such a pleasant stay! yes, its older and the rooms are small, and since you read the \"about\" section, you know that before you book. blocks away from hampstead heath for a vigerous hike or run. around a few corners from the holly bush, whose sunday roasts are amazing. the haddock and scallop pie at the flask is not to be missed. and the brick oven pizzaria on heath street is devine, with a carafe of wine at £15! it must be said, lorenzo is the ultimate host and will be happy to hear all about your adventures and whatever else youve done during your stay! the vibe is home away from home, and many of the guests were clearly returning, some from months before or years before and lorenzo remembers them all! tip from the lovely deka, who hosts your breakfasts and doubles as the housekeeper... when arriving with luggage, take the bus up the hill. save youself the hastle of the stone sidewalks! you can catch it right outside the hampstead stop on the northern line and will drop you the block past the hotel. looking forward to the next time i can stay with the la gaffe family!!!

It is a unique facility located in the beautiful Hampstead hills.There are beautiful walks in the hills and the nearby Hampstead Heath. A short walk to the Hampstead tube station.

Awful place, I would not recommend this to anyone. Booked a double room, room was very small, dated, hot and stuffy. There was a window which opened into a hotel landing area with a glass room.
Requested a change of room but was advised there were no rooms available therefore checked out immediately and found another hotel.
I would not recommend this place.

First off, Lorenzo was the quintessential host - knowledgeable, friendly, and didn't hesitate to help us with anything we needed. He truly went above and beyond. As first time travelers to GB, that was probably one of the most important things we could have hoped for.

The room was small but all we needed. The bed was VERY comfortable and it was pretty quiet at night. The shower and bath were clean and a welcome relief after a long day site seeing.

They offered a light breakfast which had a nice mix of offerings, but there were other places nearby if you preferred. Hampstead has a variety of store fronts so anything you want is within a 15 minute walk. It's a bit hilly, but the area is great!

I want to thank Lorenzo and his staff for all that they did! They were first rate hosts!

We had a room that was so tiny we could hardly open our cases or move around comfortably. The bathroom in our double room was so tiny you had to step outside to dry off! Coming in our room was a challenge as there was barely room to squeeze in. Extremely noisy at night even with ear plugs which were provided! The whole facility needs a huge makeover to bring it up to decent standards. The stairs up to the rooms are extremely dangerous and narrow. The staff however are very friendly and helpful.

I don’t understand why there are so many good reviews, it’s very misleading. Location was good and shower pressure strong, but that’s about it. Bed was terribly uncomfortable. Pillows were old and gross and had other guests hair on them. Walls are so thin I could hear the man in the room next door snoring, coughing, flushing the toilet, etc.

We would highly recommend this family owned hotel. Given the difficulties these days with getting staff etc. they did their utmost to provide us with individual things that we needed. A really friendly and efficiently run place in a beautiful area of London.

I do not recommend this place more like a hostel or bedsit than a hotel. Normally stay at premiere inn and thought we would try somewhere different. The room had dirty walls and then bed was squeaky. It reminded me of my student accommodation 25 years ago. No sound proofing I could hear neighbours arguing until 1 am. Staff were polite however fire alarm went off multiple times in the night. When I tried to exit the door was internally locked and no one greeted us outside. Worse than this was that a team member from the annex next door was clearly visible inside the property on the phone and distracted while his guests stood for 20 minutes on the pavement outside…in the end I returned back into the building and retrieved the contact telephone number for emergency contacts…as we did not know how long we may be stood outside for…I rang the number and the same man I could see wandering around inside answered and eventually came out…I was very annoyed that he did not approach us in all the time we stood there and left us to fend for ourselves until shamed into helping us. A truly awful experience and I would never stay there again the breakfast offer was boiled eggs bread rolls and cereal and the restaurant error had a strange odour.

Overall good value for money. A lot of street noise - unavoidable because of location - quite a lot of room noises: thin walls but, luckily, clientele on the quiet, respectful side. Twin room size adequate for one (myself) but would have been beyond cozy for two. Big bonus is location in Hammersmith: interesting neighborhood restaurants & bars, very close to Heath and close to Tube for exploration of London.

I had a very good stay here. The location is fantastic, only 5 minutes from the Northern Line and 15 minutes from the centre of London, but it feels like another world. Hampstead is a beautiful part of London to stay in, with lots of cafes and small shops, and the Heath is right on your doorstep. It is also not far (15 minute walk) to the overground to head west to Kew or east to Stratford. The staff were very friendly. It is a continental breakfast, but that was perfect for me and great coffee (the most important thing!) My room was a good size--certainly for what you would expect in London--the bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage and the bathroom was clean. The shower was rather difficult to set and very hot. My main reservation about my stay was that my room was at the front, and when it was warm if I opened the window there was a lot of traffic noise. The ceiling fan kept the air circulating but it was a little uncomfortable--but you wouldn't expect air-conditioning in a small hotel in the UK and it was only a problem on a rare hot day. The stairs were also a little steep with luggage but the staff helped me up on arrival. Despite that, I would have no hesitation at all in returning, and have already recommended the hotel to some colleagues at work. If you like a generic hotel that could be in London, Lisbon, or Las Vegas, you probably won't like La Gaffe; but if you like a hotel with character and charm and with friendly staff, this is the place for you.

This was one of the best places we’ve ever stayed at! All the hosts were so kind and made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived. The interior is beautiful, especially in the restaurant area. Unfortunately, they didn’t have staff for the restaurant during our stay, but there are so many great restaurants right nearby, and the complementary breakfast was fantastic. We’ll definitely be back again and would recommend!

We really enjoyed our stay at La Gaffe. The hosts and staff were brilliant, friendly and helpfull. The breakfast was really nice and there was plenty of choice. The rooms were cleaned daily. The hotel is in a great location for Hampstead and a short walk to the tube and cafe's, shops pubs and restaurants. If we had any complaints we could say the room was warm and as we fronted onto a busy road it wasnt practical to sleep with the window open due to traffic noise. Im sensitive to noise, my wife didnt mind so its down to individual opinions. There is a ceiling fan which helps. If you are looking to stay here there are other rooms away from the road. But honesty this is a lovely friendly Hotel with good cleanliness good breakfast, great hosts and staff also a small bar. Also we thought it was good value given the location. We would go again. Hampstead is brilliant a great place to relax after any trips into London. A few celebrities wondering around also, so people watching is interesting

Firstly there's nothing terrible about La Gaffe, it's just not quite as good as I expected from some of the other reviews. It's been open since 1962 and to be honest, I can believe that. The whole place has a very 60s/70s feel. Nothing wrong with that and it could be called quaint. You should be aware that the restaurant is no longer open. I don't know if this is a temporary thing or not but whatever, it was closed when I was there which was a shame.
Check-in was neutral. Certainly not what I'd call friendly and welcoming. The room was a decent size. Bed was comfortable and I slept well. The bath and shower room was obviously fairly recently installed but the shower was just about the worst I've ever used: Either scaldingly hot or freezing cold with only a few seconds of usable temperature between the extremes. This alone would put me off staying here again. Yes, there was a big Jacuzzi bath available but that really isn't my thing.
All of the fitted cupboards had a very DIY look about them with MANY coats of gloss paint over the MDF. Again, nothing wrong with that except it's unusual and not what I expected for £156 a night.
Breakfast was decent and as mentioned elsewhere, the coffee is excellent. It would have been nice had there been crusty bread rather than the sliced offerings, home-made rather than plastic containers of jam and a better selection of cereals but I'm being churlish.
In all it was OK but I wouldn't rush back.

Good find in Hampsted

Staff were welcoming and friendly and the rate was very reasonable for this part of London. Tube station nearby for easy access andHampstead village just a short walk. Breakfast was fine, lovely coffee and the usual continental fare.
Room was spacious, clean & quiet. The only down side was the bed quite old, squeaky & not very comfortable! The stairs to access our room would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues as quite steep.

This small and quaint hotel in the lovely area of Hampstead is an excellent alternative to the large chain hotels. It is only 5 minutes walk plus 20 minutes underground ride to the center of London (e.g., Leicester Square). The structure is old, but everything is very clean and well-maintained. Its Italian restaurant is excellent (note that well over 50% of restaurants in London are \"Italian\" but very few are authentic), and the staff is extremely cooperative. The only negative is that rooms are rather small.

Unexpected charm

I don’t know the history of this family owned hotel but they have made use of the space available. It is a bit spartan but they have added everything necessary in the room for our convenience. It wasn’t the Hilton nor the Holiday inn but probably the best example of a family owned business that has used the space as well as they could.
I was welcomed by a family member who had me sign the ledger book
(like one would have done 100 years ago). Then I was assisted up the stairs with my luggage. I was instructed as to how to turn the key to enter my room along with other basic instructions. The individual instruction was actually charming in a way that I was not use to nor was I expecting.
I travel all over the world for a living and stay at high end corporate hotels year round. When I booked the hotel online I didn’t scrutinize the photos since I was in a rush and saw the price was very affordable. The restaurant was very good! I had breakfast both mornings and dinner once. All in all I enjoyed my stay and would return here if I needed to be in the area again. The location was good since most shops and pubs were within walking distance. The tube station was just down the street also.
I always test the speed of the internet where ever I go. The download speed at this hotel was a blazing 190 Mbps! I have NEVER recorded a speed this fast anywhere! Not even at my home!! Netflix says 5 Mbps will allow you to stream in High Definition to give you an idea how fast this is.

We loved our stay at La Gaffe. The room was comfortable, warm, clean, and it was easy to come and go as we pleased. The staff were all very helpful and courteous. The location is superb whether your stay is purely to spend time in Hampstead of explore London given the proximity to the tube station. The WiFi was also very fast so always easy to connect. We will stay there again.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. though the hotel is Old building with small rooms. The rooms are not sound proof so you can easily hear the noises. My room was on street side and I could not sleep because of loud noises from the cars even about 2am!
The hotel is located in a OK/fairly nice area but it is far away from many city attractions.

This hotel is an amazing find! It is over a small Italian restaurant. It is utterly charming and the room has character, is spotlessly clean, and has a sparkling bathroom. This must be one of the best hotels in London for the price. Breakfast was also excellent, with proper expresso on offer.

Small, family-run hotel in a lovely part of London

My stay at La Gaffe was a very pleasant experience. The single room was small (no surprise, as they honestly mentioned the size), and a bit spartan, but had a nice, new bathroom, and was sparkling clean. The cold breakfast buffet was simple but adequate, and the restaurant provided excellent Italian dinners. My only caveat would be location...it’s on a main Street in Hampstead, a good three block walk up a hill, so anyone with mobility issues might have a struggle. Also, my room was up a fairly steep stairway, which again might prove to be a challenge. Despite those concerns, I definitely would go back.

Good place to stay for what we needed - walks, family visits, concert.Next to busy main road so windows had to be kept closed. Delightful restaurant - old fashioned atmosphere, good food. Room functional but fine.

Loved this hotel. It's in a quieter part of London (Hampstead is pretty far north), but the tube station was close by. The owner and staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room was quite small (to be expected anywhere in Europe) but had lots of storage. It was clean and convenient if you're traveling solo. Breakfast was decent, but there are so many great bakeries within walking distance if you want something warm or a little more special.

The location was excellent. Close to an underground station in a lovely neighbourhood with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby. The hotel is modest but very clean. The reception, and service were very good as was the breakfast. WiFi worked efficiently. It was perfect for our needs and true value for money.

As advertised, La Gaffe is not a hotel. It is an Italian restaurant with rooms upstairs. That said, it is charming and delightful, in a perfect location in lovely Hampstead, just a 3 or 4 minute walk from the Hampstead underground station. Lorenzo is kind, caring, and friendly. He and his small staff will bend over backwards to accommodate your needs. The rooms are simple, but clean and comfortable. I had told Lorenzo in advance that I was a light sleeper. He reserved Room 10 for me, upstairs and in the rear, which was super quiet, yet had good light. The breakfast is also simple, but fresh and filling, and the coffee is superb. I had a family dinner in the restaurant, which was delicious and authentically Italian. I also ate dinner in the cafe/bar, which offers a different menu on the chalk boards, but was also delicious. It was also lovely to sit in the cafe in the afternoon for coffee and to get some work done. The free WiFi works very well, indeed. All in all, a wonderful stay at La Gaffe! I will be back.
