This historic hotel is in excellent condition. My room and the common areas were spotlessly clean and very well maintained, and the building is 150 years old! I absolutely loved my room, and the staff were all so nice and helpful. Parking was easy and safe. I can't say enough about this charming, historic gem! I've already booked a return visit.

What a wonderful hotel! So much charm and character with all the comfort and amenities of a \"modern\" hotel. Our room in a repurposed 1800s home across the parking lot from the hotel proper was small, but quiet and lovely. The complementary breakfast was delicious, and the the vibe and bluegrass music in the \"Saloon\" was so fun and lively. Also, Kim, who greeted us at the front desk, is such a helpful, delightful person.

We stayed at the Holbrooke for a birthday/Valentines getaway weekend and were thoroughly impressed by the service and the amenities! The tasting menu special dinner course was phenomenal and one of the best meals we’ve ever experienced. The ambience of the hotel and the local area was so charming and unique. The only minor hiccup we had was the original room we were placed in was right next to a side exit door that slammed very loudly whenever someone entered or exited. Because of that, we slept very poorly the first night due to guests going in and out at all hours. When we asked the front desk the next morning if there was any possibility to change rooms, we were at first told the hotel was fully booked so they were unable to move us. We asked once more after dinner if there was anything they could do and that time we were told they actually did have another room, but it was an upgrade from our current room and we would have to pay the difference in price. We were admittedly a bit disappointed to have to pay to change rooms, especially after the front desk disclosed they hear the complaint about the slamming door fairly often from guests placed near it. But upon checking out, we were very pleasantly surprised to hear we would actually not be charged for the room change so we have zero complaints overall! We will definitely come back and stay at the Holbrooke again! Thank you for an amazing experience and the wonderful service!

Staff was welcoming especially the front desk lady (sorry I forgot her name). The place is a wonderful mix of original old time and updated amenities. We ate in the restaurant and had the chef’s dinner with the parings. It was delicious and generous. Our waiter was attentive and full of knowledge about the building, food and wine. A great getaway.

There was no bar. No closet. No place to store clothing. The room was tiny. The sink was at the foot of the bed, not in the bathroom. When we checked in, I happily mentioned that I was familiar with the hotel as I had several very nice previous stays, and Kim, the receptionist said, “we don’t know who you are and we don’t keep track of who stays here.” This was on Christmas Day! The next day, it was raining heavily, and when I asked for a hotel umbrella, another receptionist told me they don’t have umbrellas “because people would steal them.” Hello, here’s a missed marketing opportunity and a guest insult all at once. My daughter owns a ranch in Penn Valley and I live in France, until this visit, the Holbrooke was my go to place to stay when I visit. Not anymore.

The radio was a nice touch to sitting on the private deck in the sunshine; surprisingly, there was no television available. Hotel employees were friendly and competent, although there were none anywhere in the lobby when we checked out an hour earlier before the deadline. Grass Valley is a wonderful walking city and we felt refreshed upon leaving. Hotel restaurant looked good but the menu was a bit expensive while the entrees didn't excite.

This hotel is excellent. It’s got the charm and sophistication that you would expect from a great boutique hotel and more. We booked two rooms for four guests and it was cozy, clean and the decor was everything we’d been looking for. It’s steps from great food and an awesome bar right on the premises. The gift shop on property is amazing. I spent a lot! It was really hard not to. Enjoy the Holbrook, we will be back many times I am sure.

Not a whole lot to do in GV, but we stayed at the Holbrooke as my wife is a fan of anything paranormal. The hotel is immaculate, well-kept, and worth staying at. The only downside to GV is that everything closes early. 9 PM is the last call for dinner on a Friday night, and we ended up with pizza, which was very good. There are a few bars that stay open later. Funny thing, our room had an old radio on a table. After check-in, when we got to the room, I turned on a radio that was on a table and tried to tune to any station, and all I heard was static. We went out and returned to our room at about 1 AM. When we opened the door, the radio was playing like old 1920s music, clear. Also, there is a tall dresser with four books on it. In the morning, one of the books was pulled out. We will stay there again.

Don’t stay in room 22

The historical ambiance and restaurant/bar here is wonderful but we were given what has to qualify as the worst room to stay in. We got room 22 in the carriage house which is right inside the front door and the windows overlook directly onto the front porch where people sit and gather. If not for the curtains we would be on full view - and the curtains didn’t fully cover the entire window so we had to be creative to keep it covered completely. The front door did not close softly and we heard slams throughout the early morning and late evening from the other guests coming and going. We were not getting a good nights sleep so decided to leave a day early after being there for 3 nights. Unfortunately due to their policy, we got no refund for that last night so they were able to make double on it I’m sure, with a replacement guest.

We’ve stayed at the Holbrooke Hotel many times while visiting family in grass valley. The building itself is charming with a lot of character and the rooms simple, clean, and elegant. The bar is stand out with always excellent cocktails (check out whatever cocktail is on draft) but the food is the best in the area. You’re also on the heart of the few blocks that make up downtown grass valley.

The room was good - clean and luxurious bed, excellent lighting, clean towels, soap and lotion provided, the shower curtain looked mildewy. The amenity fee covered water bottles and wifi. Onsite dining options are dinner only, by reservation, with an abbreviated menu. Very loud music, loud bar/cocktail hour action. Breakfast is really bad - brewed coffee and/or tea, no juice, and a extremely limited number of scones, by 8.30, only 1 was left. in-room coffee cups were dirty.

The main hotel is lovely. I got places out in the carriage house, separate from the main hotel. Everyone someone ran water or flushed a toilet it sounded as if waves were crashing on my head. The people next door were definitely on drugs and up all night. I tried the front desk but no one there to answer at 3:30am - shocker. Then to top it off- 6:30 am recycling and trash trucks right outside my window. Needless to say I got zero sleep. Was hoping for something amazing. This was NOT it.

The Holbrooke is a beautiful, old property that holds a lot of history and charm. It’s within walking distance to all kinds of great shopping. It was very clean and comfortable. I had the Alaskan cod for dinner and it was the best I ever had. Hats off to the chef. If there is a down side, because of it age, it is thin walls and creaky floors. You can hear your neighbors. Luckily mine were as quiet as can be. Other than that, its charm is apparent when you drive up. A lovely stay for sure.

Charming and historic hotel, staff was helpful, the town is full of interesting shops and friendly locals and good restaurants. The beds were cozy and the room clean. The area of course is naturally beautiful as well. We were located in the carriage house, behind the main hotel, which was like being in a little house, perfectly fine. The only downside for us was that it was somewhat loud- you could hear the water in the pipes and the people in the next room coughing and talking. There were no amenities in the room either, which was ok but normally I would like a way to boil water. (electric kettle, microwave or coffee maker) Next time I will stay in the main hotel, as I heard that was provided. But we did thoroughly enjoy our stay and would definitely stay again.

This hotel was beyond amazing. We’ve visited before for drinks but never stayed. We needed a place last minute on Christmas Day and luckily they had a room. It was so beautiful and quaint. Loved it. We will stay from now on when in town.
