We’ve stayed here before and only chose this property again because of the lovely old room we stayed in. However, this time we were in the new build which was not even close to the last time we stayed. It was huge but had no soul no pictures no history. I think when booking this room it should be made clear that there is a possibility that you will be placed in the new build and not the castle. So disappointed. The breakfast was lovely but the toilets in the new build had brown water and smelled. I love the area and I will definitely be back but next time I’ll stay somewhere else. If I’d not stayed here before I wouldn’t have known what I was missing.

The Parking was on site. There is a Bar & Restaurant. We had an excellent evening meal. The Hotel is within easy drive to Wypres, the Menin gate also Passiondale and Tye Cott, also a Theme park very close. All in all this Hotel is really good. We would come again.

Lower sore for more recent annex accommodation

Previously wee have had a bedroom in the old building which is very atmospheric and enchanting. However, this time we were given a room in the newer annex which had inadequate lighting. Even with all of the ceiling and wall and table lamps lit, t was difficult to read from screens at any rime of day because the lights were not diffuse enough, more like localised spotlights.

If you like staying in a room that allows you to hear the bowel movements, coughing, snoring etc from people in other rooms then this is the hotel for you!!

The decor is shabby not chic
Floor boards creek and doors are constantly slamming

Everything seemed to be an effort for the receptionist, no advise on what was available locally

We stayed for one night in this lovely property while visiting Ypres. The property is full of relics from the war and includes a history trail around the grounds with trenches and information.
Immediately behind the hotel however (and you can see people queueing on the slides) is a huge water park - This didnt cause any noise that I noticed but it is out of keeping with the memorial spirit of the hotel and the area. We happen to love a water park, so this was a bonus for us but may not be for others.
Just a 5-10minute drive to the Menin-gate and Ypres and many surrounding points of interest.
The property is old fashioned and quaint, we had a room with a balcony and a comfortable bed. The bathroom again is old fashioned but all in keeping with the style of the property (think shower curtain and individual bars of soap).
I would absolutely recommend this for a place to stay when visiting Ypres. There is a very quiet and dated bar which served great Belgian beers and the breakfast was continental with the expected charcuterie, cereals, pastries etc (and Honey cake!).
We enjoyed the experience.
Not much for younger people to do here and I think you would be bored in the hotel for more than a night or two but perfect for visiting the local sights.

We had booked a room for 2 adults and 2 children and were very lucky to be in a 2 bed apartment! It was exceptionally clean. Bed was probably the most comfortable I have slept in! Breakfast was very good also. No complaints at all, would definitely stay here again.

Not comfortable and 20 euro single taxi to centre

Would not stay here again. Scaffolding all around hotel. Bar was at hard dinning room chairs so same room for breakfast not very comfortable. Also to get to centre it’s 20 Euro each way in a taxi. We traveled in and out to Centre suppose to be 4 km, but we were 120 euro out of pocket. We had different taxi drivers each time and same cost 20 euro. Never again.

Kasteelhof hotel is on the edge of the Hooge crater from WW1 and has WW1 artifcats in the grounds. The hotel serves a very good continental breakfast with hot tea and coffee. Evening meal is very good with a small menu to choose from. Excellent bar with many local beers. The rooms was very clean and made up everyday. It has a modern annexe and the main block defies its 1920 build heritage have been modernised a few time

Great complimentary breakfast. Trench and Crater tour is great, there are info boards with Hooge Chateau spefic info, very cool to stand where so much happened in the Great War. Go next door to the Crater Museum and have a Wipers Times beer.

Really nice clean and friendly hotel breakfast very well provided and rooms clean, we stayed in the new part. Very close to most of the points of historical interest and staff on arrival very helpful in providing helpful information. Check out the walk to the side of the hotel more to see then you think. Would I return yes myself and my kids really enjoyed our stay at the hotel and the area.

Hotel with a past

The hotel looks old, it isn't that old, post WW1. The rooms are comfortable and breakfasts good but if you want to retire or arise with the Great British cure-all of a cuppa in bed then take your own kettle. Its unique selling point is the crater next door which can be visited from the hotel. It is well worth it, lots of authentic retrieved relics, some trenches, bunkers and such like with interesting information boards. The lake formed in the crater left after several mines and shells exploded in the woody area beside the hotel. It was a bit green with water weed when we went but pictures taken in spring made it look a very peaceful contrast to the horror of its formation.
The mealtimes don't fit in easily with visiting the Menin Gate Ceremony, the main reason we visited Ypres,but if they are like the breakfasts the cooking will be good. So, an establishment to be recommended for a short stay around Ypres but the nearby theme park was having a refit while we were there so cannot comment about the normal level of noise.

A must if interested in History

This is a lovely nice old hotel with very comfortable rooms, good breakfast and good Beer. However the amazing gem is the grounds which holds a rare preserved part of the Ypres battlefield. Original British trenches, pill boxes, a gun and spent munitions lie all around and it becomes clear that the small lake is actually the result of 4 German mines which were detonated under the British trench line. Story boards help bring the location to life and the closeness and horrors of trench combat is clear. Thanks to the Hotel owners for preserving this incredible bit of history.

I was spending a few days visiting the battlefields of Ypres and the Somme with my son, and would say that the hotel grounds was the best preserved trench site we saw. Remarkably, we wouldn't have known all this existed if I hadn't been staying on that side of the hotel! Entrance is by a €1 donation into an honesty box!

Ideal for visiting Ypres and war graves etc.

Hotel is within ten to twelve minutes cycling time to Menin Gate. It is in a quiet location and easily found when driving. We were there for two nights and we had dinner the first night. It was an excellent meal, with a good menu. Likewise the breakfast, plenty to eat and plenty choice. All in all a nice short break.

Amazing WW1 Ruins & Amusement Park

The amazing thing about this hotel is that there are relatively unmanicured ruins from a WW1 battle on the property. You can walk in them and have the place to yourself. Behind the crater Museum, which is a few doors down, you can also connect with an extensive walking trail. So the locations is very good provided you have a car.
On the other hand, we stayed in the new building (not usually pictured) and it lacks air conditioning and decent ventilation. Suffice to say it was HOT. Also, there is an amusement pack directly behind the hotel and they are presently adding a new wing. When we were there it wasn't noisy but it was a bit of an eye sore.

Very Good Location

Great location for visiting Ypres and the battlefields. The hotel is located on the Menen Road and is surrounded by history, the grounds contain a WW1 large crater and trenches. The hotel is clean and the breakfast ample. Some rooms are in the new annex and are well appointed apart from a lack of toiletries, would recommend you have your own shower gel and shampoo etc. The new annex has a kitchen and dining area which is ideal for a family. If you ride a bike, there are excellent cycle paths and Ypres is only a mile or so down the road.

We loved this place. It’s a couple of kilometers outside Ieper but with very easy access to the city. There’s a wonderful open air museum on the site of the crater, and the adjacent graveyard is of course immaculate and a very moving experience.
We stayed in the rooms in the new wing of the hotel. They are very spacious, comfortable and well appointed. Parking is absolutely no problem. Breakfast in the main building was excellent.
We simply couldn’t recommend this place more highly.

when i mentioned i would be departing before breakfast, the woman at the desk told me she would leave a coffee for me, this included butter and several rolls to my surprise.

Lovely hotel in ideal location

Very nice hotel ideally situated on the outskirts of Ypres. It comprises an older 'mansion style' building and a modern annex. The rooms in the annex were large and extremely well equipped and, despite overlooking a main road were very quiet.
Breakfast was the usual continental buffet style but a good selection and plenty of it. Dinner (which is not available Sunday) was also very good - wide choice and well cooked.
The staff were all very friendly and efficient.
Location is ideal for visiting the historic city of Ypres and also the nearby First World War cemeteries - there is even a WW1 site in the hotel grounds.
I stayed there for two nights in October with some family members and we were all delighted with our stay - can recommend this hotel!

The hotel was in a very poor state of decoration and it felt more like a hostel which was charging hotel rates. Although our room was unattractive it was clean and the bed was comfortable. The bedroom was unheated and decidedly chilly until we located the switch for the heater - not very welcoming ! The complimentary breakfast was better than anticipated and was served in a pleasant dining room. We chose the hotel for its location and fortunately we were only staying for one night - I would not stay there again.

Hotel on outskirts of Ypres

Our stay was for one night. The hotel is situated in a quiet area on the outskirts of Ypres. The room (located in the new building) was spacious, comfortable and very clean and the all inclusive continental breakfast was adequate, we didn’t have dinner in the restaurant. The crater in the hotel grounds was a bonus and very interesting. Parking was easy and included in the price, as to really appreciate Ypres you do need a car.

What a lovely hotel. Beautiful setting, staff friendly, breakfast buffet very nice, plenty of choice, good quality. Original WW1 trenches within the grounds, very moving. Theme park right next door but no noise or disruption to our stay - wouldn't know it was there ! Probably worth a visit if you have children. Hooge Crater museum within walking distance, war cemetry opposite.
Conveniently situated for travelling into Ypres to visit Menin Gate, Hill 62 Sanctuary Wood, Passchendaele Memorial Museum etc

Good hotel, good location

We were in the area to visit First World War memorials and museums. This hotel was perfectly located. It was a within a 25-minute drive of everything we wanted to see. Parking was easy. Room was comfortable. Breakfast was filling.

The hotel bar was particularly welcome after a long day of sight-seeing.

Recommend this if you're looking for a quiet location near historic sites.

Ideally located to explore World War 1 cemeteries.

As well as it's location to WW1 sites, it is located in a very pleasant area about 2 miles from Ypres, Has WW1 trench site within the grounds with details of the story about the mines and craters and authentic pictures from those times. We notified hotel that we couldn't book in until very late, but it wasn't a problem. Staff very healthy. Buffet breakfast was tasty with a good variety. Room spotless, warm, and quiet.
If you have to use a taxi, they aren't cheap! Expect to pay15 Euros for the trip from the railway station to the hotel. Four taxi firms all came up with the same price. However we found the hotel itself excellent and would use again

Stayed two nights. Friendly and helpful staff. Modern, clean rooms. Large bathroom. Comfy beds. Does not have A/C but the room was cool from the large doors that open.

Great food, and the free breakfast was great, lots to chose from.

Definitely would recommend this hotel.
