Had a lovely stay at Richmond guest house. Very clean, well organised, quiet, spacious rooms and convenient location. The free parking is organised by the lovely owner John, who emails the council your number plate (and then that is confirmed by the Wellington City Council). This meant I had an stress-free stay for 4 nights with safe on-street parking.
I had read the reviews of this property beforehand regarding uncertainty around the free parking, however Johns system with the council is legitimate as I saw the Wellington City Council email conversation with John regarding adding the number plates to the residential parking for the days guests stay at the accomodation.
Just thought I would clear that up to help any future guests with their decision to stay if they had worries about it!

Great stay all around! Perfectly convenient location to explore the CBD or grab a bus to points further afield. Our room was comfy & clean, with plenty of windows for natural light, but equipped with curtains to have a peaceful rest. The Innkeeper, John, is a pleasure & a delight. He provides lovely hospitality including a very friendly breakfast service, which included such a variety, something for every taste. We will stay here again.

The room itself was nice, comfortable, and cozy. Parking and other amenities were also satisfactory, which we appreciated. However, my overall experience was spoiled by the manager’s behavior. In the 3–4 interactions I had with him, I found his language and tone to be unnecessarily rude. What upset me the most was seeing him shout at my elderly parents during breakfast for no reason.
It was disappointing to notice a clear difference in the politeness and level of service extended to us compared to other guests around. While the facilities were fine, the lack of respect and courtesy from management left a very negative impression. Unfortunately, because of this, we won’t be returning here again.

Was myself and my 2 other girlfriends (21 year olds from Canada) who shared a 3 person room, rooms are perfect size and having our own bathroom was a huge bonus coming from staying in hostels prior. John and other staff were lovely, John even went out of his way to carry my friends heavy suitcase down to our room for us. Will definitely be booking here again if I find myself back in Wellington!

We had an early flight into Wellington so I messaged the day before arrival to ask if we could drop our bags off around 10am (not check-in early) so we could walk around Wellington without our suitcases! I got no reply, but we headed there at 10 & were greeted with hostility by John & 'there's a reason have check-in times'! There was no greeting or apology for not having the service available and when I said we'd messaged the day before he ignored me. He did allow us to leave our bags in his office but we did it in such a hurry & we felt almost shooed out that we left things behind we needed for the day!
The following morning at breakfast John was equally rude to guests making everyone feel really uncomfortable. Breakfast is 7-9am & we went at 8am. Unfortunately lots of people made the same choice and there wasn't space for all. John sent some people away & told them to come back in 10 minutes & then went on a rant about everyone having no intelligence & all turning up at the same time! Are his guests meant to be mind readers! He also made comments about some nationalities & was rude to a guest requesting filter coffee!

We had a great stay at this B&B and enjoyed meeting John, the owner. The room was exceptionally clean and quiet. The property looked a bit run down from the outside, but the inside is great so don't be put off. We didn't have a car but it was easy to walk to nearby restaurants and down to the ocean. We also walked to Te Papa museum which was amazing. The location is very convenient. There are tons of restaurants within an easy 10 min walk. The room was comfortable and had both a fan & space heater along with tea/coffee and kettle. There was soap provided but no shampoo so you would need to have your own. Would recommend the property.

Not there long enough to take in condition inside/o/side property. Did not use free \"continental br/fast\". Thought toilet outside cistern mould needs removal, bathroom needs either an openable window i.e. the tiny window above main window could be openable (release of steam from shower/basin) or a fan. When I tried to clean it off, coating on cistern seemed to be some kind of plaster/rough paint. A minor point but others might not like seeing it.

Don't judge a book by it's cover
From the outside you may not be impressed, but once inside it's like visiting your quirky old aunt. The rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet but the overall decor is interesting. The host John is friendly and helpful and a good continental breakfast is included. The location is fantastic, walking distance to all major Wellington attractions. No problems with on street parking, just make sure you get a permit from John to display.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Richmond Guest House B&B and interacting with the owner, John. Lovely Art Deco crown molding and porcelain collectibles adorned common spaces. Breakfast offered so many choices of cereal and toppings for the toast! Location is good for walking to the city center which was great because I didn't enjoy driving in Wellington due to the narrow streets. The room had all the appliances needed for our afternoon coffee/tea and a modern private bathroom. Would recommend!

The location was ideal, not far from restaurants and centre. The breakfast was very good and the host was very amusing. We were able to park outside the accommodation and the host was looking out for us to hand over a parking permit. Please note that when parking in N Zealand you have to park the way of the traffic or you can be fined. There was a traffic warden walking down the street. The accommodation was good, clean and we had everything we needed.

We stayed 4 nights in Wellington and the stay at the Richmond was worth it. The room was clean and big enough for a family so for the price it was good value. It included a breakfast hosted by John the owner whose brusqueness may offend some of a more delicate nature but being English, we just found it amusing. The building is Victorian as is most of the properties in the area, but the dining room was like stepping back to the 50's/60's with a period radiogram playing during breakfast whilst eating at old fashioned tables etc. It was interesting. The hotel is situated relatively close to most places and during our stay we found short cuts to get to the centre and to also avoid some of the hills.

We had the big bedroom with 3 single beds, lovely ensuite, tea/coffee making, bar fridge, fan, we didn’t use the rest of the property or had breakfast as we had a big drive the next day, the breakfast room was lovely with a simple breakfast on offer, John is a good host he has a dry sense of humour however we did not have that much contact with him, good location to see the sights and John gave us a parking card to leave on our dash while parking on street. Would stay again.

It is an old property in a quiet location little away from the center but in walkable distance about 10 minutes to all restaurant and pier side. We parked our car just outside the guest house with the coupon card given by staff. Room is small with all basic material, good for short stay as we caught up early ferry next morning to South Island.

This place is conveniently located within walking distance of the museum area of the wharf and lots of shopping--a great area for tourists in Wellington. The house is older and a little worse for wear, particularly the exterior. Being alone my room looked a little smaller than the picture. The host was friendly with lots of good info. He was available to answer questions during the continental breakfast time in a nice breakfast room. I had everything I needed.

Affordable lodging in Wellington
Had a pleasant stay here for three nights in Mar 2023. Location is pretty convenient - only two blocks from bus stop served by #2 (main bus line through Wellington), and walkable to CBD or Mt Victoria Park. This B&B is an older building and, like most places we stayed in (or ate at) in NZ was having a hard time getting staff. The proprietor seemed to be doing everything by himself. That said, we had clean towels every day and breakfast (toast, cereal, coffee, tea and juice) was included. Access to laundry facilities was a great bonus for us.

I arrived around 8 pm off the Northern explorer train tired. I was greeted by the Manager with a cup of tea and a short orientation. My room was clean and had beautiful antique furniture. Continental breakfast was fantastic with multiple cereal choices, toast and many spreads. Would stay there again.

This is a definite home from home stay, the decor is quite dated, but has a homely feel to it. John made me very welcome. My room is due to be updated, however the bed was very comfy and the shower was fine.
The only down side was there was a lot of creaking from above, but to be expected I suppose as the house is old. Good to have breakfast provided. Only about a 10 minute walk to the front. Would definitely return.
