If you’re looking to experience a traditional Japanese stay, with a Ryokan feel this place has it. Amazing service and amenities, including the Yakutas in the room that I regret not buying. Clean and beautiful. The public onsen was lovely and quiet, there is also an option to book a private onsen slot for no extra fee. The island is amazing and the oysters (however you like them) are a must-try.

The rooms were spacious and clean, and we enjoyed the view on the small sun porch. But by far the most amazing aspect of our visit was the dining option. We signed up for the breakfast and dinner, and they were five star restaurant worthy. An incredible delightful assortment of delicious dishes at every meal. Don’t miss it!

The place is very charming. The location is great for walking to town or going to other . The rooms are spacious. Most decor and furniture seems very dated. so for the price, we thought it was a little high. The Japanese style breakfast was delicious. We are also glad they offered coffee at the breakfast.

The staff seem nice but basic expectations were not met. Did not pick-up us ubtik 30 minutes after we arrived although i informed many times. I had to contact expedia to get them to respond. Food and services at hotel were average and slightly below for Japan. The staff was quick to clean up while eating. They seem nervious and wanting people to leave. Limited support on how to prepare and put foos together. I am so disappointed by the experience. It was not worth all we paid

The hotel is a traditional japanesse ryokan. Smell bad and the bathroom was dirty. The elevator and the public areas smell bad like humidity. The hotel needs a reimbursement. I don't recommend.

The Miyajima Hotel Makato was an absolutely excellent experience. Their customer service was the best I have ever seen in my life! They were very helpful with every need and request. I absolutely would stay here again! The only thing I would change was the type of room. Make sure you want to stay in a traditional room if that is what you want. It is what we requested and was so cool. Next time I would stay in a modern room. They were excellent!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Miyajima Hotel Makoto. The traditional rooms are large and well-appointed, however some decor and components are obvoously outdated. There is also a distinctly earthy/broccoli-like smell throughout the hotel, which may bother some people. The front desk staff were friendly and welcoming, and helped us with dinner reservations. Overall, we would say this hotel is above-average compared to most of our stays in Japan.

A little bit away from the shops and other hotels and nested amongst the residential area is this gem of a ryokan. Got the authentic experience of sleeping on Japanese futons and bathing in the public bath. The rooms also had modern. Bathrooms and showers. Fully recommend paying for the attached kaiseki dinner and breakfast, both were amazing experiences. Our favorite was the breakfast miso soup! Can't recommend highly enough!

This place was amazing! We arrived early to the hotel as we had taken the ferry over early in the morning. They were able to store our bags for the day and placed them in our rooms when the room was ready. Someone was at the door of the hotel ready to greet you as you came in. The room was very spacious and had everything we needed in it. We unfortunately did not get to take advantage of the onsen, because we were exhausted after walking so much. The view from our room was amazing, looking out over the roof of the hotel and down on cherry trees, where both birds and deer gathered. At about six pm we had a knock on the door and two gentlemen came and made up our Japanese style beds for us. The only bad thing for us was that we only booked one night here. We would have stayed on the island much longer at at this hotel longer if we had the time.

Made good use of public and private Onsen (hot baths) and fantastic Japanese food beautifully presented at both breakfast and dinner. This hotel is grossly over priced for what it is offering. The public rooms are non existent, despite claims. The dining room is large and soulless, with mediocre service. Lighting in the bedroom is poor.
There must be better value places to stay on Makoto island.

This is a lovely quiet hotel/ryokan. Beautiful large room with everything set up for onsen the Japanese bath, which was also delightful.
The staff was very very sweet and helpful.

We didn’t eat at the hotel; there are wonderful restaurants within walking distance.

The hotel is a few hundred meters from the tourist area which is very quiet after 5 pm.

We enjoyed our stay at Miyajima Hotel Makato very much.
Upon arrival, we were surprised to learn all shops generally close by 5pm.
Your front desk staff quickly helped to organize breakfast for us the next morning though it was very last minute.
We appreciated that very much.
They even provide transportation to the ferry terminal.
The whole team is always very attentive and ensure we are very looked after, our compliments to them for a job well done !!!

The service of the hotel is perfect, we contact for transfer service on previous day. The staff has waited at the pier on time and left the maps and restaurant information for us, we can continue to enjoy our day in Miyajima directly. There is a girl at reception is able to speak in fluent English, which is very friendly to the foreigners who don’t know Japanese. Just a bit disappointed because the private bath is fully booked on the day and we cannot have it. Miyajima is a very good place and we love it so much. Next time when I come here, I will book this hotel agin and the private bath.

Situado en la parte alta de la ciudad, en una zona bonita y tranquila a solo diez minutos andando del shrine. El servicio es excelente. La habitación amplia y con bonitas vistas. Los futones confortables. Habitación con frigorífico y servicio de té. Nos dejaron unas galletas y el agua del grifo es potable. También ofrece yukatas y zapatillas. El onsen público está muy bien. El baño y el wc están separados por lo que es cómodo. Hay una pequeña tienda con souvenirs y bebidas. El personal muy amable, nos ofreció un mapa con los restaurantes que cerraban tarde. Repetiría en este hotel sin dudarlo!

We had a large room with Tatami mats for sleeping. Unless you are used to them, they are not very comfortable. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant and we had some difficulty finding a place to have dinner lon the (Sunday) evening we were there. Likewise for breakfast the morning after.

This hotel is on top of a hill and about a 10min walk from the ferry station.
The property is a bit dated and we think way overpriced for what you get. The tatami room we got was spacious but the mats we got to sleep on were awful. It was just as well to sleep on the tatami floor, no one could get comfortable here.
There was also an annoying speaker announcement every morning, not sure what that was about but we heard it clearly in our room and it woke us up.
There is a small gift shop with snacks but not a big selection.
The Onsen is clean and nice, it was the best part of our stay but we would probably stay elsewhere if we came back to the island.
The island is beautiful but be prepared because businesses open late (around 10:30) and close early (around 5pm) so the eating options are very limited. The hotel has an option to include food but we didn’t get it so I can’t say if that’s any good.

We spent $600 per night (5 people) and feel it was not worth it.

Excellent stay! The staff was welcoming and charming. Our room (501) had views from two sides and we could watch a beautiful sunset. The shower had great water pressure.

Meals were served in a cavernous dining hall (it felt a little like summer camp, you are with your own group) but the food was superb!

Very nice bath. We managed to hit at a quiet time, but one night we decided to go for a walk first and noticed a large number of people heading to the bath, so you may have a different experience.

Staying overnight (we stayed two) in Miyajima is far superior to day-tripping it, and Motoko is a great place to stay

Comfortable extended stay on Miyajima

We stayed on Miyajima for a pleasant six days. My wife and I had visited Miyajima for a day many years ago, but we had never been with our children. We imagined a holiday on Miyajima would be a relaxed but exploratory one.

Hotel Makoto is an elegant Japanese resort-style hotel. I took advantage of the sauna in the family bathing space, which can be reserved free-of-charge at the front desk, a space that also features a bath that could fit two adults and two small children together comfortably. Our tatami room was spacious and featured a view of the mountains, the bay, and the five-storied pagoda.

Service at the hotel is exceptional. Staff made every effort to assist in a pleasurable stay. This applies not only reception staff but also to servers at breakfast, who made the effort to provide simple alternatives for our fussy-eater children, and to chauffeur service to and from port.

Perhaps the hotel is not the glossiest option one might find on the island. I happen to like hotels where the history of the place is palpable, so the cosmetic flaws in an otherwise well-maintained lodging hardly bothered me. Since we will certainly be visiting again one day, I hope that the owners give a corner or two a new paint job and consider some new carpet to renew this charming accommodation to its obviously once-opulent state.

A wonderful, memorable stay with sprawling breakfasts, the smell of well-preserved tatami mats, capacious views of Miyajima, and old-fashioned luxury.

Staff was very friendly. Pick-up and drop-off from and to ferry station was great! Japanese style room was clean an very spacious. Public bath was also huge and enjoyable. No restaurant at hotel, not sure why they advertise food in their website. Walking distance to shops and restaurants, but everything opens around 9 am or later and closes around 5:30 to 6 pm, so a bit stressful to plan your days and meal times.

Affordable ryokan on the island of the gods.

I live in Hiroshima City but we wanted to stay on Miyajima during Kangensai. We chose this place because it still has the authentic ryokan style, but is very affordable (especially being on Miyajima) without sacrificing any beauty, comfort, or service. It’s a short walking distance from the port and a very short walk to the beautiful shrines and temples of the island. The rooms are beautiful and have a lovely bathroom for everyone’s needs. After finding this place, we will stay here more often instead of returning home after a long day on the island!

Miyajima island is a wonderful spot to spend two or three days. Crowded and touristy between 9 and 3 for sure - but outside of those times, quite special. The sika deer are a novelty but where we come from, they are edible rather than cute so was constantly left wondering if someone would miss one. The hotel is nice with good room size and traditional tatami and futon sleeping arrangements. Especially liked the traditional bathhouse. One thing to be aware is that the advertised restaurant does not exist. The staff were quite bemused when I showed them the Expedia advertising of said facility. Not just is there no seafood specialty as described - there is no restaurant at all. That would be fine but be aware that most establishments in the village close shortly after people head back to the mainland on the last (3pm ish) ferry. Still, a few places stay open and offer good food. Les Clos is a class above. Bambino is also good and do a proper but slightly expensive marguerita. Miyajima Brewery was also good. Most other places are fine with the usual fare and many do local oysters. Their treatment of them (steamed, pickled etc) is a travesty for those of us who like our seafood raw and fresh. Have fun.

Beautiful, be flexible as you sleep on the ground

From a Western perspective futon mattresses on the floor aren't comfortable. I realize that this is normal for the Japanese, but it was hard for me to adjust to. And unless you want a truly different breakfast experience I don't recommend the extra for the included breakfast. Just a heads up!
That being said, the service was amazing. They will meet you at the ferry dock and drive you up the hill to the hotel. The views out of our room were amazing. It was such a treat to be on the island in the evening after all of the day trippers had left. If I had to do it all over again I would still stay at this hotel. It was an experience that I won't forget.

Nice traditional Ryokan close to everything

This traditiinal Japanese hotel was one of the highlights of our Japan family holuday. It has its own onsen and futons are rolled out on Tatami each evening to sleep. Rooms are spacious for a Ryokan. Staff are lovely, making every little thing easy and no trouble. All in all a fabulous immersive Japanese experience. Wonderful!

Miyajima Hotel Makoto was spectacular! From station pick-up to the amazing room to the delicious food. This was just an all round fantastic experience. I would definitely stay again. This is a mid range ryokan with a private and public onsen for guests. It was very comfortable and a close walk to the Torii Gate. Staff were very helpful. I would recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed in one of the rooms that could accommodate up to six people. The room was incredibly large (though six adults would be a stretch) and spacious. The staff came in both evenings to set up our futons and set us up with hot water for tea. The hotel and our room were super clean, even if the overall decor was a bit out of date. The spa was included in the price and very relaxing. Yukatas were provided of various sizes in the room. Overall a perfect and reasonably priced ryokan experience.

My husband and I had a wonderful two-time stay. The hotel staff was very attentive and took care of setting up our futons both nights. They also set up the hot water pot for in-room tea. The hotel is definitely not the most modern ryokan, but it is very clean and tidy. We loved it.

The hotel is a convenient 7 minute walk from the ferry. The staff is very friendly and kind. They let us leave our bags before check in so we could explore the island. The room is spacious and beautiful. While we were at dinner, they even set up our beds for us! They provided comfortable yukatas we could were around the hotel or out and about in Miyajima. The public baths were lovely and open from 6 am- midnight. The only thing they don’t tell you is that you need to have your hotel make reservations for a restaurant for you for dinner. We would consider ourselves lucky to get to visit and stay here again!! It was wonderful!

The Makoto Hotel is a lovely and well-maintained hotel. The service and hospitality were superb. Although we paid extra for the breakfast, the presentation and food were amazing! The only drawback might be that it is probably the accommodation that is situated the furthest away from the sights. But the hotel offers a shuttle service to/from the ferry which the grandparents greatly appreciated. The rest of the family thoroughly enjoyed walking through the local neighborhoods, seeing more of Miyajima than most.

Nice Traditional Ryokan Close to Local Shrines

I really enjoyed my stay at Miyajima Hotel Makoto. The staff were friendly and helpful, and were able to speak enough english that communicating wasn't difficult. The room was spacious and clean and definately created the tradition japanese experience. The AC worked great with no issues; They give you a guide on how to change its settings too. Seating in the room on tatami floor chairs which is neet, but can hurt your legs after awhile if you're not used to sitting cross-legged. The bathroom had two sinks in a washing area, a bathtub and shower room, and a toilet room, which makes it great for larger groups. The free wifi was nice and fast, I was able to stream videos from youtube with no interruptions. The public bath was clean and had a relaxing atmosphere. You can access it most of the morning and evening which is nice if you leave/return to the hotel at odd hours. The hotel breakfast requires you to pay in advance but it was well worth it. It was a japanse style breakfast which was different each of the two days i went. It was served with grilled fish, tofu salad, bacon and egg along with a good variety of japanese side dishes. If your not comfortable eating certain japanese dishes, you may want to consider getting food in town nearby. The futon bedding at night was clean and comfortable. However, the futon feels a little hard since its directly on the floor so if you have back, hip, or other joint problems, it may be uncomfortable to sleep in them.

Traditional ryokan. Felt a bit like camping - sleeping on the floor. But if you want to sleep on the island, this place is a good choice.

Poor view from room, but rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable. Would've liked to try their private bath but it was booked full. A bit further from the attractions, but it's still a very short walk.

Very nice ryokan with an amazing onsen!

Love the onsen in this Ryokan. Love the traditional futons and tatami mats.

Love the staff as they are super friendly and super helpful! They even shuttle bus guests to and from the main station.

The staff were so helpful with organising and filling in our luggage delivery paperwork and even provided our next hotel with courtesy call to advise the luggage would be arriving.

LOVE IT!

Japanese-Style Comfort

Loved the Japanese style rooms, and ours had a view of the five-story pagoda and great torii. Comfortable beds on tatami floors, which were set up for us by the staff. We slept great! The Japanese breakfast was delicious and HUGE! Excellent service and very nice staff. We would definitely stay here again!

Quiet, comfortable, and roomy

My family (2 adults, 2 kids ages 8, 11) spent one night at the Makoto and had a pleasant experience. The staff was helpful and more than willing to answer any questions. The hotel is about 5-8 minutes walk from the ferry (uphill) but it was not a problem. The hotel also offered a van service if needed. The facilities were a little on the older side but comfortable. The room included all the amenities one would need for the stay. Great experience in a Japanese style hotel and would definitely return again.

Room was clean although it didn't \"sparkle\" due to the older or traditional decor. The \"damp\" smell that some other reviewers have mentioned is due to the mats and isn't due to rising damp or some other problem like that. The mats always smell like that. Staff were friendly but as other reviewers have mentioned the decor is a bit dated. Overall positive experience, didn't try the food as it was too expensive on top of the room rate. Had a great meal at a local restaurant recommended by the front of house staff.

Relaxation

Hotel Makoto delivered above and beyond expectations of a simple ryokan. The reception were fully fluent in English and happy to assist with any requests we had. While close to the station the hotel is also near to hiking and shopping areas. After hours of hiking followed by going to the bathhouse(open til midnight) and then lying flat on tatami mats while eating ice-cream makes a full and satisfying day.

Amazing roukan style!

Amazing stay. Even though it's called a hotel it's practically a roukan. Which is great! Tatami room. Unexpected free shuttle from train station. Hostess greeted us and showed us to our room. Even explained everything, made us tea, told us about attractions and everything. Extremely cute and welcoming. They turn over room while u have dinner so the futon beds were made. Very roukan like. Onsen was all indoor but amazing. Wifi was strong in room. Bfast was traditional Japanese set, not buffet. Enjoyed it a lot. Noise was fairly minimal. Front desk has awesome dinner recommendations as the town is about 80% shut down after 6:30-7pm. Highly recommend this place!

good but old fashioned...wifi bad

a good hotel that is close to the ferry. Rooms are big. Wifi only works in reception. Breakfast was only Japanese but very nice.
