Super charming little hotel near the river surrounded by lush trees and mountains. It’s an older place but it adds to the charm. The room was clean and the area is super walkable to all main attractions. And close to the bus stop for the attractions further away.

A quiet, unassuming, and rustic inn on a small backroad, perfect for just getting away from the busyness of life. Staff are friendly and the location accomodates English speakers. Very close to convenient bus stations and nearby restaurants/tourist locations as well! Would go again.

We absolutely loved our short stay at Nikko Turtle Inn. The area is so beautiful, and it was convenient to all the Nikko attractions (we had a rental car). The property was adorably retro (but comfortable), the staff was delightful, and the on-site onsen are private. We are heavily tattooed, and finding an onsen that allows us in is not easy. We appreciate that it was not a problem!! We would absolutely stay at Nikko Turtle Inn again!!

Nice hot bath, friendly staff,
Easy to get around, close to shops and bus stop,
Only problem a noisy family with 2 children making lots of noise late at night and early in the morning.
Would recommend this place to stay.

Comfortable, convenient place

This is a lovely little hotel close to the main sightseeing sights of Nikko. The room was basic but clean and warm. The onsen bath was so convenient. They were really helpful by directing me to places and lending me a charger. Unfortunately though they weren’t able to provide a vegan breakfast which would involve providing soya milk instead of cow’s milk and tofu instead of egg, which should be easy in Japan. Thus should be offered if it wants to be considered as an eco hotel.

Brilliant!

We came to Nikko as part of a longer trip around Japan. It was absolutely super. The Turtle Inn was a bit difficult to find as there’s another one called Turtle Annex, but the customer service at both locations was brilliant. There’s free parking and the owner carried our bags upstairs and showed us around. There are hot spring baths that you can have private use of. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room and the futons were laid out for us when we arrived which was great. We fell asleep to the sound of running water from the river outside our room.
The hotel is a little bit on the older side and you can tell it’s had a lot of use, but it was clean and I would definitely stay there again.

A real bargain! Clean, cozy, and comfortable. Tatami floors and futons, mineral spring baths.The staff all speak at least some English (the owner is fluent) and were extremely helpful. Very friendly! They recommended places to eat and helped us arrange transportation. The hotel itself is a little dated but the staff’s hospitality and its proximity to Toshogu and the Kanmangafuchi Abyss (10 minutes and 5 minutes, respectively) more than makes up for it. If, like me, you plan to spend most of your time in Nikko sightseeing and exploring, and are just looking for a clean, comfortable, affordable place to sleep and bathe, this is the inn for you.

The inn is rather like a hostel than a hotel. It is by a river, and is about 10mins walk from bus stop, sights, and restaurants. It's OK if you don't have luggage, otherwise it will be quite a test. The place itself is decent and clean, just small. Our bad experience mainly came from that the owner insisted in charging us extra because we booked for \"1 person\" rather than \"2\", even though we had a double room with bath. He said it rudely that it was either pay up or get out. To subject a guest to that is an experience no hotel guests should do.

Comfortable like staying over at a friend's house

Very comfortable and the owners were very friendly and willing to help at everything. Good facilities imcluded ofuro (Japanese bath), yugata, bathing utensils and everything else, you can almost stay without any belongings. Comfortable bedroom with a table and chairs in japanese style. The utmost impressive thing was when me & my friend were running to catch the bus and about to miss the last train, the owner showed up with his car driving to find us and offered to drive us to the station for free. We were very happy staying and totally recommend for anyone who is going to Nikko. Best hostel ever, we will surely go back there again!

The hotel is a walk distance from a bus station and has great views and temples just 10 minutes walk from it. The hotel staff was extremely nice and warm and showed me the facilities personaly. The room was a tradition Japanese looking and answered all my expectations. Overall great experience.

Nice inn with good location and facilities

The inn is very close to the temples and shrines. The facilities are also very good, with a private hot spring bath provided. The place is very clean as well. The owners are also very nice and helpful, provided a map and detailed instructions on how to travel around along with nearby eating places. Toiletries are also provided! One thing would be that the room does not have a curtain and given that the sun rises quite early in Japan, this could provide sleeping difficulties especially if you do not wake up early. Overall a very great stay and I might go back again if I'm back in Nikko :)

Nice cozy guest house with free onsen!

Turtle Inn is a nice cozy hotel right by the river in the middle of a quiet neighbourhood. It is a very convenient base to explore the temples in Nikko. It is just a short walk from the Sogokaikanmae bus stop (bus stop #8, immediately after the red Shinkyo bridge). There are two 24-hour convenience stores nearby so it's easy to get is necessary. The best part of the stay is that the hotel has 2 traditional style onsen baths. So your style practically comes with free private onsen! (Though you may have to wait for your turn if there are many guests). I really enjoyed the stay here.

Nice Budget Inn with Good Location

Staff was very friendly and helpful. English was excellent. Provided suggestions of things to see, where to get dinner, and directions to nearby trails. Room was clean, quiet, and AC worked properly. I had a lovely view of the mountains and could hear the river. The window had a screen, so I could open it without worrying about mosquitoes. I had a room with a sink, but without its own bathroom. Bathroom down the hall was very clean. Shower facilities downstairs were excellent. Soap, shampoo, and conditioner were provided. Razors are available for free at the desk. I did not try the hot spring tub, but it looked very luxurious. A yukata and slippers were provided for going between the bathroom/shower and the room. I recommend getting the optional breakfast. It is much better than what you will get at a convenience store up the road, and nothing else nearby is open that early.

Quaint, cozy bed and breakfast

Turtle Inn is not a hotel or a resort onsen, it's a Japanese bed and breakfast/ minshuku. That being said, it is a lovely bed and breakfast. Very homey atmosphere but very clean. Friendly and helpful staff who will even cook you a homemade breakfast for only 1000 yen (very worth it as there aren't many places in the area open for breakfast.) The inn has a couple of public baths that you can use as a private use bath if you choose, which are also very clean. Turtle inn is within easy walking of several Nikko attractions, places for lunch and dinner, and bus stops that will get you the farther away places such as Chuzenji lake (45 min away). Highly recommend, would stay here again if we go back. Thank you Turtle Inn!

Lovely place that is value for money

May be difficult to find initially. After alighting at Sogo Kaikan-mae bus stop, just follow the river and it will lead you to the Inn. I tried using Google and it leads me to up and down the roads, which can be a struggle with heavy luggage. Good location, within walking distance to the tourist spots. I appreciate it being away from the town area so that I can enjoy the river sounds and the beauty of nature surrounding the Inn.

I needed help to book an overnight bus and the website is only in Japanese. Mr Kinya put down his reading and tried to help me. The website is not easy to navigate and he managed to do it in the end. He even brought out his printer from the store so that he can print the reservation for me. He has never once display any frustration or wanting to give up. I felt so grateful for his help, without which I would have a harder time to continue with my travelling.

If it is only about location/facilities, I guess anyone anywhere can replicate it. But when it comes personal service, it is hard to reproduce the dedication and warm service of Turtle Inn Nikko. :)

Small Cosy inn

The room was small but it was good enough for us. We just needed a place to have a good rest at night. The shared bathrooms and toilets are clean. The staff is really friendly too as she gave us a brief introduction on the places and eateries around the inn. Finally, a big thank you to the staff who allowed my spouse to rest in the room for awhile beyond the standard checkout time as he was sick.

Small hotel close to major sites

Turtle inn has a friendly and helpful staff, great breakfast (well worth the extra 1000 yen), and great location. We liked staying in a Japanese style room, the minimal furniture was relaxing, as was the sound of the river at night. A minor complaint: the tatami mats were on the old side & a little stale-smelling. A major complaint: the Japanese baths (no bathrooms in Jaoanese rooms) were not up to Jaoanese standards of cleanliness. Maybe because most visitors were not Japanese - but the baths (I sen) were too dirty at night for us to use, & that was unfortunate at the end of a hot day. But the price ($100/night) was amazingly low.

Small inn in Nikko Japan. In wonderful location near to the main shrines rather than the train station. Easy trip from station by bus (7 stops on the bus carrying on to the onsen in the park). Friendly and helpful staff with some English. Decent sized room with small bathroom (in our case). Room provided with cord with 4 outlets, good for charging electronic devices. Unfortunately, bed was old and not very comfy - could feel the lumps and springs in it. Most restaurants nearby close early, so it was a good walk into town to find some open later (and even then selection not huge). But nice to be there in evening, with atmospheric walks along river, or up to temple/shrine precincts.

My favourite hotel of our entire trip

Staff were brilliant, we arrived several hours before check in time, intending to leave our bags in the lobby. The helpful lady at the desk gave us a map of Nikko, and was marking local attractions and nearby restaurants on it, telling us opening and closing times, details of buses back to the station. By the time she was done, they'd quickly cleaned out our room and let us in early.
The Turtle Inn was slightly old fashioned, but cosy, comfortable, clean and great value. It's only a small place, the rooms were named after months so I'm guessing there are twelve. I saw criticism of the WiFi in previous reviews, but it was fine on the ground floor.
The best thing about it were the two hot baths. They were shared between 'all' the hotel guests (ie, one between six?), but unlike other Japanese onsen we'd been to, you could mark them as occupied and they weren't gender segregated, so you can share a nice bath with your other half and without strangers. Effectively you're getting a private bath for a fraction of the cost you'd pay in a big hotel!
Be aware that Nikko is a small place and restaurants seem to close early, there are only a couple up at this end of town.

This inn is an amazing place! Very cheap compared to the other places in the area. The location is close to bus routes and right near a river and many amazing sights. Secluded area, so it is very quiet, but there are some good places nearby to eat and the lovely staff are all too happy to direct you to them. A very well set out place and so many interesting things to look at inside. Comfortable room with good facilities. Delicious breakfast made by the staff. Cannot find fault.

The hotel is in an excellent location for exploring Nikko and is excellently priced. The Western-style rooms were decent w 2 twin beds. The breakfast served at the hotel was tasty. My favorite part about the hotel was the onsens (bath-houses) located down the hall from the room. The onsen is open nearly at all hours and is like having a private hot-tub/sauna. That is the shower area for those who book a room without a private bathroom.

Good for one night

Everything was nicely kept up although you can tell it is an older building. 2nd floor room and no elevator, but was helped with luggage. One drawback which made it unpleasant was smoking allowed on the first floor and of course the smell wafted to the other areas. Front was helpful with sightseeing advise. Wifi was weak to non existent. The phrase \"free wi-fi\" doesn't mean anything if doesn't work.
Still the room was comfortable and I had a good sleep. The onset though small was all I needed after a long day of hiking.

very comfortable experience

The Japanese woman who greeted me spoke good English and helped me a lot. She showed me on her map where to go in the morning, along the river a beautiful walk with ancient Buddha statues! Better than the famous places of Nikko, and a wonderful walk from the hotel. The famous places are also an easy walk from the hotel. I'm glad I stayed there, although the room was small, the location along the river, and the woman's suggestions to help me were superb!

Rustic, close to all the sights and scenery

A nice little inn located within easy location of the UNESCO temples and pretty much most temples of interest. Even better it's about 10 minutes walk to Baze Jizo Abyss with all those eerie statues.
The owner of the Inn speaks a good level of english and really happy to help especially with points of interest, restaurants and helpful information about the hotel facilities. The hotel is a little rustic for the price, but it was nice to have a Japanese style hot tub that doesn't need to be shared.
One final thing is that the GPS co-orindates given are wrong, which caused considerable difficulty in finding the place. It's actually on the parallel road south and further to the west i.e. closer to the river than indicated o the map. The actual GPS location is \"36.751361, 139.596058\"

The staff was very kind and friendly and spoke great English. They gave us local maps, etc when we checked in. Our Japanese style room was comfortable and included a sink, towel and basic toiletries. The location was perfect for walking to all of the temples and restaurants.

Good location, great value

Chose the place because of the price and that it was close to the Unesco heritage sites. True enough, it was a 10-15 minute walk. Restaurants and grocery stores are within 5-10 min walk (restaurants close early beware!). We took a taxi to the hotel from the train station and cost us ~$10 but it was worth it as taking the bus would have cost $5-6 for two. The hotel is run by a couple and the women at the front desk was very helpful and nice although you'd need some Japanese language to fully comprehend her. Wish breakfast was included but its an additional 1000 yen. The Western room is small but not unexpected given that it's Japan. Overall it was good value.

Japaness style means the room is very simple, so not comfortable. You do not have private toilet, and have to use shared-bathroom by the timetable, not anytime you want. With the price 1 man Yen/night, I expected it will be much better.

A nice small hotel in a great location

We had a great time in the Turtle Inn Nikko - the room was a little small (we are both tall) but that happens all over Japan. The tatami beds took a bit of getting used to - but other than that our stay was completely pleasing. The location of the hotel is great - very close to the ghost bizo which certainly require a short walk so you can experience it. Also within walking distance to the main shrines and the sacred bridge.
The staff were excellent, fresh fruit breakfast made me realise that I actually do like pineapple and everything was very clean and warm.

The location of the hotel was very convenient for sightseeing in Nikko and the buses for the Okunikko area were available from a bus stop nearby. A convenient store could be reached in less than 5 minutes on foot from the inn.

Prima plaats voor overnachting in Nikko op 10 minuten lopen van de shrines. Kamer zonder douche/wc maar private bath beschikbaar. Vriendelijke ontvangst en uitleg.

1人旅で、泊まれればよいと思う人に非常におすすめです。必要なアメニティや設備などはそろっていますし、温泉を貸切で使えたのもよかったです。バス停や東照宮も近い一方で大通りからは離れているので川の音だけが聞こえてきて快適でした。
トイレが部屋にない、貸切風呂なので人がいないタイミングをみる必要がある、隣の部屋の話し声や廊下の足音などが少し気になる点でしたが、強いて言えばというレベルです。
スタッフの方もとても親切で最後まで気持ちよく宿泊できました。

部屋にはお風呂やトイレはないが、その分部屋が広々と使え寛げた。アメニティも準備され不自由なく過ごせた。食事は近くのお店を教えてくれ満足できた。近くには田母沢御用邸記念公演や憾満ヶ淵など見所も沢山あり、日光駅から少し離れているが、神橋や東照宮など巡るなら、立地的にも金銭的にもお勧め。

A great stay

Super helpful and friendly staff gave us good information about the surrounding area. You could make coffee/tea whenever and there was a shared fridge, microwave etc. You could also take a bath in a traditional japanese hot spring bath which was amazing!
We had a japanese style room which was so cute but the futon bed was a bit uncomfortable for us.
Would definitely stay here again!

Dommage qu'il n'y ait pas les WC dans la chambre. Tout est à l'économie. Même tarif de petit déjeuner que ce soit un enfant ou un adulte. Peu arrangeant. Atmosphère spéciale. Bien sans plus.

ひとり旅

運営されているご家族(？)、マスターがとても素敵。わりと歴のある建物で、細かなところにも気配りがされていて、気持ちのこもったお宿であると感じた。
また、オフシーズンにも関わらず、お風呂・トイレなど手入れが行き届いており清潔感がある。

旅館・ホテルなどのように派手な設備、夕食などを求める場合は他に行くべき。ある程度コストを押さえつつも、個室寝床と風呂などが欲しい人、旅をメインに楽しみたいという人にはとても最適。

外国人のお客さまを積極的に誘致されていて8割以上とのこと。

とにかく、愛のこもった宿という印象だった。

大浴場

今回、ひとり旅でしたが、大きな部屋で快適でした。和風で布団で利ラック出来ました。何より大浴場は広くて快適でした。

很不錯，有機會會再次入住！

從東武日光站一出，對面就是巴士站，搭車到總合會館前站下車再走幾分鐘就到。我提早了一個站在神橋站下車，沿路風景很不錯，大概需要走十幾分鐘的路程。

前台大叔很友善，英文也很好，並且很熱心介紹附近景點。位置還是很不錯的，走路就到景點二社一寺（如東照宮）、神橋等...不過由於靠近民居，餐廳選擇不多...

總的來說，如果想在日光住的話，還是很推薦入住的！
