Impressive in arrival this countryside hotel and conference centre at first glance appeals.
There is also ample parking.
Many hotels allow early check in if one arrives ahead of check in time. Moat House staff were less accommodating and seemed to have a hard and fast rule. However, when we sat in the lobby with our suitcases and backpacks half an hour ahead of check in time, they quickly and pleasantly attended to us.
The rooms are attractive but for cobwebs on the ceiling in both bedroom and bathroom as well as the bar.
The room was noisy - at night the neighbouring unit put their tv on at 3am and it stayed on. It was loud and easy to hear.
The serving staff at the included breakfast were very pleasant and ample food was available at the buffet to satisfy most palates. I prefer a bowl of hot porridge/oatmeal and they quickly and happily accommodated with a side container of honey and several rounds of toast.
The breakfast setting was surrounded by gardens and well windowed. Very beautiful.
I didn’t go 5 star as I was unimpressed by the lack of enthusiasm of the front desk staff and the cobwebs, which indicate a lack of attention, leaving one to wonder as to the overall cleanliness.
My compliments to the serving staff who more than made up for other less desirable features.
I also found the internet insecure and spotty. Had to keep signing back in after a night’s sleep and if we left the complex for an hour or so.
I would stay here again despite some of my remarks.

I booked a superior room for 2 nights with my wife. We arrived about 2.30pm and the room wasn’t ready. There was some confusion from the front desk about our later dinner reservation, the receptionist stated I didn’t have a booking and despite my assertions she didn’t really seem to believe that I had booked it months ago. She said it wasn’t recorded. She only relented when I showed her their messages to me confirming the booking. Anyway, awaiting the room we went to the bar. The staff in the bar were lovely and it was well priced for a hotel, the actual bar was a little cold. When we got into the room, I can’t say it was ‘superior’. It was a little small, cold and not well lit. There was no safe nor minibar/fridge something I would have expected for £162 per night. When I raised this at reception it wasn’t well received, the lady was polite and they did put in a room heater. Evening meal was lovely and again the staff in the bar, where we ate, were lovely and provided a great service. Breakfast on the first morning was a buffet affair and in the main was well cooked. On the second morning breakfast wasn’t as good, my wife had Eggs Benedict but the poached eggs were hard (as were mine) and the Hollandaise sauce was split, we never got the requested toast- poor show chef! The actual grounds at the hotel were beautiful and lovely to walk around the lake and close by canal. Altogether it was a nice stay but not as good as I’d expected.

Brilliant location but the dinner was mediocre and the you could feel and hear the springs in the mattress so not such a good sleep. They must have had a big rush for breakfast with most tables needing clearing. The breakfast food was cooked to order and all good. The car park was fairly empty when we arrived but filled up in the morning when all the business folk arrived.

The whole experience, two nights, was excellent. The room was very large, well fitted and although we did not housekeeping refreshment were replenished, when requested. The food was of high standard and equally matched by the service. Only criticism was poor pressure in the sink hot water tap. It was an accessible room so understand the concern of the hot tap.

Check-in was efficient and straightforward, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, the remainder of our stay did not meet expectations.

The room was very dark and poorly lit, making it feel uninviting. Paintwork on doors and woodwork had numerous large chips, giving a tired impression. The window overlooked the back of another part of the hotel, so there was no outlook at all. Housekeeping standards were concerning: we found a glasses case beside the bed from a previous guest, and the glasses provided for canned water were dirty.

Dinner was disappointing. The restaurant was so cold we had to return to our room to get jackets. The food was average and felt overpriced for the quality. Service came across as brusque rather than welcoming.

Overnight, the room was very noisy due to a loud water/sewage system which disrupted sleep.

Breakfast was equally underwhelming. The cooked breakfast was not hot, and toast was only offered after my husband had finished his meal — which itself had arrived cold. We waited over 20 minutes for tea and coffee despite asking three times. When it arrived, the cafetière was broken and there was no milk. After another 10 minutes without coffee, we left.

Checkout was purely transactional, with no enquiry about our stay.

Overall, standards of cleanliness, comfort, food and service fell short, particularly for the price.

We enjoyed our stay overall, but I did feel that some areas of the hotel are starting to look a little tired and could benefit from a refresh. For a hotel with 2 AA Rosettes, I expected a higher standard of cleanliness in certain parts of the property. Nothing major, but small details made the place feel less polished than I anticipated.

The staff were lovely and the atmosphere was welcoming — it just feels like the hotel is ready for a bit of attention to bring it back up to the level its rating suggests.

Room was excellent but whatever have you done to the dining area?!!! It used to be nice comfy chairs and (for breakfast) a relaxing and quiet atmosphere that made breakfast something to look forward to. Instead there is now ‘basic’ seating and a very echoey atmosphere that must be due in no small part to the now lack of upholstery and possibly carpet area. In short the echoey sounds made it not much better than a company cafeteria. Quite disappointing and if the hotel wasn’t so convenient and nice in other ways it might well be a case of looking elsewhere for a better breakfast dining experience.

Would have liked a cooked breakfast at 06:30, but had to settle for a continental as hot meal service does not start until 07:00, which was too late for me as I needed to leave for my appointment at 07:10.
4 pillows supplied all as hard as bricks, very uncomfortable, not a good nights sleep.
Rest of the hotel was fine from what I saw.

Located in easy reach of the M6 The Moat House should be good for an overnight stay.

Our first impression was let down in that the room allocated to us was unheated with no way of turning the radiator on. It was very cold. It seems that the heating is timed to come on periodically during the day and that the manager is the only person who can set this and the only person who knows what time it does come on. The receptionist did provide us with a free standing electric heater - which leads you to think this isn't an unusual occurrence.

The restaurant has aspirations with a fancy but not very affordable menu. Not fast food but sadly not even quick enough food, a single course took an hour to be served. The breakfast, included in our room rate, was very good.

There are lots of steps the hotel is probably not well suited to anyone with mobility problems.

There was a large wedding party the night of our stay, which was largely kept to its own areas, but does put stress on the staff we felt.

An attractive large country hotel very close to the M6. Our room was hot and quite noisy from the constant traffic on the motorway so we couldn’t open the windows to cool down. We had a couple of fans which helped but they also made some noise. There seemed to be a shortage of staff : on arrival I had to go quite a way in search of someone to check us in as the reception desk was deserted. Apparently the receptionist had been upstairs preparing a room, although it was 6pm. Our dinner in the restaurant which was very good.

Comfortable Rooms - Good Restaurants

We stayed at the Moat House on our way up north and again on our way back south. Both times were a great experience. The rooms are very comfortable with good showers - all our requests were catered to. My husband left his electric shaver behind and they are sending it back to us.
We were not looking for formal dining in the main restaurant and The Bar Lounge menu turned out to be very good - special mention on the Mackerel Rillettes starter!! Head Chef James Cracknell was sent our grateful thanks for a delicious dish. Breakfast was also very good - it's not easy to get good scrambled eggs at a buffet, but we did - both times. Can highly recommend the hotel and restaurant - we hope to return!

Loved everything about The Moat House; the house and grounds were lovely, the room had everything we needed, the food, the breakfast, bar snack and evening meal where perfect and the staff couldn't have been more pleasant.What we loved the most was all the little places you could find to just sit outside, beside the water and also that for breakfast and evening meal you were looking out onto water again.
We will definitely come again and highly recommend it. Thankyou for our stay.

Overall a good stay. Food was mostly good, cooked breakfast items were good quality. The grill night meal was excellent value and good quality, although we were told initially there were no table’s available (staff were helpful in finding us one). Reception were helpful and friendly.

Minor improvements could be made to make this hotel outstanding;
1)Too many Flies in bar area
2) pillows extremely hard
3) maintenance needed to some slabs and greenery cutting back to make it easier for disabled people
4) service at breakfast could be more attentive, although staff were friendly and helpful

We have stayed before and will be staying again as this is a very good hotel.
