Overall, I had a great stay at the Riu Guanacaste. The resort offers beautiful amenities, and there were plenty of activities and areas to enjoy. While some staff members came across as somewhat rude, many others were genuinely friendly, helpful, and made us feel welcome. One downside was the pool towel service, as towels frequently ran out and guests sometimes had to wait a long time for replacements. Despite that inconvenience, I enjoyed my stay and appreciated everything the resort had to offer.

Hotel is aesthetically beautiful but it’s the small details that makes it more a 3 star instead of a 5 star hotel. Main issue is the bathrooms and the smells. Its smells like rotten eggs when you flush the toilets to the point it would make the room and bathroom unbearable to be in. Switched rooms and same issue. Same issue was in the public bathrooms also. Then the second issue, is the lack of room service option. Having a fussy toddler have to sit in a dinning hall to be able to eat was not ideal. Would have done better in a calm indoor environment like bedroom instead.

Selected this resort as it was within our price range for five people after including airfare. I knew based off the reviews that most of the restaurants were buffet. Unfortunately, all of the food is about the same from day to day. Yes there are different menus in all different restaurant locations but it’s the same food prepared differently with the same flavors over and over again. Disappointed to find out that after 9:30 there is no food options at all. I was also disappointed with the amount of flies inside of restaurants and fruit flies at the inside bars so thick they were on all the liquor bottles, juices, fruit it didn’t matter they were everywhere behind the bar. It was also annoying not to be able to get pool towels when you wanted them because I guess people hoard them or don’t ever return them. Not sure what the resort does when they’re in season. I guess nobody gets pool towels. The most disappointing issue was the air condition in the room. It will not allow you to go below 22°C, which is 71°F. That would be great if it would get there, but it never got cooler than 24°C which is about 75°F. It was a muggy 75°F at best. This was the first time staying at a RIU resort and most likely will be last.

The grounds were beautiful, the food was the major turn off. They had a huge variety in the buffets and 5 restaurants but not only the flavor and quality was low as the lines to get in the Asian were incredibly long and we were not able to make a reservation to the steak house.
I would not stay there again because of the food and how crowded the hotel felt at times. The restaurants and the pools were always packed.

It was really good. The beach was nice and clean, lots of people trying to sell things, but not really the fault of the resort. Pools were awesome, lots of space, multiple pool bars, drinks were strong, staff was helpful. Snack bar fully stocked during the day. Multiple restaurants with lots of variety. The steakhouse and the asian food restaurant were especially good - you will not go hungry! Busy but since the resort was so large, it didn't feel crowded.

The resort was better than expected! Food was excellent & room was very nice. Enjoyed the snorkeling & fishing excursions right from the beach. Caught a dozen red snapper on the 2-3 hour fishing trip & took a couple to Chef Aldo who prepared them especially for our family for dinner that night. Best meal we’ve ever eaten!

The food was good in the main buffet great selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My only issue is that the sweets section where the donuts and cakes should be covered more better to avoid flies from getting on the desserts.The Italian restaurant was good as well.The service was and staff were great.
The room was very spacious and clean. A nice size television, but there were only two English stations that I could watch throughout the week. I would definitely recommend staying here again. Enjoyed the pool and the beach.
I did not see that There was not much shopping in the area.

Staff often gave incorrect information. I feel like this was done to get you out of their face or pass you on to someone else. We had a group of 6 and we wanted to eat at the Steakhouse, which requires a reservation. We were told that one person could book and to place the number of people in the comments. When we arrived the only person allowed to dine was the one that made the reservation. Another problem was getting clean towels in my room and at the pool. I reserved the steam room/ jacuzzi spa and was told I needed to bring my pool towel. There were no clean towels but the staff told me I could get a towel at the spa. I was not allowed to proceed with the reservation without my towel and was told I needed to go to front desk to get one. These places are not very far but not the closest and requires a bit of walking. This was an issue for me because I had injured myself using there water taxi. Which brings me to my next issue. I would not recommend taking the water taxi to go to the other side of the island, just go by car. It will take longer but I feel it is safer. The boat used for taxi was not anchored but held by men and when water is rough, you can fall and injure yourself. I thought I broke my toe but it was sprained. I had to get medical attention. There is a doctor at the resort and he was very good and helpful. Also the waitress in American Country was rude as hell and did not get orders correct and when told that the order was wrong she became angry. TBC…

It was nice but couldn't been better more so the location then the facility. Should've had better restaurants. Activities are limited and there are no photo ops like the other locations of the country signs. The room was hot in the main area.the room I got didn't match the one I booked but it was still OK. Only one bathroom for 3ppl..but 3 beds. I booked a two bathroom room. Overall I won't go back but as far as the franchise I will visit others

We reached out to the hotel twice prior to our trip about airport shuttle and requested information on how we can arrange transportation. We never received any responses to our inquiries. We ended up renting a car last minute so we were not stuck at the airport.

All \"restaurants\" are buffets. So if you like Buffet's, this is the place to go. Only one sit down restaurant which is a steakhouse but you must make a reservation through their app. If you are unable to download their app (like us) you have no chance of getting a reservation. We went to customer service three times and tried to make a reservation and no one would help us. Extremely frustrating. We ended up eating outside the hotel every day.

The \"hotel credit\" is not your typical hotel credit where you can use it for an actual service. They should actually call it \"coupons\" that have values between $5-$25 off a particular service. In order to use the full \"hotel credit\" you are required to spend several thousand dollars more which will still average about 10% discount.

The staff was nice and the hotel was clean. My son and I enjoyed exploring the country.

The hotel was beautiful, the entertainment was mediocre, only timed things happening and sometimes that wasn't even scheduled correctly! The beach amenities can be stepped up! There were just a few beach chairs set out and were taken, the rest of them were chained up! The beach vendors were allocated right off the entrance to the beach from the pools. That could've been pushed back some, it was off putting and looked tacky! The biggest downfall to an all-inclusive option was the service. No option to servers other than occasionally at the main bar. Other than that you have to go and get your own drinks. Beware that there are no top shelf options. The most you'll get is Tito's and Bacardi, so drinks were weak! Food was great- majority of
Buffet options. Nothing was served other than the steakhouse and you have to make a reservation through their app- only able to make 2 reservations at a time!

The hospitality at this resort was really bad, especially because we spoke English only. Everything we asked for they treated it like an inconvenience to them. We would ask for drinks at the pool bar and they wouldn’t make them. At dinner we wouldn’t be served drinks or desert while other parties who spoke Spanish at the next table over would. The front desk staff was rude to us when we checked in because we booked the standard room. The hotel was fine and the aesthetic was nice, seems renovated recently. But the staff is what made the experience overall sub-par. Also the beaches are all public so as soon as you get to the sand you are bombarded with locals trying to sell you things. There’s also absolutely no umbrellas, and we weren’t able to get lounge chairs, so if you really want to go to a beach I would say don’t come here. It was close to the Diamanté adventure park and had a shuttle going every half an hour so that was nice. But overall I don’t think we would ever come back here again. I’ve been to other Riu’s in Mexico and Dominican Republic that were better.

Lovely all inclusive. Very clean and nice updates. Room was clean and tastefully decorated with plenty of space to unpack. A/C hit the spot and the ceiling fan was a great addition.

Appreciated plenty of pool choices to spread out and enjoy. The restaurant selection was great and food was really good. Our group thoroughly enjoyed the sushi restaurant. I would suggest they need to add hand wash stations closer to the entrances of the restaurants, especially the buffets. Or at the very least hand sanitizer stations.

Front counter staff could be friendlier and more welcoming. Seemed bothered if we needed help with anything.

I would not stay here again. They did a horrible job with out room after reports of ants infestation and no English channels on the television. They waited 2 days to change my room. Staff was not helpful at all. The food was horrible. The steakhouse was not good. I would not recommend this place to stay in costa rica.

However our non alcoholic drinks was made to perfection by the female bartender who knew us by name.

The room was spacious for 3 people. We booked for 1 king and 1 twin size bed. The room was very clean with a sizeable balcony overlooking the forest. We enjoyed the restaurants a lot and tried every one of them. You will never go hungry and thirsty staying here. The pools were huge and the beach was only steps away from the resort. Overall, we had a great time.

The property was very clean and the recent renovations definitely improved the room amenities, etc. In order to get around, there is a lot of walking involved. This is something to keep in mind for those with limited mobility. There was a festival going on the latter part of our stay that overtook the resort. If you’re looking for tranquil and quiet, I would research the time you plan to go. However, the beach was fantastic and the pools were wonderful! The staff was super friendly as well.

First of all when you have guests who are in their 60s you don’t put them in the farthest room away from the main area. Had to walk 1/4 mile one way. Additionally not that they will do anything about it but we had all of our Sun Block stolen from our room. It was the staff as they were the only ones who could access the room. I will never go back!! By the way Sunblock is very expensive there!!

The facility is great. The hotel seems to be understaffed. They need more people on the restaurants to clean and maintain food. Food runs out, the kitchen is constantly running out of food trays. Also I noticed the chefs don’t use gloves. I think people handling food should always wear gloves to touch food.

The restaurant food and system was horrible. Everything in the buffet was poorly refilled and it was for the most part cold. There is no towels, and you are granted a key card for 1 pool towel to which there are only 2 swap out stations that close early therefore you carry a dirty towel until you are able to exchange it. The 24 hours snacks are nacho chips with no cheese, we asked if it would be refilled and were told they were out. A fridge full of squishes hotdogs and burgers frozen for you to try to cook in 1 miniature grill. The beach access was dirty and there is no where to sit, no towels and no access to alcohol out there. The steakhouse was a predefined meal and limited menu. On my second night my room flooded and when I called the front desk they said they would send housekeeping. Housekeeping left all the wet towels behind on the floor and said it would most likely happen again. Checkout is at noon, at 8 am someone opened my door even though I was still in the room with my do not disturb sign on the door.

Dinner time was always a problem because the restaurants had a cut off time; so we had to eat the buffet food several time. The restaurants would turn you away even though you could see empty seat. Although they only have one good restaurant and that was the Chinese restaurant. While at dinner you can only order wine no other kind of alcoholic beverage.

I'll admit, I don't usually book all inclusive properties. The same food over many days gets boring, even if you liked it the first day. The restaurants on site, outside of the buffet, were randomly closed, day by day. The Steakhouse was disappointing, no need to try and go back a second time. Desserts across the board were artificial flavors. The beach is nice. Pools were good. Waterslide park was fun. Staff was cheerful. Good gym facility. Mini-bar restocking was random. The double room we booked turned into a King room without notice. General property policy was - good is enough.

This is such a beautiful resort. The room was spotless, and we had everything we needed for a wonderful stay. What truly made this vacation special was the connection we made with the staff, especially Lizandro at one of the outdoor bars.

From our very first interaction, Lizandro took the time to get to know our preferences and would create personalized drinks he thought we would enjoy. He was always attentive, greeted us with a smile, and consistently provided exceptional service. Whenever we visited the bar, we knew exactly who to look for because he always made us feel welcome and taken care of.

We truly appreciated the effort and care he put into making our experience memorable. We look forward to coming back and hope to see him and his crew by the pool again on our next visit!

This place is nicely maintained. The entertainment was AWESOME. The staff don't speak much English so it was hard to communicate. They would just give you whatever they thought you said. So in my case it was mostly wrong and a little challenging. The toilet had a horrible toxic smell every time it was flushed. Didn't like that at all. Need more good food places to dine. The best ones to eat at were first come first serve. Not fun standing in line early just to HOPE to get something to eat on vacation. Overall, this place was ok. However, this was one and done for me.

Tons of activities, great pools. The bar staff in particular was a standout- Rizo at Filadelfia and all the guys at Tamarindo. Don’t sleep on the live music at tamarindo before you go to dinner. It’s fantastic and underrated.
The spa is expensive but worth it.
Careful if you have a bee allergy! At least in shoulder season- the bees are (no exaggeration) abundant.
I was a solo woman traveler and not only did I feel totally safe, but I met lots of great people, both among my fellow guests and the staff.

You get what you pay for. Solid 3 star hotel. Food wasn’t great or bad. If your kids can survive on hamburgers, hotdogs, and chicken nuggets, this resort shouldn’t be an issue. Our room was dirty at check-in, the toilet water had an awful smell (all rooms), and the pool waters didn’t feel clean. Tried to use the hotel credits for golf (main reason we booked this hotel), and they are very misleading with advertising. I’ve stayed at other RIU resorts and this place isn’t in my top choices for future return.

The resort itself was pretty nice. Rooms were over all clean. The recent renovations were really nice— very modern and picturesque. Food options were decent— but the restaurants outside of the buffet have very limited hours and seating. There is beach access from the hotel with beautiful views, but there is no seating provided from the hotel. There are some things that could have been done better. For example, there was a bandaid and cocktail garnishes that were left on the pool bar/tables in the middle of the pool that were there for two days — makes you question how often they clean the pools. When the resort got busier, guests would leave their cups and trash on the stairwells or elevator. On that note— please be well aware (bc we weren’t), that this is a very heavily tik-tok advertised resort…. Our first two days there were nice, but as more people checked in, we realized there were a lot of tik-tok wannabe “influencers” at the resort… super loud, super obnoxious, and be ready to see tri-pods set up all over and twerking in the pool around your kids. I don’t even have kids and I was cringing hard. Therefore, this may not be the best choice if you’re trying to relax or bring your family, but if you want an aesthetic all-inclusive with decent food, and can ignore weirdo wannabe influencer behavior, it’s not too bad.

Property was clean and room was great. However, most of the staff was less than friendly, beach was not comfortable. We had to fight for chairs and pestered by people trying to sell us. Finally, food at night was kinda nasty and there were no options to eat anything good after hours.

Upon arriving after a red eye flight, we didn’t have a room. I had emailed and called the front desk prior to be sure my check in was held for the day before so that we were able to get into the room very early in the morning(8 am). As in, I explicitly paid for the rooms a day before arriving and then spoke directly to them so they were aware of when we would be there. First, front desk couldn’t even find my reservation, then nonchalantly said they gave them away. Long story short, we couldn’t get into the rooms until 1pm and by the time they put our luggage away, there was no food available except for a few pieces of fruit and small snack items in one of the lounges. We got no instructions about the layout of the hotel and where to go for anything and so we just wandered around a bit. That was all disappointing.
Once in the rooms, and deciding to figure out the resort by talking to other patrons and staff- everything was very good! Pools are open 24 hours, which is amazing to go for a late night dip before bed. The buffet is set 3x a day and they mix up the items enough to stay interesting. Steakhouse is reservation only through their app-more people had issues with that but we never went. The sushi/japanese restaurant is also buffet style and absolutely delicious. Short walk to the beach, which is public- and you will be deluged constantly by people selling the usual items but they are all friendly enough.
No servers come by at the pools or stage areas. Would go again.
