I wanted to have high hopes for this property but was left disappointed. I will say, The property is pretty, clean and they do offer fun activities/ menu changes and nice live music while you enjoy dinner /beverages. The beach access is also very beautiful. The staff is friendly but we found that they were inattentive, and forgetful. The first room we had, smelled so heavy of chlorine it irritated my skin. The outside lights on the deck shined all night through the curtains directly into our bedroom and you couldn’t turn them off. This made it almost impossible to sleep as well as The fan remote stopped working. The ceiling fan is the only source of cooling in the room. After texting and waiting for a response for new batteries, my husband had to go down to the front desk in the middle of the night. The Security officer assisted. There was also a bird living in the outside corner that moved/pecked all night long. My husband had upgraded to a frog suite the next night. It was very pretty but again the whole night long a non stop knocking came from the upstairs room deck which left me with another sleepless night.

It’s a wonderful property with beautiful green lush gardens on the beach. The positive energy in this hotel is not something you can buy and they have it. It’s very relaxing and fun place to be. Will gladly go back again. Breakfast was delicious and with many options and the room we stayed as was very comfortable. Not all rooms are the same so just check that it’s a good choice for you before booking.

The beds aren't that comfortable. The properties location is great!

For the rooms that don't have AC it would be nice if the owner would provide additional fans or Give the option of additional fans at check in.

We were in ocean breeze room and the thought of the additional locked door at the bottom of the stairs is nice except you can reach your hand though and open it without a key. Maybe have a lock that needs a key on both sides.

Overall, the location, breakfast, staff, and general atmosphere of the hotel were excellent. It truly feels like a diamond in the rough and that’s part of what makes it so special. Being surrounded by jungle, with black sand beaches right across the road, is an incredible experience. The amount of wildlife and nature you encounter is unforgettable.

Our cabin was on the smaller side. It worked for the two of us, but space was tight, and having a car to store some luggage made a big difference. Without that, it may have felt cramped for a longer stay.

The in-room amenities were fairly basic, but this was offset by the quality of the breakfast, which was delicious and offered a nice variety of options.

The staff really stood out, friendly, welcoming, and happy to share local recommendations, which added a lot to our experience.

Breakfast was the best part, parking right across for free, and can take a Tuk tuk taxi into town for just 4000 colones or drive yourself as it’s 10 min away. It is secluded to playa Negra so if you don’t have a car it’s not as convenient but luckily we did! Staff is awesome and helpful. Food is well priced and drinks as well.

Loved property itself and location/rooms \"floorplans\", but for the price, expect a few more things to work smoothly. For example, the outside door was broken, and when \"fixed\", became even more unusable - this was not fixed entire trip. The coffee is not in the room but outside - never enough, always cold, and impossible to pump. The door has no handle on inside and doesn't stay closed unless you lock. The pillows and mattress are old and worn out - had better in a budget hotel in CR. The mosquito net doesn't stay on/close, so purely decorative. The shower switch doesn't work so you have very little water coming from the top. The electricity goes out frequently, and with no power back up, the fan switches off - given no AC, it is quite uncomfortable to sleep at night and gets very hot. Finally, and worst offense (among others), the internet in the room NEVER worked - had to go outside to work or work in the lobby of hotel. Oh, and the outside lights were not possible to switch on/off - only staff could do it. One night it was pitch dark, I texted and even told one of the employees about it, but nothing was done until I asked again the next day. There were positive things (and many), but the issues above and then some, make you upset as for the daily price charged, especially for the area, I expect far better.

The hotel was pretty good, my room was ‘cute’. I would stay there again but would also be happy to check out other options. I loved being right on the beach. However, the pool was small and literally right at the restaurant so it was hard to relax and enjoy the pool. The front desk staff were great but a couple of the wait staff could use a little improvement. The food was decent but really large portions. It is also an easy 10-15 minute bike ride into Puerto Viejo

Properly well located, in front of Playa Negra Beach. Have wonderful gardens and friendly staff. Our room was nice, but had transparent ceiling were sun heated really fast, making hot to be. Had no air conditioning.
Recommend make sure the room you choose will comply with your needs.

The property has a guard that is there in the evening and helped us get on our way with fresh fruit and banana bread the kitchen prepared for us for our early departure at 5 am!

Was close to Puerto Viejo’s busy area but nice to be away from the hustle of that. Enjoyed being able to retire to a quiet space with a restaurant that included breakfast and options for lunch and dinner too!

I’d love for this to be a solid five star review for a lovely, peaceful place on a gorgeous stretch of Caribbean beach… but it’s not quite that.
This is NOT AN ADULTS-ONLY hotel. Despite that claim all over their website and and Expedia, during our four days there, there were lots of kids of all ages. We were looking forward to a quiet getaway and booked this place for a lot more than other places… and quickly realized that children *are* allowed in the restaurant, the pool, and the beach. Apparently, just no one under 16 (actually ~15) can stay in the rooms. OK, except these areas were central to the hotel – most of the rooms are built around the restaurant.
We give serious thanks, though, as they did move us to a private bungalow area near the beach, which was great. It was nothing but the ROAR of the surf and amazing bird calls, all while we lay in hammocks and sipped cocktails! Overall, the place is so lovely! The food and drinks are fantastic, the rooms (even without a/c) are a little rustic but lovely. We saw so much wildlife – sloths, poison frogs, lizards, beach crabs, etc.– and the site is right next to this perfect stretch of dark sand beach with some *serious* surf.
It was a slice of heaven, and we’d even consider going back, though there are other great places in the area. We especially want to thank the staff who were superb – especially Diana, who is THE BEST and set the stage for the best of this place. Our last few days at Banana Azul were simply EXCELLENT.

We had an upper floor room with an open air balcony overlooking the ocean, and a ground floor room with a massive bath tub! We ate many meals at the wonderful hotel restaurant. Amazing stay. I traveled with 2 other young women (ages 21,21,20) and we felt incredibly safe the entire time. We ended up staying in the banana house, which is actually a seperate villa across a little road from the main part of the hotel, however it was gated, and this gate could be locked. The apartment itself was also gorgeous. The property is one of the few at this price range with a connecting beach, being on playa negra. It is around a 5 minute ride (15 minute walk) from puerto viejo city center. There is a market at the hotel that sells groceries and cheaper lunch meals. Furthermore down the street there is a soda (which is a “hometown” restaurant in costa rica) which offers cheaper food as puerto viejo and costa rica is a bit expensive. Included breakfast is AMAZING. You have multiple options plus included coffee and a daily juice. We will be back!! Not to mention the staff is amazing, particularly Diana was very helpful. This place is truly a gem and I would recommend it 10x over.

I’ve debated whether to review this property but decided it might help others. I booked it because it is right on the beach and those places are scarce in CR. And that was great. Steps to a beach with chairs and loungers and service from the hotel for drinks and food. The restaurant was good and the people were generally nice. I got a massage and it was great. But the room was awful. I was in red frog. It was dank and dark and smelled musty, towels sometimes smelled mildewy. I chose an air conditioned room on purpose thinking it would mean a well-sealed room without mosquitos - and AC. But there were gaps under doors so mosquitos could get in. There was a hole in a window pane that they covered after i asked them to - they hadn’t noticed it. There was a mosquito net but it was open down one side so sorta useless. The bathroom was not included in the a/c. The room was right next to road with very noisy truck traffic. There was apparently a sewer issue because there was sometimes a terrible smell. I spent the first evening looking for other places to stay but sucked it up because I was so happy about the beach and would spend little time in the room anyway. Just be aware that the place isn’t as nice as the photos imply - it’s like a musty lake cabin.

The hotel was definitely not what I expected. The room was very small with a king bed and a twin close by. This made it very difficult to navigate the room. I booked for 3 people. There is no closet space in the room which means our bags also had to be on the floor next to the beds.

Due to the rain, the room was very moist and that made our towels smell like mildew. I asked to switch the towels and the house keeper only switched out one.

Lastly, the staff in the breakfast area was really friendly and the food was pretty good. Oh and I forgot to mention, this hotel is not adult only. There were children on the resort, eating in the breakfast area, etc. They were well behaved, but one of the reasons why I chose this hotel was because it was advertised as Adult only.

The cost does not live up to the experience.

Stayed for 8 days. Food is mild in taste; breakfast not varied. Service inconsistent. Single armed security guard placed at front entrance in the evening. There is no security guard placed at back entrance which is exposed to road, houses and beach. The beach is, like at of Costa Rica, not owned by the hotel. Therefore, it is frequently filled with expatriates and children and not hotel guests. Beware that the hotel does little to nothing to police that and you will find yourself, despite being a paying guest, without a lounge chair. The rooms are noisy and you can hear the guests in the adjacent rooms talking and snoring.The shower is great and the hotel is close to the town. Overall, I would not stay there again. The cost does not match the experience.

Front desk check in experience not good at all. Waited over an hour for room to be ready. Told previous guest had a late check-out and would let us know when ready. Waited in restaurant within view of desk repeatedly checking . More than an hour later checked again. There had been a change of staff and previous person did not inform the next staff person we were waiting, who then rushed through room and facilities instructions. Just happened to find out late into the second day we should have been offered a welcome drink and beach towels.
Booked a basic room, which was smaller than expected, but adequate. (think beach bungalow) No TV as advertised. Ceiling fan, and portable floor fan, no air conditioning, but no AC was fine for us. Mattress uncomfortably soft for our taste, saggy in spots and one of the pillows had an unpleasant smell. The bathroom tile grouting could use cleaning. Other wise the housekeeping staff did a good job every day.
Except for the check-in experience the staff was great, especially Maria Jose, Milena, Ketsi ,and Oscar.
Would recommend as a budget conscious, quiet, easy going beach front, adult only hotel with good food, drinks and wonderful staff. Pura Vida.😊

Great hotel but not great for groups

I will start by saying that the hotel is beautiful. The facilities look great, the service was top-notch and the location was perfect. It wasn’t too far from the town, but far away enough to feel like you weren’t in the town, it was just a short bike ride or drive over. The only unfortunate part of the stay is that it is a small hotel and not great for groups or friends. Quiet hours start pretty early and you will get a knock on your door for talking after 10 PM due to the older crowd that is there. There was no music being played or parties being had, just conversation in our rooms and we were asked to whisper, which is not a great experience on vacation. The other guests were up and active well before 6 AM waking us up every day we were there, but the same rules don’t apply to the guests being “loud” in the early morning as they do at night.

We only got to stay at Hotel Banana Azul just one night but had a very nice time. We came in late and was greeted by Genesis at the reception. She made us feel right at home and showed us to our bungalow on the other side of the property. We opted to have breakfast in the shared dining area and were helped by Maria. Food was wonderful and it was very pleasant chatting with Maria who gave us some helpful travel recommendations for the Viejo and Cahuita Beach areas. We couldn't stay a second night on account of all the rooms were already booked. Too bad! But, we will definitely come back to Hotel Banana Azul next time we're in the area.

The room was open air with lots of bugs! The net over the bed was a joke, it would have made it impossible to sleep and would have covered the head of maybe one person ! The bathroom is open air along the top 18 inches to the main staircase 😳! The holler suite was very rustic with no place to put our suitcases, we had to keep them on the patio closed up! Our view and patio was very nice. The room very very very small with no way to keep mosquitoes out! Location was good staff was nice

The breakfast was great. Lunches and dinners were delicious. They have a beautiful area to dine in, multiple bars, cool fire pit, lots of little nooks and crannies to chill in, and they are right on the beach, you can order right from the beach and receive your food and drinks without leaving Paradise, which is absolutely phenomenal.
Definitely worth the stay, will be back next time I'm in Costa Rica.

I felt relaxed and safe. I liked the space that my suits offered at the Brisas. My only regreet is that there was no fridge. However, this did not prevent me from returning on my next trip to Puerto Viejo.

It was an overall great stay. The beach is so close in comparison to huge resorts. The food is great but unfortunately the kitchen does close early. You need to find places to eat or stock up on snacks if it’s after 9:00. The staff is great!!!!! Make sure to check if your room has air conditioning. Ours did not have one but our stay was in October which is considered their winter. It rained at night which helped keep the room cool. I can’t imagine staying there without an air conditioner in the summer time. It would truly be miserable. Other than that it is a great place with a wonderful staff! I will definitely go back.

Cons: your experience will vary widely depending on which room you are in. We stayed in 3 areas: ocean room, villa 2, and the las brisas apartment down the beach from the main property. The ocean room gets very hot--it does not have AC and is like a sauna during the day. The villa was lovely--you have a private pool, the space includes a kitchen and great AC. The las brisas apartment was terrible--it was moldy, dingy, and has a bad sewer smell. Out of all the rooms, the las brisas apt was the very worst--we didn't actually book it, the hotel put us there after they gave the room we actually booked away to someone else.

We are a retired couple. Banana Azul’s staff couldn’t have been more accommodating throughout our stay. On a daily basis many staff members restated their desire to provide whatever we desired and to make our stay even more enjoyable. Morning coffee set up just outside our cottage & a full complimentary breakfast of choices was fantastic. They even offer laundry services. We loved our visit and hope to return.

The property was clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It was close to the beach and they had chairs and food service on the beach. The only thing that wasn't great was the mattress. It was close to perfect.

Great location right on the beach. Not Adults only! They were many young children during our stay which was a bit disappointing. Prices also seemed a bit high for food and drinks for what you got. We were better off eating out. Overall a nice stay a great beach.

This place was amazing.. the pictures Travelocity has doesnt do the place justice. The staff soooo friendly they go abvoe and beyond..not just one or two but all the staff. They have a turtle pond to see turtles and fish as well as frogs. Their cat oreo is so sweet and a fun addition for guests. We were able to see about 4 sloths on the property. The maintenence staff always kept an eye and then showed the guests where they were making the experience really nice. Not one problem w this place.. beautiful lovely, chill, fun things to see, great suggestions of what to do from staff.. we really loved this place and had a great experience. They furthermore provided a refreshing welcome drink upon arrival and a token for another drink when we were ready.

We were genuinely sad we only had one night to stay at Banana Azul! Check in was quick and efficient and friendly. The fresh coconut was a lovely treat. The Howler Suite was charming and the view magical. The food in the restaurant was delicious. I highly recommend Banana Azul if you want an authentic Costa Rica experience that’s right on the Playa Negra beach. I’ll definitely be returning.

This is a beautiful hotel. Beautiful wood, restaurant and bar and the lush jungle landscape is just beautiful. Loved the pool also. The standout about this place though is the staff for sure. Young crew, very good manners and helpful. Be sure to tip them, they deserve it. We’ll return one day! We stayed in the Brisas cabin and it was awesome. Note that most rooms do not have air conditioning so if you require air conditioning make sure you book a room with them that has it. Love Banana Azul! The shuttle service and your booking counter just outside their entrance was so helpful. We use Caribe Shuttle to get there from San Jose.

No shower water for 1.5 days & sewage smell

We enjoyed the food, the resort, the beach and the staff …however we are NOT pleased that for a day and a half we had no WATER in the shower. We were very patient & even went to the store to purchase bottled water to shower and flush the toilet!

We were told that a part had to be purchased for the bathroom and the maintenance staff came to fix the issue around 3pm the next day! That’s a whole day and a half!! And the only compensation offered was 20% off of our FOOD bill? That’s $35. What does food have to do with no shower?!!! Wow, we should have been compensated for the ROOM not the food. We paid for a hotel… not a hostel… Also I emailed customer service about the matter while at the check out counter….and here it is 8 days later and NO ONE responded back to me!!!

Also, twice we walked in the room and there was a strong sewer smell. We traced the smell to a drip coming from the ceiling. We thought it was the AC, but saw that it was coming from the ceiling and the restroom of the unit above us!! Gross!

Suite- Tropical 9 needs to be renovated and the way management handled the situation was extremely disrespectful and awful. We paid an average of $148 each night and could not use the shower for a day and a half.. There was no apology, no response to my email or even an appropriate compensation. $35 off of the food is a slap in the face. They should be ashamed!!!!

Our stay at Banana Azul was wonderful. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was very nice. We loved the beautiful gardens and especially the seating at the beach where the onshore breeze was so comfortable and the view was so lovely.

I can't say enough good things about this place, and the people who take the time and effort to take care of us.
Service and grounds amazing. The one thing you will need to get use to is the fact there isn't any AC on the premises.
Looking forward to staying here again. :)

Great location, steps from the beach! We loved the place, but the second room was extremely small, which made it uncomfortable. The breakfast was excellent with a different menu every day. I would like to extend a special thank you to Jordan, who provided outstanding service and recommendations.

This was our first trip to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. We've been coming to Costa Rica for over 20 years. We loved it and the hotel and staff were wonferful. The hotel's restaurant had great menu options with breakfast included. Be sure to confirm if your room has AC. Not all rooms do. Black sand beach. We'd definitely stay here again..

Banana Azul Beach resort

This laid back beach resort is ideal for 'get away from it all' holiday makers. The fabulous black sand beach is just at the end of the well maintained gardens. and it stretches for miles.
The room we stayed in was slightly small. (as was the pool) - but Air con worked great and we needed it. Shower was powerful. I'd go for the larger suite next time.
Try the tenderloin steak - one of the best I've had.
Cocktails to die for. - and service was excellent.
