The hotel is old but historic. The rooms were ample and very comfortable. The staff was super nice and went out of our way to help us feel welcome.

The location is perfect, very close to the temples and at a 5 minute taxi ride from the train station. Also walkable in half an hour or less.

Breakfast was very good.

I would have stayed one night longer to be honest.

Property itself has has an amazing garden with access to river and some great mossed areas. Also situated on the gateway to the heritage areas. Huge room with intriguing heating, steam-punk stuff. Views from room of mountain ranges absolutely intriguing. Furniture bit worn but otherwise clean. Hotel building fascinating to explore. Staff very helpful and courteous.

This may be my all time favorite of all the hotels I’ve stayed at! It’s maybe not for everyone but it oozes history and it felt like stepping back in time. The staff is really wonderful and were amazing. The beds super comfortable and the room had an amazing view of the river and mountains. If you’re a nostalgist like me you won’t be disappointed.

This was our first visit to Nikko to visit family. Nikko Kanaya was a good choice. It is a 150 year old hotel, modernized in every way necessary. The rooms are comfortable and spacious and the hotel was very busy during our weekend stay. People tend to dress up at this hotel and it is a bit formal. American style breakfast was included in our stay but the menu was limited to bacon, sausage, ham and eggs, juice and coffee or tea and a small salad. Not bad, but not great. Service was very attentive. All in all the hotel is a very good place to stay, but also very old school.

This is an old and tired hotel. It is next to the main shrines in Nikko, so location is great, but the buses in Nikko are so good that you would be better staying further into town at a cheaper hotel.
There are not many places to eat nearby, so we ate in the hotel 1 night. It was very expensive for a french style menu which was largely underwhelming, especially the main courses which were very small.
They also messed up our room and instead of giving us a genuine triple, we got a twin with a sofa bed - not a problem for sleeping arrangements, but on Expedia it was £50 cheaper per night and after negotiating with the front desk we received £25pn discount.
Whilst the hotel was generally OK, I would not recommend this hotel.

We love the surrounding area of the hotel. Peaceful and so close to the famous Shinkyo Bridge and Toshugo Shrine. The walking track to the Kanmangafuchi Abyss was excellent. If you love nature, this is the place to go. We were lucky to experience the Spring Festival and enjoyed the warmth and hospitality of the small-town people.

The hotel itself has lots of history. The room is really spacious and modern with a view to the mountains and bushes. The staff were very accommodating despite their minimal English. My Japanese Breakfast was excellent. Definitely we will stay here again when we come to Nikko.

The Hotel is very historic and designed by our favorite architect Frank Lloyd Wright…you can see clearly his influence.We only stayed one night out from Tokyo by Shinkansen.A short taxi to the temple and shrine in wooded surrounds was great and impressive.We treated ourselves to the fine dining/silver service menu for dinner and I did breakfast on the verandah type room while Julie slept in.Too windy..a gale ..and the Shinkansen’s stopped running so the trip back to Tokyo was twice as long..say 3 hours.Memorable trip to the Kanaya and Nikko itself.Wonderful location.

It’s a historic property and has a quaint lodge elegance. The service and amenities are very nice. The food is delicious. The room is comfortable I wish there were more electrical outlets close to the beds but I was nonetheless able to charge my devices without issue. The location, just a very few minutes walk to the entrance to all the shrines, as well as to the bus stop, is super convenient.

Appreciated the hotel tour after check-in to learn a bit about its fascinating history and that the building and rooms have mostly maintained its interior design of catering toward western guests back in the days. The age of the facility was expected and added to its charm and if any complaint in that aspect, was the challenge that we had adjusting the room temperature at night when the radiators kicked on (I guess we could have just opened the windows). Great service by all the staff. We enjoyed our dinner and breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. Hotel is situated in a very convenient location to visit the Nikko To-sho-gu.

Step back in time- we love historic hotels. Fabulous staff and service. Incredible views from our room and walkable (hilly) to bridge and shrines. Dinner and breakfast delightfully served with beautiful china, crystal and silver. The hotel is a bit historically 'tired' but very clean. For those who desire newer rooms, they are completely restoring one building which will open this summer.

Expedia says the hotel does not have a front desk but it does, and it is staffed 24/7. We have a room in the old section with high ceiling and 2 super huge picture windows looking at the mountains with the sound of a running stream below. The location is fantastic, being right next to Shinkyo Bridge and all the historical sights. The bedding leaves much to be desired, however. It appears the synthetic bedcover doubles up as a quilt so it becomes hot and uncomfortable in the night. The use of chemical air freshener gave me allergic rhinitis throughout our 3- night stay. The bathroom basin is super low. Only western food is served at the restaurant and it is average. There is nothing much to eat at night as almost all eateries close at 6pm or before. There is no lift in our building so you would need to have the luggage lugged - in our case, 3 floors up, but the staff helped us. In all, I would stay there again, but maybe for only one night.

Nice hotel with a lot of old pictures --- reminded me of the hotel in \"The Shining\" but not scary. A lot of period art work and nice architectural details.

Most restaurants in the area close early (5:00 PM) and the main dining hall charges over $100 for a prix fixe course meal. Breakfast is not a buffet but served individually, so one has to wait until the coffee is served, toast is brought to your desk, etc. The hours for breakfast (7:30-9:30 AM) isn't convenient --- our original plan was taking a bus to the Kegon waterfall soon after 8:00 AM but with the breakfast time, it turned out to be impossible.

This hotel is supposed to be the best in Nikko. I can see why that might have been the case atone time, particularly when they were receiving famous guests. However, the hotel is very much a faded glory. The first room we were put in had a dirty carpet and the furniture looked as if it had come from a very poor second hand shop. It was all chipped. The internet was so poor that I complained. The hotel offered to let us change room service and we did get a better room. The public areas were much better but still needed work. There needs to be a major refurbishment investment in the hotel.

Nikko Kanaya hotel was a wonderful stay. It is a historic hotel and one of the first \"Western\" style hotels in the area, so the rooms are much larger. The carpets are a bit outdated, but everything felt clean. There is no onsen at the Nikko location, but their sister location in Chuzenji has an outdoor onsen that you can use at a reduced price.

NIkko Kanaya is located in a great location to walk to the temples and shrines. There is a hotel shuttle that has limited timings, but was convenient for pick up from the train station, as well as riding back from its other property near Lake Chuzenji, near the hiking area and falls. Otherwise, the local bus would cost 200 Yen from the train station to the hotel, or a 30 minute walk.

Our rooms were very spacious. I didn't like the toiletries and ended up using my own lotion. They had hot water ready for green tea, but no coffee was provided in the room. The breakfast was not buffet style and they only had limited options with eggs, sausage, and toast, but it did fill us up.

Restaurants in town close early, but there was a nice steak house near the hotel for dinner. There is also a nice path behind the hotel to walk down to the river.

There were enough English-speakers at the reception and restaurant so that communication was not an issue. If you are vegetarian, please talk to them the day before so that they can prepare a customized meal for your breakfast (if you get that included).

The old dowager still deserves respect

Our rooms in the \"new\" building were getting a little careworn but otherwise this was the usual classy experience we have enjoyed here several times before. They don't make 'me like this anymore and you should rush to enjoy this historic mood. The Dacite Bar is our favorite in the world and just that alone would keep us coming back.

Close to the largest shrine...beautiful settings

Walking distance to town and largest shrine, (up and down hills) fantastic setting above river.
Historic hotel with previous guests including Einstein, Lou Gehrig, Helen Keller, Prince George Frank Lloyd Wright and of course you possibly.
Also can walk up river to monks statues (hundreds) along riverside.
Enjoy this historic place and don't miss the animation film at the museum near the shrines!

Very convenient to The World Heritage sites. Hotel has a shuttle bus to the train station. Because of its history, it is definitely worth a stay.

The hotel is past it's prime.

While the newer rooms may be OK- ours was on the 3rd in the oldest building. On the back side of the building the windows opened onto the roof of the \"banquet room\" on the floor below. The view was so awful that we could not open the paper sliding window covers. In addition, the roof outside the window was an \"escape\" from other rooms- allowing easy access if we left the window open.
The Wi-Fi was free- but the only access was in the lobby. There were no English language channels on the TV in the room.

The hotel is well known historically and is a great location to visit Nikko's temples. The room was clean, quiet, and large enough. The staff was helpful. Free shuttle to and from the train station. But sorry to say that the hotel is in great need of renovations. A coat of paint, at the minimum, is more that needed in several places.

Classic hotel at prime location

You feel like being set-back around 90 years when entering this hotel. It has the classic chic of the 1920th and you can feel the history it went through everywhere. The staff was very friendly and it was an overall enjoyable stay.

友人夫婦と私とデラックスツインを二部屋とりましたが私の部屋はトイレとバスが一緒で洗面台はビジネスホテルのユニットバスのように小さく化粧品をおくスペースもありませんでした。部屋にはメイクスペースもなくとても不便で使いにくかったです。配慮の足りない部屋割りにがっかりしました。

スタッフさんの、サービスはとてもよかったです！ですが、、深夜番のおじさんスタッフが入口カウンターでマスク片方だけ外し、椅子に座り、私達がいても携帯をずーっといじっていました、その1人だけが良くないだけで、後は全員最高のサービスでした！BAR担当のマスターも最高でした！！お部屋は綺麗でした。体洗うものがなかったのでスポンジなどあれば助かると思いました。温泉がないので、お部屋にいる時間が長いので、ネトフリなど観れるようになれば良いなと思いました。ご飯美味しかったです。また、行きたいと思います。

気になる点はお風呂のお湯を流すと排水口に溢れバスマットを載せてお湯が広がらない様にしました
シャワーカーテンが完全に乾いていなくて臭いがきになりました

歴史ある建物はもちろんのこと、紅葉の時期に行ったので庭のモミジも建物とのコントラストが綺麗でチェックイン後、日が暮れるまで散策を楽しんだ。
夕食も年季のあるホールは小綺麗で席と席の間隔も広くまわりの客を気にせず話せそうだったので、ボジョレー解禁日ということもあり、記念に頼んだがディナーとの相性も良く美味しく頂いた。
かなり年季の入った建物なので寒さが心配だったが、スチームヒーターの効きも良く、就寝前に弱めるほどだった。
大人気の日光東照宮の入り口目の前にあるホテルなのに、奥まったところに建っていて全く喧騒も気にならず予想以上に静かに過ごせて大満足の一泊だった。

Das Zimmer war sauber und das Bad war modernisiert. Das Hotel bietet für sein Alter sehr viel Charme und die umliegenden Grünanlagen sind sehenswert.

Der Concierge war sehr engagiert und hilfsbereit. Ich kam spät abends an und das Personal organisierte mir etwas zu essen, da alle Restaurants, Konbini und die Küche schon geschlossen waren.

Das europäische Frühstück war ausreichend, zu dem japanischen kann ich leider nichts sagen, da ich es nicht probiert habe.

現存する日本最古のリゾートホテル。その歴史を堪能するつもりで宿泊。
本館3Fのデラックスダブルで2食付プラン。
宿泊者限定の館内ツアーはホテルの歴史や逸話を聞くことができ楽しかった。
夕食は2つのコースから選択。金谷ホテル伝統の虹鱒ソテーはバター醤油ソースとのこと。
小ぶりだったためか調理法なのかわからないが骨も柔らかく頭も骨も残さず丸ごと食してしまった。マナー的にはダメ？かも…
朝食はコンチネンタルスタイル。外の景色を眺めながら食べたければオープンと同時に行く方が良いと思う。
建物は古いがそれも趣き。部屋の設備も必要なものは完備されている。間取りは贅沢な広さがありくつろげる。
現代的なホテルの快適さ便利さとは違う何かを感じたいと思うならお勧め。

Quel charme

Hôtel typique que l'on pourrait rechercher pour passer qques nuits dans un pays étranger. Accueil chaleureux. Chambre agréable. Dîner proposé très satisfaisant, un peu moins pour le petit déjeuner. Très bien placé pour accéder au site et eu petit centre ville. Aisément accessible de la gare (train).

歴史あるクラシックホテルとして、従業員の教育のレベルが低すぎる。

レストラン予約時、予約フォームに記念日を選択する欄があったので誕生日を選択したが、当日のレストラン利用時に従業員の誰からもそのことに触れられることはなかった。またそれだけでなく、従業員の接客態度は全般的に形式的で、温かみが感じられるものではなかった。

今の日光金谷ホテルは建物の老朽化や衛生面の問題はもちろんだが、それだけではなく、それよりもはるかに根深い人材面での問題を抱えていることを目の当たりにした。

この現状は、日本のクラシックホテルの代表として、由々しき事態だと感じずにはいられない。

歴史あるホテルでガイドさん付での館内めぐりがあり創業から現在までの歩みを知る事ができ楽しかったです。夕食，朝食ともに洋食で美味しかったのはもちろんのことゆったりと食事をできました。主人との宿泊，還暦を過ぎた二人とても良い時間を過ごせました

クラシックホテルの宿泊めっちゃ楽しめました
ゆったりとした時間を過ごせました☺️
館内ガイドもあってよかったです
不満な点はただ2つ
シャワーの水圧が弱いのが残念
夕食はコース以外のものも用意してほしいです(若くないので、そんなに食べられない😅)
あ、あとできたら夏はプール使えるようにしてほしいです！
