Great spot

Great spot but be prepared to walk as the main street in front of the hotel was closed off to traffic. Checkin was easy, Bar staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Great location with an abundance of street food, coffee and dining choices. A kids park just outside the front door, provided endless entertainment to kids and adults.

The location of the hotel is ideal, it is on the Main Street with all restaurants and bars. Although it is a central location, the street was EXTREMELY loud until about 4am. The room was so hot and we could not leave the window open due to the noise. The bed was very uncomfortable and the shared bathrooms weren’t the cleanest.

We had two rooms; each small; but sufficient. Bathrooms very compact; showers bit small if you are taller person. They offered a shared space on the 4th floor with full kitchen and lounge area. There is no Elevator for luggage etc. There was no TV in the rooms; and no glasses either...you had to go to the 4th floor to get one if you wanted one. The staff here was cordial but not nearly as friendly and helpful as we had experienced at other locations. We did have dinner in their restaurant; and it was very good.

My room in guesthouse was on third floor and was spacious and clean. My room did not have a private bathroom, so I had use of two shared bathrooms at end of corridor. The shower doors on showers in both bathrooms were broken, doors were basically hanging off their hinges, one was so bad shower was unusable, other one broken enough for door not to close, so water leaked onto floor. There was a hole in ceiling above shower in one bathroom. There were very few places available in Akureyri, so prices were inflated and for £123 per night, this accommodation was appalling. I was staying 2 more nights on my return to Akureyri and had unfortunately paid in advance on a non-refundable rate, thankfully only £65 per night this time. I spoke to one of the owners on my return to property and showed her photos of the broken showers and hole in ceiling to give them a chance to fix things before submitting a review. She said she would get her husband to look at it, but when I left 2 days later, the bathrooms were still in the same appalling state, I can only assume they are not really interested in fixing these issues. The owner seemed shocked at the state of the bathrooms when I showed her the photos, but there is no excuse for owners not to know about this, even if other guests did not report it, what about the cleaning staff, what about the owners inspecting their own premises once in a while? Suggests they don't care about their guests. Would not recommend and would not stay again.

Pros : area was great. Free parking nearby (not on site). Bars and shops right out front. Easy to find. Good comuunal space and kitchen

Cons : blood drops on my bedding. Shared bathrooms at end of hall were not clean. Shower doors were hanging off the hinges. No elevator. Very loud. Could hear toilets flushing from my room, and very heavy doors closing repeatedly.

It was a great experience. Only complaint is the outlet is on one side and above the bed. No place to put the iPhone charger unless no one is sleeping on the bed. Other than that minor inconvenience, its a great Guesthouse!

The hotel is in a busy section of the city, so parking is a little hard. But it's very close to the botanic garden and the famous church. The receptionist helped us out getting a table at the restaurant owned by Apotek. The food was pretty good. We had a good breakfast at a nearby bakery a few buildings down the street.

More like a hostel, walls were thin and you could hear other rooms. Shower is a walk down the hallway. Blinds did not block all the light so visiting in the summer be aware of this and maybe bring an eye mask. Comfy bed though and nice staff!

Great location close to a lot of restaurants. Free street parking was great and the owner was very friendly when she met us upon arrival. We couldn’t get hot water to work in our room shower, but the shared showers got really hot and were great. For the price, it was a great stay!

Unfortunately the property was noisy. The toilets flushing in the building were loud and the common room above our bedroom was noisy with people walking around on wooden floors. Should have realised by seeing the basket of earplugs on the reception desk.

Overall a great place to stay. Friendly staff (and cat). Quiet. The kitchen area was good as long as other guests cleaned up. On nice warm days there is a patio with views to the west. I stayed there 4 nights (with private bathroom) and was lucky to park the car on the street right outside during the night and weekend. The street has only 15 min parking between 10am and 4pm Mon-Fri. Many stores and restaurant.

Perfect location, great for a family

The 3BR penthouse unit was perfect for our family of 5. The apt was larger than anywhere else we stayed in Iceland. The location was perfect, right on the main street, easy to walk to shops and restaurants. The living room was enormous and let us spread out while relaxing. We stayed only 1 night but would have loved to stay more. The town of Akureyri is a great location to stay to take day trips to Husavik and Lake Myvatn.

Perfect place to say downtown

What an amazing find in Akureyri! Location could not be better, the penthouse was roomy, tastefully furnished, quiet, and well equipped for our stay as a family of two adults two teens. Daniel was super helpful in recommending real, authentic places to eat and visit in the area. Everything he recommended was a homerun. You would be hard pressed to find a better urban vacation space than this.

overall good - very nice staff and very practical to be so central. It is a budget place, so don´t expect more, I think you get a lot for your money. One problem though (and it goes for all places) is that the tv sets are difficult to work and only seem to send the same programs over and over again.

Nice hotel in a very convenient location. We only stayed over night as a rest stop as we drove around Iceland in 5 days. Staff were friendly and let us check in late. The room was nice and comfortable and there was a cosy kitchen/common area upstairs. Would definitely recommend!

This location is very convenient. Since we arrived after desk was closed they had an intercom system to allow access to guesthouse. Key was available and room was clean and beds were comfortable. There were many places to eat close by. The Akureyi Church is less than a block walk. A central location with good parking close by.

Clean with convenient location

Cute little guesthouse. It was quite difficult for me to figure out parking for the hotel (it was behind it a street over), so you have to carry your luggage for a bit. Despite that, the guesthouse is conveniently located next to food, other guest houses and shops (which close quite early if you’re from the states). Only downside is two bathrooms per floor, however that never caused any issues for me.

It was a last minute booking. The room was very basic, bed & sink, but clean. Washrooms down the hall. One out of toilet paper, but that happens. Check in & out was met with a smiling greeting. Shops all around. Our timing only left us with the Bakari being open for a breakfast...which was great as most things seem to open at 11.

A great guesthouse downtown Akureyri

We stayed at the penthouse for 4 nights at the beginning of July and had a great experience. We had to contact the owners prior to our arrival and all our concerns or problems were solved fast and efficiently. The penthouse had 3 bedrooms with good beds, a living room with a television and a fully equipped kitchen. In addition there is a common room with a bigger kitchen just in front of the penthouse which can be used as well. We had a lovely stay and would definitely come again.

Well located hotel.

Stayed there in March 18 and arrived after a rather not too pleasant drive on snowed road in the North of Iceland.
Found free overnight parking (16:00 to 10:00) right in front of the hotel.
Room was clean and well insulate with good views to the main street below
Shared kitchen and living area on the top floor (no lift) was a bit of a let down from the inconsideration of the guests from not cleaning up after them. Adequate cooking utensils (although the kettle did not work) and overall an enjoyable are to relax, cook and eat.

Hotel in Downtown Akureyri

The location of this hotel is fantastic. It’s right in the middle of everything. My two issues with this hotel are: our shower didn’t drain. It was gross. Also, we arrived two days ago and the kitchen was a mess and the trash was full. The kitchen has not been cleaned once and the trash has not been taken out once. It is disgusting. If you’re not planning to use the kitchen all the time like we did, this place would be great. There are no staff at the hotel ever. There is a phone where you can call them if you need to. We decided not to regarding the shower. I’m not sure I would want to stay here again regarding the cleanliness.

Stayed here for one night but debated driving back for a seconds because it was so nice and comfy. Check in was super easy even when checking in outside of hours, had a key with our names on it in an envelope. beds comfy, room had own little sink. But the best part was the top floor kitchen and living space. Great place to have dinner and plan out the rest of our trip on the free wifi.

Room was comfortable and clean. Few things to mention about this place. There was no extra supply of toilet paper despite no room cleaning service. It wasn't a new roll to begin with. By free parking, you park at a nearby cultural center. A bit silly to advertise as if the property provides free parking. If you're carrying a lot of luggages, then it's a bit inconvenient to have to walk for 5 min. I saw staff not once during our 2 nights stay. Arrived around 5pm and the front door was locked. Rang the doorbell to have it unlocked. Saw a bunch of envelopes labeled with names and room numbers. Read the instruction to park at a cultural center. Very much a self service so I guess it's efficient.

Stayed here for one night while on trip, the front desk wasn't open but they had a call button which lets you into the premises (door is locked for security) they let us in and we found our key. Libby had a lot of information regarding whale watching and puffin tours (which helped ALOT!) right in the middle of town so plenty of shops and places to eat/ drink available. Have a common area which is clean and rooms were clean and neat. Community showers and wash room were clean! Would most definitely stay here again!

We were travelling as 2 couples and we booked the penthouse. Everything about this place was great apart from the fact that it was up 3 flights of stairs. That's what a penthouse is all about though.
The location of this place is amazing but there was some noise from the bars outside. We are not light sleepers so it didn't really bother us.
Would definitely choose this accommodation again.

The location was awesome. Place was also large enough for our family of 5. Downside was that our penthouse was on 4th floor and there was no elevator. Also, because of the location people were partying all through the night so it was little difficult to sleep. We still liked the location, right in the middle of downtown.

Better than expected/Good value for money

Stayed for 2 nights after a long trip from Reykjavik and was happy with the room size, space and affordability. Nice kitchen/dining area fully stocked with utensils to prepare food. I didn't see much of the management during my stay but that didn't matter, I have no complaints. Staying here was far better than hostels with bunk beds and little privacy. Sure you can hear the taps running in the room next door and the doors slam very loudly but ear plugs solved this for me. There is no lift in the property so you will have to lug your bags up the stairs and there are only 2/3 showers available per floor so showering in the evenings or getting up slightly earlier is a way around this.

I would not reccommend this hotel. I plugged in my hairdryer and the circuit tripped for the whole floor. There was not one single staff person there to ask for help. Thankfully my boyfriend knew how to fix it! This is a glorified hostel. Shared bathrooms...only 2 per floor and the drains were so slow that the water backs up and almost spills over the edge (very uncomfortable)...its a walk up (very difficult when you're on the 3rd floor with heavy suitcases)

We checked in at the listed time and found envelopes of keys at the closed front desk. We had to call to find out what room number we were assigned. In fact, the entire stay we never saw an employee of the large guesthouse. A pro was that we were given a room with private bathroom but a con was that the room's curtains were insufficient and there was some street noise. Overall it was decent enough. The fourth floor has a kitchen and dining area with tv and balcony.

Can't Recommend It!

So disappointed! Absent owner/management, never saw anyone in our two-day stay. Check-in is advertised from 4-8 p.m., not so as no one is there to greet you. No maps of the town available in lobby (using that term loosely). No info at all about the guesthouse or the town, not even restaurant recommendations. No elevator, had to lug our luggage upstairs. Tiniest room we've ever had & we travel extensively. Had to push the bed up against the heater next to the window to be able to put our luggage on the floor. Flimsy little pillows on bed. Windows are not sound-proofed, so noise from street (think drunken idiots) float up to the room. Guesthouse is on a street with restaurants, bars and a hostel. No blackout curtains, so bring your eye shades in order to sleep. Only two electrical outlets to charge phones, etc. and they're directly above the pillows on the bed. ???Bathroom is tiny & no place to set anything (private bathroom in this room). Threadbare towels. No hair-blower anywhere and really, who could you ask anyway if you were trying to find one in the guesthouse. Shower smells strongly of sulphur when you use hot water. No soap or shampoo in shower.
This place is a money-grab and is very cheaply outfitted, even though it's not cheap to stay there. Couldn't wait to leave there. The location is great, but there is no parking onsite (even though they advertise free parking).
This is not a pleasant place to stay!

Apotek Guesthouse's location is great, right in the city centre. The kitchenette is well equipped.

Great location, great property and reasonable cost

Made a last minute decision to stay here. Everything was dealt laid out. Staff was willing to accommodate our requests and were very polite. I am very glad I stayed here.
