Staff were really kind and even refunded one of my nights that I couldn’t make due to horrible snow. Facilities were great and a nice Onsen.

A fabulous, quaint, traditional property in a superb location. The free hot bathing room privately available, was very enjoyable too. The proprietor was very attentive and helpful and you can tell he's rightly very proud to be Japanese. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only thing I would say is we found the mattresses uncomfortable. That may be just our bodies, but we struggled.

This ryokan has been in Bungo’s family for over 130 years. The amenities are clean and functional if dated. The service was fantastic—Bungo preemptively welcomed us to Kanazawa be way of detailed, helpful email. Upon checkin, he gave us a thorough tour and guidance around the facilities and even called a local restaurant to help us with reservations.

As a westerner, floor sleeping on a futon was a new experience. For those who won’t be comfortable with this, it’s probably best to reach out to Bungo to see what options they can offer.

Wow! Quel bel endroit traditionnel.

Ce ryokan est fantastique. Chambre traditionnelle immense et de toute beauté. Accueil chaleureux de Bungo et sa mère, toujours disponibles pour nous aider (donner des indications, donner accès à des vélos, appeler un taxi, nous référer un bon restaurant).
Pour une expérience unique et traditionnelle, c’est l’endroit idéal.

Wonderful place steps from the castle and garden

Host reached out to us ahead of time with a welcoming email so the tone was set for a warm and rewarding stay.
Once we arrived, his suggestions were exceptional (the ninja castle! fireflies out in the sculpture walk! the restaurant around the corner! the old neighborhoods!) He is the 5th-generation to run this ryokan and his pride in the place shows in every detail. Close to everything and authentic in every way. A wonderful place.

Good japanese experience

Once location found welcome was friendly. Room was typical japanese as expected - pleasant surprise was comfort cotton yokatans and excellent green tea ! Premises were very clean and 'living room' coffee machine was also nice detail. It was very quiet and pleasant to sleep and relax and airconditiong/heating worked well in the room. Ryokan location was excellent as everything was within walking distance. Only concern was whether we behave correctly according local standards....

The perfect ryokan

The place was beyond expectation. Great location, our family room (for five people) was very spacious and comfortable . Bungo and his mother run the place wonderfully, it’s the most welcoming and pleasant places we’ve stayed in. Bungo was extremely helpful with everything we needed and offered a lot of information about the city and the surroundings of the ryokan. My only regret is that we didn’t stay for longer time.

Superb Hospitality and Excellent Location

The hospitality at Ryokan Yamamuro is superb and makes the experience of staying there very special. The host of the ryokan is very friendly and helpful with great travel recommendations. In addition, his English is excellent. The ryokan is located only 2 blocks from Omicho market. I had breakfast at Omicho market every morning. My room setup was typical ryokan style so there were shared bathroom and shower/onsen facilities. Very enjoyable stay.

Very quaint family-run Ryokan. It felt like stepping back in time and really experiencing a traditional stay. We had a room with a private bath, so cannot comment on the shared facilities. Furniture is a bit dated, but very clean. The staff was stellar. Extremely helpful with suggestions in the area and really ensured we were having a good stay. They take pride in their ryokan, and it shows in their attention they show their guests. Location is excellent for visiting the Kenrokuen Garden and Castle Park.

For a comfortable and welcoming stay

After recently spending four nights at Ryokan Yamamoto, I can recommend it without reservation. Bingo and his mother are warm and gracious hosts, who were always available to guide and assist or the few occasions it was needed. The ryokan itself is well maintained, spotlessly clean and centrally located, with all sites in Kanazawa within comfortable walking distance. Bingo and his mother were just two examples of the kind and welcoming people we experienced in beautiful and enjoyable Kanazawa.

We loved Bungo and his mom!

We intended to stay one night and stayed three. Bungo and his mom are so warm and helpful. Our room was huge and comfortable. The shared bath was no problem ... we never waited or saw anyone else waiting. And we loved the fact that as a couple we could use the soaking tub together (after two weeks of single-single tubs and onsens). The location was very convenient to everything, especially the Castle park and Kenrokuen,the geisha district, and the market. Bungo’s English was great, which was a big help. No complaints!

Fabulous hospitality and location

We received a warm and helpful welcome from Bungo (whose english is great) and his Mum. They do a great job between them of keeping the Ryokan going. Our room was large by Japanese Ryokan standards with a private shower and small tiled Japanese style soaking bath. The Japanese style table and chairs were able to be left in place in addition to our 2 Japanese style beds. We also had an enclosed balcony with a low table and 2 armchairs that overlooked a tidy private Japanese courtyard garden.
The towels were changed, and the bed was made daily. The hospitality and assistance with suggestions for areas of interest and dining options were terrific.
Finally, the location was perfect. The ryokan is in a quiet street less than a 5 minute walk to the Omicho Market with lots of dining options. It was also about 5 minute walk to the rear garden entry to the Kanazawa castle which connects through to Kenrokuen gardens. It is only a 10 minute walk to the Higashi Geisha district and 15 minutes to Kanazawa train station. We would definitely stay again.

Great Location - Friendly Host - Noisy Building

Nice traditional Ryokan in good location. Very friendly good english speaking host. Good traditional Japanese bath. The only problem is the noice from other guests. If you want a good night sleep make sure you have a room on the top floor. We had a very nice room with garden on the first level. The ceilings are like a drum, if people just walking in the room above.

Great Location, Affordable, Family Friendly Ryokan

Kanazawa was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Ryokan Yamamuro was a big part of why we had such a great time. There are more expensive Ryokans for $$$ a night that did not allow children. While many hotels are close to the JR station and many travelers take the Kanazawa loop bus, we chose to stay in the heart of Kanazawa. Ryokan Yamamuro was walking distance to almost all the sights:
-5 mins to the south, we were at the Kanazawa Castle gate.. keep walking south we were at the Kenkoruen Garden.. from there you can continue on south to the Samurai District.
-10 mins. North east we were in the Kazuemaki Geisha District and the Asonagawa Bridge.... keep walking 5-10 mins east from there and you’ll reach the Higashi Chaya Geisha District.
-5 min walk to the Omicho market and craft lessons
We did all these with the toddler and we did great. The only area we didn’t go to was the Nishi Chaya Geisha District, which we could have reached if we crossed the bridge from the Samurai District.
Ryokan Yamamuro has the sweetest mom and son running their family home ryokan. It was authentic experience being in a traditional home for a fraction of the price of expensive ryokans. Not all ryokans are family friendly either so we were glad we found this ryokan. While they didn’t serve food, 7-11 around the corner and Omicho Market was great. They also have a private onsen in the basement. It was ONLY in this onsen my husband, son, and I were all able to bathe together in Japan.

This guest house is right in the centre of Kanazawa and offered a all we needed in a great location. We were able to walk to the market and main sights of the city and our room was comfortable - we booked the Japanese style room with private bathroom, which is well worth the small supplement in our view. However, the thing which really made our stay was the very warm welcome. We had our hire car squeezed into the hotel parking lot, we had local sights recommended to us and we had wonderful restaurants booked for us all within an easy walk of the hotel. Highly recommended!

We stayed in this lovely Ryokan and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The hosts were welcoming and extremely helpful. Overall the room was very traditional and we had a private bathroom that made life a little easier.
If you are going to Kanazawa for a few days, please put this Ryokan at the top of your list as it is close to most of the things to see.

Bungo, the general manager, and his mother Itzku couldn't have been more helpful and considerate. Always polite and smiling. The Ryokan is a simple one with spacious rooms and a delicious breakfast. The shared facilities were clean and there was a small onsen too. Overall it was a great stay in a friendly ryokan.

Spent 3 nights here. The hospitality was exceptional. Rooms were clean and authentic to the traditional Japanese way of sleeping on the floor. The futons may be a little hard for some but it was fine for us. The bathrooms are very clean and accessible and are checked out by room guests as needed- so shared but private. Breakfast here is extra but a great way to start the day- feels like you are at someone's home.

We were delighted to receive a warm welcome upon our late arrival, from the mother and son who run this ryokan. The family members were so friendly and helpful, showing us to our room with futons already set up, and explaining the facilities in detail. Make sure you treat yourself to the Japanese home-cooked breakfast - so delicious and filling! Overall, a great place to stay if you are seeking the traditional ryokan experience.

Great stay and great location to explore Kanazawa!

had a lovely time at Yamamuro. The room was a pretty standard ryokan style room but what made the stay stand apart was the friendly staff and great location. the staff was extremely helpful (made a few reservations for us) and the location is right next to bus stops take you all around town - super convenient. It's especially close to the Higashi Chaya District and Market, which was nice. overall recommended.

Best Ryokan

This is a great Ryokan, it is fairly basic but very clean. The best thing about this Ryokan is the staff - Bungo san and his mother are great - they looked after me so well, they recommended restaurants, told me which busses to get, and told me good sights to see. The breakfast was great - it changes every day, but is always a traditional filling Japanese breakfast. If I come back to Kanazawa I will definitely stay here!

Lovely family-run ryokan

We had an excellent stay at Ryokan Yamamoto. We stayed in the Botan room, which was very spacious with a lovely garden view. When we arrived the owner gave us a good orientation of Kanazawa with maps and restaurant recommendations. There were bicycles available to use free of charge, which we took advantage of. We opted to have breakfast on the second morning of our stay, which was cooked by the owner and it was delicious. Would definitely recommend!

perfect place to stay

It was one of the best experiences to stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan. The place is neat, comfortable and unbelievably quiet. The host couple is kind, warm, and wonderful in everything. My famiky and I really enjoyed staying in that lovely place. The location is very convenient near yhe market and great restaurants. Mr. Yamamuro helped us to find exact information we wanted to get. Home style breakfast was unbelievable. I will definitely go back to the place. The room was big and managed so cleanly. I lived taking bath every evening! Price was reasonable and outstanding service made things so pleasant and memorable.
