We have stayed at this hotel many times. It has not been updated since the 1980s, but its location, cleanliness and staff always made it our hotel of choice in the area. But I don’t think we’ll be back. Now there is no mini fridge in the room, 2 out 3 elevators appear permanently broken, the plumbing has issues and there is just a general sense that the owner is unwilling to invest even a single Euro. It’s a shame. A real shame.

Of three elevators, one was operational. Unfortunately it was also not the one leading to the sauna, so you had enquire how to reach it. Upon check-in no information was given whatsoever, and room contained no info, such as the mini-bar. The hotel has also cut down on breakfast severely. It used to be one of the best we've had, but this time was very poor.

We couldn’t have been more satisfied

After many hours on the road, we finally arrived at the \"Carathotel Basel/Weil am Rhein\" and we couldn’t have been more satisfied. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, and our room was absolutely perfect. We were given a huge, comfortable bed, and everything was clean and well-prepared.

We truly can’t fault a single thing and would wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing and pleasant stay.

The Hotel (especially the room) looks run down. The room had AC which did not work, fortunately one could open the window to get the heat out. Staff was friendly and helpful and the location is good. Overall the stay was ok for what we were looking for. But again, the rooms could use a refresh.

The room was clean and silent, it was possible to sleep very well. The parking place is quite big so I could park my car easily. The breakfast is without buffet and a bit limiting for me because I love to eat both sweet and continental breakfast, so ordering from a fixed breakfast choice that was not possible. The breakfast is quite expensive if you don't book it with the room.

Would definitely recommend!

I highly recommend that everyone should look beyond the big expensive city of Basel and look into Germany for accommodations. Although this hotel had slightly outdated décor, one can see that this hotel, and it's staff, have a lot of pride in their work place, and they offer great service. My room was spotless, had all the necessities except for air conditioning but thankfully, it was a cool enough night that it wasn't necessary.
The hotel offered a plentiful and fresh breakfast buffet that was fit for a king. Everything was wonderful at the Carathotel. I really commend the staff that was very welcoming.

When you’re on the 8th floor, you need the lifts to work. With three lifts that shouldn’t be a concern, but when only one slow lift is working then that mars the overall experience. Some guests with baggage waiting 10 minutes to get up to their room. The staff on reception were apologetic, but this clearly had been an issue for some time.

The hotel is best suited to those who come by car, and is in an industrial estate.

Be aware that public transportation options are somewhat limited in the immediate vicinity, for example a 20 minute walk to the nearest Basel Tram stop. OK in sunny June, but in the wetter colder months you would likely need to book a taxi.

The food was excellent.

The property location was a good bit away from transport, room was quite dirty with a bug even being the bathroom cup and staff also being fairly unhelpful - my partner had also left her Fitbit watch in the room and we have contacted the hotel to try and have it sent back but instead it seems to have been stolen instead as there is recent activity within the app. Try and avoid if possible!

The hotel has lost its former glory

We have stayed at the hotel several times before and were always very satisfied and loved it. We don’t know what’s going on — whether the management has changed or something else is happening at the moment.
The staff can hardly speak German. When checking in, you now have to enter and register everything yourself on a tablet, even though we are regular guests and already registered. We find this very inconvenient.
The bathroom was also not cleaned properly.
Out of three elevators, two were out of order.
No money left for electricity?

In addition, breakfast is no longer included, and you end up paying significantly more for everything including breakfast. The beloved breakfast buffet is gone, and you can now only choose from fixed breakfast menus (€19 per person).
The breakfast was good and plentiful, but we noticed a lot of unnecessary food waste.
On top of that, the staff were completely overwhelmed, both in terms of language and the number of guests, and we had to wait a long time to get a table and then again for the breakfast to arrive.

Our advice to management: go back to the old system.
Otherwise, you’ll lose your customers.
We, for our part, won’t be coming back.

In der Beschreibung steht, das Hotel liegt zentral – das ist absurd. Es liegt weit außerhalb im Industriegebiet und ist sehr schlecht zu erreichen!!! – Es gibt auch keinen Transfer, wie beschrieben…! – Ich habe bei meiner Ankunft versucht, die Rezeption zu erreichen (eine halbe Stunde lang) Und niemand ging ran!!!

When I checked in I was asked to pay for the room though I was sure I had paid when I booked but didn't have the details at that time. It was eventually sorted but I am now having to wait 5 days to be refunded. The whole process of checking in was slow as they work with one tablet and if that's being used you may need to wait a while.
Rooms are spacious and clean though the hotel is a bit dated

Not a bad hotel, but only one elevator was working and had to carry luggage down four flights of stairs when checking out.

Also - getting coffee at breakfast is almost impossible. It is brought to the table by a server, but it is so busy that it takes too long. I went to the lobby and purchased a coffee from the front desk.

The staff were absolutely fantastic and extremely helpful. The breakfast included a great variety with food to suit all tastes.
We stayed here to visit Basle which was a short tram ride away. It took about half an hour to get to the tram station.
I think this would be a good hotel to visit if on a motorbike tour as there's a big car park and an excellent bar. The perfect way to wind down and relax.
Our room was a great size and very comfortable.
Definitely worth a visit as you won't be disappointed.

I was very surprised with breakfast! It was full German style one and I liked it a lot. Parking was great and close to a grocery market by walk.
By the war I’m mexican ethnicity and but the Mexican restaurant wasn’t pleasant.. I felt somewhat fusion with Italian or American Italian style. Food wasn’t authentic (I mean I understand but 😬) and some of food we ordered wasn’t even 1 person portion.. I don’t think I’m going to trust the public review anymore lol since everyone said the Mexican restaurant in the hotel was amazing! It’s just not even close to Mexican food.

We stayed one week at Carathotel Basel during Eurovision. Our room was spacious and clean even being a little older.
Staff was helpful and wonderful. Breakfast was an amazing spread of everything you could possibly want.

Transportation into Basel was about a 15 minute walk to the tram or you could catch a bus across the street, but we enjoyed the walk.

The only (minor) issue was that there was only 1 elevator working while we were there, and sometimes the wait for it was quite long.

One of the lifts was broken which meant I had to wait 20 mins to get downstairs. I have a disability therefore could walk down 9 flights of stairs. Most staff were exceptional except one receptionist who really needs to consider if she doesn’t like the job get another one. Her customer service was terrible. No facilities in the room, no tea/coffee, no standard shampoo etc.

Besuche das Hotel seit Jahren. Es war immer okay. Doch es hat sich einiges verändert. Abgesehen das Hundertschaften der Polizei das Frühstück plündern wurde nicht investiert. Früher wurde bei Abreise ein Wasser gereicht und es gab kostenlosen Kaffee in der Lobby. Beides abgeschafft. Die Zimmer sind stark bewohnt. Leider gab es hier Erneuerung. Im Gegenteil, zum Beispiel die Duschbrause wurde billigst ersetzt und war bereits wieder defekt. Die Böden Sind abgeranzt. Löcher in den Polstern im Restaurant. Der Hammer ist nun das es beim Frühstück nur noch einen Kaffee gibt. Der zweite muss bezahlt werden! Auch an der Rezeption spricht man kein deutsch mehr. Englisch ist hier wichtig.
Gefühlt wird hier versucht das letzte Geld aus dem Gast rauszuholen.
Ohne mich in Zukunft!!!

Back to the 1970s Time travel in Weil am Rhein

A hotel out of the 1970s which unfortunately got stuck in that time.

My room was not cleaned and one of the days I didn't have soap, clean towels, the trash was not taken. I had to go down to the reception to look for the towels and the soap. Also, the breakfast buffet included ONLY 1 cup of coffee. If I wanted a second cup of coffee I had to pay for it!!!

I was very disappointed to see the condition of the hotel. Firstly the hotel not in Basel so please be careful when Carat Hotel shows up in your search. Secondly the rooms are very basic, no phone or kettle. Another annoying thing was that only one lift was working and then that too breakdown and didn’t get fixed for two days.

It’s understaffed and surrounding isn’t great. Best part was the staff was friendly and helpful.

The owner needs to get things in order and bring the hotel to raise the standard.

Das Hotel liegt in einem Industriegebiet nahe der Autobahn Basel - Karlsruhe und eignet sich daher hervorragend für eine Zwischenübernachtung auf einer längeren Reise. Trotz Autobahnnähe war unser Zimmer absolut ruhig , sehr gut ausgestattet und es gibt kostenlose Parkplätze. Das mexikanische Restaurant im Hotel ist sehr empfehlendswert und das Frühstück lässt keine Wünsche offen.
Wir können das Hotel wirklich empfehlen und würden es jederzeit wieder buchen.

Es gibt keine Rechnung beim Einchecken (ich war nur eine Nacht da). Und beim Auschecken ist man überfordert. Anstellen, und die Daten fehlen, obwohl man den Meldeschein ausgefüllt hat.

Every two weeks I travel to my property in Italy and Basle is the perfect midway point from Calais so to find the Carathotel in the perfect location just off the motorway with a large free car park is fantastic.Always friendly staff (even during Covid)large rooms with the very much appreciated bathtub.But as others have mentioned the breakfast choice and quality is my main reason for staying there. I think it offers incredible value for money also.

Having discovered this hotel quite a few years ago I always try to book it if it’s available as it is quite superb.Great location and easy to find.Large free car park and always friendly reception staff,this time it was the charming Katerina who had a genuine persona and couldn’t have been more helpful.Very large room plus with added bonus of a bathtub.A nice welcome touch is the glass bottle of complimentary sparkling water.Saving the best comment for last, breakfast (most important meal of the day)You are spoilt for choice with the huge selection of hot and cold items.It is very rare in mainland Europe to get a good selection of hot cooked items for breakfast but perfectly prepared scrambled eggs,two types of sausages and bacon!! As a Englishman the only thing lacking was baked beans.The final nice touch is you are able to grab a takeaway coffee as you depart.Thank you to the owners, management and of course all the wonderful staff.

Despite our average rating scores we enjoyed our stay. Room and furnishings old and tired but everything worked as it should. Big windows with great view. Some problems with housekeeping which was very limited and we had to ask. Very good breakfast and the evening restaurant meals were also enjoyable and not too expensive. We enjoyed being able to hire Brompton bikes. 5 minute walk to Aldi and nearest bus stop. 15 minute walk over into France. Plenty of parking and the location is probably more suited to those arriving by car. Some good outside space.

We enjoyed our stay at the Carathotel, which was ideally located for access into Basel by tram, and well priced. The breakfast was excellent, a really good selection including gluten free bread and muffins. The hotel's mexican-style restaurant in the evening was also very good, again with gluten free options marked and very well priced. The hotel itself is a little tired given its age, but very well maintained and clean, and the bathroom particularly was well equipped, with great lighting and a bath. The hotel is actually in Germany, not Switzerland, which means that guests are not entitled to a Basel Tourist pass, however, the much lower price of the hotel rooms more than compensates for this. It is about at 10 minute walk to the tram station from the hotel and then only a 10 minute ride to Basel AltStadt. The hotel information stated that there was a shuttle to the airport, which is not the case, they simply book a taxi. We were told the cost would be no more than 35 euros, but it actually cost 45.

Excellent hotel

Working in Basel so booked into a superior room on 9th floor. Very spacious with a table of 4 chairs so easy to work and have dinner. Fan included so no air conditioning unit but comfortable. Nice large windows so lots of breeze. Shower is high pressure so amazing to use and overall very comfortable.
Breakfast was continental and lots of options to choose from. Will defo book again!
Uber is difficult to call BUT taxi is available on demand at reception.

This is an older hotel with spacious rooms and bathrooms. It could do with some updating but the great included breakfast makes up for this. The Mexican restaurant looks interesting but didn’t have dinner.

Great stay, lovely staff

We had an event to attend in Basel and we picked Carat hotel (in Germany) . Such a good decision, big clean, light room, very clean and comfortable but above all very good service from the staff. Leon at the reception helped us with all our needs and George organized an amazing ack breakfast for my wife who had to leave very early in the morning. Their in house restaurant Hacienda is very good also. we had breakfast there.

Great stay in Dec 2023!

We had a wonderful stay in December of 2023. The bed was comfortable, room warm but had a standing fan for some circulation. Hotel staff very nice and helpful and the best part of all was the breakfast. By far our best hotel breakfast in a 16 day trip across 4 countries and 8 different hotels.

We had a best stay in Carathotel. Hotel staff and hotel is awesome. Breakfast is fantastic, rooms are spacious and it is very clean and sound proof.

Great 1980s hotel in mint condition

The Carathotel is like a trip back to the 1980s. Everything is original except maybe the television but the hotel is well maintained and everything is clean and everything works.

The breakfast that came with the room was particularly good. There were oranges and a station with a press for us to squeeze our own juice.
