Staying at Andon Ryokan was perfect! It is close to the train station, and a lot of other places. The on site onsen is really well maintained, and the art tile.is so joyful. It's dark and low lit through the main areas, which gives it a sense of comfort like you are entering someone's home. The manager, Taka, is warm, kind, and very accommodating. He took great care in showing us everything we needed to know, and was very patient and someone who has a hard time understanding accented english. The food and coffee was also wonderful. My partner has a whole mackeral, and I had natto, which is a dish I am happy I had the opportunity to try. There's also tea available at any time.

I highly recommend staying here if you can. The environment was stellar.

The facility and staff were excellent. The futons and bedding were very comfortable and the washrooms were bright and clean. The shared bathrooms were not an inconvenience and the art work in them and throughout the building were fantastic! We enjoyed the use of the private jacuzzi and rooftop patio and really appreciated the included breakfast. The breakfast was delicious, extensive, with a variety of choices, and served in a lovely eating area. After staying in other areas of Japan, our only criticism was that the location wasn’t close to some of the conveniences of restaurants or stores we could walk to for food. Other than that, we loved our stay and would highly recommend it. Such a cool building. So glad we were able to see and stay there! Thank you again to the very helpful and accommodating staff!

This was the perfect introduction to my time here in Japan, and if I get the chance, I will come back. The staff were all very kind and helpful. The Japanese breakfast (I had the fish) was very delicious. The ryokan was quiet, though I always travel with wax ear plugs, and my sleep was very comfortable. I felt there was more than enough space for myself and my things in the room. The onsen was easy to book, I was lucky with lots of times to choose from, and it was very relaxing after a long travel. 10/10 would highly recommend for anyone looking for a quaint-yet-cool, thoughtful accommodation.

Andon Ryokan is modernized to the point that it leaves very impersonal, cold impression. The room was spacious even for 3 futon mattresses but the walk to the shared bathroom was through a cold hallway (in March). To get to the showers you would have to climb industrial steel cold stairs with all your clothes change since the shower is on another floor. These trips were just cold, cold, - not enough heating. The bathrobes are not automatically given as it is in the pictures but you have to ask for them. The Japanese flip flops were given but without regards for the size: sometimes too small, sometimes too large, sometimes with straps so tight it was impossible to put your feet in them. The ryokan is rather at a distance to the metro, about 8 minutes walk, and the area is devoid of character, just bland buildings and highways. The person who met us at the ryokan reception spoke fast English but it was incomprehensible.

We liked the aesthetics, the antique collection, the manga murals, the background music, the tub, and the Japanese egg breakfasts were very good. One day we had the vegan breakfast and many of the steamed veggies were not that tasty. We got some great information about where to go nearby. I love my new Andon Ryokan shirt I bought there! Thanks!

What a gem! Super clean, adorable room with unique and beautiful shared amenities inc a sauna. My teem and I found it to be no trouble at all to share restrooms with other guests. Everyone was quiet and kind. Breakfast proved to be a special treat! Staff is amazing, gracious, helpful, and we had nice conversations with several other guests. Property is located in a quiet residential area which was nice. Overall condition of property was good and amenities were all clean. I really appreciated the Japanese breakfast options as they were all delicious and freshly prepared. The only annoyance I found, really, was that the my bedroom door was pretty thin and I could easily hear my neighbors scuffling around and talk outside of my room as it was in front of the washroom/sink. This wasn't a problem in the morning as I was already awake, but found this to be quite annoying at night while trying to sleep. Thankfully I packed some earplugs which was a good enough solution. Otherwise, it was a pleasant experience and am glad to have finally stayed at a ryokan on my 4th visit to Japan.

Great location. Quiet area a few minutes walk from the subway station with lots of eating areas nearby. Staff were very kind the breakfast was amazing as well as drinks we had at night time. Clean rooms with public washrooms and showers. Private onsen available to book and you can choose your breakfast time slot the night before. We will be back!

Taka-san was friendly and in fluent English explained all the important stuff like where Jacuzzi, Showers, Breakfast, Tea etc were. Traditional breakfast was also nicely described.
He helped us dispose old luggage at extra cost, per regulation.

So I'm going to start this review by saying that people need to learn how to be considerate and quiet in hotels, especially in spaces like this one. It's very small and there is not a lot of noise insulation so if you're talking super loudly, stomping around, and slamming doors, you're being a bother to everyone. Be considerate!

That being said, this place is a real gem. The rooms are small, but very cozy and the tatami mats were a nice touch. The futon was actually very comfortable and the pillows were customizable! Showers and bathrooms were always clean and there were enough available that we didn't have to wait ever. The private soaking tub was lovely. Oh and the breakfast was top notch. Nothing quite like fresh ume onigiri. Anyway, all in all we enjoyed our stay. We just wished people had been more considerate to the other guests noise wise.

Favourite hotel in Tokyo

Third time staying at this hotel in Tokyo, and would stay again. Excellent welcome and service throughout our stay, with a clean comfortable tatami mat room, and situated near (half an hour walk) to Senso-ji temple. The breakfast is excellent, as is the private bath/ jacuzzi!

This was an amazing find in Tokyo with an amazing host. While not in a touristy area, I find that a plus as it lends to a more authentic neighborhood feeling. There are also two subway stops in the area to use and within walking distance. The rooms were cozy and well maintained, and the onsen was very relaxing after a long day of exploring.

We were warned about the construction ahead of time--maybe its done by now? Anyway it was moderately easy to locate in the beginning by Google offline maps from train station, then it felt easy and close after. Btw we used navitime for trains/directions. My dad had a hard time with tatami but he was a sport. Luckily they had a couch for breakfast because he can't also sit on the floor anymore. We're Asians so we're fine with the confined space. Family run, they are very nice and very accommodating and helpful during our entire stay. That breakfast bread is really good! I would come back later this year and I would recommend it to adventurous friends who don't mind not staying in city center

This place is small, but it makes up for it with charm. A short 10 minute walk from a station and mini-mart, it's easy to miss it off the main street. The rooms are tiny, but I don't need a lot of space when I travel. The mattresses/futons are the most comfortable in Japan, and breakfast in the morning was always excellent. The bathrooms are incredibly small, so for a big American guy, they were a challenge, especially the one lone shower room on each floor. There was about 6 inches of space between the door to the hallway and the 5 sqft shower space, leaving little choice but to undress in a wet shower, because someone else usually just took one, and in to a waste bucket for your clothes between you and the shower. It's my only real gripe, but then again, you aren't living here, and the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming.

Up-sides: very clean, good amenities, jacuzzi is a nice touch, staff helpful.
Down-sides: though location is well serviced by metro and is close to Asakusa, the immediate neighbourhood is pretty residential without much going on; rooms are very small, fitting only your bed and luggage; the walls are thin so you can hear your neighbours and the goings-on in the corridor.

Reasonable, no-frills choice for a low-cost stay in Tokyo.

We stayed at the Andon Ryokan for three nights in spring 2019. It was a lovely oasis in the midst of the chaos of Tokyo. The accommodations are small, but thoughtful. The bathrooms have nice products. Extra lamps and other amenities are easily available. Tea and a cookie were offered at checkin. The breakfast is delicious. The greatest unknown were the futons, but they were very comfortable.

The location is a more residential area. It took about 30-40 minutes to reach some parts of downtown by subway and a taxi was expensive, so be sure you don't mind the distance. We enjoyed taking the nearby Shakura Tram through old Tokyo to see a different side of Tokyo.

A great alternative to a typical hotel stay.

Andon Ryokan is great. That's the short answer. It's a quaint little spot tucked in a quiet neighbourhood. We had a little issue with flights getting delayed. The owner was helpful in arranging an after hours check-in, emailing clear instructions to me.
All of the staff we dealt with was friendly, spoke enough English to guide or inform us with any questions we had. Breakfast is tasty and you have an op to meet other travellers in the little breakfast room/lobby. The washroom facilities were clean and we never ran in to an issue with not having access to facilities.
Our room is exactly what it was supposed to be. You have bed rolls on tatami mats. It's snug but my brother and I are both over 6' tall (185cm+). We had two large suitcases and 2 ski bags in our room and still had room to stretch out.
If you're not looking for the Shinjuku night scene or the more ritzy Roppongi night life this is a great little retreat.
We look for opportunities to interact with locals when we travel, so a place like this does away with the often sterile feel of a hotel, instead greeting travellers from all over with enthusiasm and kindness. By chance we ran in to the owner in the Narita airport and she was just as lovely and enthusiastic to see us again. We would stay here again.

The Andon Ryoken was a great way to start our trip in Japan! The rooms are very traditional, which means futon pads on the floor and the room is somewhat small. However, it was comfortable and a great experience. The breakfast is delicious and there is a great view on the roof. The subway is a few blocks away and the area is mostly residential.

If you wish to experience what living in Tokyo is like, this is a great place to start. Andon Ryokan is located in a quiet neighbourhood, with good accessibility to Minowa Station, where you can take a train to the other attractions in the city.
The place is like a hostel but Japanese kind. The room is very compact, but can sleep two people, and fit in some suitcases. The bathroom is compact too, so is the shower area, but they are all within reach of each room.
Breakfast at the lounge is very tasty, and the hospitality service is wonderful.

Quirky hotel with lots of character

There were 6 of us travelling and we stayed in 3 rooms. The hotel .. although very small had lots of character and modern facilities. We loved the quirkiness of the place. The breakfast was great value and the staff were all really helpful.

Cozy ryokan near Asakusa

My experience at the Andon Ryokan was great. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and I appreciated that they provided opportunities to get an insight into Japanese culture. The ryokan is conveniently located, i.e. it is a short walk to the subway, and even one of the major sights (Sensō-ji) is within walking distance. Moreover, there are a couole of restaurants and bars nearby. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Needless to say, however, they are tiny: go figure, it is a ryokan and this is Tokyo. Yet I had no trouble at all with this. So if you are willing to have something beyond a plain-vanilla chain hotel experience for a very reasonable price, you might want to consider staying here.

Love the cultural personal experience. Homely.

I simply love the homestay style here. The reception speaks excellent English, and very helpful. The exclusive jacuzzi was stylish and private. Despite the public shower is small, but I think that's not a problem. There is slightly a walking distance to the station, but it's a good walk to experience the local here. Overall, the experience was great.

Walking distance from the must-see Asakusa district in a quiet neighbourhood. They had workshops (tea ceremony, origami, ikebana, etc) on most evenings for a small fee. Friendly atmosphere, but the room was tiny (4 tatami mats) and everything was more akin to a hostel than ryokan.

Good Memory for my 1st Tokyo Trip

I like this hotel even thoght it is small (I believe the most of hotel in Tokyo is small too). The breakfast is good and I recommand regular #1 which I had it for 5 days. :-) One small improvement I can suggest is part-time employee should have more training espcially in the morning time. I can tell the regular employee was so busy but part-time employee had no idea what to do which is kind of waste of time.

the building itself is super cool, but also very simple, clean, and comfortable. the rooms are very small (7 sq meters i think) but nice and private and air conditioned -- all you need to sleep two comfortably.

sign up for the hot tub on the 4th floor when you get there!

communal bathrooms and showers, but you can lock the door for privacy, etc. all very clean.

close to akihabara and ueno. quiet neighborhood. if it's your first time in japan, just know that the subways are different than other places and there's a bit of a learning curve to figure out which system you need to be on (JapanRail vs Tokyo Metro, etc). station attendants are very helpful, most speak english.

Awesome location!

Ryokan is in walking distance to the Sensouji temple and Asakusa shopping/ eating district. Located in Minowa, an old part of Tokyo, there are lots of small and quirky shops and food outlets close by. Train station is a 5 min walk and 10-15min ride from major tourist sites like Akihabara and Skytree. Awesome stay!
