This hotel is quiet, clean and safe. The parking lot had plenty of space. The staff is friendly and professional. They put out a very nice coffee bar in the am with multiple choices of teas, hot chocolate and coffee. The courtyard outside has plenty of chairs, heaters and mood lighting. Charmed in Chula Vista

We enjoyed our stay! An antidote to a corporate hotel stay: human-scale, friendly, had character & history. Great location right near Chula Vista’s downtown strip (breweries, coffee shops, restaurants, park) — an unexpected surprise full of options but still very quiet and calm. The courtyard is a nice place to chill out. Perhaps the hotel has seen better days, but if you don’t mind things being a little rough around the edges, the character is worth it. Inkeepers added a personal touch that made us feel at home.

First the room we reserved was not available because the carpets were being cleaned so we were moved from a premium room to a tiny little room that you could barely turn around in. The room was not cleaned, trash emptied or towel changed for three days and only then after we complained. The owner offered mulitple excuses none were valud. We had
stayed there before but trust me we won't stay there again.

Unexpectedly small room

It is a family run hotel. It is dated and the room is exceptionally small. There is literally no space to move, just atand. There's also no space to keep your bags. The fake knobs on the doors kept falling off. Otherwise, the bed was comfortable owners were friendly and nice area. It is a good hotel for a 1 night stay, just that be aware the 2 person room with a single bed is extremely small.

Good location, no thrill hotel

Not your traditional hotel, no full time person at desk, no breakfast or anything such as that. Did see some coffee and hot chocolate packs, but that was all, but plenty of places to eat within walking distance.

Hotel was clean, rooms on the small size. We got a King size room and was not a traditional size room. Overall it was great for us as we had an event nearby. 7-11 Across the street if you need to buy snack or drinks.

Karen was wonderful. She greeted us and gave us a bigger room for free! I love the art deco design and the San Diego theme. Each room has a different historic designation. The outdoor patio and gazebo are wonderful places to relax. The hotel is within walking distance of restaurants, bars and a park. Bravo!

Such a delightful place to stay. I loved the secured patio! The neighbourhood is full of great places to eat. The staff went out of their way to be helpful. The bed was super comfortable and I really appreciated the cotton sheets! Will definitely be back!

I would not recommend this place to any family and friends. It is family owned so the whole family lives on the premises. Its not a bed and breakfast so wasn't expecting to check out with the whole family in their pajamas walking around the lobby.

This place is very cute! It's not your typical hotel. It was a built in the 1930s, so the rooms and bathrooms are smaller and the hallways narrow. It is clean, quiet, and the front desk was very nice. The only thing we can remotely complain about is when they are full, the parking lot is a tight squeeze, but that is to be expected in Chula Vista so it has nothing to do with how great this place is! My partner and I will definitely be staying there again when we go visit our friends. Thank you!!!

Was not allowed to stay because I have a small 4 pound dog. Maybe in small fine print there was something stating no dogs but I didn’t see it. They need to make it more visible. Got there with it being 100 degrees outside and was sent away. Not dog or pet friendly at all. 100 dollars non refundable for nothing and left in the sun to search for another place. Found a better place for cheaper but what a loss. Make your rules and regulations more visable…

We did not have a lot of interaction with the staff. However, when we did it was pleasant. The property was an older property which was nice not a big 100 room (all the same) place but it was showing its age a little. I would stay again based on location and everything being walkable.

It is a historic 1930s hotel, so rooms and bathrooms are small. However the owner of as very welcoming and everything was clean! It was a little expensive but we booked last minute, and we were happy.

This is a wonderful place to stay in Chula Vista. You are just down the street from many restaurants and shops (easy to walk to) and the hotel is wonderful. The owners were excellent and the rooms were adorable. I loved the historic nature of this hotel and would definitely stay again when I'm in the area.

The host & owners Karen & her lovely mother. Very friendly & welcoming, they would go out of their way to accommodate my experience in this very charming delightful 1930's, Chula Vista's FIRST hotel. I was booked in the Mission de Alcala. Each room had their own plaque on door w/the history behind it in the room for guest to take back some memories of this Delightful hotel.
I Highly recommend staying here. It was clean, comfortable and lots charm from the 1930's Art Deco period. I would certainly come back & stay here when visiting my brother & his family.

Save your money........check in at Motel 6.

Way over-priced! You would think, for $136/night there would be a microwave and small refrigerator in the rooms. Nope. No breakfast either. The water in the bathtub was either too cold or too hot. Could not control the temperature. The bar of soap was tiny.....only lasted me 3 days. The only amenity was free parking. I will not return to El Primero

Poor management and Poor conditions

I try to stay positive but unfortunately there isn’t much positive about this place. The doors are (and always remain) locked. The lights were off and no one at the receptions desk most times. When i checked in, they walked me to my room with the key card only to realize they were walking into an already occupied room. Turns out there was another guest staying there who was assigned the same room. The owner had to come correct the mistake in the system. so I patiently waited 45 minutes while they went back and forth about everything and sorted it out. They make it known that the room was just cleaned and is an upgrade to a king size bed due to the inconvenience. There was no king size bed. As a matter of fact it was a full size. I know it’s an older building but never did I expect what I was walking into. The carpet was filthy and crusty. Wouldn’t dare walk barefoot. The windows were all open I’m guessing an attempt to let out some of the muggy musty smell hardwired into room. Rust and dirt everywhere. Bathtub was so moldy and tiles were falling off. TV had 1 working channel. Fridge was hot(it was plugged in). Doors don’t close properly. walls paper thin. No one at reception ever again. Not even to checkout.

This was a historic boutique hotel within walking distance of restaurants, pubs, bars and coffee houses. The hotel was very clean and inviting. The hostess Karen was very hospitable and gave us some pointers. There is a very nice courtyard to enjoy a drink or just sit and relax with beautiful plants and lighting. I definitely have found a little gem to book if visiting San Diego. I can’t wait to return.
