Iwaso is nestled in a beautiful location at the bas of Mt. Misen and the building itself and the surrounds are very quiet and peaceful. Full credit goes to all the staff at Iwaso, they make you feel very welcome from the moment you enter until you check out and provide very attentive service, without making you feel simply like 'another customer'. Dinner and breakfast were both very good, with the kaiseki dinner having an interesting menu of local seafood. The room was comfortable and well maintained with a good selection of amenities. Overall I highly reccomend Iwaso for anyone staying at Miyajima and will stay here again if I return.

absolutely loved my stay, from the moment we arrived, the staff were warm, welcoming, and incredibly attentive. The location is perfect — tucked into the trees near Momijidani Park, with a peaceful stream running right outside.
Everything about Iwaso felt authentic and special. If you want a true taste of traditional Japanese hospitality, this is the place to stay.

A gorgeous property, top notch and caring service, wonderful food and a beautiful onsen. This is a spectacular place for a stay on Miyajima. We arrived early and our bags were quickly stored. Check in was smooth. The room was large and had a beautiful view of the foliage on the mountainside and sound of the nearby creek. It was so quiet and peaceful! We had included dinner which was delicious as was breakfast. The onsen is magical. Everything about Iwaso was fantastic. Stay here for a traditional ryokan experience. Highly recommended!!

Worth an overnight stay on Miyajima

Lovely stay - as a first time visitor to Japan, it was great to have a night at some more traditional lodging. Iwaso was beautiful and the service excellent. The fixtures in the private bathroom in my room were somewhat dated but everything was very clean, and I really used the Onsen anyway - also, the historic/classic styling of the property was what I wanted. I didn’t find the futons particularly comfortable, but am used to western beds. But what I really felt like I was paying for here was location - a short walk to town, beautifully set right along the river. Could hear the stream from my room (which looked out into the trees, I was in the newer/larger building) and loved using the outdoor Onsen next to the water. And, the best part was being up late/early after the hordes of day trippers had left - very peaceful. It also made it easier to get to the ropeway right at opening and avoid the lines (property is along the path up to Mt Misen.) The more expensive lodging options looked beautiful and probably worth the splurge - just outside my budget.

This is a very expensive ryokan in my opinion, but you're paying to be able to stay in Miyajima after all the tourists leave, so it's worth it. You can get a very nice kaiseki dinner, which if you like Japanese food, you'll like. It's heavy on the fish and shellfish, not surprising since it's an island, so if you have an issue with that, you need to tell them when you make the reservation or at least before you arrive. The room was a basic Japanese room. Really well appointed. My only problem was that it sounded like they were doing laundry in the room below me all night, but then in the morning, I thought maybe it was the plumbing? Who knows. It's centrally located to the shrine, so I got up at 7 and had the place almost to myself - which is the reason why you do this.

Premier Destination on Miyajima

Iwaso is a tremendous experience, absolutely recommended in my book. The hotel staff were very helpful and attentive, making sure I knew everything I needed to to make the most of my time staying there.

I stayed at Iwaso for one night as a part of a larger trip traveling around Japan, and the room I had here was far and away the most spacious and luxurious of any I stayed in during the trip.

Iwaso is a short walk away from many of the main attractions on Miyajima (really short, we're talking sub-10-minutes).

However, Iwaso also has a bus that can pick you up from the ferry terminal, which is a big help if you have any heavy bags. (I didn't, but could see how useful that would be.)

The balcony in my room overlooked a remarkably calm forested area, with the sounds of wildlife as company while I sat and read. The balcony was enclosed, to prevent mosquitos and other bugs from disrupting your experience.

The room also included instructions for the yukata (traditional pyjamas) and for using the hotel's onsen, both of which were very helpful for a foreigner like me who wasn't already accustomed to them!

I didn't book dinner with my room, but the front desk staff were able to provide me with a map of the island with some dinner recommendations. And the traditional breakfast was a real treat, wholeheartedly recommended to get a taste for some new Japanese foods.

An amazing experience. One of the highlights of our entire trip to Japan. Miyajima itself is extremely touristy and crowded, but still worth it for the views, shrines, temples, street food and the pesky deer. This hotel is a haven of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle yet only a very short walk from the action. The staff guide you patiently in etiquette for a Ryokan. Both the evening meal and breakfast are cultural and culinary experiences and the onsen baths were lovely. Sleeping on the futon and tatami mats was much more comfortable than I expected. It’s not cheap by any means, but I think it is well worth it for the overall experience.

The Iwaso is an outstanding, traditional, well preserved Japanese Ryokan with a long & old history, and was the highlight of our recent trip to Japan (family of 3, incl. 13 yo son and me who lived in Japan for more than 15 years).

If you seek to experience real/ ‘old’ Japanese customs, e.g.: sleep on the floor in a traditional Japanese guesthouse, tickle your tastebuds with Kaiseki (multiple course dinner menue) and relax within an Ofuro (common bath for hotel guests) in an outdoor setting, the Iwaso Ryokan on Miyajima will take you back to that very special time 100 years ago.
(To all novices to Japan, please (!) read through the guidance on Japanese customs the hotel is providing to really experience the traditions, show respect, and to have a most delightful ‘samurai-like’ time)

We will remember & cherish our stay at Iwaso forever.

PS: if you are uncertain how long to stay on Miyajima, I would recommend staying on the island a full day: there are many, many beautiful shrines and temples to visit, cute shopping streets that take you back in time, wonderful hiking possibilities with free roaming, wild deers, or a small beach for a quick dip (at least your legs) on a hot summer day.

Best part is you are steps from the shrine. Dinner was in a private room. Hotel is on top of a creek with waterfall. Onsen was perfect. It was the crown jewel of our vacation.

We loved Iwaso. Spent one night in the main building and two nights in the new building. The staff were very friendly and most welcoming (we do not speak any Japanese). Highlights include the onsen (very clean and relaxing), the central location (near the hiking trails/shops/restaurants/shrines), and the food both at Iwaso and in town. This is a special place with special staff!

This had been on my radar for years, having stopped in to check it out in the past. The entrance/lobby area is wonderful and the staff members are also wonderful - I guess that is what sold me on it. I finally had a chance to stay there, so made the reservation. I have been in many high end and low end ryokans. In low end things are tattered and food isn't memorable or even very good, but they charge $75-150 per person per night, so I don't expect more. High end ($250-500 per person/night) generally are much nicer with better rooms (with new, nice smelling tatami), nicer baths, and superior food. The price here was about $500-600 before extras for a night for 2 people and I expected much better food. It wasn't bad, but just wasn't special. The room was somewhat tattered and small. The tatami mats must have been old, since there was no nice smell. We had just come from a different ryokan that cost the same and had nicer facilities, a room twice the size and incredible food, so I expected more here. It is older (I think they said 150 years old), but that should be no excuse. The service was very nice and the staff was caring and friendly. I really enjoyed all of the staff members with whom I had any contact. I just expected a nicer room and better food for the price.

The staff was really dedicated and welcoming. Food was great. It gives us the opportunity to experience a ryokan to the fullest. The woman taking care of us was so caring with our kids and she did her best to speak English and make herself understood. The surroundings are beautiful and the sound of the river in our room made the stay quite relaxing. However, for the cost, we felt that the property could be updated. Carpets were run down and bathroom facilities out of date. We would have expected a top notch properly for the price we paid.

Iwaso is hands down the best hotel experience that my wife and I have ever had.

The service from the time you step into the Ryokan is top notch, as is the food. Both the dinner and the breakfast provided were of superior quality.

The onsen at the inn was also a wonderful experience, especially the outdoor one.

Iwaso was everything I had hoped it would be. A wonderful experience in a traditional Japanese inn. Everything is peaceful and relaxed. A perfect spot to stay to escape the world. It’s also perfect if you’re keen to explore Miyajima, as it’s right on the main hiking path and only a short stroll to the Itsukushima shrine. Highly highly recommend it!

Amazing location surrounded by tranquility. Waterfall, endless rows of trees, and mountains adjacent to the property. Customer Service here was truly phenomenal. Dinner was served in our room and our room attendant did a fantastic job. The windows in the room slides all the way providing a beautiful view of the mountains. Will definitely stay here again!

The service at this ryokan is fantastic as is the location (a few minutes from the famous tori gates). However, the kaiseki meal (while traditonal) May be hard for American palates to appreciate. Consider packing snacks in case you are left hungry - as we were. Breakfast on the other hand is fantastic. Also note the onsen is sexy segregated but fully nude (no bathing suits allowed).

Iwaso Ryokan

We spent a night at Iwaso earlier this month (September 2018).

It is a lovely ryokan. I was particularly impressed by the staff, who were so hospitable and went out of their way to make sure that we had an excellent time.

The onsen are fantastic - in particular, spending time in the outside one at night is a very pleasant experience.

We very much enjoyed the kaiseki meal - some of it very much new to us, but delicious and an awful lot of effort had clearly gone into it. Quality of the ingredients was noticeably high. They also were kind in taking into account dietary issues (eg my wife’s allergy to shellfish). My only issue with it was that shark fin soup was served as a substitute course - we were a little surprised at that but perhaps shouldn’t have been.

As other reviewers have noted, some of the building looks like a modern hotel (a very nice one). The entrance hall and rooms were both very charming.

We did not have a good view from our room - it looked onto a concrete balcony with a raIling - but I expect many other rooms will have beautiful views out over the forest.

We were very glad we stayed here.

Exactly what we wanted from a ryokan stay

An incredible ryokan experience! From the moment you walk into the lobby to the moment you leave, the staff are 100% committed to making sure you enjoy your stay.

The food was excellent and each turn of the traditional kaiseki meal was described in detail. It might not suit all tastes, but you always know what you are getting into it.

The rooms are gorgeous, with lovely views of Miyajima. Iwaso is perfectly located so that you can make the most of your stay there. It's a short walk from the torii gate, from the picturesque shrine, and just steps from the path that leads to the roapway up Mt. Misen.

Don't forget about the onsen! You can soak with views of the island's natural setting.

If we ever make it back to Miyajima, I wouldn't hesitate to visit Iwaso again!

A disappointing experience.

Our 2-day stay was supposed to be the highlight of our 3-week tour of Japan, but an earlier stay in a (much cheaper) lovely, warm, welcoming ryokan, with top-class food, had set the bar high.
The island is pleasant, but we arrived just as the weather was turning for the worse, also the cable-car was closed, so once we had seen the (lovely) sites, there was not much else to do except visit the aquarium.
The hotel is ok, but dated. Our room may not have been one of the best, although for money it should have been! We only had 2 chairs for the 3 of us, and the bathroom was straight out of the 1970s.
We slept in one room and ate in another, the other side of the corridor, which felt odd and a bit pretentious.
The part of the hotel that we stayed in felt dated, a bit like walking down the corridors in a motel.
The hotel is situated on quite a main route, not in private gardens, which is what you would think from the website.
Dinner look amazing but the quality was not a patch on what we had had elsewhere. There was a lot of cold food, which was not to our taste. It was served by a shy, attentive waitress - our ‘room maid’.
The onsen in the basement was the best part, large, new, beautifully kitted out with everything you might need. A real treat.
As in the rest of Japan, the staff were extremely polite and helpful, but it did not appear to be authentic. It felt like an 'act for the tourists'.

Beautiful traditional ryokan

Iwaki occupies a beautiful spot close to the famous tori gate. The staff spoke excellent English and were very welcoming. The evening meal was delicious and served in a private room in the restaurant and the onsen was lovely with an out door bath. We stayed for one night and our family of four shared a traditional room sleeping on futons which was very comfortable. I would highly recommend Iwaso and would stay again.

This may be a bit unfair but this property is well located, staff and service is great. Room is weeny teeny small. No closet. Live off suitcase that is placed along passage way in room. Yes it forced us to have some discipline but that's not what living in a hotel room used to be. Bath and wc area is surprising large. I think it occupies about 30% of the entire room. Yes to have a hot bath onsen style is great. But the long bath is not useful as by the time it is filled, the water temperature has gone down. I thought a better idea would be to retain the bath side WITHOUT the long bath which would free up space for a closet and better use of space.

The perfect ryokan to live the magic ofnMiyajima

We stayed in Iwaso as part or our honeymoon travel in Japan and it was by far the best accommodation in the 21 days we travelled around the country. The room was perfect and big, the service incredible, the futon super confortable and the onsen amaizing. The dinner was also one of the best meals we had in the trip. I really recommend it, it was the perfect place to stay in Miyajima.

Excellent location if you want to visit the Great Toril, just 10 mins walk from the ferry station.

Great high end ryokan experience

The service is impeccable, the room is very comfortable, complete with a small sitting room facing the hills. We got a 4th floor room that can see a bit of the great torii, but the trees obscures much of it. Our hostess speaks excellent English, and was very thorough in taking care of us. She served the dinner in our room, set up our futon, and gave us all the instructions on how to use the onsen. It was great Japanese hospitality.

The dinner was a 7 course Kaiseki. The food was good and looks great, but not outstanding compared to, say, Kikunoi, where we had dinner a few night afterwards.

The location of the ryokan is very close to all the attractions. It is about 5min walk from the Itsukushima Shrine. The ropeway station up Mount Misen is about 10min walk.

Amazing experience, we cannot recommend it enough. The hotel is beautiful, cosy and offers a unique ryokan experience. The onsen (bath) area is great too and we had the full dinner experience in the room which was memorable. It is absolutely worth the trip to Miyajima, one of the best memories from our two weeks in Japan.

A Wonderful Experience

My wife and I spent two night wonderful nights at Iwaso. For an authentic Japanese experience this is the place. Sleep on the floor (yes it's comfortable), dress in traditional style for private Japanese dinner, excellent breakfast, outstanding service, great location for walking and seeing the sights, transportation to and from the dock. Overall a truly wonderful time. Do not miss!!!

Experience Authentic \"Onsen Ryokan\" in Miyajima

This is a historical upper-class ryokan that the current Emperor of Japan has stayed, albeit in a special cottage, while he was a young crowned prince. It's located close by to Itsukushima Shrine, yet hidden in a quaint passage. Our room was located at the top floor of the 5-story building and was facing a great view of the Torii, the sea, the near-by Buddhist temple's pagoda, and the mountain hills. It is the only ryokan with natural hot spring on this side of Miya-jima, so you can get two birds with one stone; experience of a very authentic Japanese onsen and a visit to a World Heritage site.
Our stay included half-board, with teas/coffees with Japanese sweets in our room upon our arrival, many toiletry amenities--including hair brush, toothbrush with toothpaste, razor, yukata-bathrobe while you stay, a pair of socks perfumed and dyed with cloves, a cloth handy-sack for taking your toiletry to baths, etc. Found in the bath areas are shampoo, conditioner, body soap, Q-tips, facial wash, facial toner/lotion bottles.
Our room is with shoji window screens in a traditional Japanese tatami mats, and we slept in futon that the ryokan ladies laid out for us after dinner.
They provide gender-separated onsen-baths, and switches bathing area by time. Rotenburo (outdoor bath) is especially memorable for its view and sound of running creeks and tree-covered adjacent bank. FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH JAPANESE ONSEN, PLEASE RESEARCH AHEAD & FOLLOW THEIR BATHING INSTRUCTIONS!

Wonderful ryokan in a beautiful setting

Wonderful stay. When we arrived on the ferry there was a shuttle bus waiting to drive us up the mountain road. The ryokan is in a beautiful, peaceful wooded setting. The walk to the floating torii is a pleasant, easy 5 minute walk. The staff from arrival to departure was wonderful and we enjoyed the small tea ceremony in our room when it was ready. We did not eat dinner at the hotel since we do not eat seafood. Most restaurants close early on the island so if you skip the dinner offering, be sure to bring something (we had bento boxes) or eat early. We did eat the western breakfast and enjoyed the offering and variety, the fruit and orange juice were wonderful.

We enjoyed the tatami room. I found the tatami mats very hard to sleep on but my daughter was comfortable. Nice shower room facilities and toiletries in the room. We would definitely stay here again.

Great location - at foot of Mt. Misen so you can beat the day trippers to the cable car and mountain walks in the morning.

Really lovely retreat - staff couldn't do enough for you and it was a pleasant Japanese experience. Food was also excellent.

There is nothing to do after 7 pm.
everything closed.
Hotel staff is good, but the hotel conditions are unacceptable.

It's my second time at Iwaso. The service is great. the dinner is very original. The hotel has the charm of an old traditional ryokan.

The hotel is perfectly placed between itsukushima shrine and the mountain hiking trails / ropeway station. It's a real pleasure to go walking near the shrine dressed in yukata after the dinner and before relaxing in the onsen.

Good relaxed ryokan experience on Miyajima

Excellent service and food quality. Iwaso was more relaxed compared to the ryokan we stayed in Kyoto and the staff speak good English. The onsen in the hotel was good also. Staying on Miyajima and seeing the Otori at night after all the day trippers are gone is an experience worth having.

Great location very close to the famous Torii. Very fun seeing the Torii at night while dressed in the hotel provided yukatas. Food was very good, and they offer both western and japanese breakfasts. Onsen in the basement was great way to relax after a day of touring.

Wonderful place for a tradtional Japanese stay

Our stay at Iwaso was wonderful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The dinner and breakfast included were fantastic. We wanted the experience of staying in a traditional inn and this did not disappoint. The area surrounding the hotel was beautiful. The baths were also amazing. We only stayed one night, but my wife and I would definitely come back.

Great Room. Mediocre Food.

We had a really nice 4th story japanese-style room overlooking a stream with view into a mountainside. Beautiful onsen. However, of the 4 ryokan's we stayed at in Japan, this one had the poorest food. Very large and touristy place.

Il Ryokan IWASO è un'esperienza autentica e indimenticabile, immersa nella tranquillità dell'isola di Miyajima. La sua posizione, nel cuore dell'isola e circondata dal verde, offre un rifugio di pace.
La struttura è comodamente raggiungibile dal porto in soli cinque minuti a piedi, ma per chi preferisce, è disponibile una navetta gratuita. La posizione permette di esplorare facilmente l'isola, godendosi passeggiate serali o mattutine prima dell'arrivo della folla di turisti.
Abbiamo soggiornato nell'edificio storico, in particolare nella stanza 201. La camera era bella ed abbastanza curata, ma non nei dettagli che ci si aspetterebbe da una struttura di questo livello. La camera aveva un incantevole terrazzo che si affacciava direttamente sul bosco e sul ruscello adiacente alla struttura.

L'esperienza del soggiorno è arricchita da diversi tocchi tradizionali:

Vengono forniti abiti tipici per la cena e per muoversi all'interno del ryokan.

Durante la cena, la camera viene preparata con futon.

All'arrivo, viene offerto un tè freddo e in omaggio vengono lasciate delle borsette di stoffa, un gesto molto apprezzato. (Piccola nota negativa: Vista la caratura ed il costo della struttura, ci saremmo aspettati qualche attenzione in più).

L'Onsen è uno dei punti di forza del ryokan: pulito, ben fornito di prodotti e dotato sia di una vasca interna che di una esterna. Quella all'aperto, in particolare, offre un'esperienza sensoriale unica, con il rumore del ruscello.

Verblijven in deze Ryokan uit 1854 is als logeren in een museum - op een positieve manier. Het was een unieke ervaring. Er wordt welkomst thee geserveerd op de kamer, het diner en ontbijt worden geserveerd in het restaurant. De Onsen is ook zeer goed uitgerust.
