The room was in very good condition and clean. There were kitchenette facilities. The staff were very friendly. Even let me check in a little early.

Instead of on site breakfast they offer Bouchers for three local chic brunch spot spots which open from 7 to 12. They are Hollywood style with modern Instagram style breakfast options. This is quite a nifty idea, all three places are within walking distance.

Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and bottled water are all available and good quality. There is a coffee station where you can make a freshly ground brew whenever you want.

We absolutely loved this property. The hotel itself is wonderful, we loved our spacious room and the staff was incredible, always ready to help and make our stay as pleasant as possible. The property is in a very popular area, lots of night life, if you are early to bed, we recommend requesting a room away from the front of the hotel, which can be noisy. Great breakfast offered in a three different restaurants very close, plus an amazing amount of good restaurants in general. We highly recommend the property.

Good place, but some false descriptions

Nice place in a great location. A couple of caveats - the hotel's description states that standard rooms have a balcony. Okay, but it's only about 9 inches wide. Perhaps enough for a smoker standing sideways, but not what one a expects for a balcony. Also, the description on Hotels.com states that they have 3 restaurants and 5 bars. Not so, although there are restaurants on each side of the property.

Great staff, super informative and helpful. Lovely hotel with clean and stylish rooms. Located in a fun area which meant it was quite noisy at night. The light switches need a rethink. Even the guy working there had trouble figuring them out. Would certainly stay here again.

Great location on Kloof Street with variety of dining options. Walking distance to downtown, Long Street, museums and Company's Garden. Waterfront and Table Mountain Cable car is short Uber drive away. Fat Cactus bar (below hotel) is great place for a evening drink upon coming back from the tours. Would highly recommend.

Amazing. We came for the test match & it was reasonable to get to Newlands with Bolt. Hotel in safe area. We walked at night no problem. Jerry's for breakfast was lovely. We never exceeded the ZAR100 pp. Good to pop in for a night cap as the staff there were exceptional. We had 8 very comfortable nights and would not hesitate to return. We booked a front room as on a budget and were never disturbed by noise.

My group of four friends were lucky enough to secure a last-minute booking of four standard rooms at this divine boutique hotel. The rooms were large and well-appointed with very comfortable beds, while our breakfast the next morning was delicious! Definitely a repeat for us all, should we need to overnight in Cape Town again.

The staff was pretty good. There were a few who stood out. The property is located well with roughly all “neighborhood” services nearby, particularly for longer stays. It is within easy walking distance to most if not all CBD landmarks. There were a number of interesting neighborhood events nearby. The two restaurants downstairs and the mini-mall next door were very convenient. The building systems could use an assessment then an upgrade, but overall the property was good.

Location was great and hotel was clean. rooms could do with an update, but we both slept well on each of our 3 nights. We arrived very late on our first night and could have done with some help up the stairs to reception with our bags (there was no lift), but other than that the staff were good. We had a 100 rand pp allowance for breakfast which is in the restaurant below the hotel

We had several airlines delays and arrived at 2:00 am. The staff adjusted to each one, and our driver was cheerfully waiting for us, as was the receptionist for check in. The following morning, the front desk clerk helped print our tickets for table mountain before the driver they arranged took us on I’m lovely tour. We could not have hoped for better service from these wonderful people!

I always book room 103 or 104 as they are refurbished and in very good condition. Only problem with the hotel is that it is noisy as of 06.00 because the stairs are just outside the door and people never seem to realize that loud voices carry and disturb others. Staff are lovely, cleaners are excellent, and the whole experience is cool.

Staff very helpful. Hotel is nicely appointed and comfortable. We had a room on the second floor on the street which was quite noisy from the bar/restaurant downstairs until mid evening. Tre check-in clerk however asked if this was a problem before we checked in and we were happy to take it anyway because of a physical disability. It turned out to be no problem anyway and it was our choice. We'll stay there again if the opportunity exists.

The room was spacious, clean and comfortable and the mini kitchen area well equipped. We were at the rear of the building so did not hear any noise from the street. The breakfast voucher to use at adjacent 'Jerry's' was more than adequate for a really good breakfast. The position is good in a vibrant area with lots of great restaurants and cafes close by and a supermarket and chemist just around the corner. As two females we felt quite happy and safe to walk to the nearby resturants in the evening, and in the daytime along Kloof and Long streets, being aware and using all the usual precautions. Thank you to the lovely receptionist who helped to find an emergency dentist for me.

Good location but better get a room facing inside to avoid the noise from two bars to left and right of the hotel. Sharon at reception was really nice and helpful. No elevator, no facilities on site, which are ok to me as I didint stay in room much. WiFi was unreliable, needed patience. Overall a good value for the price.

The Hippo was great - there is a lively bar downstairs that plays its music pretty loud - but luckily they don’t keep it going that late - and it is good music! But that is my only complaint (I like to go to bed early and my room was right above the bar), everything else was excellent and I will definitely be coming back!

Great choice of hotel in an amazing location

It's your basic, clean hotel in an amazing location! Staff was always present, attentive and friendly. For the price you are paying, it's a good deal. The only issue was that nights can get very noisy depending on which room you are in - if you are in a room facing one of the bars, it can be problematic if you are a light sleeper. All that being said, I will definitely be back here next time I am in CPT.

I was aware of the one flight of stairs, therefore, that was not a problem to me.
The room was very spacious and it was the only place where they provided slippers. (I stayed in three places during my visit).
Adding a mini kitchen is quite thoughtful and helpful.
Three issues were disappointing; 1. The room had many cockroaches, 2. For some reason, the internet was not working on my apple laptop, and being a work-related trip this was quite important. However, they did try to sort it out but they had not solved it by the time I left. 3. There was a dirty towel at the corner table when i checked in. I forgot to ask them to remove it and it was still there by the time i left.

We spent 3 nights here. The location is perfect for exploring Cape Town and is on a very safe street, just off Kloof street, which is great for restaurants, cafes and bars.

We asked for a quiet room, and were given one at the back of the hotel. This was certainly quieter than it would have been at the front, which is above a lively bar, but the sound proofing in the room wasn't great which meant we could hear others going to and from their rooms quite clearly. This would be fine if you are not light sleepers. The room was extremely spacious with good facilities, and a very nice bathroom. The bed was large and comfortable. The floors in our room could have been a little cleaner and the communal areas look tired and a bit bland for a \"boutique\" hotel.

There is off-street parking which is a definite plus point, since leaving your car on the street is not recommended.

We would highly recommend this hotel. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable with all the usual hotel facilities (tea, coffee, kettle, wi-fi etc) and they include a small kitchen area and air conditioning. We had a back facing room which was very quiet. There are plenty of good eating places and convenience stores nearby. The hotel provides vouchers for breakfast and they can be used at three nearby cafes. We would recommend them all, but Knead was our favourite. Each guest gets a 100 Rand voucher, which is enough for a good breakfast and coffee. The staff at the hotel are great and upon arrival we were given a glass of wine and some recommendations for places to visit in Cape Town. There is a well served bus route at the end of Park Road that takes you directly to Table Mountain and the beautiful Camps Bay beach or into Cape Town, where you can connect with other bus routes. Plenty of places are also within walking distance. The area around the hotel is bustling with locals and tourists and feels safe.

The hotel is in between the central city and Table Mountain and the doorway to peninsula sites. Lots of good restaurants nearby. Can’t say enough good about the helpful staff and their contacts to tours and good drivers. The Hippo was an important background to a great stay in a lovely city. Not a single complaint but one caveat - request a room at the back away from the lively front restaurants if you want to sleep well.

Happy Hippo Boutique hotel.

Great find! We left booking to the last moment, not a smart move during South African peak holiday period.
The location is great, in the city bowl, close enough to the Cape Town Waterfront, cable car to Table Mountain and to the main exit routes from the city. Many restaurants and bars in the area which still has the old Cape Town character and charm, unlike the newer, more glitzy but soulless tourist areas. It doesn't really matter that it is not right at the sea as Cape Town requires and deserves travelling around quite a bit.
Room was very large with enough space for 2 extra beds and also includes a small \"kitchenette\" with microwave if you decide to eat in. The hotel looks quite new and recently decorated.
Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel has a quiet calm atmosphere and is has been decorated in a modern and charming fashion. There is also ample safe parking.
Great value for money. I would readily recommend this hotel. We stayed there for 2 days before travelling to the nearby wine farms for a few nights. We enjoyed the Hippo Boutique Hotel so much that we returned there after our wine-lands trip.
Definitely worth considering for a Cape Town stay.

In addition to a shower, there was a large bath tub in the bathroom. Location was excellent as there were supermarkets, shops and restaurants nearby and it wasn't that far to walk to downtown areas.

Be careful of room 120 or rooms facing the street

The room itself is nice, but on Friday and Saturday nights it's very, very loud in my front-facing room. You're above two extremely active tourist bars. Cool if you're into partying, bad if you're not. When I complained at check out, the woman suggested I had not closed the windows and drapes properly. She was mistaken. Just be aware if you're there over the weekend in a front-facing room -- during the week I imagine it's fine.

Close to restaurants & great view of Table Moutain

While in Cape Town, my husband and I bounced back and forth between cities and hotels. I had pre-booked to stay at this hotel upon arrival for a few days, travel down to Hermanus and then stay again before taking off for safari. The first stint was ok - the staff is absolutely great but we got the first room off of the lobby and it's located directly above a restaurant/bar. The noise wasn't an issue until the weekend but everytime we went to our room, it smelled of the food they were cooking downstairs. We laughed it off the first day but after the second and third, all of our clothes (including those in the luggage) smelled.
When we returned from Hermanus, I politely asked for a different room and they very nicely provided us one. The room had been updated more recently, had a sliding door with a balacony and did not smell like food!
Overall, the hotel staff was great and the location is pretty good. Easy walking to a number of restaurants and bars. The hotel also had private parking which is a huge plus especially in that area.

The room was clean, well stocked with lovely smelling shower gel, shampoo, hand wash, hand lotion, bedroom slippers and clean towels . The extra blanket was very warm and the wi-fi worked perfectly. Very Good Accommodations for Cape Town

Management was great. Rooms were as good as some \"better\" places in the USA. Not many buildings in S. Africa have forced-air heating (like zero), most have very inefficient space heaters, heating panels, towel heaters(really!). Our rooms at the Hippo were not an exception; we had to wear jackets and other layers to stay warm in the middle of winter (only down to 45-deg F - I'm sure the room was not nearly that cold). They just do some things different here in Cape Town (like showers dripping straight down from directly overhead).

A nice hotel for the price. A little away from the beachfront and downtown. And a little noisy on the weekend. Breakfast are fabulous!

Very clean, spacious room.

We had a wonderful stay at Hippo Boutique Hotel. The room was very spacious and had a mini kitchen with plates and silverware utensils which was very convenient. the hardwood floors made it feel very home-y and cozy and the room seriously looked like it had just been remodeled! The only small issue that we had was the shower doors which were slightly broken so it was hard to open but other than that, our stay was great! Would definitely recommend!

Hippo was a great hub for our Cape Town visit. The room was clean and comfortable, and we didn't deal with any of the street noise other guests mentioned. Staff was friendly and helpful. The location is perfect and pretty central to everything - and walking distance from a lot of great spots!

The location of this small boutique hotel is a great one if you like to be in the city center. Happening street with nice restaurants and attractions in walking distance. Hotel provided breakfast vouchers valid at three nearby restaurants. We loved our room, very spacious, with a couch, coffee table, desk and kitchenette. My only two issues: spotty cleaning service and when the one person behind the reception desk needs to vacate that spot for anywhere from 5-10 minutes, at least leave a note for guests on the desk to say \"will be right back?\" One night we rang the buzzer for the hotel door several times with no response. We were able to enter the hotel lobby via the bar/restaurant next door. Once at the reception desk and ringing the bell for service, still no one showed up (we needed our room key). An employee at restaurant tried to help, as did another hotel guest who came out of his room. Finally the person on duty returned. He apologized and he was maybe absent for about 15 minutes, but it was our first night there and caused us some anxiety as we were very tired and saw ourselves sleeping on the hotel lobby furniture! That said, everything else was fine and we enjoyed the rest of our stay (total of four nights).
