In a phone call from someone from the hotel ( turns out they were from the Crescent hotel, owned by by same company,) I specifically asked about breakfast time as we had to be at Assembly rooms at 8 am. I was assured breakfast started at 7.30, even on a Saturday. On arrival I found this was not the case. The person on reception assured us that it would be be sorted with either the chef coming in early or us being walked round to other hotel. Saturday morning staff knew nothing about this but did take us to other hotel.
The lift was an act of faith; we only used it going up, despite mobility issues , and twice had to get a member of staff to get the lift as the door did not always close properly. Meal in the bar was excellent…but was the restaurant ever open for anything other than breakfast?
We also had to ask for more toilet roll; even budget hotels leave you a spare!

Staff at breakfast needed to be a lot more helpful and cleaner. Breakfast was cold and dried up bacon like leather. Overall all staff needed sorting ie learn how to wellcome visitors. Bar was not stocked and unable to purchase draughty beer. Would not advise others to stay.

The hotel itself, probably due to age, needs attention re decor and sash windows which are draughty. I felt there were building restrictions making things difficult for updating.

The building is the oldest hotel in England so you can't expect it to be all shiny and gleaming. But it is very clean, slightly quirky and off shape and the floors were solid but uneven at times. This just added to the charm for us though as we live in a 90yr old house so it didn't surprise us. The room was very clean, the bathroom was nicely refurbished and came with nice toiletries provided. The bed was slightly firm but that's a personal preference so we can't complain about that. Checked in early as our room was ready. Alistair on reception was fantastic, funny little tales and lots of local information to help us settle in. The were no evening meals being served so we ate next door and were given a 20% discount voucher to do so which is a nice touch. We had the fish and chips in Darwins bar, huge portion and well cooked. Breakfast was excellent and comes with a nice view over the Pavilion Gardens if you get the right table. Nice hotel. Not too expensive and great for the one night we stayed

Although the hotel is a unique property, very old and quirky and in a great spot in the town which was good, it is very tired. The room we stayed in whilst clean needed complete redecoration and the furniture needs to be replaced and the same applies to the hallways and corridors.

Fabulous location, good breakfast but needs more staff working. Some of the hotel needs repairs, but overall charming, with great snippets of history dotted around. Very noisy due to it's age, so recommend ear plugs! Parking directly outside, pay hotel, not the meter.

Charming hotel with in the perfect location for exploring Buxton and the area, gorgeous character features, spacious room four poster a nice touch, loved the old oak furniture, spotlessly clean, fluffy towels and Elemis toiletries.
The dining area is a bit plain and we were let down by the steak albeit it steak night, but the management sorted it out without quibble. Breakfast, breakfast was excellent, what's more the waitresses were all lovely and friendly. Enjoyed our stay and would go back..

The room was a good size, with good storage. Everything was fresh, clean and tidy. The decor and furniture were a little old fashioned but in a charming way. I had a comfortable sleep. The shower was really nice. Thankfully, although the room was well-situated in the town, the street was not very noisy. Breakfast had a good variety of food on offer and all the staff were very friendly. I really enjoyed my stay.

This is a well run hotel. It is an old hotel so, you must expect things to be a little unmoden.
It was clean, staff were helpful and was a pet friendly hotel. Parking outside on the road but given a pass to place in your car. The bed was lovely, we got a good nights sleep. The shower was easy to use and over a bath.
The breakfast was excellent, with a choice of continental, cereal and/or full English. Lovely smiling staff first thing in the morning.
At checkout we were asked if everything had been okay from the lovely gentleman on reception. We travel alot all over the world and this hotel and staff were as good as some of the 4 and 5 stars we stay at. It's not always about how modern a place is, sometimes its about the history of the building and the vibe it gives you. There is a few areas that are in need of a little work but that is understandable with the age of the building. We would definitely stay here again.

Its an old Hotel so you expect age but there was hair on the bed and it seemed rather dated everywhere. The hotel reception rang before our visit and I enquired if I needed to pre book for dinner, was told no, but when we got there the restaurant was shut anyway and we was told to use next door! Our room should have been a family twin but again when we got there we was put in a standard double, on enquiry the staff were helpful and we were moved to a twin. breakfast was again ok, everything was ok, nothing special but ok.

The Old Hall Hotel is very well situated to local shops, pubs, cafes and just across the road from the Opera House. We booked breakfast with our stay which was good food and choices, it is a traditional English breakfast with cereal, toast, jams, honey and croissants. We have stayed here a few times and would go back again. The building or part of it is very old and has historic charm, it is clean throughout and staff are helpful and friendly. It has history for example Mary Queen of Scots stayed there as did, I was told, Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Clean and comfortable room with a view of the park. Had to put the kettle on the floor to plug it in as it was the only available socket. Good choice for breakfast. Had to go and ask for tea and coffee at breakfast as the 2 staff on duty were busy tidying up and refilling the breakfast buffet. Sign at restaurant entrance said please wait to be seated - there was no-one around to do this so just went in.

Old Hall is a quirky, beautiful old building. The bedroom was cosy and clean.
The reception staff were amazing! Very friendly and helpful. Breakfast service was a little disappointed. We had to ask for water, brown sauce, baked beans, teaspoons and tables were left with dirty plates for longer than needed

The staff need more training they don’t know how to interact with customers. It would be good if they smiled sometimes as well! It felt like we were an inconvenience. This applies to the reception person and the breakfast staff.

Extremely tired re fixtures and fittings, decor dated, however our room was clean.
No evening meals were being served in the hotel Monday to Friday, no notification prior to our visit.
20% discount given for evening meals at the Crecsent Hotel however a discretionary service charge of 12% was added to our bill without our knowledge. It was only when we asked for an itemised bill that we realised this had been added. Be aware!

In the national peak district park Buxton is lovely. Room was OK but decor starting to look a bit dated. Stayed here many times before but I think the new owners are neglecting it in favour of their new hotel on the crescent round the corner. Breakfast used to be table served cooked fresh and served by lovely elderly waitresses, but is now just a hot buffet style and the staff look as though they do not care about the guests. Strict about 11am checkout too. Would still stay here again though because this hotel has character.

Our stay was just perfect in everyway there is a lovely homely feel at this hotel...very quirky and steeped in history
The room was very clean, our amenities in our room was very good from the biscuits and tea bags etc to the soap on the sink and the shower stuff and moisturising lotion. The bed comfy and very big.. sheets etc were lovely and clean and laundered.
All the staff very pleasant and polite and could not do enough for us during our stay.. we would definitely stay again

The lift is handy, but you're dependant on other guests closing the inner door fully or you can't call it......
For a Champneys brand hotel, very disappointing bathroom toiletries available (20ml tubs of basic items.... we had Elemis when we stayed at Mottram Hall, also Champneys)......
Lovely, historic building. We failed to see any ghosts.......

The hotel feels very in need of renovation. It's not old as in a historic place, it's old as in rundown and scruffy.

It looks like a sense of pride has been lost and even the cleaning is neglected. The bathroom was dirty, the mattress was old, unsupportive and uncomfortable.

While most of the staff were great, they seemed overstretched. Reception was unattended with a 'back soon' sign every time. The lift didn't work. There was virtually nothing available for breakfast despite them knowing about dietary requirements for months in advance and them even making a courtesy call a week in advance to check.

Overall, a highly disappointing stay, not worth the money, and I definitely won't stay there again.

Parking right outside. Alistair(?) on reception was a FONT of knowledge and very friendly. Room was really lovely, great big windows to look out to the park. Towels and linen were as perfectly acceptable. Dinner was an unexpected treat. We had the ham chop and duck dishes. Breakfast was standard included buffet breakfast.

This is a quirky hotel steeped in history which me and my husband loved. On arrival our room was not suitable for our needs, this could have been avioded if i had called head ofour stay. The receptionist and alastair massey were fantastic and offered fantastic alternative room within minutes and this was beyond my expectations as it had a four poster bed and very large. This made our stay so much better and we had a fantastic break. Thank you to all.

Brilliant location. The Deputy Manager was very helpful and efficient. Breakfast was self serve and was delicious and plentiful. Parking outside the hotel is avaliable for 4 hours max during certain times (pay at meter), however you can purchase a 24 hour permit from Reception for £6. We'd definitely stay again.

We stayed here for one night when we went to the theatre. The hotel being only a stone thrown from the theatre and town centre made it a great choice. All areas of hotel were clean as was our room. We were very happy with our pre theatre meal and buffet Breakfast. All staff were helpful and we will certainly stay at The Old Hall again.

There were several excellent bars and restaurants within close proximity.

One of the most important things when staying anywhere is a comfortable nights sleep. We found the bed one of the most comfortable we have slept in for some time. The cleanliness of the room was okay and the staff very attentive and courteous.
Would have given it 5 stars, had it not been for a slightly warm breakfast and problems with the lift not being used correctly. No good when you have mobility problems.
Would still return, as it is in an excellent position for the theatre and like the character/charm of the hotel.
