Excellent bed an breakfast in the Peak District run by friendly hosts. The room was impeccably clean and of a good size, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was modern and recently renovated. It is above the pub, which we also liked because it was possible to get dinner there - good 'pub grub' fayre. They also serve an excellent traditional English breakfast. Very happy to recommend this property to others.

The hotel was clean and well kept. Zero issues with the room or facilities as they all met expectations. All the staff were polite, professional and friendly. Special mention to Harry, Clare and the chef for going above and beyond to help with an issue I had(car trouble, not hotel related). Would recommend and would definately book again if in the area.

Great find, food was very nice Staff were lovely and very helpful. Restaurant was busy so must have a good local reputation. Sat in bar after meal on some lovely leather sofas with a beer chatting with other residents. Bed was very comfortable and slept well. Breakfast great- perfect fuel for a day of hiking. We will be back the staff were so nice and welcoming Thank you

Start with the positives, the staff couldn’t have been nicer, breakfast was really good. However the room was v tired, scuffed walls, cobwebs but everything you needed was in there. Remote didn’t work the tv which wasn’t a huge issue but the seal on the shower kept falling off and water ended up in the bathroom floor. We did report it and they provided extra towels.

Comfortable stay overall. Unfortunately, no chef was available meaning we needed to travel into town during the evening for food. Felt as though staff numbers were limited as often no-one was around.
Lovely setting with great views, road can be a bit noisy at peak times.

Beautiful setting. Rooms needs updating. More staff needed. Breakfast was served by one guy who was running ragged and cooking. We chose not to wait for breakfast the second day. Shame as the hotel could have an absolute gem. Room was very basic more like a hostel.
New land lady was friendly and has alot of work ahead.

Lovely place with the most beautiful views. Rooms were fine - clean and comfortable, nothing special to look at but perfectly adequate. The lady who has recently taken over said she is in the process of renovating them. Breakfast was good. Would happily stay again, especially after she has been there for a while longer. I can’t imagine anywhere having a better location for views and getting around the Peak District

The overall stay was fine. Really good food. The only reason I'm giving 5 stars for service is because of the young lad behind the bar. He was very welcoming and polite. We did notice him training other staff and giving instructions on how to do tasks properly as they clearly didn't know what they were doing all the while staying calm and content. Also kudos to the man who served us breakfast.

Basics were satisfactory and room clean and comfortable with all facilities working.
However, the room was not touched during our stay; no bed-making, waste paper bin not emptied; tea and milk not replenished. This may have been due to staff shortages from vacancies notice displayed.

Great location and wonderful staff. Our Labrador was welcomed with open arms and she didn't want to leave!
Rooms were spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was great, a heart meal ready for a days walking.
Short drive from Mam Tor and Kinder which meant we could get there early, ahead of any crowds.

Perfect For Everything! Highly recommended!

My partner and I booked this accommodation for 1 night of our 2 night trip exploring the Peak District, we are gutted we didn't stay here for the 2nd night! The room was very clean and inviting, the bed was super comfy, all room amenities included, lovely big towels and a modern well kept feel. The room definitely benefits from not being carpet - I feel it's so much cleaner especially in these hiking/walking locations so A* for that too!
We had dinner and breakfast here and couldn't fault either meals, service was spot on, food was yummy and piping hot! Barney, the four legged assistant was very handsome, we enjoyed his side eye at breakfast for a bit of sausage and he was a pleasure to have dine with us. We don't plan on heading up again for a while but we wouldn't entertain staying anywhere else. Everything was very easy to get to from this location, the views from the carpark/ room window were lovely and an all rounder ticking all the boxes for us.

Lovely country inn - worth a visit.

Nice cosy room, clean and comfortable. Pub was very quiet because road works were a problem. Local carol singers in the bar were wonderful, a lovely experience. Famous pies, good selection of real ales - recommended!

Lovely stay with a couple of mates. Room was excellent, nice clean beds and towels, lovely bathroom although the sower controls were a little confusing for me! Food was first class. I had steak, which was cooked perfect. My mates had fish and chips, which they said was excellent. Staff, first class. Polite and helpful. Over all good value for money and would go back there again.

First and last stay!

I was given a room which was the extension of the bar.The walls were made of wood with no windows anywhere in the accommodation.
I was hugely disappointed and angry as it not the room seen in the pictures (with window and plastered walls)when I booked the room in hotels.com website.
The cleanliness was shocking with few spiders spotted in the room, dirty sofa, toilet and stinking of wood from the wooden walls.
This place have put my family at risk of catching covid with nil ventilation, 11year old child was scared to sleep with spiders in the property and pungent wood smell triggered my wife’s wheeze.
As a result, the whole family didn’t have a sound sleep.
I also felt that I was hugely discriminated due to my race providing an unpleasant room different to others stayed on that day.
I didn’t pay such a huge price for such a worst experience of my 15 years travel life.
I feel that hotels. com has to take full responsibility and refund me fully for putting me and my family through this grim experience.

Great location, tired room

Set in an amazing location, and with great access to walks and bike rides.
The staff were great at providing information on changes due to Covid and all was very clear. And they were really friendly when we had dinner in the pub.
The main disappointment was the room. The mattress was well overdue being replaced, the curtains just a bit too small with one curtain rail starting to fall off. The wooden flooring and thin ceiling also meant we could hear a lot from upstairs. This meant that on the whole the room didn't feel like it matched the price we paid. From reading other reviews potentially other rooms have been refurbished recently, and hopefully this room is next.
Breakfast was a takeaway bag of bread for toast, orange juice, packaged muffin and packaged croissant. A reasonable breakfast but we would have loved to have something fresher or more varied, and a side table or something to eat at in the room. Having said that we also understood that this was making the best of a difficult situation.

Lovely hotel, in a beautiful part of the world. The room was clean, spacious and light.
The only thing I would have liked was the option of a cooked breakfast. The continental breakfast was nice, but having the option of cooked would have been better. However, I knew this when I booked the room so it’s not a complaint, just personal preference.
Overall a very enjoyable stay, friendly and helpful staff and a stunning location.

We stayed at Millstone on a miserable, wet Thursday night. This meant there were few other people in the pub and we were unable to use the terrace overlooking the valley, which was a shame.
From the start, staff tried hard to make us welcome and we were given clear information on changes to normal procedures caused by Covid. This included an explanation of breakfast arrangements.
Our room was basic, but very clean and recently refurbished. We ate in the pub that evening and enjoyed a good meal from a typical pub menu. Staff were constantly cleaning when not dealing with customers, which was reassuring.
Breakfast the next morning was a takeaway bag of croissant, muffin and bread for toast. A toaster was available for use. A carton of orange juice was included and there were tea and coffee making facilities in the room. In decent weather we could have sat on the terrace to eat breakfast, but continued rain meant we had to sit in our room.
Overall we felt that staff were trying hard to make the best of difficult circumstances.

On arrival we were not informed of Covid-19 restrictions during our stay. There were no towels in our room and nobody was available to provide us with any that evening or the next morning. Breakfast was a takeaway packed lunch that we had to eat in our room - even though the restaurant is open in the evening for reservation and walk-ins, residents aren't able to have a breakfast in the restaurant which doesn't make sense.

The room was not cleaned and no towels provided, no re-stocking of tea / coffee cups so we had no facilities for the second evening or the next morning. When we brought this up with the management they did not seem to care and just blamed their staff and Covid-19. They gave us a couple of towels (still not enough to last the length of our stay) and said they would sort the other issues but did not. There was no apology or want to fix these problems.

Had we been told there were limited services when checking-in and there been enough towels, cups, coffee etc. in our room to last the duration of the stay it would have been more pleasant but it is very obvious the management are using Covid-19 as an excuse to take advantage of saving costs in areas that suit them only.

Food service was not great, no table service in-line with most restaurant practices to support social distancing, our waiter disappeared and kitchen closed whilst we were still looking at the menus so we weren't able to finish our meal.

VERY disappointing for £150 p/night. Avoid.

Only downside world be the that it's located on a fairly busy main road. Really can't complain that. Would definitely stop there again! Fantastic!

Nice friendly atmosphere. Room was cold and radiators didn't work well. I think previous occupants had been fiddling with the valves and turned them off but this could have been checked. I think they also need bleeding as warm at bottom, cold at top.
Slight problem with the bill as I had prepaid with hotels.com but was told on check out that no payment had been received. When I checked later the payment had definitely been made to hotels.com so they sorted out a refund.
Real ale good and also breakfast good. All staff very friendly. Nice open fires and wood burners.

Ours was a, short stay in the Peak District. This is a delightful family run Inn offering great service and great food. Lovely views and the pub walk leaflet was a nice little touch, and much appreciated. 3 walks to choose from leaving at the pub door. The weather helped. The walking was superb.

Nice location, too many important flaws

This was my fifth hotel I have stayed at in the Peak District over the past 4 years whilst i go hill walking. This was not as good as the others. I stayed for 2 nights.
On the positive side, it is easy to access and with a large car park. The staff were very friendly and appeared welcoming and the pub had great beers! My room had a nice comfy bed, a good sized TV and of reasonable size, although the bathroom was shall we say, small.
On the negative however:
1. Noisy room at night due to a water taking filling next door.
2. Bathroom not cleaned or dirty towels replaced and coffee.milk cartons not refreshed.
3. No wifi (at all!) despite advertising to the contrary. I could however have used 3 neighbouring property's wifi's with excellent signals (if they were not password protected).
4. Other than the eggs, cooked breakfast was not up to much ( overdone sausages and bacon).
I am limited in characters on this review to write more, but you get the idea. I think they were short of staff (I saw a \"stafff wanted\" board outside) and if so, it might account for part of my gripes, but not the wifi.

Worth the stay

Nice clean rooms just refurbished all rooms dog friendly with laminate flooring. nice choices at breakfast from cereal, yoghurt and fresh fruit to full English or kippers, a toaster was also provided so you could make nice fresh toast. Friendly staff, good beer and tasty food. Some building work being done in the morning when we left, refurbishing the loos. Popular with cyclists and walkers. Would stay again if in the area.

On arrival my wife went to hang up clothes and found the inside of wardrobe and drawers beneath coated with decorating dust. The room itself was clean and well decorated (freshly done) but detail forgotten. I borrowed a duster. Bathroom shower cubicle new but too small to manoeurvre and shower hose leaked at joint so unwanted extra spray! Lovely bath towels and good lighting in bedroom. No double glazing so in busy summer period assume it could be noisy as near road (nasty bend for crossing with children). Poor wi-fi connection. Breakfast excellent and plenty of free parking.

Bad experience. Toilet did not flush properly - had to remove the tank lid and manually flush it. Room heat was off until 7 pm. Staff closed the bar and locked up at 9:45 pm. When we came back from dinner for a nightcap, the whole place was dark. We had told them beforehand that we’d be back for a scotch but I guess they decided to close up anyway. Bad form. Recommend to avoid.

Room with a view

Situated near the top of a hill the hotel has a super view of the Derbyshire countryside. The staff are friendly and efficient. The room was large and well equipped. There is a limited variety of cold breakfast items but a good choice of hot breakfast food. The only criticism I have is that our room faced the road and although it provided a wonderful view the lights from the traffic were quite intrusive at night even with the curtains closed. There is quite a lot of traffic as it is on the main road.
It is about a 20 minute walk down into Hathersage and a short distance by car to the Longshaw Estate and Padley Gorge. Bakewell is easy to get to and not too far.

booked at short notice, great welcome on arrival, offered to carry my bag, showed me to my room.

food for evening meal was very tasty and well priced.

broadband a little light on connection on the upper floor, but once i connected in the bar and moved up it was fine. Speed pretty good too as well considering its a rural hotel.

room well appointed and clean, couple of areas round the building ready for a refresh but nothing to worry about, decor is definitely traditional but its an old building so is in keeping with the venue.
