A lovely relaxing stay in a beautiful setting.

I stayed at the resort for 5 evenings and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a very relaxing few days. I particularly enjoyed the friendliness of the staff all the way from the manager to the bar/ restaurant, reception and cleaning staff. Everyone was very friendly and courteous. The accommodation allocated was very comfortable and spotlessly clean (cleaned every day). The pool area was large with sufficient space for all those who wished to use it. The gym was well equipped. I ate in the restaurant each evening and the food was excellent and reasonably priced. Breakfast was provided and a wide range of options available. The hotel / resort sits directly on the beach (fine sand no stones) and it excellent for walking several miles in each direction.👍 The nearest shops are 2 miles away (30 minute walk) or 10 mins if you have a car. If you don’t have access to a car then your only option in order to get to the resort is a taxi from either Jaco or Quepos which will cost approx $50 from Jaco. To summarise a very enjoyable and relaxing stay which I would heartily recommend.

We enjoyed Sunset Del Mar, but many things werre broken or in poor condition. I went to sit by the pool and the lounger collapsed and my back was wrenched. Many things didn't work properly.The staff was very nice abd Esterrillos is spectacular.

Great location. Beautiful setting and pool area. Shallets pleasant but very little wardrobe space (OK for a weekend stay). Plumbing a big problem. Toilet did not work in first shallet. Took 24 hours to prepare a suitable alternative which had water leak by toilet. Restaurant pleasant but choice of food not great. Staff pleasant but not particularly helpful or friendly.

Everything is stained, from the couches and rugs in your room to the pool loungers. The one time we had housekeepers they put a fitted sheet on that was stained with blood. When I told the front desk they were off put and seemed like I was crazy for asking for new sheets. The property was clearly a beautiful place a few years ago and has great potential but the current staff isn’t maintaining it. It was nearly deserted so the privacy and beach front is the only saving grace here.

Unfortunately we had a bad experience with management. After spending quite a bit of money on a fishing charter the staff said they would freeze our fish so we could bring it back to FL with us. Upon check out we went to retrieve our fish and to our shock it wasn't frozen. There was now no way for us to take it with us so we said they could have it but we would need to be compensated in some way for their mistakes (they admitted to taking it out of their freezer to make room from their products. That is completely understandable however they never told us so we could make other arrangements. We would have found another option to keep the fish frozen had they told us they needed the space) we asked that they comp our last dinner with them to make it even. They strung us around for 30min without making a decision but we were checking out and had to leave to make our flight... Because of the hold up we ended up missing our flight as well. After weeks of emailing the resort to make amends they have stoped responding. It's a shame they admitted to the mistake but still won't take accountability and make it right.

The most important thing about going on a relaxing vacation is being able to sleep in a comfortable bed and Sunset definitely delivered with fresh, plush bedding comfortable mattress with topper, and great pillows. Rooms are very clean and modern. Hotel is right on a nice big, quiet beach. With a pool and restaurant on site what more could you possibly need? Desk manager is awesome, the restausant staff, grounds and security staff all very freindly and accommodating. Any problems are dealt with efficiently and to your satisfaction. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice relaxing few days away from the hustle and bustle of the hire traffic areas and at a reasonable price relative to other hotels in Costa Rica.The only drawback, if you can call it that, is that this property is best suited to someone with a car. A backpcker will have a long walk off the main road to get here. Although there may be a shuttle from the main road to the hotel my wife tells me.

The location of the Beach, this was a clean, friendly staff, if you want to tour a rented car makes it much easier. There are other choices for drinks and food walkable along the beach. This property while I was there was being worked on and updated daily. The pool was great I used everyday. I had very good meals. The price and quality compared to other places I eat was excellent. Only one meal I would have rated not good (pasta seafood). The only thing that would have made this stay better for me would be more people at the resort as I traveled alone. Once the new management has completed there updates to this property it will be a 10 out of 10. At this time I would rate as a 7 out of 10 due to the staff, location and how clean the rooms and common area were.

The property has a nice long beachfront access. Access is from a paved/unpaved entry. The property overall is old and not kept well. We ran out of hot water on several occasions. The water pressure is low and the manager told us that they do not have a water tank and pump in place and have requested the owners for one. Breakfast is pre-cooked self-help buffet style. Nothing to write home about. We skipped it and bought elsewhere.

Room were overcrowded with ancient furniture that cramped the room. The bathroom fixtures were all worn out and not cleaned. The bed overnight was not even dusted or the bathrooms were not cleaned. The place i understaffed and for the price per night seems to be overcharging.

The pool setting is nice but the pool water level was below that of the skimmers and the pool was full of bugs and debris from the trees. The ocean was better for a swim!

The black sand beach off the resort was amazing. The sunset from the beach is appropriate for the resorts name.

The manager and the limited staff they had were polite and courteous. They were put in a difficult situation by the owners lack of investment in the propety's upkeep and operation.

I would not go back here again till they staff up. Make arrangements for water and clean up the place.

This place should be condemned!! It’s unsafe, unsanitary and infested!! Nothing at this property is maintained. The public bathrooms haven’t been cleaned in VERY long time. I can’t even guess. Everything is rusted, falling apart, ALL exterior electrical outlets are broken/rated/dangerous. Flea infested cat lying on seated areas is VERY obvious by the car hair and critters. Soggy Garbage laying orotund pool deck. Rotten wood and plaster falling off of buildings that actually have full trees growing on the roofs!!!

Planned a relaxing 3 night stay with my pregnant wife, we love Esterillos. But we had an awful experience.
Hotel is under staffed, barely open and way overpriced.
Without any prior warning we were informed that the restaurant was closed til further notice.
Pool was unkept and untreated.
Beds were deformed and full of bed bugs.
Room glass doors to the beach were kept closed by what amounted to a paper clip.
Can fully understand that the hotel is getting back on its feet after the pandemic but they charge $450 for their better rooms. They charge like a high end resort and maybe put out a hostal level service.
And it is just a matter of service quality and maintenance. Rooms and the grounds are very pretty on a great location!!!
We had to checkout after 1 night.
Do not visit this property please.
Truly feel robbed and remain appalled by the dishonesty of the hotel.

5* accommodation. We booked this stay knowing it could have been a 50/50 from the past reviews. New management is in place now and they are turning things around.

The accommodation is the best I have ever stayed it, it is true 5*. Serious money has been spent on the hotel.

The staff were great and couldn’t do enough for you.

Only thing is they have been plagued from past reviews meaning it was a bit quiet and the staff are all new and finding their feet so didn’t always know where the cups were kept etc.

Overall highly recommend.

It’s so unfortunate that the management here wasn’t better. This place has the potential to be so amazing…great location, on a beach break, beautiful grounds, and the rooms are nice. But it’s obvious this place is poorly managed and understaffed.

The bar was loaded with dirty dishes. On the counter is for a customer sit. Diapers and trash around the pool area, irrigation leaks all over the property. Staff on their phones, ignoring all of the above

The rooms were not clean. The refrigerator and coffee makers still had usage from the guest prior to us

If you left a surf, this spot is perfect. Right on a break
The beds are extremely comfortable

BEWARE!! BED BUGS!!!

This hotel is absolutely disgusting. Not only were we the only guests staying there (which is extremely creepy) we had a room with an ocean view with wasp nests ALL over the patio. The screen doors were ripped. We had a room where the toilet didn't flush so they moved us to a room where the shower didn't drain. All of that other stuff aside, we got eaten alive by bed bugs. We were so disgusted we left first thing in the morning. We were supposed to stay 4 nights but only stayed 1. The hotel is now refusing to give us a refund for the nights we didn't stay even taking into account their bed bug infestation! Do not stay at this hotel - if I could give it negative stars, I would. Stay at Alma down the road or get an airbnb - that is much safer.

The issues with this property range from the serious to the comical. The most serious being their lack of security and support in an emergency.
No guard at hotel gate on numerous occasions. There is no 24/hr security. Someone banged on our glass door at 2am with a flashlight and when we called the front desk for help, no one picked up. The next morning staff confirmed that “no, there is no one here at night”.
There is no bottled water available.
There are no tissues.
The room did not come with a phone.
The toilet paper is one ply.
There are no wash cloths.
There are is no glassware in the room.
There is no shampoo. Multiple requests for shampoo ended with nothing. We bought our own shampoo in town.
The lights in the hallway of the 200 building were not on at night and staff did not know how to turn them on.
There was a gigantic hornets nest at the entrance to our building.
There was an ant infestation in our bathroom.
The common hall is very dark, but more than half of the lightbulbs are out and not replaced.
Shower head has not been cleaned so does not spray more than 50% of capacity.
Pool bar unmanned and unstocked, not functional.
The website claims this is a world class hotel, but that is categorically untrue. This is a motel that dares charge you $250+ a night to provide none of the value.
They flat out lie about their amenities and services.
Do not give them a penny of your money until they stop misleading you.

Mexican Flag? in this case a red flag

My wife and finished some business in San Jose early and decided on a few nights on the beach. We had stayed at the hotel a few years back and were very happy.
First thing: we noticed was the Mexican flag flying out front, no big deal, just different (are we still in Costa Rica).
Second; We couldn't get in the gate. I finally went in the guard shack and found the 'green button'.
Third; We ordered 2 Imperials beers to take to the beach while our beer was cooling down in the refrigerator. The wanted $16 for them. We gave them back.
Fourth: Only one pack of marmalade in the hotel for breakfast
Fifth: Internet was very bad
Sixth: Bacon? Not quite, some kind of processed stuff formed in the shape of bacon
Seventh: Needed to open a personal bottle of wine, they aske for $10.00. I used my wife's toothbrush, thanks honey!
Eighth: After a long day of drinking wine we wanted some bottled water, nope, all out.
Ninth: After several failed attempts to get a good breakfast (how many ways can you screw up eggs, well, they found them all) my wife decided on pancakes, no bad at all but it took 10 minutes to find the syrup.
We are agreeable travelers and easy to get along with, in fact the Ticos working at the place were great. It is the owners fault that the hotel is stocked with inferior food product, the staff is poorly trained and understaffed.
One could speculate why the owner insiste on this property loosing money....

HIGHLIGHTS: The staff. They do their best to help. The whole hotel was renewed and its in excellent conditions. Clean and really nice. I would stay there again. LOWLIGHTS: The restaurant. First of all the prices are way too high for the quantity and quality. For lunch or dinner worth to drive to Jaco and get a lot of places to get good and cheap food. On top of the prices, we had to wait 40min to get our breakfast due to some problems im the kitchen.

Probably wouldn't stay here again

The best part of this place was that the beach was a 2 minute walk in the backyard. Being able to watch the sunrise and sunset from your little porch is great! This place was pretty deserted and it was a small issue when the gate was locked and there was no attendant in the booth to let us in. We only spent one night here, so it wasn't that big of a deal, but it was inconveniencing. Additionally, we only saw one other group of people that was staying here, and it was very quiet.

Not What We Expected

he hotel was not what we expected, we arrived in the evening around 7pm and found a locked gate with no guard in sight, no lights on in any of hotel buildings, and not a person in sight. We thought it was the wrong address and left, eventually returning when it appeared to be the right address. We sat outside the gate for sometime while deciding what to do when a staff member appeared out of the dark and checked us in.

There only appeared to be another guest or 2 staying at the resort, it seemed very desolate.

The entrance and exit gate to the hotel is always closed, even during the day however most of the time there is no one to open it . Eventually I figured out how to get into the guardhouse and operate the gate controls myself so we could leave and enter as needed.

The room was in good condition but was much smaller than the photos appeared. Based on the high cost of $275/night, this hotel was not a good value for the money and experience.

The property was beautiful however undergoing a remodel during ourstay. We were the only people visiting not part of a group for business. No one but us was using the pool or other amenities and the pool bar was never open it felt quite awkward to be there on vacation playing.

We all loved Sunset del Mar!
It has been beautifully renovated and the rooms were top notch.
All staff was friendly and very hard working.
Food was fresh and healthy, with excellent seafood choices.
The beach is perfect for playing in the waves, good for all ages.
Staff assisted us to make reservations to take advantage of the fun activities in the area.
We highly recommend it and would love to go back!

If you are looking for a quiet place with no mass tourism with nice beaches and true tropical feeling, this is it! Relaxing at a nice small pool under palm trees, listening to the nearby Pacific Ocean, drinking perfectly made cocktails and enjoying one of the most stunning sunsets we ever have seen.
