The hotel is located in a colonial casona that dates back to the 17th century and which is part of a set of four houses comprising walls and gates of equal height that apparently were the property of the Count of Pestagua. The hotel is situated on Calle Santo Domingo and is right in the heart of Cartagena's historical centre.

This boutique hotel is known for the unrivalled standards of its 17th century colonial architecture. The colonial architecture of the Spanish houses from this epoch has been preserved until today.

The hotel offers guests a garden in which they can relax in true holiday fashion. Visitors are welcomed in the lobby with its 24-hour reception and 24-hour check-out service.

We truly loved our stay here. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and always happy to help. Our room was very clean, and the bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and a great start to the day. The pool area was peaceful and relaxing, and dinner in the evenings had such a great vibe — especially with the live band. Lovely hotel, very conveniently located and with a friendly staff. Sadly, there is no restaurant on site that serves food other than a basic breakfast option, which was barely OK.

Our room door did not close properly, and while we reported it, it was never fixed. Additionally, the housekeeping staff forgot to restock the room water bottles and refill shower supplies and toiletries, so we had to be requesting this with the front desk.

Overall, our stay was quite nice, but these little mishaps prevented it from being truly unforgettable.

Lastly, if you need an accessible guest room, consider somewhere else, because all rooms at El Marques require you to climb steps and carry your baggage through the staircase (no elevator on site).

The room was not adequated. My husband and and I are mature adults and the room had 3 levels, with many (I think 32) spiral stairs. The bed is in the highest level and the bathroom in the second (with an aditional stairs). We asked for a changed but at night the hotel is attended by a young man without any authority and the managers are absent.

I liked the fact that it was located right in the heart of everything. I walked out the front door and the shops and restaurants were right there. The only thing I did not like was once you set foot off the property that you were sometimes accosted by persons selling stuff but I know that is not and issue from the hotel.

Stayed at El Marquez for a week with my wife. We were very happy with the service that was provided. Junior who worked the front of the house was fantastic, always smiling and took care of any detail that needed attending to. Armando was also an exceptional employee always ready to assist when needed. The rooms were always cleaned promptly and the pool area always kept neat. The food in the restaurant was also very good. Rooms were very quiet.

The hotel is architecturally gorgeous - each room has its own unique look and feel - and there are several mini living rooms for friends and families to gather. It’s also surrounded by plenty of dining options and is very, very safe. The best aspect, however, is the staff who were friendly and helpful. I will definitely return to this hotel.

I had a wonderful stay at this charming boutique hotel. The refined colonial decor adds a unique and elegant touch, perfectly blending the old-world charm with modern comforts. The service was excellent, attentive and personalized, making me feel right at home. Breakfast was a delight, offering a variety of delicious options to start the day. I particularly enjoyed the wine cellar, which had a fantastic selection. The outdoor pool was a great spot to relax and unwind. Overall, a fantastic experience, deserving of 5 stars! Hotel had a shower that didn’t drain. They fixed it and then the problem continued. We had to fix it. I spoke with hotel manager and requested a discount and was denied immediately. He offered another room. We moved rooms and the roof was leaking water onto the bed. They did absolutely nothing. Don’t recommend and will never stay again!

I loved the attentive service the staff offers. Because there are only 9 rooms in the hotel, you are waited on hand and foot. Everyone was very helpful. Our housekeeper Claudia was excellent. She turned our beds down nightly and left us notes and chocolates on our pillows. We were in the pool and forgot to bring towels, the housekeeper immediatly brought us some before we even had a chance to ask. The waiters at the restaurant offered us poolside service with drinks and snacks. It was an overall positive experience.

Wonderful Hotel in the Old City

We absolutely loved this hotel in a stunning historical building right in the middle of the old city. We loved sitting on the veranda at night and watching the cacophony of people below. The staff was amazing—they helped us plan several day trips and accommodated our 4 year-old’s special requests for food and drinks. We had room 308 (with two floors), which I have seen some other commenters complain about, but it worked perfectly for us. We liked having a separate living area and bedroom, but if you are unstable on stairs or are worried about a child falling down them, then you might want to book a different room. The restaurant, located in the beautiful central courtyard, had delicious food. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

As others have said, the architecture and history of this building is breathtaking. The young lady at the reception was speaking English fairly well but none of the other staff. No hot water but - more importantly- air condition is extremely efficient. Fairly loud music. Breakfast offers American and Columbian style but Columbian style was not available on 2 of our 7 days.

Dont stay here! I lost in my room a 14k gold ring and no one did nothing about it they just make me look like i was making a story up! The house keeper went to room and ask me and she make a “report” and never again i saw her i ask in the reception and nothing!! lost a 500 dollars ring! And no one knows about it! Its not save to leave your jewelry or nothing valuable! And the hotel dose not look like in the pictures! And the pool dose not have filter!

The property location is centralized a lot of options to eat and it’s walkable and safe.
The room was just Ok for us it’s very dark it needs more lightning and I understand they want to keep the original architecture but it needs a few updates.
The restroom was very dark. The pressure of the shower was very low.
The staff are very nice and extremely helpful.
We only had breakfast there their coconut lemonade and iced coffee is the best.
I would definitely come back to Cartagena but perhaps try a different hotel.

Service was good ; the kitchen need more employees to get the breakfast on time ; second day we wait 45 min for omelette and we have to cancel becase we had an appointment. Also the lockbox of the room need upgrade. But overall for the price was a good choice.

This is a great little hotel in the midst of the walled city. The property has a restaurant at it's core and lovely common spaces for all guests to enjoy. This was our final stop of visiting numerous countries and using many hotels along the way, and we enjoyed it the most. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone going to Cartagena's walled city.

The location is great - in the heart of Old Town of Cartagena with easy access to most attractions. It was clean and I, as a single woman traveler, felt very safe.
Kevin, the manager during my third day there, was most competent!
Suggestions for improvement: Jessica, the other manager, was standoffish when I entered the property. She had no clue about Expedia VIP status and I did not even get a complimentary bottle of water! \"Included\" breakfast just included coffee, eggs of choice and one tiny arepa! No bread or water! Property had construction going on but it wasn't noisy. Jessica was insightful and kind on my second day and offered me a large sun-blocking umbrella when she heard I was going to Castillo de San Felipe,which was super helpful. However, when I was leaving the hotel my third day, she offered to call a taxi for the airport and asked me to pay COP 50,000. On arriving at the airport, the cab driver said the fare was COP 26.500 and the amount of the tip (propina) is usually 10 percent. Weird, on Jessica's part.

The hotel was located in a nice historic area of the walled city in Cartagena, close to the Cathedral and many shops/restaurants. The building itself was full of history with a beautiful central courtyard. The staff was super friendly and attentive. However, the place was quite run down. The water was never hot enough to take a nice shower, there was no iron or ironing table nor a blower in the room (we were there for a wedding!), our room was quite small and dark. On the upside, the ac worked well and the room was always cool.
To complicate matters, our door lock broke down one night, and we were forced to sleep in another room without any of our clothes or personal items, until a locksmith could come to fix the problem in the morning. This is an old hotel that needs modernizing. Currently, I cannot recommend it.

Perfect location, mediocre service, outdated hotel

The hotel is very pretty and the location is perfect; however, it needs to be remodel ASAP. We stayed 5 nights and on our last night the AC broke at 1:00 am. The only solution they had for us was to switch us to another room that was not clean, had a hole in the wall and wasn’t ready for someone to sleep in. We decided to stay in our room even when it was 90 degrees. The service was very slow and whenever we asked for something we had to wait more than 20 minutes to get. Unfortunately, we would not stay in this hotel in future trips to Cartagena. There are other hotels way better for the same price. Look somewhere else.

Amazing Hotel ! From the welcome cocktail the friendliness and hospitality from the hotel staff was amazing ! The rooms super clean and wonderfully chilly in contrast to the heat and humidity . The beds super comfortable and tons of pillows . The hotels colonial rustic chic look was very inviting to relaxing and enjoying the surroundings . The restaurant very gourmet and appealing menu ! The pool was very relaxing and welcoming . Can’t say enough about our stay absolutely amazing ! There is live music every night in the restaurant and it is an open center court with oye hotel rooms facing the center court the noise level did not keep us from sleeping comfortably ! Thanks again we will definitely be back and tell our friends . It’s also centrally located in historic district with amazing restaurants and boutiques right in the same street both next door Amadeus and across the street Cuzco restaurants . Recommend you take the hop on hop off bus the first day to get to know the city and also a good history lesson .

Staying in this beautiful historic house made our time in Cartagena extremely enjoyable. From the minute we arrived the staff was friendly, accommodating and charming. Our suite was always kept refreshingly cool, and the large king bed was so very comfortable. There was live music in the courtyard at night which we loved. Once in our room, and we were in our room we could not hear a thing. This boutique hotel is located in the center of it all. I would highly recommend staying here.

An oasis in the historic center of Cartagena

This wonderfully located hotel had everything you could possibly want in historic Cartagena. The courtyard is truly an oasis, and the guest rooms elegantly overlook this space from the original home's peripheral balcony. the hotel is literally a block from plaza Bolivar and right where you want to be while visiting the city. It's a fairly quiet block, as there are others in the City where you would probably not want to be, so this is the right place and I would recommend!

An authentic, comfortable, indulgent way to experience Cartagena. The staff took excellent care of my family (including an energetic toddler), kept us fed (cosuelo de mariscos is a must order), and well supplied with Cuba libres. The room was spacious with a heroic air conditioner that cooled us after midday walks along the city walls, the beds were comfortable, and the water in the big shower was as hot or cold as you could need. Beautiful boutique hotel in Cartagena

Hotel El Marques was a great stay. Super relaxing, great service and beautiful venue! The only thing that did not work for me, was that the room was a bit dark, which made it difficult for me to get ready/do my make up, etc.
The bed was super comfortable, the AC in the room was really cold, which was a great contrast to the city's weather. There's also live music nightly.

Beautiful place to stay. No complaints in regards to the room or the service we received. They have a kitchen but I got sick on my trip so I ate very little. They had a band playing so it was a good night to chill.

We will be returning for our next visit!

The location is great. It is near shops, food, and extremely walkable to the beach and other sightseeing stops. The service was great. Very attentive and responsive when we needed help. They offered to help us book tours and gave us great recommendations of things to do while in Colombia. Our room was decent size but the best part was it the AC was great and it was never hot in our room. We didn't get a window but it didn't bother us much considering the sun would beam in and warm our room otherwise. We stayed at another nearby boutique hotel earlier and we were more expressed with El Marques - they have reliable hot water (LOL).

The Hotel was gorgeous. The staff was amazing Some staff spoke English, that really helped our stay as we do not speak much Spanish. Anderson and Amelio are fantastic and a huge help. They went above and beyond to help us with Restaurants, Shopping and getting taxis. The food at the hotel was delicious. Highly recommend and we will certainly visit again.
