The property is located within walking distance to all the heritage attractions of Nikko. Big plus if you are spending the time to visit those attractions and downtown Nikko.
The dinner and breakfast were included in the \"half board\" package. Wonderful food and beautifully presented, very typical of the Japanese ryokan style.
We had the Japanese style tatami room which is very spacious. It has ensuite toilet and wash basin but not the shower/bath. That you have to go to the onsen common bathroom to do. Not a problem for us.
The property is a bit dated. The colour and decors were dull, and the onsen itself has tiles that were dislodging from the wall due to the high humidity and poor ventilation. Therefore, the inn doesn't give that ryokan charm and doesn't promote that relaxing zen feel. A refreshed look would bring this inn to the level which would be more in line with the wonderful service from the staff and the amazing food.

Wonderful 2 night stay in a great location with super friendly and lovely helpful staff, in a beautiful location.
Despite my late arrival the hotel kept dinner for me and couldn’t have done more to be helpful during my stay.
Great location for sunrise, sunset and anytime walks for photo ops at the famous Shinkyo bridge, and close to loads of shrines and temples right in the national park

Great Retreat in Nikko

Hotel is above average with good facility also it’s a plus for hotel providing free shuttle to and from Nikko stations.

Be warned that the Japanese style room does not have a private bath. I couldn't use the hot springs since I have visible tattos and tattos are not allowed (seriously?!).

Great location for sightseeing but not much more

We enjoyed being able to walk to the main sights and to / from the train station. The room had a nice view and traditional Japanese furniture. The hotel might be from the 1970s/ 1980s and have not been renovated in a long time. We tried the private family Onsen and it was quite disappointing. Not very clean and just tap water in a tub.. A dangerous feature is the hot water that’s burning hot in the showers, so be careful if you travel with children. The dinner and breakfast had a couple of tasty dishes but overall left us longing for the food at other Ryokans we have stayed at.

A Priceless Experience

It was the first time I stayed in a ryokan, so it was great. I got to sleep in a futon, take a bath in an onsen and have Japanese meals. The experience is priceless!

Nikko - make it a day trip next time

Food (breakfast and dinner - Japanese style) was excellent. Unfortunately, having been to several onsens over the years, I was really disappointed with the bath. Places in Hakone are much nicer and there is more to see in the area. I was in Beppu on this trip as well, and very nice places there as well. Also, for some reason, we (with companion) both agreed the futon / tatami mats just could not find a comfortable position; again, the ryokan / onsen we stayed at in Beppu (and previously in Hakone and Nagoya) had comfortable beds and extra pillows. This is not a - bad - place, just that if I am in Nikko again, I will look for somewhere else to stay. Maybe even just do a day trip to the area.

Very well located, a few minutes from the key area to visit. Hotel itself is a bit old and could use some renovation. Service is very nice, high attention to details. I’d suggest taking the dinner option since the town is very small and there aren’t many options available.

A wonderful example of local hospitality

We had a fantastic time in nikko staying at this Ryokan.
We were greeted wonderfully by the hosts and shown to our room. Check in was easy and straight. Enjoy seeing your name written up on the welcome board
Room was simple and elegant with a woman defiled sitting area.
We were provided with yukatas and the jacket to stay warm while at the Ryokan.
Or room had a private toilet and we bought the package that included our dinner.
Food- some elegant and tasty. We bought the half board package and everything was well seasoned and prepared.

Travel tip - get the Ryokan to fax your details to the tourist desk early to ensure you get the nikko pass at half price.

Simple check in and friendly staff.
Room was big and clean, dinner and breakfast were huge and filling.
Provided shuttle bus to the train station (and also does pickup if you organise it)
Location is good for all the main tourist attractions. Not too close to any shops at night though.

Quite worn out, but great value for money

For the price I paid which included dinner and breakfast, it was great value for money. However, the hotel was pretty worn out, and the walls are quite thin. The hotel converted the room next door to a dinner room, and during dinner times, I could clearly hear the conversation next door. Luckily after dinner, it was fine as it was empty.

Great location right next to the famous shrines and temples and shuttle service to train station at varies times was useful indeed.

An amazing value. We love it here so much that after our first night, we booked an additional night a few days later. Kind staff. Located right in the middle of the temple area in Nikko. Nice onsen. And wonderful plentiful beautiful food. We recommend the half board with dinner and breakfast. Great sleep on tatami and futon. We will be back!

Near Toshogu Shrine

We enjoyed our stay at the Tokanso (April2017). The ryokan itself is old and dated, however, it seems like they are making upgrades throughout. The onsen area was fully renovated and very nice. Our room needed some updating - showing a lot of wear-and-tear. There is a toilet (seemed new) and a sink in the sitting area (kind of weird), but no shower. Not sure if this is the case for every room. We used the onsen facilities for bathing and washing up in the morning so that was not a problem for us. Call ahead to reserve free pick up from the train station. Make sure you let them know which train station you will be arriving at - Tobu Nikko or JR Nikko. They also have a shuttle service to the train stations but you must reserve a day in advance. 5-minute walk to the Toshogu Shrine. We've stayed at several onsen ryokans in Japan and found that the food here was the best. The pork shabu shabu was fantastic. I think you can select your dinner so look online. Limited English spoken by the staff. We speak Japanese so we didn't have any problems but if you've never been to an onsen or experienced Japanese-style meals, it may be a little difficult since there weren't many signage or explanation of the menu in English. It seems like there were a lot of foreign guests so perhaps this will improve in the future. :-)

Great value Japanese style hotel with onsen

This is an old Japanese style hotel with onsen. The location is superb as it is within walkable distance to the world heritage shrines in Nikko. Hotel provides free shuttle to Tobu and JR Nikko stations which is a 5 mins ride. The food is traditional Japanese set course dinner and breakfast which we enjoyed a lot. Onsen is relaxing and very clean.

CLOSE TO SHRINES WITH A GOOD ONSEN

Great location. Use the shuttle bus option from the station to arrive. Once you get your bearings, it's easy to walk down to the bus to get you everywhere and to lots of restaurants and the sacred bridge. It is right next door to the biggest shrines in the wooded area so a lovely ambience and easy access. Onsen is great here and the traditional rooms are lovely. We ate at the restaurants in town which were fantastic - try the yakisoba in town. Wonderful!

AVOID THIS PLACE

I booked this hotel based on the 3-star rating and seemingly good reviews. First, be warned that the Japanese style room does not have a private bath. Second, the room and hallways had a musty odor.
As for location, yes, it is very close to the world heritage site, as advertised, but there is little else in the area that was open as far as restaurants, etc. It's probably better to stay near the Nikko station and take the short bus ride to the shrines.
On the good side, the public bath (onsen) is well maintained, and the host/hostess were nice enough to accommodate our request for a vegetarian breakfast. But overall I can't recommend this hotel.

Fabulous stay in Nikko

Probably one of the beat ryokan I have ever stayed at, even though it is quite small. It's located about 5 minutes from Toshogu and other Nikko temples. The room was clean and comfortable, and the dinner and breakfasts were delicious and fresh. The baths were also open fairly late/early so you could relax there pretty much any time you wanted. The staff were also very friendly and accommodating. If I'm ever back in Nikko I would definitely stay here in a heartbeat!

traditional ryokan. my room had a large window front with a nice view of the nearby river and the trees. breakfast and dinner was huge and tasty. the onsen is spacious and also has an outdoor pool. staff is very friendly and helpful. hotel location is perfect for sightseeing in nikko. i would definitly stay at nikko tokanso again.

Stayed here on the 29th March 2016. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and they looked after our luggage while we were out exploring Nikko.

The room is a good size and was immaculate. The maid prepares green tea when you arrive at your room, she then makes up the beds during dinner.

Dinner and breakfast were huge. I very much recommend the Japanese option when given the choice of Japanese or Western food.

The onsen was great and was empty on the two occasions I used it.

I would definitely stay here again, and I would recommend to others.

Convenient B-class Hotel. Will go again

About 8-10 min walk from the hotel, it may be hard to find at first but once you do its located in a convenient place. First upon arrival we were greeted by a gentleman who guided us to the front desk. I speak fluent Japanese so there was no trouble getting the room fast.

Room: 3 bed room, for a Japanese hotel its normal size (small). Bathroom is little outdated, worst part about the bathroom is that there's no fan in there. 14 day stay and around day 3 I could see the Mold build up. House cleaning attempts to clean it but meh. AC for our room was down, but fortunately it was during middle of March.

Staff: Excellent, whenever I had a question they were sincere and always helpful.

Overall 4/5 for me

Ryokan in Nikko

This was my first stay at a Ryokan and it was a great experience. The room that I had included an attached restoom (from what i saw this isn't the case for all rooms). The Ryokan is showing its age, however it adds character to the place instead of being a problem, which is refreshing given how modern/sterile most hotels are in the bigger cities in Japan. Nikko Tokanso is also located extremely close to the tourist areas of Nikko (about a 5 minute walk). The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and were able to speak passable English.

Good hotel but RUDE drivers.

Overall I really like this hotel. Our room was big and there were many facilities inside. The sauna zone was very new and convenient but the restroom was quite old and narrow and it is not in our room. The receptionists were really nice but there are not always at the counter since when I called here before arriving someone who couldn't speak English picked up and keep shouting in Japanese to us and he seemed to be angry that we couldn't speak Japanese. However, the only one thing that I was really disappointed is the driver of the shuttle bus from the hotel to the station. he drove so madly like in car racing that our baggage were rolled to the left and the ride side of the car.

Our overall stay here was very positive. It is situated about 10 minutes walk from the north end of town and is literally at the start of all the shrines in the forest. It's a perfect location.

Inside it's a little dated and a bit rough around the edges in places, but it's spacious and comfortable.

This is a nice smaller size hotel right next to Toshogu shrine. Location is hard to beat for exploring the temples or taking the buses up further to Chusenji or Yumoto. The food is great and the staff always friendly. The onsen bath is ok. I've been here twice and would come back again.

The only Ryokan in our autumn trip.

First of all we're grateful for a japanese woman's help when we arrived at Jr station in Nikko and had some communication problems asking about the bus pass etc.
She even called the hotel for a shuttle bus .
The hotel allowed us to check in at the time we got to the hotel , 3 hrs earlier. The Front staff were helpful with fluently english speaking. The world Herritage Sites could be reach by walking.
Our futons were very comfortable. We're impressed.

Homely place with great food

I went to Nikko Tokanso with my parents and we were very impressed by two things: the service and the food. Hotel staff were very accommodating and helpful, and went to the trouble to explain things to us the best they could, given that we spoke English. As for food, we were blown away by the kaiseki dinner that was served (no extra charge) - numerous dishes, each presented very nicely and tasted so good. It was a memorable culinary experience for us.

We didn't have time to explore the neighbourhood as we arrived in the late afternoon and had to leave the next day at noon. It was also raining heavily so we stayed indoors.

One thing that could be improved was the instructions/rules for the hot spring. As this was my first hot spring experience, I wasn't sure what is allowed and what is not. So it would be good if more instructions were provided, maybe a sign can be pasted in the changing room to explain the proper procedure.

It is a nice hotel close to temples. We like its location: quite green zone. We booked a room and breakfast in a Japanese style and glad that we did these.
The onsen was good and not crowded. The hotel offers a shuttle but you have to book pick up from a train station in advance (we did not do this and walked from the station).

Nice hotel with friendly staff

I only stayed here for one night, it was an enjoyable side trip from Tokyo. It's a nice hotel with very friendly staff, plus very close to the tourist spots in Nikko. Unfortunately I couldn't use the public baths because of my tattoos, but they look lovely. I was offered the use of the private bath, but honestly unless you're forced to then don't. It was pretty run down, the public baths are much nicer. If you have time and it's sunny then Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls are worth a visit, there's not a lot to do but it's stunning on a nice day.

Only good things to say about our stay in Nikko! The traditional room was all we hoped for and even had a full view on a garden. However it might not be for everyone (traditional Japanese rooms have futons on the floor to sleep).
The onsen were also perfectly kept and very enjoyable.

It was amazing! The room was better than I had imagined and everything was really well maintained. The staff were so helpful, explaining everything and providing English maps and instructions for everything thing you might need. The location was great, easy to get to and there was so much to see within easy walking distance. The onsen was Lovely and had long opening hours so you can always find time to go. I would highly recommend this place to everyone.

You fill the authentic old Japanese style! But the room don't have bathroom inside and the futon is not too soft... So it's a one night experience. To compensate that the staff is so friendly and the location is perfect to see all important temples in Nikko.

Lovely Ryokan

I took a taxi to Nikko Tokanso out of convenience- would set you back at about 1000yen. I arrived early and wasn't able to check in. But was allowed to leave my luggage whilst I went exploring. As described Toshugu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple and Futarasan Shrine are within walking proximity. Just remember shoes off even when entering the lobby- once you go inside they will ask you to remove your shoes and change into slippers.

The hotel is old and gives the traditional ryokan feel. The bedding was comfortable and room was equipped with a heater for those cold nights. The toilet in my room was outdated but I guess that comes with the age of the ryokan.
The onsen experence itself is amazing (once you get over the whole naked process). They do have a shower with curtain for some privacy but you'll still be walking in naked. They have an outdoor and indoor bath/pool.

I booked half board. Breakfast was provided and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the spread. I chose the japanese styled breakfast but there is also a western spread too. I had dinner there one night and it was pretty good as well.

On the day of check out the hotel did provide a free shuttle service back to the station. Be sure to check what time they are available. The other alternative is walk across the bridge near Shinkyo Bridge and there is a bus stop near to the station.

Great Japanese Experience

Best Ryokan!
This hotel offers the best Japanese experience: their welcoming it's warm and friendly. The room is very traditional and comfortable. Their Japanese bath is amazing, a spa experience. It is located in the best part of the city, next to the most important temples and their price is very affordable.

Close to the sights, good food!

This was our second ryokan in Japan, the first very expensive and upscale. This place was very affordable, and a great value. The food at Tokanso was just as good as the expensive place, we think. The onsen too, but the water is metered for bathing prior to using onsen, so that was annoying to me, but not my husband. We were here during a very cold time in February, so the halls and foyer and dining areas were quite cold, so we took socks to dinner, or eat with cold bare feet! Service was just fine, the people very nice. The room was somewhat older, run down a bit, but clean and comfortable. The bathroom area which not heated much. We had a room with the bathroom attached but some rooms had the toilet down the hall, and I did not see these. The toilet seat warming device was great, once we figured out how to turn it on!
We walked our roll along bags from the Nikko train station up to the ryokan, a walk we enjoyed as the little town is cute. It is just over a mile. The woman at the information office, about half way up, gave us detailed instructions on how to get there. We attempted to call the Tokanso for a ride, but there was no telephone found near the train station. Later, we realized it would maybe be a language barrier to speak on the phone anyway. The walk was fine after a long train trip that day. Enjoyed our stay very much!

Not much English spoken here but you'll manage! Traditional room which is turned into a bedroom by staff at night. The Guest House has its own 'Onsen' - hot spring baths for inside and outside bathing. Very close to the temples and the famous red bridge. Highly recommended if you want the traditional experienxe

Great Location, Great Food, Great Onsen.

The stay is very enjoyable as the staff is very helpful and the food is just great. It's a value for money deal and you get REALLY short walking distance to Nikko's main attraction. The onsen of the hotel is a must-try. If I have to suggest I would say the hotel's heating system could be cranked up a bit, both in the public areas and in the guest room because we feel a bit cold in the lobby, dining hall and for sometimes, inside our room even.

Most enjoyable stay

Really a fantastic stay. There's good service, then there's service that is way beyond expectations, and this was one of them. On top of that, nice onsen, good breakfast, easy bus ride from the main train station. The location is the absolute best to go walk around and view the shrines and temples in the area. The hotel created maps of local restaurants and attractions that made getting around so much easier and other travelers envious. Definitely recommended.

東照宮をメインで選びました。施設の古さはありますが、清潔感がありスタッフの方も対応はしっかりされていました。チェックアウト後も朝から昼過ぎまで散策している間、車を置かせていただき助かりました。東照宮メインで参拝される予定であれば、古き良き日本の宿としておすすめです。旅館というよりは民宿といった感じではありますが、静かに過ごせました。

東照宮にも歩いてすぐに行くことが出来て、立地は凄く良いです。車も宿の敷地内に置くことが出来たので良かったです。和洋室のお部屋はおそらくリニューアルしたのち小綺麗にされてますが、虫は多かったです。入り口やローカは修学旅行のお宿のような感じもありましたが、お部屋に入ると綺麗で驚きました。お食事も美味しくスタッフの方々は親切でよかったです。

日光東照宮に近いので選択。
受付ロビーはお寺と同じお香を焚いてるのか、お寺のような香りがします。

◯良かった点
・輪王寺や日光東照宮にとにかく近い。また、明治の館という人気の洋食レストランのすぐ隣りと立地最高！！
・旅館の食事が味、ボリュームともに最高！！
・宿泊者は荷物を預かって下さるので、重い荷物があっても楽に観光を楽しめます。
・今回、多人数で利用しましたが、一人旅でも問題なく利用できます！（実際、何名か一人旅利用の方がいらっしゃいました）

⚪️改善希望点
・部屋のドアなどは少し古さを感じます
・部屋のテレビは今の標準だと小さいと感じる人は多いかもしれません

少し意見を述べましたが、今回の旅行、こちらの旅館で本当に良かったと思いました。おすすめです！！

温泉👌

大浴場が温泉で清潔感があり大変良かった。働いている方もフットワークが軽く、滞在期間は何一つ不自由な事は無かった。食事もコスパ良しです。

A wonderful first experience in a Japanese hotel.

It was my first time in a ryokan and it didn't deceive me. All was perfect from the typical Japanese room with tatami, futon,... to the onsen. The dinner and the breakfast were each time different with lot of really good Japanese products. I feel more Japanese after this night than before !

今回は日光東照宮に行く予定でしたので東照宮まで徒歩で行けたのは便利でした。チェックイン前に車を止めることができたので助かりました。

Worse than expected

The twin room was not as described, we were expecting at least a basic bathroom in the room that you can take a shower, while it's only a toilet - scam. And the room is really freezing in winter there's no heater, pyjamas provided was thin material. The worst hotel during my Japan stay.

総合的に良かったです。
コンセントの位置が悪く充電に困りました。延長コードがあると良かったですね。
食事は朝食だけでしたが、とても美味しかったです。
東照宮にめちゃくちゃ近くて、とても便利でした。また利用したいとおもいました。

トータルでいい

大浴場あり、露天風呂もあり、くつろげた。
夕食、朝食は、ボリュームもあり、期待以上。
施設は古い。
日光東照宮も近く、チェックアウト後、車を置かせてもらって、参拝できて、便利。
年末価格だったので、値段は高かった。

昭和な雰囲気満載の歴史ある旅館

たいへん昭和的でレトロな旅館でした。時期的にお客さんが少なかったので大浴場では貸し切り状態。ゆっくり出来ました。
建物が古く気になる所もありましたがお食事は美味しく､日光東照宮など徒歩で回れるので便利。
アメニティが無いので持参されることをお勧めします。

快適に過ごせました！

年期の入ったお宿なので、部屋のドアが閉まりづらかったのが気になりましたが、掃除は行き届いていました。
スタッフの方々もとても親切で、気持ちよく過ごせました。
フロントにある無料ミル引きコーヒーを、朝食の時に間違えて頼んでしまい、最初はフロントにあると教えてくれたのですが、親切な外国男性のスタッフさんが、わざわざ陶器のカップに入れて持って来て下さりました。
2日目の朝は頼みませんでしたが、早めに持って来て下さり、とても好感が持てました。
食事も、朝、夕と量も丁度良く、お味もとても美味しく満足できました。
また、機会があればよろしくお願いします。

建物の古さを従業員の対応でカバー

・予約前に送迎可とあったのでこちらを予約したものの、実際に問い合わせをしてみると、その日時は送迎できないとの返事。残念だった。
・立地は東照宮からすぐなので便利でした。
・宿泊する建物の古さは否めない。たぶん修学旅行の生徒が泊まるような施設だと思った。ただ、お風呂は後から増設？されたようで、部屋よりは良い印象だった。
・一番良かったことは、従業員の方たちがとてもフレンドリーだったこと。気持よく滞在することができました。
・ロビーでは無料のコーヒーのサービスがあり、お土産品は安い！この点も良かったです。

暖房ガンガンに入れていただき感謝です。
部屋は暖かく、ロビーもストーブで暖かったです。

ただ、毛布がないので、浴衣だけで寝ていたら寒いかもしれません。
露天風呂は少しぬるい感じがしましたが、ゆっくり浸かるにはイイ感じでした。
日光東照宮からほんとに近く、何度も往き来出来ますね。
朝晩の食事は、和食or洋食をチェックイン時に伝えて選べるので有難いですね。
また来たいですね。

外国人へのおもてなし

外国の方が、しゃぶしゃぶの食べ方が分からず、お肉全部鍋に入れようとしていたので、思わず声かけてしまいました。簡単な英語の説明があったら良いかもしれません。
場所は凄く良いです。
朝、周辺を少し散歩しました。気持ち良い。

El establecimiento es un ryokan venido a menos. Necesita una clara renovación y mantenimiento serio (saneamiento de humedades, pintura, renovación de baños comunes...)

No todo es negativo. El onsen está renovado y destaca muy positivamente su cocina. Tanto el desayuno como la cena fuero muy buenas, comida japonesa bien preparada y sabrosa. Y está bien ubicado (un poco oculto) cerca de los templos y santuarios principales.

Es una forma de experimentar la estancia en un ryokan a bajo coste (siendo consciente de que las instalaciones necesitan muchas actualizaciones) y con buena cocina.

トイレ天井に小さなクモの巣がありました。
室内付のお風呂は、覗いただけですが匂いが気になりました。
食事は、朝・夕色々種類が多くあり満足でした。
思ったより日光東照宮が近くにあり、駐車場を考えずに観光が出来て満足です。
