type of wall they erect, kind of like a tent and that does the trick as well. Definitely wear sunblock, you will not feel the sun until it is too late. The wind makes you feel cool the entire time. The windsurfers and kite surfers were having a blast. Would have totally taken kite surfings classes at the hotel if I had more time. All in all I would definitely go back the next time I am in Portugal.

Location, location, location - the rest is awful

We've spent 3 nights at this location, where you are directly ON (not at...) the beach... The location is outstanding. Everything else is not. A grimy pool, seemingly half abandoned for a decade, sinister rooms with substandard bathroom, dirty window panels were complemented by a 3rd world breakfast. Very disappointing. This should not be advertised as a 4 star unit but as a hostel with private rooms and toilets.

We stayed here for five nights and enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was good. The hotel is old fashioned but clean and tidy, nothing can beat the stunning views from the hotel. staff friendly and helpful.

Great Old World Charm, perfect location.

This hotel was exactly what I was looking for....a destination that had the location on the beach and was convenient to the airport. After arrival, I did not need to look outside of the hotel for food, beach or relaxation. It was fabulous and very affordable.

Good Holiday

I enjoyed a lovely week of rest, albeit during the winter when the weather was variable. The staff on the whole were hospitable and courteous, always ready to assist

The hotel is in need of some work, and the lighting perhaps needs improving, but my stay was comfortable, and in a location where I could recharge my batteries

Right on the beach

From the moment my daughter and I arrived we were made to feel very welcome and at home. The room we had was very nicely furnished and as it was a corner room it had dual aspect onto the ocean and so the view changed all the time. To some the bar and restaurant might seem dated, but I really liked the rustic feel, which was a great contrast to the innumerable homogenous chain hotels, which all seem to blend into one. Great location in all ways as it was no more than a minute to walk to the beach, which was perfect after wave dodging and also convenient for Cascais, which was 8/9 Euro by taxi. From there, 8 Euro got us into central Lisbon by train along the coast. Really can't recommend it enough, a real gem.

Beautiful view of the sea

We got a room with the sea view and that was great, as the view was incredible. The bathroom could use some work, but the room was comfortable and clean overall.

Hotel in excellent location by the beach

The hotel had lovely views and the staff were extremely helpful. It looked like some upgrade had been made to the bedrooms and breakfast room but unfortunately the rest of the hotel needed some serious updating. The pool area especially looked very run down but had wonderful views of the sea.

A week in Muchaxo Hotel, Cascais/Guincho

Arrangement went well but finding the hotel with TomTom was a nightmare. It ios licated in Cuincho despite the address being in Cascais. The hotel directions are vague therefore use the GPS settings not the Cascais postal code, i.e. Pria do Guincho - 38.729355,-9.474568 NOT 2750!!
The hotel could do with a general makeover. The reception, bar are dark brown and musky in colour and smell. The refurbished bedrooms facing the sea and the breakfast bedrooms are clean, modern and tidy. Maintenance is low key, with some paint peeling off the walls and bathrooms with rusty nails and many ols screw holes filled in. The beds are big, clean and comfy, the wooden floors rather dusty. TV is ok rather small and located high on the wall. International channels includes BBC World and CNN. Internet reception is none existent in the bedrooms but excellent near the reception and main entrance, it is however rather unreliable and slow when there are too many accessing it.
Car parking is a nightmare, since the hotel is located to such a popular beach, guests however do have preferential treatment in parking amongst the chaos of visitors and cars attempting to access the beach

Our stay

I loved the ambience inside. Lots of charactor, dark, old hacienda style. Would be great atmosphere in the winter as a lot of wood used everywhere. The sea views absolutley stunning. A sea view a must, we couldn't get one but caught a glimps of someone that did and it has to be done. I asked for an extra bed and breakfast and late checkout till 4.30pm. All done for free.
The extra bed had broken slats and my son was bitten all over! We may have got free requests because very dissapointingly the swimming pool wasn't full! Beach at the time to windy to sit on but there is another enclosed beach a little further down the road with lots of steps.
I asked for an egg on my steak but they put it in my soup instead lol. We only stayed one night which I think was enough even though I loved the place. The view from the breakfast room is spectacular. No hot food for brekki ! If you like brandy I recommend as they hit the glass up . Room very dated wouldn't say 4 star. Electricty card kept cutting out in our particular room but not in our kids. I would return it was unique.

Awful, avoid like a contagious disease.

Looks nothing like the pictures, which must've been taken at least 25 years ago...sold as a 4 star hotel, but resembles a scene from a 1970's horror movie, unclean, lethargic customer service, poor yet over priced food & the whole hotel smells like sewage. If you want to be by an average beach then fine, but you may as well pitch up a tent or sleep rough.
My wife & I stayed one night then moved to the Corinthia hotel which was Amazing.

Room was not up to the scratch. 1 light was broken and the stair case and 1 hall towards the breakfast hall has off smell..
