Lovely old building in the centre of Buxton. Our room was very spacious and comfortable. It was ideal for a short stay.

They seemed to be a bit short-staffed generally and the waiter at breakfast was rather rude. The hotel would benefit from some updating and parking is tricky. There's no free parking at the hotel or nearby and the parking there is outside the hotel was full.

The staff were amazing very helpful friendly and welcoming i had a evening meal and Sunday Roast which were both excellent over all really enjoyed my stay the only issue was the lift which was a old fashioned style with sliding metal guillotine and if the last person to use the lift did not close it the lift would not work!! But apart from that is was very good

When I booked the hotel I got the impression that there was parking there. When we arrived I went into ask where the parking was I was given a map and told to park in a residential street \"5 minutes walk away\". There were some public parking spaces outside and opposite the hotel (only one space opposite when we arrived) but the signs indicated it was maximum of 4 hours so we did park in one of the residential streets suggested. That night when someone checked in we heard the member of hotel staff say that if he paid the hotel (we didn't hear how much) they would give him a permit to put in his car for 24 hours. As my husband has breathing difficulties, if we had been given that option, we would have happily paid so were rather annoyed that I wasn't told about that, either before or on arrival.

I wouldn’t recommend this hotel.
It is very run down and needs money spending on it. The carpet of the entrance to the hotel was dirty and they seemed very short staffed throughout our stay . On our last morning there was only one member of staff working in the breakfast room - he was trying to prepare the food, clean and set tables and welcome and seat guests, which was impossible for him to do all this on his own.
Our room had a large damp mouldy area on the ceiling and the plaster and paint work was coming away. I did ask to speak to the duty manager about this, but she informed me that we couldn’t be moved from our room as the hotel was fully booked . She did offer us a bit of discount on our room , but I would have preferred to have a clean, well maintained room.
I would not return to this hotel .

The entrance is a little lacking and the welcome a little frosty from reception, but the rooms were wonderful and we all slept like babies in our beds. Breakfast was basic, but hot, clean and filling.
Some improvements to be made, but would book again.

Such a great location, with renovated rooms and bathrooms, delicious buffet breakfast, interesting history, and parking available directly outside (subject to availability and about £4 for 24h when purchased from reception).

I was slightly nervous to stay here after reading some of the reviews but don’t be put off. It’s a bargain and full of character and charm - you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

It’s owned by Champneys, and once renovations are complete I’m sure you’ll be paying much more to stay here. In the meantime you get 10% off spa treatments at their very fancy next door hotel.

Lovely old building but tired inside. Stayed in room 13 with the fan from the kitchens outside the window making a racket until 9pm. Window would not stay open so there was no ventilation on a very hot night! The duty manager Maddison found me a fan but it was still horribly hot all night. I would argue that a window that you can open and close is an essential for a hotel room? Some dusty surfaces too.
On the plus side, the location is perfect (£6.00 for 24 hour parking right outside is a bargain!) and the breakfast was terrific.

There were quite a few issues. Firstly, there was no mention of parking charges when I booked but on arrival were told that parking close to the hotel was an extra £6 a day! They did advise about free parking further afield but we decided to park close to the hotel and paid the extra.
Next, the room and bed were both really small - it was a struggle to open the door and not walk straight into the bed!
Next, I appreciate it's a really old building but everything was wonky - the floor went up and down in different areas and even the bed was going downhill to the head!! So much so, I have hiatus hernia and this and the heat made the first night pretty awful!
It was the hottest day of the year so far and the room was terribly hot as there is no air conditioning - obviously they can't be held responsible for the heat but it made the night really uncomfortable.
The next morning at breakfast all was well, the staff looked after us and the food was lovely and there was plenty of it!
When we went back to the room, housekeeping arrived and we asked them to come back later which they did. When we left the room housekeeping were busy in another room and I asked about a fan. The lady very kindly went to look for one but unfortunately couldn't locate one.
However, when we got back that evening they had found us a fan and what a blessed relief that was - the 2nd night was much better!
All in all, an interesting stay, a lovely historic building in need of a lot of TLC but great staff.

We enjoyed our stay here even though the room was very quirky with a very sloping floor. It was a good size though and well equipped. The four post bed looked good but wasn't that comfortable and quite small especially as my husband is 6ft 4. Best to stick to a different room.
Staff were all friendly and helpful and parking outside was just £6 a day. The hotel is well situated within easy reach of bars, restaurants and shops etc

We stayed for 1 night whilst in Buxton to see a show at The Opera House. Our usual hotel was fully booked so though we’d try The Old Hall. The accommodation areas are bordering on dilapidated. Characterful no longer applies. We spoke to other guests and they found the same with one even without a working shower. Major staff shortage. The breakfast area was ok but 5 members of staff had rung in sick ( including the manager, which suggests low morale ) so the food etc was in short supply. The 2 on duty did the best they could but woefully understaffed. Overall, we wouldn’t stay again.

The hotel is in an excellent post for the Opera house and the centre of Buxton. The cost of parking is £6 for 24 hours with one of their permits. The hotel is very quirky with is uneven floors but this adds to the charm. The breakfast was great. Would stop again.

In a phone call from someone from the hotel ( turns out they were from the Crescent hotel, owned by by same company,) I specifically asked about breakfast time as we had to be at Assembly rooms at 8 am. I was assured breakfast started at 7.30, even on a Saturday. On arrival I found this was not the case. The person on reception assured us that it would be be sorted with either the chef coming in early or us being walked round to other hotel. Saturday morning staff knew nothing about this but did take us to other hotel.
The lift was an act of faith; we only used it going up, despite mobility issues , and twice had to get a member of staff to get the lift as the door did not always close properly. Meal in the bar was excellent…but was the restaurant ever open for anything other than breakfast?
We also had to ask for more toilet roll; even budget hotels leave you a spare!

The building is the oldest hotel in England so you can't expect it to be all shiny and gleaming. But it is very clean, slightly quirky and off shape and the floors were solid but uneven at times. This just added to the charm for us though as we live in a 90yr old house so it didn't surprise us. The room was very clean, the bathroom was nicely refurbished and came with nice toiletries provided. The bed was slightly firm but that's a personal preference so we can't complain about that. Checked in early as our room was ready. Alistair on reception was fantastic, funny little tales and lots of local information to help us settle in. The were no evening meals being served so we ate next door and were given a 20% discount voucher to do so which is a nice touch. We had the fish and chips in Darwins bar, huge portion and well cooked. Breakfast was excellent and comes with a nice view over the Pavilion Gardens if you get the right table. Nice hotel. Not too expensive and great for the one night we stayed

Although the hotel is a unique property, very old and quirky and in a great spot in the town which was good, it is very tired. The room we stayed in whilst clean needed complete redecoration and the furniture needs to be replaced and the same applies to the hallways and corridors.

Charming hotel with in the perfect location for exploring Buxton and the area, gorgeous character features, spacious room four poster a nice touch, loved the old oak furniture, spotlessly clean, fluffy towels and Elemis toiletries.
The dining area is a bit plain and we were let down by the steak albeit it steak night, but the management sorted it out without quibble. Breakfast, breakfast was excellent, what's more the waitresses were all lovely and friendly. Enjoyed our stay and would go back..

The room was a good size, with good storage. Everything was fresh, clean and tidy. The decor and furniture were a little old fashioned but in a charming way. I had a comfortable sleep. The shower was really nice. Thankfully, although the room was well-situated in the town, the street was not very noisy. Breakfast had a good variety of food on offer and all the staff were very friendly. I really enjoyed my stay.

This is a well run hotel. It is an old hotel so, you must expect things to be a little unmoden.
It was clean, staff were helpful and was a pet friendly hotel. Parking outside on the road but given a pass to place in your car. The bed was lovely, we got a good nights sleep. The shower was easy to use and over a bath.
The breakfast was excellent, with a choice of continental, cereal and/or full English. Lovely smiling staff first thing in the morning.
At checkout we were asked if everything had been okay from the lovely gentleman on reception. We travel alot all over the world and this hotel and staff were as good as some of the 4 and 5 stars we stay at. It's not always about how modern a place is, sometimes its about the history of the building and the vibe it gives you. There is a few areas that are in need of a little work but that is understandable with the age of the building. We would definitely stay here again.

Its an old Hotel so you expect age but there was hair on the bed and it seemed rather dated everywhere. The hotel reception rang before our visit and I enquired if I needed to pre book for dinner, was told no, but when we got there the restaurant was shut anyway and we was told to use next door! Our room should have been a family twin but again when we got there we was put in a standard double, on enquiry the staff were helpful and we were moved to a twin. breakfast was again ok, everything was ok, nothing special but ok.

The Old Hall Hotel is very well situated to local shops, pubs, cafes and just across the road from the Opera House. We booked breakfast with our stay which was good food and choices, it is a traditional English breakfast with cereal, toast, jams, honey and croissants. We have stayed here a few times and would go back again. The building or part of it is very old and has historic charm, it is clean throughout and staff are helpful and friendly. It has history for example Mary Queen of Scots stayed there as did, I was told, Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Clean and comfortable room with a view of the park. Had to put the kettle on the floor to plug it in as it was the only available socket. Good choice for breakfast. Had to go and ask for tea and coffee at breakfast as the 2 staff on duty were busy tidying up and refilling the breakfast buffet. Sign at restaurant entrance said please wait to be seated - there was no-one around to do this so just went in.

No evening meals were being served in the hotel Monday to Friday, no notification prior to our visit.
20% discount given for evening meals at the Crecsent Hotel however a discretionary service charge of 12% was added to our bill without our knowledge. It was only when we asked for an itemised bill that we realised this had been added. Be aware!

We did not have a pet...but unfortunately you could smell a doggy smell in our room. I thought they would have designated rooms for dog's...obviously not.
