An excellent place to stay right on the river with views of river traffic and bridges. Excellent restaurant service and bar inside and outside with full menu that will also work for more Western tastes. Within a mile of major Indian rail system. One of few or possibly only floating hotel.

The property is a repurposed ship which is a cool idea. The Bengali buffet lunch was great. The breakfast was amazing. The view was really beautiful as you are on the Ganges river and the Hooghly bridge is in front of you, from your room. But the property is very old and has not been upgraded. The room we were in, had a dirty old carpet with stains and the walls had old paint. The bathroom was clean. The room was probably very near the kitchen as we got lot of smells when we stepped into the balcony. The corridor also smelled of food. My suggestion is that the kitchen should not be kept so near the rooms and can be moved to the main entry area away from the boat which houses the rooms. The concept and property was very beautiful but unfortunately its not being managed well. Its worth a visit to dine, but the rooms need upgrades.

This is definitely one of those places that is just running on past glory. The room was super cramped and had a damp smell. We also saw visible mold on the shower curtains and my fiance immediately started having a reaction to it. There was extremely loud music playing way past 2 am. There was a lot of noise coming from upstairs and the corridor from the early morning. Kids were running around making noise without supervision. Finally, when we went for breakfast, the host was super rude and basically shouted at us for coming in late for the breakfast buffet and threw the menu at us when we wanted to do a la carte. We left without having breakfast and rest assured will never return here again.

Interesting location

The location is excellent with fantastic views of the river. One should stay for this reason alone. Having said that, the condition of the hotel needs to be improved. Quite run down in many places. Simple things like good choice of TV channels (especially the News and Sports channels), tissue boxes in the room etc. should be looked at

Uncomfortable hotel better to avoid.

We had a very uncomfortable stay for 5 nights in this hotel.
The location and view from room was the only positive point, rest everything was bad. The room was smallest I have seen any this type of hotels, the bed was ridiculously small,could hardly accommodate two adult persons. The bathroom was also very small with defective plumbing. The lift lobbies and the lifts stink.
The gangway bridge was shaky and difficult to walk.wifi was not free and exhorbitingly costly. Breakfast spread was average but the service in the restaurant is below standard. Food prices are very high.
I would not advise anyone to stay in this hotel.

Good Property Badly Maintained

The hotel has a lovely location. It floats on the river Ganges. The view from the room is excellent.

But the property is not well maintained. The room was very small and it was full of old wooden furniture which had outlived their utility. Rooms are not cleaned properly. The room service is poor and most of the staff members have a laid back attitude.
The bathroom was stinky and the tiles were full of stains.
The restaurant serving the breakfast has a good ambiance. But the breakfast spread is not plenty. The croissants and other bakery items are served cold.

We noticed inefficiency everywhere. The staff at the reception had no knowledge of our booking made wth hotels.com long back. On producing the print out of the hotels.com voucher they were kind enough to provide us a room.

Needs a big lick of paint

1 star hotel charging 5 star prices, needs a lot of modernisation furniture still from the 50's and looked vey worn, carpets smelt like they have never been changed, staff were friendly and polite making the best of trying to keep the hotel clean and presentable, felt very sorry for them as even their uniform was unclean. Ridiculous charges at bar and restaurant bottle of kingfisher was over 400 Rupees over 4 times the price to other places which had far better décor, Floatel hotel living on past glories. only good thing I can write is breakfast was okay with varied foods.

Good concept of a floating hotel

I had booked the Ganges facing room but the view is best avoidable with filth flowing in the river. Only the view of Howrah bridge is worth looking at, that too in night. I took ill on my way to the hotel and after 3 reminders, utter confusion and 90 minutes later I get one tablet of the medicine that I had requested. I had booked an emergency flight to rush back home due to my bad heath but the hotel could manage any cab for almost an hour in spite of their assurances earlier and they did not have a cab service of their own. I had to ultimately cancel my flight and lose money on the same. The room had a distinct stink. Food was passable.

Oh, I don't know. Overall, it was OK. The food prices in the restaurant are HIGH by India standards, especially by Kolkata standards. The dining room is overstaffed and thus is somewhat disorganized. Overall, I think the hotel has tried to figure out every way to get as much money as possible out of all guests. However, they did not charge me to use the phone in the lobby; guests cannot dial outside the hotel from their rooms.

very helpful staff, needing refurbished, but it was the noisiest hotel I have ever stayed in. With about 25 rooms and about 10 function suites, noise was almost continual. If you want a good nights sleep go elsewhere.

Getting used to this Hotel

It's my second time in this hotel. The reason why I had book it for the second time was to explore the feel of floating while staying inside Room. I should say there wasn't anything of that sort I had felt. It is a good hotel though with prominent service. Food price is exorbitantly high though.

That was one heck of a night I had staying in this Hotel, Receptionist are kind enough to pack me a bag of breakfast early in the morning while I left, Good ambiance and a perfect Hotel to stay if you are trying to catch an early morning train from Howrah. Food was good, However they didnt have much of a variety!

The drainage is not proper due to which even after you flush the toilet, after some time when you return you find it dirty. the filth is collecting from other rooms usage as well. This is a serious issue. The toilets smell all the time and it smells upto the room as well.

This Hotel was recommended by Hotel.com assistance. It was a worst experience i ever stayed. Rooms are too small and shabby. even the floor tiles were broken state. Food quality is bad. service is poor. I will never recommend this hotel to any one and i suggest you too not to recommended to anyone to keep up your reputation.

Its an unique of its kind-its wonderfull

Right from the check-n me and my partner got a feel that guest are welcomed here, unlike other hotels in this price range in Kolkata. Staff were helpful,courteous , rooms are small but well made up by the scenic beauty it offers -with iconic Howrah Bridge on one side and Vidyasagar Sethu on the other;not to spk of boats plying on the river and the Howrah Stn. on one side and the majestic SBI building with two centuries of history behind, on the other side,made our stay a wonderful experience.The bar and restaurants are thoughtfully designed/decorated and food/beverages served were excellent.
I,wish, I could go back again.

The overall stay was just o.k. Not great though. Beds are not big, breakfast is average, room service is slow.The only plus point is the river-view window of the room Rest everything is just average and in fact below average for what you pay and the rooms are too small . you can find much better deals at this price in kolkata elsewhere in commercial hotels in a probably 4 star property.

Floatel Hotel - My Kolkata favorite

The Floatel Hotel provides the perfect balance between the three or fewer star hotels one finds in India for a reasonable amount; and those luxury hotels that are great but cost too much. This was my second stay there, and I will stay there on my subsequent trips to Kolkata. The theme is a nice touch, and I love the hotel's commitment to being ecofriendly. The buffet is always a favorite, too.

Clean quiet island in the sea of dust and noise

The best thing about the Floatel is location - it is not in a building but in a boat floating on the river. As such, it is largely unaffected by the exhaust fumes, dust, and noise that Kolkata generates in abundance.

Hotel staff speaks very good English and is very accommodating and helpful. Room was clean and quiet, and food in the hotel restaurant was good. The hotel is relatively centrally located, even though getting from one place to another in Kolkata always took far more time than the distance on the map would suggest.

The hotel also holds a distinction of the only hotel out of a half a dozen or so that I stayed in on my trip to India that actually had hot water. In all the others, some far more pricier than Floatel, \"hot\" actually meant \"barely room temperature\".

If you are a foreigner, be careful with the Taxis that you hire through the hotel or near the hotel entrance. Most of the drivers expect to get more money from you than a random taxi driver on the street would.

Not good value for money

This hotel relies on the uniqueness of being on the river which frankly is way over-rated. To be fair the staff were fantastic for service and treated us well. The room however was small, and very dated, the bathroom was substandard and not nice. The location was very convenient and it was easy to navigate being on the strand. The view in the morning over the river was quite good, but then how much polluted water do you want to see? We felt the room was still quite pricey (NZ rates) butnot value for money at all.

Good concept, staff tries but lousy execution

The concept is great. Shame that the execution is so bad. Booked for one night to have a quiet relaxing evening on the river, looking at the city sites. On the website, the rooms looked ok, the surroundings looked like a park foreshore. Supposedly within the walking distance of the city centre. You get choice of rooms with king-size beds and either the river or city views. Forget it.
You get what you pay for. This is the place for a low budget traveler. First time ever that I have been to a hotel that has a railway track right across the entrance. Not seen a train but track is used and had a functioning signal.
After checking in we went across a gangway with industrial appearance to the hotel \"barge\" on the river. Inside looked very good somewhere in the 60s or 70s but now required maintenance. The lift was small and smelly.
Booked rooms with river views - lucky. Forget rooms with city views –you will admire the SBI building across the road. Asked for a king size bed. Got twin beds and explanation that king-size beds are small and in city-side rooms. Beds are king-size if you are 5’. Had to ask to change the bed sheets and pillows as the ones given were dirty. Rooms look worn. with chipped furniture.
Restaurant staff tries hard and food is OK but forget any ambience. Similarly, forget other facilities – either bad standard or nonexistent. Hotel brochure mentions courtesy pick up and drop – booked it and was given a taxi next morning at 3 times the normal rate.

the floatel hotel was overall a good experience. The staff are the highlight of this hotel, all staff very friendly and helpful. I had an infection in my elbow prior to arrival at hotel & needed to see a doctor, staff arranged for doctor to attend, picked up medication etc. the staff are the greatest asset of this hotel. My room was quite good considering it is on a boat, the views are good, the food was good & breakfast is included (good choice of food). My only concerns were bed linen was marked, although had been washed. there is no wireless internet and the one computer is very slow & cumbersome to use, should be upgraded to wireless. I would have no hesitation in staying here again. I would recommend this hotel.
