This is by no means a 5 star resort. I dont like to moan but this was our 4th 5 star hotel throughout Vietnam and does not compare to any of the others. Breakfast was basic, no speciality coffees offered, place needed redoing etc cracks in walls, mold on tiles, paint chipping everywhere. The private beach is barely a beach, and half of it is covered in litter and whole dead rotting fishes. Hotel is not busy but yet still have to wait 15 mins to get served at pool bar due to one member of staff. No waiters offering drinks either. However the restaurent food for dinner that was a la carte was lively and so were the staff in there.
I think this appears to be a poor management/owner issue not the staff.

The resort is tired and needs a really big renovation. Loungers are breaking, and the water sports equipment is broken and they are not replacing it so there are literally no activities in the resort at all.

Bathrooms are tired and not very clean. Outdoor furniture by the rooms have no cushions so too uncomfortable to be sat on. They won’t even give you an iron and want to charge for everything.

Staff are friendly but need training. We ordered the kids two spag bowls one night and one arrived and the other took another 40 mins to arrive. Restaurant and resort is a bit soulless with little atmosphere. Breakfast buffet is ok.

They offer an airport shuttle but apparently it was fully booked when we tried to book it.

The location isn’t great - you have to order a taxi or grab to go anywhere. Nothing is in walking distance of the resort.

The private beach is so small, you can’t fit a lounger on there and it disappears at high tide.

This place is definitely not 4 star!!

The Shell Resort & Spa Phu Quoc did not live up to its 5-star rating during my stay. Even with a premium ocean-view room booked months ahead and also arranged an airport pickup, so the resort knew exactly when we would arrive and should have had the room prepared. The room was not properly cleaned or maintained—hair everywhere, stained outdoor furniture, a cracked tub, and outdated interiors. It took far too long to reach a manager, and when I finally did. The manager on duty mentioned that all ocean-view rooms had similar wear and tear. He offered me a villa room—which was actually cheaper than what I had originally paid—and two spa vouchers. At that point I accepted the offer because I didn’t want to deal with more back-and-forth, but it still didn’t make up for the higher price I paid (over $100 USD per night for a 4-night stay).

If the resort is aging, it should adjust its star rating or renovate to match the standards of a true 5-star property. I recommend renovations, including fresh paint, power washing, and updated interiors.

To be honest, if the rooms and facilities are this run down, the resort should reconsider its 5-star rating. Google AI’s definition of “5-star” reflects top-tier luxury, exceptional quality, and proactive service, and this resort did not meet those expectations.

That said, the pool, breakfast, transportation, and room service were great.

My villa room was huge & looked comfy! However, my blanket was discovered dirty and towels on the third day were also soiled. Property is dated and furnishings are old. Aircon in the Flow Restaurant was not working during my entire stay. Don't expect top-notch service from the staff; if they ever greet you a "Good morning" or "Hello", that's the best they can do.
Property is about 15-20 mins ride away from the town area, and it's not possible to walk out to the main road. Only 1 restaurant is available for lunch & dinner, and food options are limited. Breakfast spread is considered normal. Fortunately, it's still affordable to get a ride to town and night market area.
It's a good resort away from the hustle and bustle of life cos their villa room is big, the property is huge with lots of greenery and they have their own private beach, though next time, I would just stay for 2 nights only.

The hotel was beautiful and in a wonderful location. It was very quiet. We stayed in one of the rooms by the beach and the view was spectacular, especially of the sunsets each day.
Service was a bit slow in the restaurant but breakfast was self serve and well stocked.

This so-called “5-star hotel” was, without a doubt, the most horrifying experience of my life. If there were a negative rating, I would use it. From the moment I stepped in, it became clear that this place was a complete scam.

Let’s start with the room: dirty, damp, and crawling with geckos. Now, I get it—geckos are common in some regions—but I didn’t expect to share my bed with them! Speaking of the bed, the linens were disgusting: stained, unwashed, and emitting a musty odor that made me question if they’d ever been cleaned.

And then, the cherry on top: bloodstains. Yes, actual blood on the carpet and one of the walls. I don’t know what went down in this room before my arrival, but it was enough to make me feel like I was in a crime scene rather than a luxury hotel.

The bathroom was equally appalling. The tiles were cracked, the shower barely worked, and there was mold growing in the corners. To make things worse, housekeeping clearly didn’t do their job—the trash bin was still full of garbage from the previous guest!

The “amenities” were no better. The pool looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks, with murky water and broken loungers scattered around.
I tried to raise my concerns with the staff, but they were indifferent and dismissive. The manager was nowhere to be found, and no one seemed remotely interested in addressing the multiple issues I brought up!
The only thing this place deserves 5 stars for is how quickly it made me want to leave. Stay far, far away!

Ocean View Room had an amazing view! The room was nice. Only complaint was service. Housekeeping did not leave us with clean towels, had to always request. Called to have toilet leak fix numerous times before someone came out. Service was extremely slow and lacking. Also lacking was the selection of restaurants on site, there was only 1 restaurant and 1 lounge on the property. Activities offered were lacking as well. The hotel is not conveniently located near shops and restaurants so having to call taxi/Grab costed a lot every day. The hotel does not seem to be upkept and seem old and not very modern compared to other hotels and was told this was one of the first hotel built on the island.

The Shells is a very nice sea side resort. The pool is beautiful and beach access is convenient and clean. Our bungalow was large and well appointed. It had a shower and separate tub. Lots of storage room. We were a short walk to both pools and restaurants.
Although all of the staff were friendly, we did find the service to be slow, especially while utilizing the lounge chairs. Service at the bar was pretty much non existent. The system of having to wave a red flag to get service is terrible; I once waved the flag for twenty minutes and finally gave up. The lunch and dinner food was good. The breakfast provided many options and was also good, but get there early as they tend to stop making things by the end.

The property was not as advertised. This could have been due to it being off peak season. Our room phone was broken so we couldn’t order room service as was our tv. The garden maintenance around our villa was poor. There is no sand at the beach. There is only one restaurant. Food was ok. The breakfast variety was ok also. Please note that this villa is far from anywhere. Took us 30 mins to get to grand world and casino and restaurants were also far. There was zero entertainment. They played music at the pool twice during our stay. Overall I wouldn’t stay here again.

The best thing about this resort was it's staff. The resort itself was advertised as a 4 to 5 Star resort. given my extensive travel I would rate this resort in its current condition with consideration of the staff only a one star. place is run down outdated room decor in dire need on a complete refurbishing. You can not make something old, dirty damaged unkept any different except when taking photos from a distance that will not show up the problems as they have done in their presentation. The management spoke to us before we left and asked us for some feedback and we gave them the exact same response as above. We respectfully told them that unless things change dramatically we could not see ourselves returning even though the location is great.

Everything is downgraded and dirty.
The room floor was not clean, fridge and fans were missing, the bathtub cannot be used because it cannot be drained. The sink in the restroom drain is stuck as well. Outside balcony is full of ants and the staff here does not greet you. They have their own “taxi services” which is kind of suspicious. The buffet area was hot because their AC wasn’t working properly. Im glad on stay there for 2 nights.

The Shells has really lovely staff and a 24/7 buggy service to get around the resort (from pools to room or restaurants/reception). However, the resort rooms lack cleanliness as the once beautiful white tiles have a yellow tinge to it. I sympathise with the choice of white as Phu Quoc can get very hot and white is less likely to retain the heat. I trust that they are clean, however, upon first glance, feel a little put off. The rooms are spacious and the pool is nice to use. 2/3 of the pools were under maintenance and I believe that they will reopen at the end of 2024. The shells is a decent stay, however I don’t believe it is still the 5 star resort it once was.

I recently had a highly disappointing experience at "The Shells Resort and Spa" in Phu Quoc, Vietnam. Despite being advertised as a luxurious 5-star hotel, the reality was a stark contrast. The cleanliness was severely lacking, with evident signs of neglect – from mold in the shower and bath to pervasive cracks in the walls. The rusty steel fixtures left unsightly rust marks on various surfaces.

The promotional pictures are misleading, showcasing a beauty that the actual hotel doesn't live up to. Having paid over $1000 (AU) for a 4-night stay, we expected a certain standard, but this turned out to be one of the worst hotels we've encountered in Vietnam. Dishearteningly, we decided to check out within an hour of checking in.

To add to the disappointment, our 4-night stay was prepaid, and the hotel is currently refusing to refund our money our meet us somewhere half-way. This experience has left a bitter taste, and I strongly advise against choosing "The Shells Resort and Spa" if you seek a truly enjoyable and clean stay in Phu Quoc.

The view from this property is stunning. The pool is huge and faces the beach. We rented a bike at the property itself for a decent amount. They also provide cabs at the same fare as Grab taxis. However this is a resort and hence is only for those who like a little peace and quiet.

Canceled our transfer getting to our hotel because we couldn’t call and tell them our flight was delayed. We could not call as we were stuck in the plane due to bad weather. After the first night we didn’t get housekeeping done even though we had requested it. Second day, they showed up and we had already done the room so they gave us new water and toiletries. The day after again no housekeeping so on our way out we requested it, they came and only made the bed and gave us no water and no fresh toiletries. The room door run out of battery and we were locked out. Someone came and fixed it. Also the air conditioner was not working and they say someone would attend to the room to fix it which didn’t happen. The fan wasn’t working and they told us it was for decoration purposes (we saw the controls on the wall and it wasn’t working). Tried to use the bath and took about 45 mins to 1 hour to have it ready as the water pressure is next to none so by the time the bath has enough water the water was cold as it also doesn’t come to warm…There was a lady in reception who was very nice and went out of her way to apologise about the transfer from the airport leaving us stranded and she organised a complimentary transfer back to the airport on departure. The staff at the liquid lounge was very nice and the food was very good. The condition of the hotel is not to what it looks like in the pics. Very unique hotel with entrance from main road into small alley type road that had us concerned at first sight.. but eventually it reached the front of the resort which reassured us that we had arrived.. resort is fairly large and has continuous golf carts service to take you around.. room was spacious and had lovely views.. pool was large and had swim up bars. Private Beach was very close to pool and was very nice to swim or kayak in.. staff was friendly and nice.. one strange thing was hot water had intervals of about 5 minutes. it would cut out for 20 seconds and come back on again.. found that strange from such a large fancy resort

Very helpful staff. Morning buffet is wonderful, easy transportation to the night market. Transportation provided to cable car / water park. (about 45 min) . Nice pool and beach and kayaks. Interesting rock architecture in room and throughout location. Rock in water areas of room could be a little cleaner. All sheets etc clean but the rock shows a little natural wear. Given that it is quiet and there is less staff, it's understandable this could be overlooked. Had a great experience overall. Phu quoc is great

The room is spacious but the interior is functional obsolescent/poorly designed. There are not enough drawers to store clothes so we had to leave our clothes in the suit cases. The closet does not have a door so things look messy. There are 3 sinks in the room but none is convenient to be used for make up for women: (1) one next to the toilet with no drawers and mirror, (2) One in the kitchen area but no mirror, (3) one in front of the closet but the mirror is 1 meter away. There are few drawers to keep/organize things. I had to put things on the counter. I ended up losing my swimming goggle because there was no place to put it.

Needs a lot of effort to become 5* resort

Please check your doors if staying in the bungalows - ours didn’t lock and took around 2 hours of staff trying to fix the door before establishing we could move rooms. Beach was unfortunately not as clean as it first appears - loads of plastic and rubbish to the right hand side. We experienced very bad weather which you can’t help but there was no entertainment or indoor activities to participate in and we literally spent a lot of time in our room as a result. Resort also has issues with power going off frequently if it’s stormy.
2 pools at the hotel but only 1 open - no pool bar open and the hotel bar closes at 9 - breakfast choices limited compared to other 5* hotels we have recently stayed in.
We have been travelling around Asia for the last month and have chosen to stay in 5* hotels and this was by far the worst out of the 7 we have stayed in so far. It has the potential to be 5* but would require a lot of effort - whilst the staff were all very friendly the hotel itself lets them down. I feel saddened to be so honest but feel this is a fair review and at best would rate this as 3*+ having compared to other hotels not only in Asia but around the world.

We booked for this hotel because it was rated 5 stars. But to our disappointment it was nothing close to it. The property was dated. There were ants as soon as we had a piece of cookie even though it was in the box. Staff service was ok but they kept forgetting our bath towels and other amenities since day one! Stair steps were not safe especially for elderly people or disabled people. They offered shuttle service to airport but they were late that we thought we may miss our flight. Overall we were not happy with our stay and we would not come back.

Gorgeous resort, sad state of a beach and island

What a gorgeous and unique resort in a lush, beach front setting with well-thought out landscaping. The room villa was spacious and sunny, but private as well. Well worth the rate. The staff was very helpful and kind to our family.

I would stay again, but I’d like to challenge the hotel to do better in terms of “eco-friendliness.” Plastic straws, for one, can be substituted for a biodegradable option or another material. In addition, I would love to see the resorts invest some money into educating and helping the local population about trash and plastic. It will be the ruin of Phu Quoc, Vietnam, and our world if reusables are first of all reduced, and secondly disposed of properly. I’ve never seen more trash on a beach and in the ocean, and along the road. It’s honestly heart breaking. After Tet particularly, every piece of trash was left to blow in the wind and into the beautiful ocean.

We can work together to stop this if those with influence, aka, Sun Group or whatever that companies called, and all the resorts give back to the community through aforementioned steps.

Staff are excellent, flexible, accommodating, and professional. It has a very cozy private beach, and restaurant food (esp Vietnamese food) is wonderful. While we really enjoyed our stay at The Shells, we have 3 days where garden parties were held, and due to the estate configuration, it was pretty noisy. We were however offered a free fruits plate to compensate...! Internet is a little unstable, but it may have something to do with the Vietnam's connectivity issue at the moment.

The resort is very large and it is quite difficult to walk out of the resort however bikes and scooters are available.

Pool bar without a barman, very expensive mediocre restaurant Questionable maintenance policy. Broken A/C in bedroom. Dirty walls and windows everywhere. Had to fight them to keep my passport - ridiculous lies about having to hold onto it until I depart.

Beautiful resort. Very comfortable beds, gorgeous pool & stunning beach. The rooms are quite luxurious. The resort is rather remote so must take taxi or rent motorbike to get in to town. Good for quiet secluded time

The resort is far away from the city and so it is pleasantly quiet. It is surrounded a lot of trees and bamboos. There were ants in the restroom but the staff took care of the ants after I informed them. Also when the hot water was turned on, there was like rusted water came out. I informed the the hotel staff about it and they corrected the problem.

When we asked for a late checkout, an employee clearly said that the late checkout was free. But the next day, the employee was invisible and the manager said it couldn't be free. There is also our fault that we have not confirmed or confirmed the employee's name. But something is suspicious and we don't feel good.

Most of the staff were very friendly, yet the communication at times was testing to say the least. Villas are fairly basic inside and the mattress was very firm. We needed to ask for extra duvets to put on top. The shared pool was well maintained and very clean and to be honest was the best bit about the Shells, at least for us. It was peaceful up until our last night, when two Russian couples moved in next to our villa and decided to make the whole of Phu Quoc aware of their presence by being loud around the pool past midnight and only stopped when security told them to keep quiet. Unfortunately, they then decided the midnight pool party was not enough and resumed with more of the same at 6am.

The beach is non existent and rocky, the sea was murky, which was extremely disappointing as in the pictures it looked beautiful and was really the main reason we booked the resort.

Whoever said in their review that the beach was beautiful could not have been on the same beach. One final note, not that I am opposed to backpacking, but I have never been to a 5 star hotel anywhere in the world where there were so many back packers staying.

On a bad day I would rate the hotel a 3 star and on a good day, at a push maybe a 4 star.

Conclusion, would I return? Definitely not.

A week stay

We stayed my husband and I for a week. We liked our sea view room untill we found out that the room is full of ants. We liked it overall but sometimes the service/ food was not there... however the morning buffet was great!

Had a great stay in resort, the rooms were clean.
Nice and clean beach, pools were okay - these need some maintenance.
Had an issue with the first room, air-con died, room was changed quite quickly.

The location is quite good, only 100k VND to city/night market by taxi.

The food was a bit expensive side, but the taste and portions were great.

This is about the best hotel we have ever stayed in and we have been travelling the Far East for over twenty years. The room was outstanding, the bed very comfortable. Breakfast was fabulous, the choice and quality of the food was tremendous. Lunch in the afternoon was not as expensive as most high end hotels. The staff were very attentive and couldn’t do enough for you, always with a greeting and a smile. Would strongly recommend staying here. Only down side was you had to get a taxis to other shops and restaurants but very cheap and no great hardship.

Very nice complex with private beach and pools.

Very nice hotel with a number of pools and private beach. Was probably wonderful when it was new but it's a little dated in places and looks like it must be quite needy in terms of ongoing maintenance. Staff are friendly and there is always somebody close by able to speak in English.

Enjoyable stay

We stayed for 7 nights in a luxury garden villa. The room was very big and comfortable. Housekeeping needs improvement, they never even checked or cleaned the shower. Nice breakfast with vast variety of foods. Two massive pools with plenty of sun lounges. No pool bar open, no cushions set up for double lounges.
Staff was polite and helpful. If you want to go into town or a restaurant you have to catch a taxi, which is never a problem, they are always available right outside the hotel

The room was as pictured, huge and clean. Highlight of our stay.

They're not there yet with customer service, specially for the value of one night: the shuttle driver made us wait 20 minutes for another couple but then sent us to the hotel in a taxi with no explanation. Also, they had no bars open, neither by the pool, the beach or the main restaurant. We had to "chase" down a server to get a drink, and saw the frustration in other guests faces.

The food was very good. They are doing some updates. Rooms were nice floors just needed buffing for some stains. Beach was nice the staff and the singer's for dinner were great and super friendly. Both pools were nice.

The lush garden setting of the individual garden bungalows,the clean modern lines of the decor and the spaciousness of the rooms. The staff were pleasant and accommodating at all times. All the workers were pleasant and courteous, smiled and greeted us even if they were just driving past in a buggy The pool and the beach area was beautifully kept and the ocean view fabulous. After the cities it was blissfully cool, peaceful and relaxing.

Stayed for last couple of days of our stay in Phu Quoc for some R&R. The rooms felt fairly aged and in need of some maintenance and pest control as there was ants crawling in the room. There is limited options for food at the resort. There seems to be no air conditioned areas to chill out other than reception or the room which was pretty inconvenient considering how hot it was during our stay.

We were meant to recover Airport transfers but never received it, and the manager was terrible and far from helpful. It took over two hours to check in. Don’t go here, I am so disappointed with the place. And the beach, extremely poor. How can this be voted as one of the best beaches.

Lovely hotel away from the busy town

Lovely corner ocean view villawith huge balcony. Only downside is the water pressure for the bath tub was so slow and it takes forever to fill up.

The hotel is located deep inside and there is nothing nearby. To get to the town you will need a cab that will cost you around 90k dong. Please prepare some drinks and snacks if you plan to just stay in the resort. The resort offered free kayaking activity. The pool was gorgeous. Breakfast was ok. Reception and buggy drivers were very friendly and helpful.

We were here for 5 days. I couldn't decide between the beach front rooms or the bungalow. So we split the stay between two rooms. Both rooms were absolutely lovely. the set up on the beds both facing the window is a brilliant idea. Showers are amazing.
If you want a little more privacy around and inside the room stay at the bungalow. its much bigger than the ocean front rooms.
I would recommend the ocean front rooms to couples!!
Also the property is located in a more rustic area of the island which we loved.
