Disappointing - over-hot room to sleep comfortably
We were travellin from the snow to catch a ferry. The hotel advertised air-conditioning but the only available option was heeat - for an already over-heated room. When I checked with reception they said management had made a decision not to offer cooling air-con at that time of the year. They agreed the description was inaccurate. They offered no solution, although said the hotel was very full and other rooms would be warmer . In the end we had to stay in the room (rather than go out for the evening - the whole point of paying a premium to stay somewhere worthwhile) with the room door and window open to reduce the temperature. Therefore cannot talk about location and proximity to attractions!

Our stay at Mercure Carlton Rioja was okay. The air-conditioner was not working the first day/night. It was VERY uncomfortable! We had to open and keep the windows open the whole night just to try to stay comfortable. They fixed it the following day so the other 2 nights/days we stayed there were fine. Hotel needs some updating especially the reception area and the hallways.

I’m not crazy about cities but we had a great time here. The hotel was exceptional, especially the service. Car parking wouldn’t be easy if you couldn’t get into their underground car park but we got in with a Mercedes Vito (and 21 point turns!). Hire some bikes and zoom around - well worth it.

The worst part of this hotel was finding a parking spot. I circled around for 20 minutes before parking 3/4 mile away. Once you are there it is fine. It is a 5 minute walk to the main attractions of the city. Hotel is clean and staff friendly.

We're walking the Camino de Santiago and stayed at the Carlton Rioja for one night. It's just a couple of hundred metres off the Camino and not difficult to find. The location is quite close to the historic area where small bars and cafes abound.
Our double room was quite large and well appointed. It was so nice to have a bathtub (shower combo) for a long soak. The room had blackout curtains so it was dark for sleeping although we didn't find the twin beds very comfortable. Our window looked out to a cement wall.
The front desk staff was slow to check us in - a female staff was busy with other guests and a male staff member was preoccupied with busy work until the female staff member directed us to him after we'd been standing waiting for 5 minutes. Later, the female front desk staff member was helpful in arranging a luggage pick-up with an outside agency.
Overall it is a very modern and spacious hotel in a good location. It was a nice change from most of the other accommodations we've had on the Camino. We would recommend the Carlton Rioja to other travellers.

This is my second visit!! I stayed in August on my way home and enjoyed my stay so I decided to stay this time. The hotel is superb the staff are very helpful nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are modern clean with products and mini bar with reasonable drinks. It is in a perfect position for visiting the square and wine bars and restaurants.
