We stayed for a week at the Umami Hotel and it was wonderful. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and offered helpful suggestions. We loved our time in Puerto Viejo and at this hotel. We ate breakfast at Umami everyday and they served good-size portions of high quality food. There are many great staff members at the hotel, but I’d like to specifically recognize Ramundo, Tony, and Rodney for making our stay extra special. We will recommend this hotel to our friends and family who want to visit your beautiful part of the world!

My partner and I (LGBTQ community) stayed at this hotel and had a wonderful time! It was our anniversary and the staff helped me arrange a special cake from De Gustibus waiting in our room upon our arrival! It was so very special for us. The hotel was very walkable to the central part of Puerto Viejo and also very quiet neighborhood with it tucked back a bit. We did get woken up pretty early (5:30am) a few days of our stay because they serve breakfast starting at 7am and with it being designed as a horseshoe, we could hear the staff talking and utensils clinking as they started working. I think this place would be better off doing lunch/dinner instead of breakfast because of this reason. We booked the adult-only to hopefully have some late quiet mornings, but overall the quality of our stay was amazing and we would stay here again!

Umami was such a wonderful boutique hotel. The staff was so awesome and giving. The hotel itself was perfect for my solo trip. The middle of town and a short walk to the beach or several restaurants and markets. I especially liked the fact that you could interact with locals and not only tourists and it was only a tuk tuk ride away to really nice beaches further down the coast. So looking ready for my return to CR and will def be staying here!

Umami is a gorgeous garden hotel! We loved our suites. The decor is just stunning. The staff is courteous and kind. Breakfast tasted amazing! We loved the rice and beans. The parking is minimal. However using bikes, a tuk tuk, or walking is the best way to get around this jungle beach town. Bring earplugs because the birds and other lodgings in the area may wake you up. As a Jamaican, I loved our culture mixed in. We loved Old Habour aka Puerto Viejo! We will definitely go back and stay at Umami again.

We stayed 3 nights at Umami in Puerto Viejo. The hotel is lovely, quiet and set back from the main road through the town but still only a 5min stroll to the seafront. Room itself was clean and modern with AC. Breakfast was typical Costa Rican and served by the pool each morning which was great. Free parking right outside. I’d certainly return to the hotel and only have good things to say about our time there. One advice I’d give is to avoid the sister hotel’s restaurant (Num at Namu) - it’s overpriced, quite basic and has no atmosphere and eat in the town itself.

No Glass Shower

The hotel grounds ,the staff, the location and the breakfast
was all great.
We had a premium room. The shower is the problem.
There is no glass around it, so by the time you finish there is a flood on the bathroom floor, Now you get to stand in water and brush your teeth ,shave ext. then you track water around the rest of the room. I wish the owners would try taking a shower in this room and see how they like it.

Rummen var fräscha men sängen knarrade väldigt mycket, skulle behövas bytas ut. Var även relativt lyhört från rummet vilket ibland störde. Lite förvånande att de även tog betalt för små vattenflaskor på rummet.

I had an amazing stay at Umami Hotel! The service was excellent—the staff was friendly, attentive, and always ready to help with anything we needed.

We’ve stayed here twice and it’s a beautiful hotel. They go out of the way to accommodate your checkins and travel. The staff is always very sweet and helpful. The hotel is super clean and that’s important to me because I am not fond of critters. The front desk people have helped us find activities, transportation, and late night food:) the hotel has a nice, full bar which is prefect for pool time. We love the breakfast, always awesome! If you want a quiet, romantic place where you can easily walk to restaurants, grocery, bars and the beach then make your reservation soon!

This hotel didn’t live up to the reviews. The angles of the photos are somewhat misleading so please expect a small pool and a building that varies between one and three storeys. The location is three or four streets from the centre of town at the end of a less attractive street. The short walk can be very hot on a sunny day as there is little shade however everything is close in the town. You can even walk to Cocles if happy to walk a little further.

We stayed in 5 properties across our 9 night visit to Costa Rica and this was our least favourite. We felt it was poor value in comparison. We received a room upgrade however felt this had flaws. The water pressure wasn’t great and bizarrely coffee pods were under mini bar rates. This has been compared against Selina (La Fortuna), Tabacon (Arenal), Mwamba Lodge (Tortuguero), and Exotico (Manzanillo).

The hotel lacks a high end finish with low quality soap products and a breakfast that would be much better elsewhere. The eggs were rather dry and options limited. It has no food offering on-site outwith these hours.

There was an unfortunate event on our first night which resulted in a refund for all hotel patrons. An overhead power cable exploded and caught fire outside our window but there was little concern for our safety at the time with nobody actively seeking to speak with us. The staff were very laid back about the matter but we were rather thrown. Hotels.com did a great job in confirming the refund on our behalf.

We had a nice, quick stay at Umami. It's a fresh, modern little place with a nice staff. Not far from downtown/beach. The pool is smaller than it looks in the photos and the sun beds are reserved for the rooms they are in front of, so there are really only four lounge chairs.
Overall it was a nice stay.

Umami is in a great central location - but quite part of town. Nicely designed. Not real nature and the pool is quite small - but the place is perfect. Clean, amazing design and wonderful service. Great air conditioning.
The staff helped me with my phone that had a battery problem and fixed my suite case that had a broken week. Overall great stay!!

The hotel was nice but much smaller than the pictures show. The premier garden suite was nice but the shower is too small and gets water all over the floor, the tub sits right in front of the balcony door so it was hard to get around it. Breakfast was good, drinks by the pool was nice and not over priced. The pool is very small. The staff was friendly. Location is a bit sketchy.

This property was pretty good. The drinks were affordable and breakfast was decent. On my first day of getting breakfast though, it was unfortunate that there was a dead roach on my fruit plate, kind of killing my appetite. The rooms are clean and the maids are nice. Didn’t use the pool, but a lot of people seemed to enjoy it. It is in a neighborhood and not as convenient to a lot of things in puerto viejo, despite it seeming close to everything on the map. Tuktuks were extremely cheap and efficient and it was easy to get around.

The staff was very friendly, able to answer questions and constantly cleaning. The area is walkable to the main strip in Puerto Viejo. My friend and I were concerned before we arrived because questions about a shuttle took over a week for a response, but everything was fine once we got there.

There was a power outage in town for about 4 hours. There was no backup generator, but we were still able to get breakfast.

My room wasn’t available until after well after check-in. I sat by the pool in the bar and got bit by a mosquito and was bit again the next morning when by the pool. The only two bites I got in my ten days in Costa Rica and I contracted Dengue. Use bug spray here!!!

The hotel is down dark residential streets and not safe for walking.

The accommodations were nice but service was lackluster. Not good for a solo traveler.

We absolutely loved staying at the Umami Hotel! It was extremely clean. Everything smelled fresh from the linens to the towels. We had an amazing breakfast every morning with fresh fruit and local cuisine. The service was spectacular! The front desk was very helpful for all our needs even ordering dinner from local restaurants to be delivered to the hotel. We had massages during our stay also and they were heavenly. Our time at Umami was quiet and relaxing but a close enough walk to everything we wanted to do. We enjoyed every minute of it!!

AC Lacking in “ 2 bedroom apartment”

Staff was very nice. The place is nice and quiet. However, not worth paying premium for two bedroom apartment as the living room is NOT air conditioned. Given the oppressive heat it renders this extra space useless. TV is only in living room not the bedrooms so that pretty much means no TV. To make matters worse the bedroom AC units are small and can barely cool the rooms enough to barely sleep comfortably.

The hotel has become dated since the pictures that can be found on hotels.com website. The property overall was not very clean. The rooms however were okay on the cleanliness side. The room we had was spacious. We would not come back, the price is not worth what you get in return.

We did however, appreciate the early check in and service for drinks by the pool.

Pool is basically a plunge pool and nothing more. It was too full so skimmers weren't working properly and the sump cover wasn't even attached which is poor Health & Safety.

We loved Puerto Viejo most out of our entire stay in Costa Rica. Honestly, if we went again not sure we would go for somewhere with a pool as the beach is so close and so nice. Costa Rica for us was not a chill by the pool kind of holiday but rather a go explore!!
