Wonderful experience.

I’m not usually compelled to leave reviews for goods and services I use but this place was so cool. It’s in the center of this amazing little midlevel town and a renovated 18th century manor but with all the comforts of a new hotel. They did a great job preserving the history while modernizing. Room and furniture was emasculate and the air conditioning was superb. The staff were very attentive, professional, and helpful. Breakfast and dining area were great! Highly recommend this place. A+

We stayed at Le Grand Monarque, Azay-le-Rideau for 3 nights. Everything was great: central location, large room, very quiet and they have a parking location near by.
All staff at the reception was wonderful but I would like to give our special thanks to Isabelle. She was above and beyond making recommendations, booking restaurants, suggesting stores and point if interests. Thank you, Isabelle for your fantastic job!

Just brilliant. Le Grand Monarque was recommended by a friend in the UK who stays there regularly. He really did us a favour as it is a fabulous and very interesting hotel with exceptional staff (especially Natalie on Reception). The parking is great value at €7 per night and the breakfast was delicious and nicely varied. Located in the centre of the small town of Azay-le-Rideu this hotel is an absolute gem.

High marks.

A lovely stay, and the staff could not possibly be nicer or more helpful. This is a historic property that forms its own compound in the heart of the pleasant village of Azay-le-Rideau. The hotel is a short walk from one of the most splendid of the Loire chateaux, and is aso centrally located for daytrips throughout the region. Our room was large and comfortable, if a bit sparsely furnished. The bathroom was quite new, modern, and well-fitted out. We'd happily have stayed longer.

This is a lovely old Relais de Poste, converted into a luxurious property. Everything was great. Nice sized rooms, lobby, bar, and breakfast. A fantastic location a few minutes walk from great restaurants and the Cheap Away le Rideau. An EXCELLENT value.

Great Hotel, Wonderful A/C

We used this hotel as our base during our visit to the chateaux of the Loire Valley. It was perfect for this. We had a triple room, and it was amazing, very spacious and comfortable. The pictures online made the room look big, and I think it was even bigger in real life. We were here during the July 2019 heat wave (temperatures between 100F and 109F) and the room was always comfortable. The Air Conditioning worked really well. The hotel has elevators, not always available in Europe. The front desk staff were super nice. We were able to find free street parking every day we were there, but the hotel parking is also very reasonably priced. The hotel is a very short walk to Chateau de Azay-le-Rideau, and is in a quiet area of town. The Wi-Fi worked well. When I booked this hotel, I couldn't believe how good the reviews were, but this place definitely deserves high praise.

Pleasant stay in the Loire valley

Hotel is located in the center of a small French town in the Loire valley. Gated parking was provided and the hotel has a fine restaurant where we had both dinner and breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful; there are sights to see in this small town in addition to its proximity to Chenonceau chateau.

Another overnight stay

This was our third overnight stop at Monarque and we have always enjoyed our stay. The rooms are of an old style but beautifully maintained. Clean and tidy. The staff are terrific and always helpful. The secure parking nearby is a further bonus. Centrally situated this makes and exceptional stop off point when traleeing further afield.A bit pricy but worth it.

I just loved this place!

This was just a great experience! I have never met such friendly, gracious helpful staff, especially the front desk. Most of them spoke English really well. The breakfast was excellent with lots of choices of breads and pastries as well as eggs, cold meats and cheeses. They could have had a little more fruit but was amazing otherwise. The have dinner served in their lovely courtyard. It was a small menu but delicious and expertly prepared. There are several other restaurants and bars nearby so you have choices. The room was clean, the bed was comfy, the bathroom was modern and the shower was excellent. The AC had a little trouble keeping up with the extremely hot weather but it was still a lot better than not having it. Good driving distance to a lot of the chateaux and wineries. There is 1 lovely chateau within a 5 minute walk. I heartily recommend this hotel!

True gem in Azay-le-Rideau!

Beautiful, well maintained hotel with wonderfully appointed spacious rooms and a great location. Beds very comfortable.Within very close walking distance to the Chateau d'Azay-le-Rideau, shopping, and restaurants. I cannot say enough about the owner, Eric and receptionist Isabelle. They define exceptional customer service. My husband became very ill and their concern and action at this time was beyond expectations. This IS the place to stay in Azay.

We have now stayed at this hotel on 3 occasions on our way further south. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly and make all of us very welcome. Nice large rooms and a beautiful old building in the centre of town. Locked parking is also a bonus. First class hotel if a bit pricey.

Charming traditional hotel next door to castle.

This was a charming hotel in an old building. The proprietor was exceedingly helpful and kind even coming outside on our arrival to help us find a car park. He gave us a kettle so I could make an early morning cup of tea. Breakfast great value with beautiful locally made jams. Highly recommended.

Great hotel in the heart of the chateau region

We stayed for 5 delightful nights at the hotel, located in a (modernized) 16th century coach inn. Staff (often the owners) were excellent -- friendly, knowledgeable, helpful. From information about visiting the chateau (Azay le Rideau) 5 minutes away by foot -- and its gardens (for free) after closing to suggestions on places to visit and to have lunch, as well as recommending routes for walks near the hotel they helped make our stay very enjoyable. The rooms were a nice mixture of old (architecture) and modern (bathrooms, air conditioning, etc.) Right across the street is a municipal parking lot (free), and we usually found a parking place on the first try; at the worst, we had to circle three times. All in all, a great base for visiting the area.

Great historic hotel with welcoming staff

This is a wonderful place to stay to experience the real feel of the Loire Valley. It is in an small French village which has easy but discrete access to the highway. There are so many good parts.

The innkeepers are welcoming, flexible and fluent in English. We arrived at the train station (Saint-Pierre-de-Corps) after the car rental agency closed so we had to plan to return to station the next day for the car. They helped get us a bus right outside the hotel and called the car agency for us. They recommended a new place for dinner each night. We were with kids so we wanted basic places but each was outstanding food. We cannot say enough good about the staff.

The hotel itself is a historic inn (from the 1700s) but the room and bath are updated. They feel historic without feeling dated-great bathrooms with plenty of hot water. Beds are comfortable. Rooms vary in size given the historical nature but overall good size by European standards. Wonderful character to the place- not the cookie cutter Marriott experience.

Hotel offers covered parking across the street.

The town is great as well. Easy walking to all restaurants. Quiet at night but bustling during the day. Exactly what we imagined a French village to be. A great base from which to visit chateaus and wineries.

We stayed one night on a bicycle tour of the Loire, visiting the Chateau. The hotel is beautiful, very nice grounds, and has covered, locked storage for bicycles. The breakfast was quite excellent, with a good selection. The staff were very nice and helpful.

Spent one week at the hotel which is in centre town, steps away from a pedestrian street, four minutes from the chateau and close to a good number of restaurants and pubs. The hotel has a dining room and the offerings, though limited in number, are excellent. The buffet breakfast is also very good and replenished regularly.
Staff is wonderful and will bend over backwards to be of assistance.
Our bedroom opened onto the courtyard and was very quiet, large (at least for France) and had spacious facilities.
Situated in the midst of a good number of Loire chateaux, Le Grand Monarque allows for good road access to them.
Highly recommended hotel.

A Comfortable 18th Century Inn in Azay le Rideau

My family took two rooms for one night and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the reception and rooms. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and gave tourism and dining recommendations. Rooms were large and comfortable. The hotel is located on the crossroads of a country village that is a tourist attraction, yet is quiet, especially at night. There is a free municipal parking lot close by, and at least one very good restaurant (La Grotte - reservations recommended). We skipped the hotel breakfast and went to a nearby café for a lower cost.

We spent 6 nights in this hotel. The staff were very obliging and the hotel is wonderful, and perfectly situated for exploring the Loire. It's a minutes walk to many restaurants and bars, and 2 minutes to the chateau and river amenities. Disputes it's central location, it's very peaceful and the courtyard is lovely. The staff could not have been more friendly or obliging, and we heartily recommend a stay here. We will be returning.

A delightful stop over

Stayed here for one night on our way South. Really lovely hotel in a small pretty town, spotlessly clean, staff/owners fluent in English, very friendly and helpful giving us a map of the town and explaining directions etc. Large secure car park for hotel guests only, small fee but worth it. We stayed in the Quadruple room which turned out to be two comfortable very large bedrooms with a connecting door and one bathroom. Lots of space, no tea/coffee making facilities although you can ask for a kettle at Reception. Breakfast expensive for what you get. Wish we had stayed here on our back North!

Town is very small with not much to do. You have to drive to neighboring town for most activities. Outside of hotel looks awful. Rooms much nicer inside than exterior of hotel. Manager at desk was very friendly and helpful. He let us cancel our reservations late. All in all a nice hotel, just in a poor location.

The staff was really polite & helpful. The owner, who was behind the front desk, helped us carry our luggage upstairs. He even did some internet searching to answer a French history question we had asked when he didn't know the answer off hand. The building is old, so there was no elevator & the air conditioning isn't what it is in the U.S. But it was an interesting, welcoming, comfortable place to stay in walking distance to everything. Would definately stay there again.

From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed and our bags were swiftly taken to our room, while the manager explained about the hotel and showed us to our room. The botel is rich in history and our room was located in the adjacent building which was very nicely decorated and quiet. We stayed two nights and had breakfast and dinner there. The quality of the food was excellent and the service professional.

There was a problem with wifi at checkout and the manager kindly deducted a bottle of wine from our bill for the inconvenience. He was the best service minded manager we encountered on our two week tour through France and Germany.

A wonderful hotel in a quiet little village

My favorite part of our trip to France was this quiet little town and this gorgeous 18th century hotel. The owner and staff were perfection at taking care of our entire groups needs including offering wine glasses for our picnic in the courtyard one evening. There's even a farmers market in the parking lot behind the hotel twice a week! The breakfast was delicious! I would certainly come back again.

This hotel was an excellent base for our visit to the Loire Valley. The Manager and staff are friendly and very helpful and our room was spacious and well equipped. The hotel exterior looks a little old and worn but the interior is updated and well kept. The hotel is in the middle of town and there is free parking adjacent to the hotel in the main square. It is only a few minutes walk to the Chateau and there are plenty of cafes and small restaurants nearby. We enjoyed our stay.

Class and charm combined!

My husband and I had a great stay at Le Grand Monarque in Azay-le-Rideau. The hotel had access to both free and paid parking. We were on the 3rd floor and there was no elevator, but the staff immediately toted our bags up for us and wouldn't accept a tip. The breakfast was very good, but there were also shops close by if you want to opt for something less expensive. Our room was absolutely charming, with massive ceiling beams exposed. The area was quiet, and the bed comfortable. There were lots of restaurants close by, with shops and the Chateau within easy walking distance. This location made a great base for visiting so many sights in the Loire Valley. We would love to stay there again.

what is there not to like about this beautiful Hotel and Location. was traveling down to work in Tours and picked this hotel at random as it was close to my client. as I drove into the area it was a sunny hot day and the scenery and small town were breath taking.the hotel receptionist was fluent in English and even offered a map of the local area. dinner was first class and served al-fresco. my only beef was that I was on my own and could not share this great hotel with my partner.

Hotel a few minutes walk to a castle (chateau)

Hotel staff was extremely nice and helpfull. Chateau very close to hotel. Helpfull hint: many of the restaurants near hotel do not serve dinner until 7 or later. Would stay again and recommend to a friend.

We enjoyed very much our stay at The Grand Monarque. It started well with a warm welcome from the staff. The service was excellent, the hotel was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Unfortunately, the room did not have a refrigerator.

Great location, great staff...Highly Recommended

The quaint 18th century post house was the perfect place to stay for our two night adventure to see the Chateaus of France. This little town is small but has true charm and character. We arrived after dark and the hotel staff was warm and welcoming, we ate dinner in the restaurant which was very good. The next day the staff was great at helping us with directions and arranging taxi's to see a few Chateau's farther away. The rooms are quite large and very comfortable and quiet. Highly recommend this hotel

Perfect place to stop over ...

This was a lovely stop over after a five hour drive through France. The hotel (which has been stayed in by the Queen mother!) was delightful. Overall we had a lovely short stay in Azay Le Rideau and would definitely return to this hotel.

Perfect location and friendly service

Lovely hotel (with air conditioning) right off the main square. Staff was great particularly Eric the owner. He was very, very helpful. He told us the history of the hotel, recommended a great restaurant, and even helped us with our French. I very highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed for one night on our way to the south of France, the staff spoke good English and were very polite and informative. The room was clean and the location is excellent.

An excellent place to stay

Our stay was most enjoyable. The hotel is conveniently located in the centre of a small town. Breakfast was expensive so we went to a local cafe and there are some interesting resturants which were less formal than the hotel dinning room. All in all an excellent place to stay to explore the chateaus and local area of the Loire valley

Great hotel, and lovely village

We really liked this hotel. Room was clean and modern (in an oldish historic building). Staff were great. They spoke good English, even though we could have managed in French, as it was more helpful. We would recommend this hotel, and would stay there again.

It was magnificent. Have stayed here many times and had many different rooms over the last 47 years. Never disappointed. Staff are courteous and helpful. Cannot recommend it enough.

Amazing hotel in a superb location

Charming hotel with some of its past features retained and highlighted to give some authenticity to the old feel of the hotel. Its been brought up to 21s Century standards whilst still retaining some of its old features.

Extremely helpful staff, very knowledgable about the area and willing to help with any queries that may arrise.

We stayed here for a week with our 7month old daughter and the staff were brilliant.

Grand Monarque, Azay-le-Rideau

Azay-le-Rideau is well situated for chateau hopping in the Loire Valley - its own chateau is 2 minutes walk from the hotel, and it's a 20 minute drive to Villandry, 30 mins to Chenonceau. The furthest you'll need to go is Chambord, a leisurely and scenic 90 mins drive away. If you need the 'big city', Tours is 20 minutes.

Le Grand Monarque is privatety owned and run, so service is excellent and very personal. The hotel is an old building but beautifully maintained, and the rooms are all different (they have names, not numbers). We stayed in a 'comfort' room - spacious, air conditioned and nicely furnished.

Highly recommended.
