Beautiful located by the river with a great view. Our particular room we got was a nice room with a gorgeous view but I don’t this all rooms have been remodeled to be as nice as ours. Also, the hallways and some common area could use some update. Breakfast was great for someone who loves Japanese breakfast. No other options on that. Don’t miss out on a restaurant that the hotel is attached to called Satori, amazing course meal. Would stay there again.

Beautiful location on the banks of the Uji River. The walks we took along the river with the lovely scenery and autumn leaves were truly memorable. Room was spacious, clean, comfortable and functional, and the balcony overlooking the river was wonderful. Really appreciate the hot bath after a cold day out. Location is near many places of attractions including the Byodoin Temple and shopping streets. Uji station is about 2km walk away. Would suggest posting heavy luggages to the hotel; we struggled with our luggage as we walked from Uji station to the hotel. Hotel staff were courteous and super helpful. They efficiently helped to post our luggages to our next hotel in Tokyo, arriving there the next day. Highly recommended.

This ryokan style property served as a sanctuary for a night. The futons were comfortable. We slept very well to the sound of the rushing river and chirping crickets. It is walking distance to shops and restaurants. We will come back again in the near future.

This is a wonderful ryokan. The building, location and room are great. we got the room with an partial open air bath and it was excellent. The staff was professional, kind and helpful. We felt very welcome even as foreigners.

I do wish that expedia would list the schedule for the dining options because the Ryokan restaurants are only open certain days and require reservation so we missed out on dinner.
It's a bit of a long walk from the train station but not terrible. It should also be noted on the expedia page that they will pick you up but you have to schedule 48hrs in advance.

A beautiful stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan. Room was spacious with floor table for tea. We had a spectacular view of the river and mountain. A quiet place away from the crowds. Spa was nice and relaxing with two hot tubs, one indoor and one outdoor. About a 16 minute walk to Uji Station. Hotel manager was nice enough to give us a free ride to the train station.

Stayed with wife and two kids in a deluxe Japanese style room with private bath. Hotel is situated on a beautiful property. Room was big and “fairly” clean.

Understanding room was Japanese style it is still really out dated. Some walls marked up, toilet was yellowed from age.

Amenities listed included shuttle from train. When we called to arrange shuttle we were told unavailable. Took over an hour waiting for taxi in the rain. Message to the property regarding this went ignored. When we arrived the restaurant was closed that day and no food or store nearby. When we woke up the restaurant was closed again so no food for the family.

TVs are small and outdated, property claimed we could connect to streaming to watch English shows but it did not work, when we called the office they put a gentleman on that did not help.

The view from the room and bath is very nice overlooking the river but that was really the only nice part of the stay. Bath was nice but they have re caulked it very messily which subtracted from any luxurious feel. Beds were comfortable in the room but not living room, blankets were duvets and quite nice.
Overall, property has a lot of potential but we left unsatisfied based on the price and service

The hotel is sorely out of date and needs a refresh. The rooms were not very clean, most notably the bathrooms and the terrace had not been cleaned for a long time and needed to be upgraded.

We were only told that the restaurant was not open once we arrived, so had little choice for dinner as much of the town shuts after early evening. Staff were not able to effectively communicate in English upon our arrival and couldn't help us with any alterations.

The photos promised much more than the reality, and we were disappointed with the stay as a whole.

We loved our stay at this beautiful ryokan. The surroundings are so gorgeous and peaceful being right next to the river. Our room was comfortable for our family of 4, and we greatly enjoyed the stunning and delicious kaiseki dinner. Email them directly to arrange the dinner as they also provided a kid version for our younger son. They were very accommodating and responsive to all our needs. I definitely hope we can return again!

Massive room overlooking the fast-flowing river. Can’t open the windows as it’s buggy. Expensive place, as it’s a spa. I really struggled with sleeping on futons. 10 minutes riverside walk to town past the shops for matcha stuff that cater to day-trippers. There’s a really good Starbucks very near, but ABC in town is best for coffee and cakes.

20 minute walk from train station to the property. No eating locations nearby, need to walk 20 minutes back to find a place to eat. Most places nearby close early, around 6pm, so it was a challenge to find places for dinner. The property advertises a steak restaurant but it requires a reservation. We tried making a reservation more than once but each time was told that there were no openings. Then when we walked by the restaurant later it was completely empty, lights on, but no one in there. It seems the restaurant isn’t even open anymore. Be warned that the property’s website is very misleading. Our expectations for the property were much higher after viewing the website but we were disappointed to find that the photos and some amenities listed on the website are not accurate. For example the website mentions that a shuttle is available to pick guest up from the station. In reality, there was no shuttle. We had to walk or find a taxi.

Wonderful experience. Beautiful Japanese style rooms with tatami, really spacious. Small balcony overlooks the beautiful scenery of the Uji river. Great amenities and complimentary snacks and tea. Staff was extremely helpful, and their service was fantastic. We arrived early and they kept our luggage for us. When we came back later they had already transferred our luggage to our room. They also arranged a member of staff to show us our room.
There are 2 hot baths available for all guests. Hot baths are available until 11:30 pm and 6-10am the next morning--a great way to relax after a long day of travelling!
We chose the traditional Japanese style breakfast package. This included many small courses such as grilled fish, tofu hot pot, miso soup and pickled vegetables. Guests can help themselves to rice, tea porridge and orange juice.
Overall, a wonderful experience! The only downside is that the hotel is a solid 15-20 minutes walk from the rail station (although still a walkable distance).

This hotel needs some major upgrades, and more helpful staff. Other than the shuttle driver, and breakfast ladies the rest of the staff needs some training in customer service. If your going to charge customers upwards of $500 per night, please at least bring their luggage to their room.

Pros- Uji is an escapade from the bustling Osaka City. It is walking distance from Keihan-Uji station along the Uji River. There is another railway line, JR-Uji too. Uji is the capital state of green tea, so there are teahouses selling matcha tea, snacks and desserts.
The hotel staff from the reception counter, driver of the shuttle bus and the breakfast lady were very friendly and approachable. The futon was big enough for 5 of us and it was clean and tidy. Ryokan is okay too.
Cons- We went on December and so probably it was winter season, not much activities were carried out. Most shops closed before nightfall. Worst of all, there was a major construction going on and we saw scaffolds around the river which was a letdown.

The hotel is in a beautiful section next to the river and across an island with beautiful walk bridges. We stayed at a Japanese stile room. It was comfortable, but be open minded. It is not a tipical western set up. You seat on the floor as well as sleeping on futons that the staf set up at night. Close to the Uji train station. You can visit Kyoto easily. We loved it.

It's a beautiful guesthouse, tucked nicely on the route from Osaka to the west of Japan. We arrived late and we're greeted by a friendly team. We knew the river was close but it only dawned on us when we woke how beautiful the area is.

Their is a charm to the old decor and the place is clean and comfortable. My 2-year-old enjoyed the onsen very much.

My husband and I stayed for our honeymoon and it was relaxing and romanric. The rooms were spacious and we had an amazing view of the river. Hanayashiki Ukifune-en was wonderful! I'm so glad we stayed here a week. The view of the river was gorgeous, and a tranquil break from Kyoto. The 12 tatami room was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom is a bit dated, but quaint. All the Western and Japanese amenities are lovely (yukata and happi robes). The staff were extremely polite and helpful, even if only one or two speak English. Take advantage of both spas/baths on the roof and first floor. They give instructions on bath etiquette (NB: you need to take the scrubbing towel from your room; there's a towel drying rack on the balcony). ABSOLUTELY include the breakfast: it's a gorgeous meal, and enough for breakfast and lunch. They placed us in a different location every morning to enjoy different views. Just be prepared for the commute to Kyoto (15-23 min.; but included in Japan Rail Pass). It's a 15 min. walk to the train station, or take the hotel shuttle at 9:15. Uji IS on the way to Nara. Restaurants at night are a challenge; so you might want to dine in Kyoto or Nara before returning to Uji.

I was worried that we are not staying in Kyoto itself but i am so glad i did not rebook it for a different hotel. It is only 18-25 minutes away from Kyoto station by JR. Hotel is 15 min away from Uji JR station and if you don't feel like walking, hotel has a shuttle that can pick you up. Service, breakfast, room, view, amenities - everything was impeccable. Breakfast is served starting 7 am. Restaurants nearby close up a bit earlier but there are a few places within walking distance (closer to JR station) that are open late. We liked KoKoRu (open till midnight). Hotel has a beautiful river view, nice and quiet, and super clean. We had 2 rooms - botan and luxury suite. Both had coffee and hot water machines, mini fridge with free water, pair of socks, toothbrush and toothpaste, brush, razor, soaps and lotions, nice shower and bath. Rocking chair in botan suite and balcony in luxury suite. Beds were comfy, lights under the bed were very cool. Very amazing experience and totally worse the train ride from Kyoto to Uji. Also, next to Byodin temple, that opens up at 9 am.

This ryokan (Japanese inn) emulates the experience of traditional Kyoto living: the rooms have tatami mats, low tables, there are communal hot springs as well as private bathrooms in the rooms, and traditional breakfast and dinners are served. It's away from the tourist crowds in Kyoto.

Sleeping on the floor and getting up from the floor was difficult. Non the less, I expected this difficulty from a ryokan. Room had a view of the Uji river with its famous bridge. I enjoyed watching the cranes(?) fishing in the river. The steak restaurant next to the hotel has one of the best steak dinner. Which is the reason we were looking forward to our return to Uji.

We were not expecting to like this hotel this much. Not only the hotel is excellent, it is located in Uji. The city that's famous for their green tea.
The whole experience was superb, it's relaxing and we had the best time in Uji by far.
Oh and Byodoin temple is just a few mins walk. And for us it's the best temple, if you haven't seen the replica in Hawaii. Maybe there is a reason its been replicated. ;)

Nice hotel with river view

Rained for two days when I was there. Visited Byodo-in Temple and watched the commorant fishing in Uji river. Enjoyed the food and shopping for green tea at Omotesando Byodo-in street.

Go for the private bath!

A little standoffish...then the owner gives you a ride to the station in his car. Beautiful place.

Peaceful retreat

The setting by the river is lovely. The staff are extremely helpful. We stayed in an Akebono room that was simply beautiful. The bath was huge and everything we could have wished for.

Enjoyable stay at ryokan

The rooms are spacious with balcony overlooking a beautiful river. The establishment has public bath facilities, but some of the rooms even have private baths.

The hotel staff are very friendly and spoke very good English. The hotel was perfect break from the relative chaos of Tokyo. Clean, quaint, and traditional the hotel and the city it's in are a nice peak into old Japan.

Loved Uji

Great stay. This ryokan is very nice with a great view onto the river and surrounding area. It is central to Uji and we walk d just about everywhere. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. We liked Uji a lot more than I expected.

Place is cozy, location a bit far

The ryokan is cozy, staff are very helpful.
The location is a bit far to walk from the Uji train station. You either call a cab or walk to and fro the station. It'll be a nice walk on normal days except if it rains. Driver was only available on the first day to pick us up from the train station before check in; and it needs prior arrangements via email.

Greta Hotel, Great staff

Great hotel, very clean and spacious. Unfortunately when we went there, there were some constructions on the river, so we couldn't enjoy the view as much as we would have liked to.
Staff was very nice, competent and professional.
A bit of a walk from the JR station. Also, not a lot of places to dine around the area, they all close early.
