Bad start! No AC on a very hot week window only opened 2” due to a bar across it restricting itfrom opening, WiFi did not connect too far from router. No kettle in room can only purchase coffee from hotel at €3! Asked reception for a fan and told no! Explained we were told room had WiFi and need it to do some work. They said it does reach them rooms! We asked for and room and eventually got a room nearer the front of hotel. Also they found us a fan But the hotel staff use the area under our window for smoking so we had that drifting into the room! Luxurious rooms with no amenities!

This is a nice hotel with generally comfortable rooms. The service at the desk was good with the exception of one person on duty in the evening who was not very helpful. There were two deficiencies to our room: no curtains for one window to block the early morning light and no power outlets next to the beds for our cpap machines. Otherwise, we had a good stay.

Stayed at the Engel for the Simple Minds concert at the Barclays Arena Hamburg (great concert!). The hotel and staff are great and a quite nights sleep. The Papilon resturant attached to the Hotel is also great! Pubic transport (Bus) into Hamburg City centre is a 10 metre walk and a Taxi around 18 Euro.

Most of the people at front desk are friendly and helpful. Breakfast is delicious, huge variety of foods etc. Servers are polite and helpful.Italian restaurant looks nice but I have not trued it yet. One issue..at checkout time they tried to charge me quite a bit extra, I declined to pay and returned with my Hotels.com invoice.It is always the same man that causes these issues. They also charged me 3 euro a night for parking which is a first (I have stayed here for decades when I visit my family) and parking fee was not mentioned on Hotels.com website. I love the coziness of this hotel and the garden / tables in the courtyard. Parking lot can be full if you arrive later in evening. Wifi was weak in my room.

A super hotel and very well looked after, very friendly and helpfull staff. Also a nice quiet area. The only comment is the evening dinner, the menu is limited and is not matching the hotels high standard. I had the vienna schnitzel one night and it was not so good. The is the only issue of a great hotel, so please try your own menu.

Our room was in another building throug the garden, left then right then the lift on the right then turn left and right so took a while to get to the room plus we found another guy who was lost aswell.. would have been nice to be escorted to the room but over all very happy with the customer service and the hotel room was clean and big. All tv channels in German with no English subtitles but that’s minor

Nice hotel, watch out for hidden cost!

Warning: they hand out a breakfast coupon when you check-in, but don't tell you its 13€ per person. They make it seem like it's just included with your room comma and then the next day they bill you for it. (Very under-cool. Ruined what would be an otherwise pretty awesome Hotel.) The hotel is in a nice location and cleaning off, and everything else was great. You just have to watch to make sure you're not falling for one of their little scams.

Ok, spoilt by 2 things for me....

Hotel was ok. Clean. No air con though, the gym or fitness centre was a joke! How can a hotel get away with calling a fitness centre with bits missing! Dangerous more like..... one guy in the evening was rude. Attitude towards customers, was not what I call acceptable. Like he was doing us a favour just to get a late night beer to relax before bed.
Other than that it was ok.

My wife and I have stayed here several times in the past year and find it to be very clean and friendly. Steve (night mgr.) has made us feel at home each time he has been there, which makes us want to return. Main restaurant is very homey with good food. The beds are a little too hard, but I think that is common in Germany. We will return!

nice hotel close to the airport

we wanted a hotel close to the airport since we had a late evening arrival. Older hotel but was kept up nice. Although the hotel did not have AC, we did have a fan in our room which was needed to keep the room cool and comfortable. The internet worked only part of the time which was frustrating but the man at the hotel desk let me use their computer which I guess had high speed, so I could contact family back home one time. Restaurant next to the hotel was nice and had very friendly staff.

Good 4 star hotel with slightly tainted air about

A large 4 star hotel in a quietish corner of Hamburg. Lovely restaurant 4 star prices but good food well presented. I had Roast Salmon,King Prawn, Turkey Breats, air dried mountain ham with different salads in fine mustard dressing and 'hand made' white breadstick. All delicious but the turkey was a bit dry as turkey often can be - chicken may have been better. Took a while to be asked for my order and I had to remind the waitress that my beer was taking a long time. But very happy after I had eaten.
The room did have a dated feel but all in good condition. It is a great shame that the bottle of water in the room had a large tag attached showing it was two euros. Really? Why not just add it to the room price. It makes the place appear rather small minded. Especially as lower rated (and priced) establishments place a bottle of water gratis - a week earlier I stayed in a very comfortable place north of Berlin that among many included items in my room were two bottles of beer - a lower priced room too.
Breakfast was very good and staff very courteous, attentive and pleasant. You need to be there before 7pm to get parked on site and hope some dopey Danish driver doesn't block you in as they did me. It took me 15 minutes to inch forward and back ad infinitum to get out as Dane was not leaving as easy as I did.

Leafy suburb with easy access to the City Centre

I stayed in a basic room and was pleased to find it was spacious, comfortable and had its own fridge. The area surrounding the hotel is mostly residental. There are lots of trees and you might even notice a few sheep by Haagendeel station. Hard to believe its only 15minutes on the Ubahn to the city centre! About ten minutes walk from the hotel there is a supermarket. The area is quite close to the airport so you do hear aircraft taking off from time to time, but in my room I could barely notice it. I opted for the breakfast one morning and there was a great variety of food and friendly staff.

Quiet walk to the zoo.

Great hotel for a quiet room near Hamburg and within walking distance to Hagenbecks Zoo. I suppose it's true all over Europe, but I had become so accustomed to sealed American hotels that I was excited that the windows actually opened. I totally misunderstood the breakfast vouchers they gave me at check-in: I thought I was supposed to use them like an entry ticket to go to breakfast, but they are just a way for the hotel to facilitate tracking later. I found out at check-out that breakfast was definitely not included, but they do put out a fantastic breakfast.

A very pleasant hotel

A nice hotel, very reasonably priced. My room was basic but comfortable,however, it became noisy from the courtyard from about 7 am when staff members sat out to smoke and cough continually. Breakfast was very good and well organised. The bar was well stocked and kept clean. Overall the staff were very friendly and helpful. I would definately return but would ask for a room away from the courtyard.

We found Hotel Engel to be ideal. Its location outside the main city are and closeness to Lidl and the M5 bus route as well as less than a kilometer walker to the U Barn ideal. The hotel was spotless and the staff PERFECT.

You can choose to stay but not the best option

Overall it is OK to stay. But the front desk clerk can not provide a good service to provide me the adapter until I found another one to solve my problem for my device charging in the second day.
Besides the building doesn't have elevator which means that you need to carry your luggage to \"climb up\" to 3rd floor if you have heavy luggage.

Nice hotel in a very good neighbourhood.

Me and my husband had a very pleasant stay for two nights. Loved every bit of it. The hotel garden is very beautiful and the breakfast lounge connects to the garden. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. Will definitly recommend.

I totally enjoyed my room, but I thought service was lacking and at times rude. One night while I was there, the hot water wasn't working in my room and when I went to the desk to tell them, the clerk just said \"I'm not a plumber\" and we are full and have no other rooms. It seems to me that in a hotel with this many rooms, they might have someone on call to fix these things. Again, they weren't very friendly and in order to get the wifi code which changed frequently, I had to go to the reception desk which wouldn't have been a problem but I was in the room farthest from the desk across an open patio. Although, one night, the clerk did give me the code over the phone so when the next clerk told me they couldn't do that, it made me wonder what their policy really was. If you want a nice room with poor service, this is the hotel for you.

Great stay, not free breakfast.

Beautiful grounds! Lovely staff who knew English well and we're very kind. Only issue I had was a miscommunication where I thought the ticket they gave me for breakfast was a free voucher, and after only having a hot chocolate and toast I was charged 11 euros. I don't think it was intentionally anyone's fault, but it was an unfortunate loss of money...

They deceived us on the breakfast buffet. The clerk who checked us in gave us laminated passes \"for the breakfast buffet,\" which we assumed meant it was free, but when we checked out, they ambushed us with a charge of 11 euros apiece.

One glorious night stay!

We were only able to spend one night here as our plans did not allow more. We stayed here our last night before flying home. The hotel is very nice, The staff were all courteous and knowledge. The hotel and rooms were modern, very nicely decorated, and the very clean. We were able to have our supper in the restaurant at the hotel and were very surprised with our experience. We started off with a free beer from the hotel. We decided to order the surf and turf from the menu and were blown away when we cut into our steaks. These were the most tender and flavorful steaks we have had in a very long time! Our hats off to the chef!!!!!! The waitress was very friendly and helpful as well. I recommend this hotel to anyone who has the opportunity to stay here, and I recommend the surf and turf.

Good out of the way hotel

Overall a very nice place. Clean, in good repair, staff spoke english and were friendly. Good sized room and decent internet. My only real negative was that the room I had overlooked the interior bistro courtyard and the rather loud noise of conversation would go until 1am every night, and one night 3am. Closing the window helped, but without AC this made the room rather warm. Not a negative, but a note: the hotel is about .7 km from the train station and is about 15 minutes northwest of the central station by train. There are some great walking/biking areas nearby and a supermarket a few blocks away, if that's the kind of trip you're taking (which I was, so I was pleased).

The Hotel itself was very nice. We stayed there overnight to go to the Airport in the morning. Its about a 15 minute cab ride away, and in a very residential area. The nearest subway was a 10 minute walk. Nice place to stay to have a quiet night, not to sightsee in Hamburg. Hotel was very nice though.

Good standard city Hotel

I was searching for a long time before finding the Hotel Engel, I just wanted a reasonably priced, no-frills hotel with parking in a practical location. The Engel is situated north of Hamburg city centre in a decent residential area close to the airport, there was a little aircraft noise heard from the hotel but not really of bother. It was easily found on a main road and there was plenty of free parking. Staff were friendly and spoke good English, and the hotel had an 'above budget' feel. We were given a room on the 1st floor directly above reception with a view over the courtyard (nicely lit up in the evening). Not sure if there was anyone in the adjacent rooms but we heard no other noise from guests.The room was a good size, with a comfortable bed (though I couldn't seem to get comfortable on their pillows, even when extras were promptly brought up!) Bathroom was fine, tv and usual minibar etc. We didn't eat at the hotel though the prices seemed reasonable and the attached restaurant looked busy. I believe there is a U-bahn station within walking distance but as we drove we didn't look for it.

I stayed at the Hotel Engel on two non-consecutive nights during a recent business trip to Hamburg. My stays there were very pleasant. The hotel is in a quiet lovely residential area, though not immediatly adjacent to downtown or St. Pauli. The staff is very friendly and accomodating, the rooms are comfortable, and the restaurant was excellent, serving great local seasonal cuisine that was gourmet in style and presentation. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Hamburg.

The rooms were clean and nice, and the guy working New Year’s Eve showed us an upstairs room with an amazing view of the fireworks. Will definitely come again in the future.
