For me Speke Hotel was nearly perfect. The location was close enough to the heart of the city but in a very quiet district. The onsite dining and food options were diverse and very entertaining, with a great ambiance. Excellent hospitality, warm, caring and eager without motive, always available and accommodating.

Thank you Darshan and staff for making my stay there very memorable. I will see you again my friend.

On the whole very pleasant. Polite and helpful staff. Except that the girl at reception always tries to give us a room that is cheaper than the one we have booked and paid for. This has happened twice in a row.
On thé plus side the manager has contacted us when we had left a bag by mistake and we got it back.

One of the worst hotels I have stayed in

Initially I booked an apartment-it is not clear from the site that you have to walk across a muddy car park to get there. The apartments are really poor quality. So I upgrade my 2 day stay to a room, which was nicer but still not in the main hotel. I paid USD 15 for this but when I came to check out I had to pay another USD 15. There was no hot water in the room and the shower attachment leaked terribly. I was offered a room change because of the water but a friend who was staying there said he too had no hot water so there seemed little point. The reception staff are uninterested generally. The breakfast is poor.

Standard Apartment at the Speke

I booked a standard apartment for 4 nights, which was bigger than expected but pleasant. It is not in the hotel, but out the bar area and across a parking bay. Not a problem for me, and the autonomy of an apartment makes it worthwhile. The staff was friendly and helpful, the Indian food in the Khyber Pass was probably the best I've had. The kitchen in the apartment was stocked with plates and cookware, stove and fridge worked as well. I would definitely stay at the Speke again and I highly recommend it.

Ambiance and price friendly hotel in City Center

The hotel is very reasonably priced to nearby alternatives - and very conveniently located - in Kampala city. The hotel has a nice old ambiance .... some services are a bit run down and the breakfast is of poor quality. The staff is friendly and old school. The hotel doesn't have a gym - but its sister hotels have and you get access to those excellent facilities (a 12-minute drive). .

Old Charm

I loved this hotel, it's old and quaint with large rooms, powerful showers and old school toilets. Its got charm and style that some of the modern hotels lack. The staff were friendly and helpful. It is right in the centre of town so it's a bit noisy with traffic going past throughout the night. Better to ask for a room at the back.

The only thing I will criticise is the food, the bread and cakes at breakfast were stale, and the restaurant doesn't serve local food.

Other than that, I am a happy customer and will stay again.

Which Speke you choose ?

I made a mistake thinking I booked Speke resort and in fact it was thé other Speke in city center.
I vé been charged 80 dollars for staying Speke resort with 2 meals and 2 breakfast.
I took it.
Potentially I m not alone being a kind of victim of thé confusion between thé two places.
I love Speke resort AT thé point WE stayed even sunday afternoon. Globaly for this moment I spent 230 euros and not even a coffee has been offered...

This is a very nice hotel, and where I always stay in Kampala if I'm not up for spending the amount required for one of the five star hotels. It has a nice charm, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It is also a central location. My one concern on this trip is that the pictures are deceptive. I have always been given a room that looks like the pictures - with a sitting area that has windows. On this trip, they tried to give us all small rooms, without any sitting area. I was told that it is the same room. Of course, that is not what the pictures show though, and it is a very different type of room and experience, especially since we needed a little meeting space. Eventually they were willing to move one of the three rooms to be in one as per the pictures, but I am still not sure if the person at check-in made a mistake, or if they have deceptive pictures. Either way, this should be fixed.

I didn’t like them charging vat on drinks prices shown in the menu when it was included in the food prices shown. Eg. 6000Ush for a beer became 7400Ush.

My wife had fallen ill due to her time of the month and trying to keep up with me exploring the city and the hotel staff helped us get medicine that had her back up and on her feet within a day's time. The hotel is a little pricey, but it is worth it considering other options that are \"cheap\", but give you no service whatsoever. The staff was great and attentive. There are three restaurants onsite, so one has many options for meals. It's very quiet at night and the Internet works quite well. It is the first time I haven't had to tether my phone to use the Internet at any hotel at which I have stayed in Kampala.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly.

stayed here three nights. This was my second time staying here in the last year.
GOOD - They have a nice breakfast from 7-10. They do work with and support Hotels.com
BAD - On Hotels.com it said it was an apartment, in small print, watch the print. It does have a kitchen but it is small, a small fridge. The apartments are separate from the rest of the hotel but some distance, like the other end of the city block.
UGLY - Where do I begin.!! It was that bad. I WILL NEVER stay in the apartments again, not knowingly. It is way way far away from the rest of the hotel, I was at one end of the city block and breakfast was at the other end, the path to breakfast was either the street side walk or through a muddy parking Its lot of dirt and through a metal gate that is locked from midnight until 7am. The parking lot is terrible, no pavement all dirt. The hotel rents out the lots to car washing ppl, so if you park your car there at 10pm there will be very few cars there but then you wake up the next day at 9am and your car is surrounded by 200, yes 200 other cars and there is no way in H*** you are getting your car out of there. So you park in the main hotel parking lot which is at the other end of the block. Try carrying your luggage one entire block. S***, I hated this apartment situation.. And, the staff harassed me and my fiancee, thinking she was a prostitute and all white men are Whoremongers. Thats not professional.!!!

A Great Hotel in Central Kampala

I really enjoyed this hotel. As a geography professor (and geography geek), I knew I had to stay at this hotel as it is named after the first European to glimpse the source of the Nile (from Lake Victoria). The name is important here as the hotel is located on the corner of Speke and Nile Streets. The room was very clean, although the bed was a bit small for me (I'm over 6 feet tall). The balcony though was outstanding and I strongly recommend that anyone staying here should get one if they can. They spray every evening for mosquitoes, but I also brought along a portable mosquito net, just in case. The two on site restaurants are both good (especially like the Indian one) and the breakfast was also tasty. The service was very good and the staff helped me get a car and driver to take me to Lake Victoria and to the Source of the Nile The hotel is a bit older, so do not expect it to be a Sheraton (which is across the street, so if that's more your thing, it's also central). Great location and hotel for the money!

Dissappointed in Inaccurate Description

Before being too harsh, I will state that first - this is Uganda and I am from the United States. It's probably unrealistic to expect the same level of standards for hotels. And overall, the Speke was clean, service was generally good with a few hiccups and the location is great. The restaurants are good and I wouldn't advise anyone NOT to stay here... it's just that the description didn't match the reality. The hotel is listed as a 4 star, but in the US - it would be a 2.5 or 3. The room is listed as over 2000 sq ft - but in actuality, I would guess about 300 - 400 sq ft. A pretty big hotel room, but not what is listed. Listing said Balcony with Garden view and Fireplace. No balcony in room, I didn't see a garden anywhere and there was no fireplace in room. Also, no minibar (as listed), the gym is not on site, and no iron/ironing board in room (however, they did supply one). Furthermore, the chain lock on my room was broken (not making me feel secure) and there as no lock or even latch on the bathroom door. Also, the towels were frayed, the shower curtain appeared to be cut by scissors to length, their were other small things (paint splatters, other cosmetics) that you just wouldn't expect from a 4 star. Just disappointed that the listing didn't match the reality. Also, getting a second key (my daughter and I shared a room) was denied once and then a hassle the next morning. With that said, the staff was polite, it was clean and comfortable and location is good

The building is 100 years old which means it has nice wood work. The bathrooms are modern, the bed feels good, flat screen TV, good customer service, excellent buffet breakfast, Central location. I got the cheap room it was 85 per night.. walls are thin, you can here's other ppl dishing the toilet, you can hear about every word they say in the hall way, so the nose level is hghi and a little hard to sleep. If you can hear them then they can hear you.. parking lot is small, hard to maneuver

Speke has a great location - initially was booked in an apartment, which I did not like, was moved to a much smaller single bed, which was more to my liking. Unfortunately the management indicated the smaller room (1/2 the size of the apartment!) was pricier, so no possibility of a refund!
This left a bad taste in the mouth, especially given I had to add to the cost paid upfront on Expedia

My room was really noisy, as there was music playing outside. Windows have this open grill at the top which allows all the noise from the street into the room. The hotel should warn guest of the noise for them to make a choice to stay on that side or not. The rest was fine, Like the staff were friendly, There was rain when I was about to check out, someone brought an umbrella to and helped me with the luggage.

Great staff, horrible location of outside rooms

The staff was outstanding in every way. The main hotel looks fine as well. My problem was the room I was sent to was not on the main grounds. I walked near the distance of a football field to get to an additional apartment building. This was unacceptable. not only a long walk, I had to walk down a long flight of stairs, poorly lit at night or early morning. One has to walk across a large parking lot rented to others during the day, the lot was so full it was difficult to move across the lot to my entrance way. The lot was dirty with men diligently washing cars. The bedroom was fine with air conditioning but the sitting room was not air conditioned and even with a fan was very uncomfortable. The apartment was next to a street that played extremely loud music until midnight. It was difficult trying to rest. I can say the only great thing was the outstanding staff who were great from check in until departure. This is a beautiful place but unfortunate they would send a guest to an out building. This should be noted on the Hotel.com site

I'm American and if your looking for an American hotel then choose somewhere else. For me this hotel was what I went to experience and gave me what I wanted. I wanted to experience African culture and not do anything American.... I wasn't in America and didn't go to another country to experience American culture..... I live that everyday. My apartment was nice and clean and yes the TV channels were not like I get here but I was not there to watch TV. City was wonderful and I was treated very well by everyone I meet and even had one of the security people at one place mess with me to get a laugh out of all of us. I would say if u want a nice place with the best staff I have ever meet anywhere then go there and see... Mercy the manager... Earrings the supervisor... Carol in the restaurant....jovia and artist.. And the man who shocked me... Innocent from the bar. Innocent first time I met him came up to me and said good morning Mr Brian can I help u... And that was in the restaurant not the bar. Not one single person acted anything other than I was like familymaybe I had the right attitude and was trying to fit into a different culture instead of them fitting into me. The overall security of the whole place... Hotel... City... And airport was top notch it would of been dealt with very quickly if anything was to have happened.thanks to everyone there and I will visit Uganda again.

Gracious service in the heart of Kampala.

We have stayed at the Speke many times and always have the same great experience. If you are a “westerner” looking for a “like-home” experience, this is not for you. But if you are looking for a gracious, service-oriented experience in the heart of the capital (with its natural hustle & bustle) we don’t think you will find a better spot. It is easily accessible, well known by all transportation services, has a lovely terrace for meeting guests or unwinding at the end of the day, and a delightful breakfast terrace. The very best part is the staff...especially Milly (Supervisor), Robert (Porter), and Gladys (Server). Be sure to try the African tea...they brew it the correct way with fresh ingredients!

The Speke is, they say, the oldest hotel in Kampala, right in the middle of town with a view of the Sheraton gardens and a lively scene on the front terrace. Three restaurants including an excellent Indian restaurant. Big trees and other greenery. Some of the upstairs rooms have balconies or large sitting areas. And a very nice staff.

not as good as the last time we stayed. They did not have half of the things on the menu. It was very noisey due to overlooking a busy road. It was always the place to get great ice cream there was none throughout our 4 night stay. They came up with various reasons which were not good. The staff were pleasant. However we were charged too much for some things in the restaurant had quite a time to get them to reduce the price also they were not going to give us the 10% on our evening meals until we showed that it was on our booking form. We did not get the free bottle of wine which was also on our booking form. However the cleaning staff were excellent.

if you don't mind staying up late you will be ok with this location - there is a night club next door and they claim that the music stops at 10:30 but more like 1:30. Between that and the construction in the next room all day it wasn't ideal.

I asked to be moved but the front desk said that the hotel was full.

This hotel used to have an excellent reputation in Kampala. It is a very comfortable colonial house splendidly located in central Kampala. Now under new management, little is left of the four stars. Room service is sluggish, if at all, the breakfast buffet is scarcely on the level of a youth hostel. There is no mosquito netting and the air conditioning smells badly of fungus. Contrary to the management, the porters and cleaning personnel we’re extremely friendly and helpful. All in all I would rate this hotel in a 2 star category with four star pricing

The hotel is built on colonial charm and still manages to retain this. However, the rooms need to be updated to modern standards. The TV only had about 4-5 channels. The furniture in the room looked like itnhad seen better days. Also, the mattress on the bed was very stiff. The bed made a lot of creaking noises as well. Yhe safe in the room wasnt working and be sure to lock the room when you leave bcoz they just open up if you dont.

Speke Hotel in downtown Kampala

The Speke is an acquired taste. The staff is out of this world. Very helpful, very polite, ready to do whatever is needed. The hotel is historic, but worn. The typical European/USA traveler will feel that the hotel room is not up to the typical business standard, but looks can be very deceiving. The Speke is clean, the food is very good (several varied restaurants), and the hotel has an unbeatable location if you are doing business in the downtown. I have stayed there 3 times, and my business partner (after initially not liking the hotel) has stayed there twice because the \"goods\" outway the \"not greats\" by a lot. The WiFi is variable. During my last stay, it was excellent. My partner on his last trip, however, found it to be inconsistent. The list of things I really like: location, service, food, taxi availablity, security, air conditioning. large room with extra sitting area and table. The things I put up with: taking a shower you can experience hot water \"surging\", shower could be cleaner, generally a spartan room, door does not shut out noise in the hall. I have had extended stays there, and the laundry service is very fast and very reasonable. I feel that this is the best value in Kampala and I will keep staying at the Speke.

Noticeable improvements in a number of areas.

I have been going to the Speke Hotel since 1984. I went early last year and again last week. I noticed a number of improvements from 1 year ago in the quality of the food, the overall service and the reliabilty of the wifi. The only issue that makes me not stay here on every trip is a no gym or pool. If they could at elast turn a couple of rooms in to a gym more business men would come as busy people like to use the gym before or after their working day of meetings. Aside from that improvements have been made so good work.

The hotel is poorly decorated, in dull cream wall paint and the rooms are too squeezed, with very little space around the large bed to sit at a desk and there is no extra space. The lobby is gloomy and has an abandoned feeling. The traffic passing by is quite noisy and the deep loggia balconies restrict light into the room. The hotel restaurant is first class and the food is about the best I've had in Uganda. The staff are extremely well-trained and helpful.

Speke hotel improvement

The hotel does not provide lotion and bathing towel. The door lock was spoilt. The toilet was smelling.
Went to ask for coffee they told me that the machine is switched off so there is no coffee.
The staff is not customer driven

The location of hotel is good and within the city but very poorly maintained. Staff has not given any training of hospitality.
I think it will not be fair to name it a hotel but a lodge that too not maintained well.
All the restaurants including Indian serves food not palatable at all, looks like not fresh.
For transport they charge the international rates but the car they provide for pick ups and drop to airport are too old and dust laden. Over all very disappointing experience.

Good businessman's hotel for meetings in Kampala

Excellent staff, good restaurants with an especially good Indian restaurant with a really nice outdoor seating area. Internet WiFi was much better than the high end hotel I had just left in Johannesburg, SA. Was able to print out boarding passes as there is an available computer/printer in the lobby. I stayed 5 nights and felt very comfortable the entire time. There is visible and excellent security. The \"special\" taxi rank is right out front. Standard Chartered bank ATM is 100 yards away. If you invest in a burner phone, you can buy minutes in the main lobby for Airtel and MTN (at least those 2, I think there were more). The breakfast is quite a bit above average. A few things that were unusual and I did not like. When I got to my room, the water was turned off. The concierge turned it on after checking it, but when I first used it, the water ran almost black for about 5 seconds. It cleared up, and I showered every day with no ill effects. The hotel supplies bottled water every day. Every night, the staff uses bug spray in the room One has to decamp for about an hour to let the smell clear. Overall, I would happily stay here again. It met my needs for proximity to the government ministries and agencies with whom I had meetings. Cannot say enough how friendly and helpful the staff is.

One of the worst hotel!!!

This hotel in Kampala is very old and rooms look tired. Bathrooms are old and in need of refurb. Rooms are quite dirty and bedding is not premium as stated in the hotel description. It does not deserve 4 star status. I would rate it 2 stars. Never stay here again.

One month at the Speke

Very comfortable and great value for money - much better than the neighbouring Sheraton, which is not really showing its age and the quality of the two are not very different. Staff helpful and went out of their way to be of assistance.

Great business hotel

Check in process is refreshingly speedy; I was in my room under 5 min. The internet is quite good for business purposes. At some point it was lethargic and the manager personally brought me a router/modem for my room. Staff is also friendly. it's location in town makes it a huge convenience. Will be back

Nice hotel, three decent restaurants in town

The hotel is overall a good experience - the staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the facilities are quite good. The rooms are a bit old, but clean and the bathrooms are first class. There are three restaurants within the hotel which is good for variety - the Indian restaurant is particularly good. The only problem with my stay was that the management was entirely inflexible about check-out times, even though I had come down with an illness. They tried to make me pay a half day rate for staying 2 hours later, which I found a sign of their willingness to ask guests to pay for every extra convenience. Other than this, it was a great stay!

Good location, unhelpful staff

The front desk employees were very unhelpful. They could not find the paperwork that I paid in advance, I asked for a hair dryer-never brought it and gave me only two towels-no soap.

Beds were very uncomfortable. My room was tiny, with poor lighting ans a burnt out TV.
