The location lends itself to a large amount of road noise and the trucks going through all night are incredibly loud and disruptive. The overall condition of the rooms was very dated and tired and well in need of an update. In terms of the physical location The property is well located at the gateway to Adelaide.

The photos shown on wotif were NOTHING like the room I got given. Based on the pics I chose this one over Jackson’s down the road which was $18 cheaper.- mistake. On opening up the room it stunk of cigarettes as well.

At least the room was clean and bed comfortable. The smell of stale cigarette smoke was overpowering, the crack in wall huge. It’s old and worn out. Traffic noise bad but obviously not the fault of motel. Long term residents are a bit disconcerting. Won’t be back.

Beds were so comfortable and staff were amazing. The shower water pressure was terrific. The unit was spotless. Would have liked the tree stumps to be removed from the parking zone but on the whole can highly recommend this venue.

The main room is spacious and has the basics (kitchen bench, kitchen table, dishes and utensils, chairs, TV and WI-FI).

The bathroom was small. The shower was small. The only sink is in the bathroom. It is so tiny that washing dishes with it is difficult.

I loved the art.

Clean and tidy.

The car park is not flat; this made it a bit difficult to park the car.

There was not much to like unfortunately, the management where nice and tried to help, but it does not state in the advert that they are a motel that take in permanent residents that are essentially homeless drug takers, it also states that there is regular housekeeping, which is true if you ask for it, we were there for 5 nights, and had to ask for fresh towels, and for them to make up the room, they did not empty the bin in the room, we had to, and the one and only time they did make up our room after having to ask for it, on return after a day out the room stank of cigarette smoke as if the cleaners were smoking in the room was disgusting, the place is very very noisy, there was a lot of cigarette smokers booked in and they would stand outside any room and smoke, which made the place stink of cigarette smoke, and being nonsmokers was not pleasant at all, on our last night there, there was a very weird gentleman in the room next to us whom obviously had mental health issues, and kept us awake with banging and talking to himself etc, until the wee hours of the morning, which meant we were not refresh as we should of been for our drive back to WA, unfortunately you get what you pay for with this one, will not be staying here again. Find somewhere else....

What was good…Surprisingly didn’t hear the traffic on the highway through the night.
Price was very reasonable.

What was bad…Only surface cleaned; smell of cigarette smoke in room, also in the kettle (maybe it had been used as an ash tray), there was a used syringe on top of cabinet in bathroom, inside the cabinet was disgusting.
I suggest removing the cabinets and put a mirror on the wall instead. Room inspector needs to look everywhere and smell.

The check in staff were very friendly.
We had two rooms, they both smelt like stale smoke. Both rooms were non smoking rooms.
The bed linen had holes and some sort of hair on it.
There were holes in the walls, when we plugged in our chargers the lights would flicker.
Towels were tatty, plus 3 to the room and only two towels and no hand towel.
Shower curtain looked like it could have grown legs and ran away, it was disgusting.

Around the hotel, wasn’t very tidy.

Yes it’s a budget hotel, but budget doesn’t have to mean gross.

The shower was tiny, the room was very basic, the bathroom sink was too small to be able to fill the kettle, the microwave oven had a distinct burnt smell to it. Worst of all was the road noise - if I had have known how noisy this property was I would have booked elsewhere.

Unit was neat clean and tidy. Liked having a microwave which if staying a few days would come in handy. Bed was comfortable. Road noise seemed louder than the last time we stayed, but noticed a few trees had been trimmed. Bathroom needs a bit of an upgrade. The shower recess was ok but the access is narrow. Would suggest an exhaust fan to be put in and to update the shower curtain a bit more regular as the one we had was a bit old

The room was fine. VERY dated and cold, but spacious and clean. What made this stay poor, was the noise from the highway, which was terrible! Seriously heard every vehicle that passed. Also heard entire conversations in the room next door. Parking was easy.

Noisy hotel at the foot of the hills.

The room was clean and tidy and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was small and pokey. You couldn't get changed in there. We worked out that the white tub was to wash dishes but you had to use a plastic jug to fill the kettle to boil the water to wash up or jug it from a tiny basin in the bathroom. The fridge didn't seem to keep things cold or couldn't freeze a water bottle. I removed a large shelf of ice under the freezer section but this had no effect.
While we were staying there both lamp shades bulbs blew and when I went to replace the toilet roll the white now yellow plastic holder snapped from old age.
But the worst part was the horrendous traffic noise from trucks using air brakes coming down the hill and accelerating and changing gears going up hill. This was relentless except for a lull in the early hours of the morning for 2 -3 hours.Hence we got very little sleep. I bought earplugs which increased my sleep but I was tired everyday of my visit due to lack of sleep. But it was cheap!

No facial tissues, hair conditioner, or electric blankets. No face washcloths or hand towel (only bath towels & mat). The very spacious but dusty & dated room did have a microwave, large mini-fridge, ample dishes & utensils for four people, portable heater, good A/C unit, & plenty of coffee sachets & milk. Wifi was quite slow at times. Twin beds were new, but queen mattress was old & springs could be felt through padding. Despite double-glass windows, the busy intersection was exceptionally noisy with loud traffic from long road trucks & other guests next door. Kind & friendly front desk staff who was very helpful & accommodating.

Enjoyable staff were very friendly and helpful it was a pleasant atmosphere and it suited us for our overnight stay. The gardens surrounding were lovely and seemed to be a fairly busy area. They gentleman arranged us a taxi which was absolutely lovely we enjoyed our stay very much and possibly be back in the future.

Bathing with bugs!!

The room was nothing like the photos.
The spa was in the kitchen/bedroom, right next to the sticky carpet. Once the spa was turned on we were showered with decapitated dried up body parts of bugs that had obviously been harbouring in the spa jets since the beginning of time! And the shower cubicle was so small that you could only fit a midget in it AND thats providing you had enough lubricant to slide said midget through the shower door in the first place!! The kitchen had no sink AND dispite the nemours appliances provided we could only use one appliance at a time or it would overload the power swich to the room. Thankfully we also had our own coffee cups because the ones provided had enough lipstick smears on them that we could have started our own makeup business and the coffee dribbles down the side of the cups led us to believe that the last people to drink from them spat more coffee out than they actually drank! Which is fair enough considering that the 2 tiny coffee and sugar sachets provided didn't even flavor the water let alone make it bearable to drink and that was with the 2, 30ml sachets of milk mixed in! Following on.. if you have a phobia of spiders then this place is not for you!! There were enough spiders and webs in the room that it could have given the cave from 8 Legged Freaks a run for its money! The pillows had a white cover on that had suspect yellow stains on them! The bed was comfortable but id suggest BYO bedding!!!

The Tollgate Motel is at the start of the freeway in Adelaide SA. The motel is an older style but has a fantastic budget rooms for people traveeling as a family. The motel staff were very attentive and helpful.

Our room was nothing like the pictures on the internet. Smelled like stale cigarettes, as did outside the room. Toilet paper roll was nearly finished when we checked in, and it turned out that there was no replacement. That made for a messy time, if you know what I mean. Bed had a fresh lookin indentation on top if it, on the side closest to the door, which looked like someone had recently taken a nap on it. Shower head sprayed water in all directions. Soap dispensers barely worked. Tiles / grout were very grotty. Fridge was ridiculously noisy - had to turn it off to be able to sleep. Spa didn't look clean enough to use. Many large, old-looking cobwebs in corners of ceiling. I've stayed in cleaner and beater backpacker rooms.

The noise from the Mt Barker Freeway is very intrusive. Interupting sleep. The carpet & facilities are old & worn out and should be cleaner.
General location was good.
I had prebooked us for 3 nights but after the first night we had to move on. No refunds available.
I recommend you give this motel a miss

Easy to find at the beginning of the freeway

Parking just satisfactory. Air conditioner noisy. Hand basin required plumbing work, Staff polite and helpful - attended to the plumbing problem straight away. Hot tub/spa was comfortable. Breakfast facilities were provided. Bed comfortable with firm pillows. TV worked well, WiFi number provided.

Very poor Hotel and poor customer service by WOTIF

The hotel was poor.
Poor lighting in the room, bad traffic noise outside which meant you couldn't leave a door or window open at all.
It was a windy hot night and somewhere in the motel some roof sheet iron was banging all night.
The fridge and air conditioning were old and therefore noisy. Due to the traffic noise, we kept the room closed, only to be kept awake by the fridge and air conditioner (And the banging sheet steel outside).
At approximately 11.30pm a blackout occurred which lasted 3 hours so the room became hot.
Adding to this, a man with an electronic location bracelet was staying in the room next door (He was clearly a recent prison parolee) This man and other undesirable characters spent a lot of the night walking about coughing, smoking and talking outside, near our room. This made my female partner very nervous.
I paid for 3 nights in advance and attended the reception at 08.30am the next day. I spoke to the shift manager and told him the room / motel was not to my standard or liking and did not want to stay another night..
He signed a statement saying I paid for 3 night but only stayed one.I asked for a refund on the other two nights and was told that \"you paid WOTIF/ Expedia and they paid us. You'll have to take it up with them.\"
I called WOTIF on 12/01/16 and complained. I spoke to a customer service man who said his name was TAUSEEF.
He gave me a call reference number of S-116580642. This man told me there would be no refund. Vey poor!

As usual, the room was clean and well prepared; the shower water was hot and plentiful and the microwave meant I could cook my own meals. Location is right on the edge of Adelaide, where the Freeway to Melbourne begins and, with a car, most of northern, eastern and Southern Adelaide is easily accessible. In fact the only drawback of the motel is the access to the freeway which can be difficult at busy times.

10 hours in the saddle

Rode from Melbourne swapped vehicles fought our way across rush hour desperate for a hot shower & a meal

This upstairs 'twin' (double bed) motel room was BASIC. Original 50's decor, carpet, fittings. Taps in the bathroom falling apart. Low water pressure in the shower. Used soap from a previous guest still in the shower. Saggy soft mattress. At least the sheets were clean. Not enough car parking space - no designated spaces for upstairs guests.
Not a bad view of the city from the room.
Photos on the website are of renovated rooms, but this wasn't one of them! Next time I'll pay the extra $20 for a decent hotel.

Cheap, value for money.

Great value for a cheap motel. Sure it was outdated, but everything was in good working order, clean and no unpleasant odours. Bed was comfortable and shower hot. Bathroom very small and handbasin tiny so 2 people in there at once not an option and there is no other mirror in the unit. Located just up from a major intersection but double glazed windows resulted in hardly any traffic noise from our position. We were facing the main road, but at the back of the building. Service perfunctory and pleasant enough.

Pleasant motel, easy access to city and hills

Location was perfect for our stay, as we spent time in the Mount Lofty Ranges, and also in the city centre.
We cannot speak highly enough of the gentleman on reception who took great pains to advise us about touring in the local area. The rooms were clean and comfortable and microwave and toaster were much appreciated.

This is definitely a 'budget' travellers hotel. Minimal Amenities. Tiny Bathroom, no kitchen sink (bowl given). TV could have been bigger. The carpark was insane - hardly any reverse room, I left for 10 minutes to get dinner and came back and a 4WD had taken my spot (in front of my room) and had deliberately parked about 40 cm over the line so that no one else could park next to him.
