A cute little gem in the medina of Tangier. The owner was super friendly, hospitable, and accommodating. Breakfast was refreshing and the terrace views were amazing. The only issue, our room was very humid which made it slightly uncomfortable to sleep in. Otherwise, it’s a great place and we would come back.

The staff at Riad Arous Chamel was wonderful! Rachid made our stay feel like home and easy for us to navigate since we did not speak much of the local language. Breakfast was delicious, the hotel is gorgeous, and our stay was comfortable. Would definitely recommend if you are staying in Tangier!

The Riad was hard to find. I hurt my leg on the trip and they were not really willing to help. We cut our stay short with them and went elsewhere. It was very cold in there and no heater. It was just a bad experience for us.

If you’re a fan of bad services, broken promises, nagging and inconvenient accommodations, then this place is for you!
Be prepared to haul your luggage about half a kilometer to the Riad. Up and down stairs and hills. That’s really not bad. But when you arrive, you might get talked over by reception. Breathe deeply and let them show you your room. There will be no bathroom in your room. You’ll need to go down to the bottom floor, navigate a narrow stairwell with winding uneven height stairs in the middle of the night if nature calls. Don’t worry, you can hang a towel over the peephole in the bathroom door if you need privacy. If you’re really high maintenance and you don’t like the broken window in your room, your accommodated with a curtain that you can pull over the broken glass. We had to catch a flight and were leaving at 8:30 am the following morning. A taxi was arranged for the transport and that WAS perfect. Breakfast was supposed to be served for us at 8 since we were leaving early, a very nice gesture and we appreciated it. When we got to our table, the kitchen staff refused to give us our breakfast. The manager on duty went in to talk to the cook, she must have told him to leave, because he did. He told us that we wouldn’t get breakfast. Anyways, beautiful experience. Highly recommend this to people that I dislike.

Well-located traditional riad in the heart of the old city. You definitely have the feel of living in someones home. The bed was not the most comfortable, but breakfast on the roof was lovely and the people who run the place are friendly and attentive. Would stay again.

This is such an authentic experience. You won't get the flatscreen HDTV, you won't get the laundry service, you won't get the other amenities in a regular hotel. You get the real experience - narrow stairs, beautiful riad living, and a roof-top view that is to die for. If you are expecting a super comfortable bed, the easiest location to find, and a 24/7 concierge, go somewhere else. This is the real deal - prepare for real Tangiers living!

Was disappointed by the lack of heat and that the internet only worked in the communal area and not in the room. Its a nice building. And the management and staff are nice people. Just wasnt as welcoming as the other riads i stay at during my one week trip. Met some nice people who were staying there. Also the breakfast and the scenic rooftop was nice.. however no eggs. Just bread butter, jam and juice and tea/coffee. Was pricier than all the other riads i had been too and i went to some nice ones

Medina. Rashid recommended a restaurant called Restaurant Kasbah. It was good but
obviously an arrangement for gullible tired tourists as it was overpriced by Moroccan standards.

We loved the hotel and it's location. The staff was friendly and helpful especially Rachid. You should however take the ferry from Tarifa it will take you to walking distance to the hotel. We didn't know that and took the ferry from Algeciras instead and had to ride a taxi for one hour to get to the hotel

The Riad was difficult to locate at first, but then was easy enough once you know the main street. It's in the Medina, so the main street (out to the gates of the wall) is only a few feet wide. Day time staff was not available when we arrived but evening staff was friendly and they gave us a key to both out room and the outside door so we didn't feel threatened waiting to enter to riad waiting for the staff to buzz us in, as we were in other cities. Once inside the space is beautiful and the terrace has a wonderful view of the city.

Charming riad

This is a charming little place in the medina, and perfect for what we needed...
A cheap room as we arrived after midnight, which the riad kindly accommodated us for, and left by checkout time to continue our travels inland. And by charming, I mean that the doors and windows were a bit charming too (they didn't close properly) for the bathroom and the actual room doors and windows were also a bit sticky. Other than that, the place is safe, and we had a pleasant stay, and if it's just a bed you need in transit, I can highly recommend it. Friendly staff and a hearty breakfast too. It's a gorgeous building just in need of a little TLC. I always prefer authentic places to stay anyway :)

Good not great but everything you need.

This is generally a good place to stay! The location is in a good place in the medina. My room had a private bathroom that was on a different floor, which I was disappointed about. But I bet a lot of rooms have bathrooms in them? It is decorated fairly well - the owner is French so it doesn't feel as Moroccan as many places. It was a bit quiet and echoed - not really a place where people hang out in the small seating areas on the floors. There wasn't enough hot water - I took a bath, and it didn't stay warm for long enough to fill the entire tub. The wifi also had a very weak signal that I often lost. My room could clearly hear other buildings. Kids and adults playing at night, and I was awoken at 5am by people singing prayers in another building. Strange how it was so loud. The roof deck is nice and has a nice view, and breakfast is served there, made when you decide to take it. Orange juice, coffee, croissant, a few kinds of bread/crepe, jam, honey, butter, and fruit. This bed and breakfast type establishment was truly fabulous! It's located in the old Medina section of town where the old markets are, so don't expect palatial grounds, but once inside, you will be amazed. The place is a 250 year old courtyard house with truly beautiful Moorish architecture. All rooms surround the beautiful courtyard and have massive stained glass windows opening to the courtyard.Well prepare d full breakfast is on the garden roof. Fabulous and cheap shopping is just outside the door, as is a great Moreocan restaurant, The Medina.

Beautiful riad in the heart of the Medina

We had a great stay at Riad Arous Chamel. It was very close to some amazing restaurants and lots of shopping. The staff were very informative and recommended great places for us to go and even guided us there free of charge when necessary, as well as arranged taxis for our day trips. Free breakfast on the roof every day was definitely a nice touch.

One word \"terrible\"

This is the worst place that I've ever stayed at. It should be listed as a hostel. The riad is in the worst location. You get dropped off in the middle of a market and have to make your way through a labyrinth of streets. I would think that you could arrange for someone from the riad to meet you at the top of the street, but I'm sure that would be asking too much. A man appeared after I was dropped off and said he was family with the owner and took me to the riad. Of course he had nothing to do with the riad, but how would I know that. Then the staff at the riad said I should pay him.

The staff that I dealt with seemed to be very dishonest and lazy. When I arrived, the guy at the desk said he needed to make keys for my room. I'm not sure why this wasn't taken care of prior to my arrival; I had a reservation and arrived after 17:00. I waited in the courtyard and noticed a piece of paper, out in the open, with my name and room along with two others.

As for the room, the aircon barely worked. I asked the staff if it was working. He laughed with one of his friends, said of course, and continued what he was doing. The bed linen was stained. The toilet was dirty with yellow stains and had hair on the back of the seat. The shower drain filled up with water and went down 10 minutes after the shower. The room door was a shutter that I could barely fit through. It didn't lock properly and I was able to pull it open after I locked it.

Beautiful building, impossible to find

We had a map drawn for us by a friend in tangier and we were still unable to find this riad. We ended up having to pay 15€ to a hustler to bring us, and this guy continued to follow us for days trying to get more money. This was not the riad's fault, but we would recommend phoning them and asking for help if you get lost rather than paying a random person.

We were given a room that was beautiful but with no air conditioning, which we had paid for. We were able to switch rooms, and the staff were very kind about the mix up. The new room was very humid and damp and never dried out. The air conditioning unit also just really didn't work. It served only to cancel out the heat created by the dehumidifier.

The beds were very hard and we did not sleep well. Also, we were generally unable to connect to the wifi from our room, we had to sit in the common area.

The included breakfast was delicious and the staff at breakfast were very kind. You eat on the roof, with a beautiful view.

There is hardly anybody there. I don't like the fact that everything is tightly counted during breakfast, you get one small cup 10 oz orange juice and thats it. Also my room did not have a bathroom inside my room. It smells like mold inside. It is very well located in the medina.

Charming small hotel inside the medina.

Being in the heart of an old city is always a delight. Our street was so narrow a photo of the front door would be impossible, as was finding our way there by ourselves, all part of the ambience. The Riad Arous Chamel's staff was very accommodating, especially when our dehumidifier stopped functioning -- they miraculously produced another one. Breakfast on the rooftop terrace was relaxing; the coffee, croissants, and fruit were luscious; and the view enchanting.

Being in the medina means being close to souks, the Kasbah & museum, restaurants, the waterfront & beaches, and the ritzy neighborhoods up the hill. Because Tangier is on a steep hill, it also means walking up and down streets (including stairs) that will keep you in shape, especially if you're rolling luggage or carrying it up and down steps.

(A word of caution: don't take a tour the day you arrive. Tours will include being delivered to one or more shops, expected to buy, right now. We knew this, but after two days of traveling, we were too tired to think clearly, with predictable results.)

Very disappointing.

Quite difficult to find, but it is in the Medina and we were met and taken there. On first impression it looks quite pretty. My room was disappointing (my friend had the prettier room) and didnt even have a wardrobe. A coat stand was provided and a richety chest of drawers. The room was quite attractive but not user friendly! We noticed on the ground floor there was another room (door was open) that had terrible damp. Came back from an evening out, settled down in our rooms. Short time later a lot of noise and apparently a family arrived and then spent until 1.00am and later making a lot of noise. They had a separate bathroom so several had showers, and talking and walking around seemed to echo around. If you like your privacy this is not the Riad for you, you can hear every noise. There is a pretty terrace on the roof with amazing views, we had breakfast up there.
I hate giving bad reviews but I don't want other people to experience the lack of sleep we had, the next day we left and booked into another hotel, we didn't want to chance any more sleepness nights.
The staff were very nice, and helpful when we told them we were leaving. Made sure we got to our next hotel.

Great location, decor and personnel

We loved the riad. The building is a pearl in the middle of the medina. The owner is very nice as well as the rest of the staff and breakfast is delightful. Do not expect 5star European hotel beds, but real ordinary beds and bathroom. All very clean, quiet and well decorated. The riad has a beautiful terrace from which to see the city and where breakfast is served. We would totally indicate it for anyone willing to be at an original building.

Staying in the medina was a great experience, and this place offered a quiet landing spot within. The view from the top and the great breakfast spread was something we will definitely miss. Cozy riad in the hearty of Tangier's medina

We had difficulty finding the hotel and found ourselves relying on Google maps to navigate back to the hotel when we went out to explore the city. Staff was friendly but not always available. One rainy day, we would have liked to enjoy tea at the hotel, which according to the information in our room was possible. We couldn't find anyone and later learned that it was the day person's day off. It would be nice to have access to tea or coffee making facilities, especially when there were no staff to make it. We got by on our rusty Arabic. Owner was welcoming and helpful at breakfast but otherwise not around.

Welcoming Riad. Hard to find though! If you want to be right in the Medina then this is the place to be. Do not expect anything grand and particularly Western. Rashid and Bilal who manage it for the French owner are charming and helpful.

The hotel was impossible to find. The hotel itself is in a great condition and beautifully decorated. The terrace also is particularly nice with an excellent view over Tangier. However, it was frequently the case that there was absolutely no staff in the hotel. This included when we wanted to get beach towels. Instead we used the towels from our bathroom but we were told off for doing so when we returned to the hotel. Tangier itself really has very little to do but as a hotel it was nice enough, just lacking a little on the service.

Great hotel in center of medina..!!

Taxi met me at the airport as arranged by hotel, which was convenient. The hotel charge for the taxi is 13.50 Euros (one way), but dealing directly with a taxi driver at the airport will get you to the medina for about 5 Euros or even less. Pick up a map of Tangier w/medina at the airport information counter and you'll be able to find the hotel in the maze after the taxi drops you off. The hotel entrance is marked merely by a wooden door in the wall and a small sign. Knock hard on the door, as there is rarely an attendant standing by. Once inside, be prepared for a wonderful hotel experience; three floors and only seven rooms. My room had a detached bathroom, but it was not shared. No aircon, but the fan was enough to stay cool. Breakfast on the terrace was OK, tasty and filling, but nothing to jump up and down about. Breakfast supposedly begins at 8:30 am, but don't expect to find anyone around at that hour. I met the French owner, a very nice and warm man. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to experience life in the very heart of a North African medina, and if you don't look and act like a tourist, you won't be hassled on the street. The hotel will arrange transport to the airport for the same 13.50 Euros, but walk out of the medina and you'll find a much cheaper taxi on your own.

Never Again!

BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU BOOK AT THIS HOTEL! The amount you pay for your room will depend on whether your room will include a PRIVATE BATHROOM IN YOUR OR AIR CONDITIONING (they will NOT INDICATE that when you are booking). We asked for a fan, and they stated they wouldn't provide one. We will not be returning to this hotel. It was very complicated to find and dirty surroundings. I suggest booking a room in the new part of the city and tour the old city during the day. Be careful with your belongings, as the area is overly populated.

We absolutely loved the ambiance of this hotel. The staff went out go their way to make our visit a wonderful experience. Rooms were clean and well furnished. If you are looking for luxury this hotel is not for you. If you want a boutique type of hotel, this one is fabulous.

A lovely Riad restored to its former glory

This is a lovely Riad set out over 4 floors with a terrace where you have breakfast with views over the medina and to the beach.The rooms are clean and simple, but at the same time charming. The staff we met (including the owner) were lovely, especially Bilal who showed as round the medina. The only things to note are that there are no external windows in the rooms (internal ones looking into the courtyard only) and it is difficult to find the fierst time (although after a day walking around it is easy to find).

Very difficult to find right in the Medina.

Very very difficult to find in the centre of the Medina. Most locals didn't know it. Was pleased my husband spoke Arabic otherwise I would have been in a mess. The hotel staff were only around at breakfast time. If we had had a problem there was no one to contact. No information to contact Drs etc in an emergency.
No good for disabled people the hotel or to get to a taxi is about 10 min walk if you can find the place!!

El hotel tiene una decoración muy bonita.
Pero no son nada amables ni colaboradores.
No tienen el mínimo interés de ayudarte con nada.
Además Son poco claros con los precios Extra que cobran fuera de la reserva.

Contratamos una habitación con baño privado y resulta que Al parecer era solo nuestra( supongo que porque la otra habitación estaba vacía...) porque no era dentro de la habitación .
En fin, en mi opinión nada recomendable!

De hecho ahora estamos en chaouen y el servicio es excelente!!! Y el precio inclusive más bajo.

Riad en plena Medina, fue nuestra primera noche en Marruecos y el servicio muy atento para un primer acercamiento al país. Fue sin duda el mejor desayuno que tuvimos en toda la semana, ultra completo.

Reservamos una habitación económica, simple, con baño privado pero separado de la habitación (no hay problema, pero se puede avisar). En baño faltaba un par de toallas (una para los pies en la bañera y una de mano). Recomendado poner una cortina en la bañera para no mojarlo todo.

La habitación simple, el colchón algo antiguo y duro.

One Thousand and One Nights

Ein bezaubernder Riad im Herzen der Medina. Wir haben uns wärend unseres Aufenthalts sehr wohl gefühlt & das Personal war sehr bemüht um uns. Die Zimmer waren sauber und im typischen marokkanischen Stil eingerichtet.
Gefrühstückt wird auf der Terrasse wo man einen fantastischen Ausblick über die Stadt genießt. Das Frühstück selbst bietet genügend Auswahl und war für uns ausreichend und lecker. Wenn man den Riad verlässt ist man direkt im Zentrum der Altstadt und man kann sofort damit beginnen die Umgebung zu erkunden. Man flaniert an unzähligen Bazaren entlang & ist mitten im Geschehen. Die Menschen hier sind alle sehr aufgeschlossen, freundlich & hilfsbereit. Tanger ist einem wunderbare Stadt um Marokkos Seele Nähe zu erleben. DANKE Riad Arous Chamel für diese tolle Unterkunft, wir kommen gerne wieder!!!
Für diejenigen, die zum ersten Mal hier
nächtigen wäre zu empfehlen sich eine Wegbeschreibung mitzunehmen. Da der Riad sich in einer schmalen Gasse befindet und die Taxis einen am Platz davor aussteigen lassen.

Es preferible dejarse llevar hasta la entrada una vez en la medina, no es necesario pagar al \"guía\" dado que parecen ocuparse en el propio riad, de igual manera que visitar el restaurante recomendado para cenar lleva incorporado un hachazo del que a su vez cobrará el recepcionista que os acerque, algo muy habitual en Marruecos.
El sitio es muy auténtico y la ubicación es excelente dentro de la medina, es muy sencillo ubicarse una vez se conoce el camino y llegar a cualquier hora, ya sin necesidad de ayuda.
Es un lugar muy recomendable para descansar visitando Tánger, habitaciones cómodas, multitud de zonas comunes y estupendo trato con el cliente.
Su importante valor histórico y una terraza excepcional convierten esta opción, algo más cara de lo habitual, en un alojamiento muy interesante a considerar.

Enkel Riad med vacker takterrass

Riaden är väldigt klurig att hitta, vi gick fel flera gånger. En traditionell Riad med enkel standard. Det bästa med hotellet är takterrassen! Den är superfin med vacker utsikt. Frukosten är bra och god. Vi fick ett litet rum med toaletten en trappa ned.
