The property is set in amazing rainforest gardens, the hosts are charming and welcoming and so enthusiastic about the wildlife in the area, so happy to show visitors the frogs and lizards, sloths and birds. The room was very clean and comfortable. However, it would have been nice to have a refrigerator and also an air conditioner since it can get very warm and the ceiling fan alone does not cool the room down. The staff and owners are super friendly and very attentive. We left very early in the morning and the lady working in the kitchen (I believe her name was Gira) offered to prepare us some sandwiches, which super nice of her. One negative was that things do not dry since its super humid outside as well as in the room. However, if you enjoy nature this is definitely the place to stay!

Great place to feel immersed in the jungle, with trees and animals all around. We saw a sloth, monkeys and agouti, they have a tiny frog sanctuary, and it's close to the beach (10 min).

Only stayed one night and wished it would have been longer. Owners did all they could to make it a great experience. Food(dinner and included breakfast) was great. Connected us with a trusted driver that got us through an unknown period with ease. Spanish speaking was necessary for that though

What a beautiful 4 days we enjoyed at La Kukula Lodge. Upon our arrival, the owner went out of his way to find a sleeping sloth for us to enjoy. The rooms were very clean, with clean towels every day. We were 3 in our room and not crowded.
The service couldn't have been better. We even asked for a particular item on the menu that they had run out of the day before and the owner went shopping to ensure they had the right ingredients for us. The food was terrific, especially the included breakfasts. The chef came out several times to ensure everything was satisfactory.
I would definitely recommend this lodge.

Notre chambre avec king size bed était très agréable et nous avons beaucoup apprécié l’architecture avec des matériaux exclusivement écologiques. De bonnes idées à retenir. L’accueil amical et attentionné de nos hôtes ainsi que les cocktails et la cuisine simple et copieuse de Jeremy nous ont conquis. Nous recommandons cette adresse en couple, en groupe ou en famille.

Excellent location for wildlife- sloths, howler and capuchin monkeys, iguanas, and many types of birds but to name a few were seen right outside our bungalow. Still, it was only a short walk to the beach and an assortment of other restaurants.

Very good 4 nights stay. The jungle surrounding is fanatics and you see lots of animals from your front porch. It really is just few minute walk to the beach also. Owners are helpful and the breakfast was tasty.
The only downside was there was no facility to make yourself something hot to drink and when asked for coffee I was told there’s none anymore.

We stayed in La Kukula Lodge for 12 nights. It was an amazing place to stay. You wake up every morning to the sound of howler monkeys, and a beautiful breakfast (very good eggs) with local products, and particularly good coffee. The accommodation suits its jungle surroundings and is very carefully situated. The staff are very friendly, Sonja and her husband (and 2 very cute children) are very accommodating and easy to be around. They did lots for us organising trips and talking about the wildlife. The lodge is in playa Chiquita (just outside peurto viejo) which is beautiful and quiet and has the most amazing wild beach. Hire bikes and ride up and down the streets like a local - try all the restaurants - we want to go back now. I’m missing my hammock. Thanks again Kaklua Lodge. we hope to return some day.

It was in the jungle so I don't expect posh, but it was clean and the surroundings were gorgeous. My toilet wouldn't flush a couple times but was fixed right away and 2 mornings I woke up to no water which was again fixed right away. The people running it and working there were super nice and helpful. No a/c if that's something you need. It was cool enough in the evening that it didn't affect my sleep which is all I care about. If you end up next to loud people you will hear everything which at 2am kinda sucked but otherwise didn't bother me.

Wonderful despite poor Wi-Fi coverage and water shortages beyond the hotel's control. Fortunately we had a room in a 3 room cabin where either side of us was unoccupied, otherwise privacy could have been compromised. Howler monkeys are VERY loud.... Staff extermely helpful and friendly.

Home away from home in paradise
La Kukula Lodge left me giving hugs to the staff and owners. It is warm and welcoming. I think the best part of La Kukula was the location. It is about a 7 minute drive from downtown Puerto Viejo, steps to essentially a private beach, a 3 minute drive from Cocles beach, which is terrific for surf lessons. But at the end of the day you get to go back to your room at La Kukula in a rainforest setting away from party noise and welcomed by the sounds of the local wildlife. There is not air conditioning, however, my boyfriend and I actually ended up putting our thicker fleece blanket on after the first night. With the fan on the night chills the room to where it is a pleasant night's sleep. I would recommend this time and time again. I can't wait to go back!

The room was comfortable. The shower was great.Breakfast each morning was very good with great fresh fruit, eggs in some form (fried, scrambled, omelette) and if desired a vegetarian breakfast. Of course the hotel is surrounded by jungle with paths to the various accommodations. If you have a large enough group, I would recommend the house with its own pool.

I stayed here with my husband and one of our favorite parts about visiting Costa Rica was this lodge. The hosts prepared a great wholesome breakfast for us every morning and had great recommendations about restaurants and places to visit while in Puerto Viejo. if you're looking for a laid back, unique place to stay, this lodge is really great. Sleep comfortably in the Jungle!
La Kukula Lodge provided us a fabulous jungle experience, great value!Upon arrival, we wondered if the ceiling fan would be sufficient for a comfortable sleep with no a/c. Little could we have imagined how cool and spectacular it would be when the night-time rain fell, perfect sleeping weather with the sounds of the jungle all about, yet a feeling of absolute security within the well-built rustic cabins. The rain-like shower, with great water pressure, hot water, and maybe the softest water we've ever felt was a great touch, along with the perfect breakfast included in the very reasonable room rate.Pleasantly served, well-balanced, just enough, not too much. And no rush. Conveniently close to Puerto Viejo, but just far enough down the road to experience unspoiled nature. A wonderful getaway we intend to repeat. Can't get over the sound of the \"Holler\" monkeys, they sound like lions roaring, no exaggeration.

We arrived about 9 pm and were greeted by Devan who checked us in and then prepared our dinner. The Rendon and fried red snapper was delicious. Breakfast was included and the fruit bowl with mango, papaya, pineapple and watermelon was beautifully presented and delicious. Breakfast entrees included an omelet, open faced avocado, tomato and bacon sandwich, pancakes or eggs cooked to order. The owners were friendly and helpful in recommending restaurants, sites to visit as well as showing us the best way to return to San Jose. I loved the experience of staying in an eco jungle hotel with no air conditioning, and hearing the sounds of the jungle (birds and monkeys) and the rain that fell heavily at times. I highly recommend this hotel.

Best Hotel Of Our Trip!
I could rant and rave about this place! Very cool rooms/cabana-type buildings backed up right in the middle of the costa rican jungle. We saw so much wildlife here - monkeys, the sloth (with her baby on her!), and even the little agouti! The howler monkeys mustve been just outside of our room by how loud they were at 5am! We stayed at a high end resort after this hotel, and I gotta say we liked La Kukula the best!

Great base for visiting Jaguar Rescue Center
My wife and I were visting the Jaguar Rescue Center and La Ceiba and stayed here for one night in January, 2015. Excellent location - the rescue center is about a 20 minute walk from the hotel. There are a number of restaurants within a 5 minute walk. The pizza place across the street is excellent. Pepo, the owner is very passionate about wildlife and showed us two sloths on the hotel property. We really enjoyed our stay - would definitely stay here again.

We stayed in la kukula for a couple of days and we enjoyed a lot this hotel. The rooms are wood made structures, very charming. Everything was perfectly clean and the showers are particularly nice.
Staff was helpful and friendly (the owners and the staff alike).
And last but not least... The breakfast was fantastic. They change everyday the breakfast menu and it always includes home made bread and marmalades. Totally recommendable

Fantastic place it feels like sleeping in the jungle, magical. Beautiful modern bungalows and delicious and kind Spanish hosts. Only area for improvement is breakfast, that is ok but not on par with the rest of the experience.

This is a great place if you are looking to escape the noise and crowds of Puerto Viejo and prefer something more remote. It is a short hike to the beach, but worth the peace and quiet!

Charming hosts in a gorgeous setting
For starters, the contemporary design of the cabins offers a unique bug-free jungle experience allowing guests to enjoy the sights and sounds --sometimes a bit too noisy for some city folk not used to all that nature! -- of the tropical rain forest. We witnessed such incredible biodiversity right on the lush and verdant grounds themselves, seeing and/or hearing howler monkeys, toucans, sloths, the famous red-eyed tree frog, lizards, snakes and super cute agoutis. It is a close 7-10 minute walk to what is arguably the best beach in the entire area -- Playa Chiquita. No car access to the beach gives it the feel of a secluded palm tree-lined paradise lost - even on the most wave- filled days we could go swimming in the small pools protected by the barrier reef offshore. The town of Playa Chiquita has some of the best restaurants in the area so we often found ourselves walking to everything despite having a car. What made our stay even more memorable was the hospitality offered by our hosts, a super friendly and graciously accommodating couple from Barcelona, Pepo and Sonia. They, and all of the employees of La Kukula, made us feel connected to the area and gave us an insider's perspective on things to do, where to eat, etc., always offering to book reservations for tours and restaurants. For these reasons it's the kind of place we'd see ourselves coming back to again.

Only for Exhibitionists !!!
We had booked this place based on reviews and expected to visit CR for the first time and stay at a comfortable place with \"attentive owners\". Owners were out of the country and the place was being managed by the owner of a another lodge. Nobody there at night to address issues to except for \"security guards\" that do not speak any english. Rooms are very bare minimum, no AC, which is not good given the recent increase in humidity, as we were told. The bed is way too hard to ever get comfortable. There are no real windows in the bathroom, only screens, so at night if you have the lights on, you are in full view of the guards with nowhere to hide. Our toilet did not work, was shut off as it turns out, and in the middle of the night there was sewage backing up into the shower, about 6 inches deep. All this to the lovely sounds of the waterpump, which is conveniently located right outside your bathroom \"window\", and seems to run all night, ruining any remaining chances of sleep. We politely asked to check out after our first night, were told that would be alright by the manager and we went across the street to much needed comfort. Now, over a month later, both the owner and Expedia refuse to take any responsibility and issue us a refund. BUYERS BEWARE

Real jungle experience near best beaches
My wife and I stayed in the La Kukula Lodge for four nights, after spending a week in an all-inclusive luxury villa with infinity-pool on the hills of Manuel Antonio (for our son's wedding). As nice as that was, and as pampered as we were, visiting Costa Rica from Denver, CO, it was our stay in the La Kukula Lodge that was most memorable. It exceeded any image we may have had of being in a tropical jungle environment. We found ourselves in a pristine and magical botanical garden with all its natural tropical jungle beauty, animals, and nature sounds. Simply, it was breathtaking at every turn. Our room was very private, clean, and most comfortable. The main house where we had wonderful breakfasts overlooking the heart of the cultivated areas, was so inviting just sitting there it was hard to move. Our host, Ms Joanna is a most gracious, kind, and loving person who truly represents the best in those of us who still care deeply about our planet and its natural resources. We rented bikes from a very well stocked grocery store just a few minutes walk from the lodge, we also had our best dinner while in Costa Rica at Pura Gula. also a few minutes by foot, and on our bikes we rode around effortlessly (I am 69) visiting the best beaches and little settlements this 10-mile coast had to offer. Will never forget the morning when the howler monkeys were all sounding off right outside my room at 5.10 am. You are really surrounded by the forest and its noises, especially before and after dawn and around sunset. The superb beaches are just a few minutes walk away. Great lodge away from the crowds of P Viejo
As Puerto Viejo was really crowded I wanted a more secluded lodge and La Kukula lodge was the perfect choice. The management of the lodge is top-notch and very friendly. You are in the middle of nature but a short walk to a super-market, bike rental, organic lunch restaurant and the beach. Enjoyed the breakfast and the hospitality. I think the lodge should also start renting bikes as one of the best ways to get around in the area is by bike. Would certainly stay at the lodge again.

My husband and I stayed at kukula this past week and were pleased. The breakfast is lovely fresh fruit, bread and homemade marmalades daily plus usually one other item (ie ham and cheese sandwich or pancakes) coffee is amazing and so are the freshly squeezed juices. Would have liked to have eggs and bacon some time though. Some things to note: the rooms offer little in the way of privacy re walls are paper thin and the blinds in the bathroom don't offer full coverage of the toilet or shower and my friend who was staying in another room swore she saw someone watching her in the bushes! This is not a party venue either so no music or smoking. Also the pool pictured is only for use if you rent the big house in the back but the beaches are wonderful so maybe you won't even notice. Wear lots of bug spray this is the jungle. Nice stay overall recommended. Also a good distance from the drama which is sometimes puerto viejo. Blessings!

This was a beautiful location, very close to a quiet beach and there were two or three restaurants within walking distance. Puerto Viejo was a cab ride away as it was not an easy walk (it took us most of a morning to get there by foot.) My girlfriends and I had a great time and enjoyed the area and the room.

What a great remote setting, yet only a couple of minutes from the darling town. Lots of cute shops and great places to eat. The beach is beautiful and the jungle is alive with critters.

My boyfriend and I had the BEST stay here. Neither of us had been to Costa Rica prior to this trip and we could not have picked a better location. If you have any concern about the four hour drive from the airport, let me reassure you: it is worth the trip. You have just the right amount of comfort and amenities. There are plenty of activities in the surrounding area (definitely recommend a snorkeling trip or canopy zip-line tour) and the nearby restaurants are lovely. La Kukula Lodge - We will be back.

Peaceful, Super Clean & Great Location
My husband & I originally booked for 3 nights but ended up staying an extra 2 nights because we liked it so much! The owner & his wife were super nice & helpful & cooked us a delicious breakfast of fruits & toast & eggs & fresh Costa Rican coffee each morning. The staff was very friendly & the room was cleaned very well each day. I took an excellent yoga class right down the road from the lodge each morning at 8:30am. You can rent a bicycle right near the lodge for $5 per day & bike to Puerto Veijo & a few other small towns within 5 or 6 miles of the lodge in either direction. You can walk to the beach right from the lodge down a pathway. I highly recommend it! Very peaceful & plenty to see & do & a great place to just relax in the hammock.

Fantastic place and very well run. It's about 5 is out of Puerto Viejo but has a nice beach, and a few nice local restaurants. You can rent bikes so getting around isn't an issue and there are plenty of cabs. This is a real jungle rainforest experience. There are sloths and monkeys and overall is magical. I would highly recommend it.

Amazing Costa Rica
The owners Pepo and Sonya were great. This is an Eco friendly lodge. The breakfast were very good. It is a very tranquil place to stay. There are no tv in rooms but trust me you won't miss it as during the day of exploring the coast you will be ready to sleep. Your rooms are surrounded by tropical plants and the animals sounds at night are amazing.

We loved La Kukula. The people who run it are about as nice as can be. It's set back in the jungle a little bit, so you get to see some fantastic wildlife, too. I was just standing on our porch, looking out at the trees, and BAM, three fingered sloth. It was incredible. Very easy close walk to the beach. Tours will come pick you up a the hotel for all the kinds of things you might want to do. Restaurants and a grocery store close. Chocolate cafe & tours right down the street (get a chocolate there, you'll like it). If you have a car, easy drive to the Sloth Sanctuary, Jaguar Sanctuary, Punta Uva, Manzanillo, Playa Negra, Cahuita, etc. We don't often repeat stays at places, but if we go back to the Caribbean Coast, we'll happily stay here again.

Everything I read online about this place was true...very nice and quiet in the jungle but relatively close to town. It was clean, the staff amazing and helpful and the breakfast was good. The only thing is that if it pours rain-which it did for us- you may find yourself without much to do unless you can afford to take a taxi into town a lot or have a car. Other than that it was great and I would recommend it for sure.

Great Individual Bungalow
This location was an unsuspected surpize. It is comprised of spacious individual bungalows situated in the foothills of the Arenal Volcano. Spotless, spacious, polite staff, good breakfast included with the room. Large bed room, mini fridge, safe, flat screen tv, wireless, HUGE bathroom, patio with table and chairs. Only downfall was that they cater to the smaller tour buses so breakfast is a bit crowded in the morning. Ran into many people who picked up a single room on the spot. Felt very safe here.
