The Carlton Hotel is our favorite spot to stay in Ilfracombe. The location is good, being on same level as the harbour for easy walking, and with it's own parking area. The rooms are always spotless and extremely well maintained and the staff are very frindly and helpful.

What a lovely hotel so attentive and friendly. The breakfast was very enjoyable with great quality food. The hotel and room was modern and spotlessly clean with good facilities. All of the staff were very friendly and informative, it was so nice to stay in a dog friendly hotel that still offered all the comforts of home. Don’t let the colour of outside put you off inside is like a 5 star hotel from the moment you walk through the door every thing has been redecorated to the highest standard and quality we have stayed in a lot of hotels and this is one of the best ever . The owner and all staff were so helpful and obliging and I would definitely stay there again and recommend this hotel to anyone

We stayed for 4 nights between Christmas and Nee Year. All of the staff were lovely and so accommodating. We had a dog with us, who was welcome in all areas of the hotel. We food is delicious lots of choices for breakfast and main meals. Cannot wait to book to stay again.

The room is large and clean with a nice size shower. The bed was very comfortable with lots of pillows and other nice amenities like coffee and television, refrigerator table and chairs, etc. it also had a nice fan. What I didn’t like is a parking was very tight we were fortunate on both of our nights stay to find a spot right in front of the hotel but I suppose if we come a bit later, we would’ve had to struggle to find a place nearby.

My mother and I had a very enjoyable 3 night stay at the Carlton Hotel, all the staff were very hospitable and could not do enough for us throughout our stay. We spoke to other returning guests whilst we were there and can see why they do so as the hotel was all that we required. I can see why it has such good reviews. The food each night in the restaurant was superb and the service too. I would definitely return if I was to visit Ilfracombe or this area again.

The hotel was exactly what I was looking for. Somewhere quiet but not to far from the water.
The food was very good but the service for dinner was very slow and they forgot to ask me if I wanted a dessert. However, TBH they were very full and everyone seemed very young and inexperienced apart from the bar man.
Breakfast had a lot to offer and most likes seemed to be well catered for.
I love dogs but am allergic. I was a little worried before I arrived but there was nothing to worry about at all. If there had ever been a dog in my room then there was no sign at all. The room was excellently cleaned and the bed was enormous. The shower was excellent too with a lot of water pressure and enough hot water.
I will go there again

The hotel is very clean and looked to have been recently renovated. The breakfast staff were friendly and very efficient with a good variety of hot and cold breakfast available.
Unfortunately there are building works across the road which are noisy. I would recommend a room upgrade as our room was very small.

Room was really hot with no a/c but fan provided. Rooms are on the small side

Upon arrival they must have had issues with their system as they had mixed my data up with a previous guest who shared the same name. Had paid via hotels.com months prior to arrival and when checking out was asked to pay again! Staff apologetic.

On arrival family had booked table of 4 for dinner however hotel wasn’t flexible in trying to cater for the other 4 even though hotel restaurant was far from at capacity, gave nice suggestions for other local restaurants to try.

Breakfast was lovely other than serving cold coffee, neighbouring table also had same issue

Mid 3 star hotel, small rooms, no Aircon

The Hotel is on the West side of Ilfracombe about 10 minutes from the town centre. There is parking for about 6 cars in the front but otherwise your parking on the street. Reception areas are fine but not grandios, Reception staff were good and explained the format. The room was decorated ok, but very small and tight for two of us and the dog. We went on the off peak season March and were probably given the mallest room, we noticed at least 15 other rooms that were not let out whcih may have been bigger. The front of the htoel was bit naoisy in the morning with no Aircon, and in summer this would have been intollerable.
The evening meal was very good and breakfast is adequate.
I rate this a middle end 3 star hotel.

The staff were all lovely and very helpful, the hotel was beautifully decorated and very clean. The bed was comfortable. The breakfast was great with lots of choice and we had lovely meals in the restaurant during the 2 evenings of our stay.
However, I booked a Queen room as the photos showed it had a table and chairs in the room which makes it more comfortable for sitting drinking a cuppa and reading etc. when we arrived there was just 1 chair in the room so we asked for another and a small table or to have our room changed. We were given another chair but there really wasn’t room for a table and apparently there wasn’t a room available with these in. We may as well have booked a double room which was cheaper. Also, a mirror is needed in the room that you can us with the hairdryer. There was a large mirror over the bed which is really the wrong place.
We didn’t let these minor things affect our short break away and we enjoyed exploring Ilfracombe but the hotel really needs to consider what they show in their photos for different rooms.

I had such a relaxing, blissful stay at the Ilfracombe Carlton Hotel and will definitely stay there if I visit Ilfracombe again. The staff were eager to help and make my stay enjoyable. The room was well provided with facilities, and was smart, comfortable and clean. The lounge was stylish yet comfortable. The hotel's facilities were excellent - a restaurant serving delicious food, a gym and a great library with lots of books, local OS maps to borrow, and draughts board. The breakfasts were superb with many hot options to choose from as well as a range of cereals, fruit salad, yoghurt and toast. The proprietor is mad about theatrical musicals and there are posters of West End productions all over the walls which adds an element of fun. There's a bus stop just yards from the hotel, and the hotel is next to the entrance to the Tunnels Beaches (one of the main tourist attractions) and a couple of minutes walk from the museum (which is wonderful) and the sea front. All in all, I had a fantastis stay.

Stayed at this hotel this past week and it was brilliant. Mike the owner was always on hand to help with any enquiries.
The staff were polite, professional and friendly.
Breakfast was on point.
The gym was actually decent aswell.
The only thing that wasnt nice was how warm our room was at night. Although this was rectified by keeping the window open.

Overall for a 3 star hotel it was fantastic. Theres free parking out front aswell that made it so convenient.

Couldnt recommend this hotel highly enough.

Access to our room and facilities within were comfortable and good.

We were late arriving at the hotel due to a delay on the ferry from Lundy, we were so impressed to be able to order our dinner on arrival, we were served delicious food with in 20 minutes by delightful young staff.
The hotel is clean and welcoming, breakfast excellent too.

We booked a family room for the weekend. We were greeted by Michael when we checked in, he was so helpful, nothing was too much trouble. He helped with our Mum who is in a wheelchair. Every member of staff were so lovely and friendly. Our room had recently been refurbished and to a very high standard, it included a king size bed and bunk beds which were so comfortable .The breakfast was lovely, self service continental and table service for hot food, a really good variety on the menu. We also ate in the Brasserie in the evening, the food was excellent. We had a very enjoyable weekend and would definitely recommend this hotel.

Only positive things about this hotel

Everything about this hotel was amazing. From the decor to the friendliness of the staff I cannot fault it. The hotel was spotlessly clean and in a great location and had parking which is always a bonus. Michael, the co owner was a lovely character and couldn't do enough for you. We ate in the restaurant the first night and the food was outstanding but reasonably priced. I have nothing negative to say, you will not be disappointed if you chose this hotel!

When I walk into a hotel room and all I can smell is bleach, I know things are gonna be good. True for the whole hotel. The place was spotless! Free parking!! That’s a rarity these days but this hotel greed never kicked in and took advantage of people enjoying themselves. This hotel is literally next to the tunnels beach and for 3 quid, it’s worth it just to see them. The hotel staff were very friendly and indeed very helpful. Even found a place for me to lock my bicycle away of a night for me. Like 5 minute walk from the harbor and the “town”. Sweet little town center and great tea shops around. I’ll certainly stay there again when I’m in the area.

Great hotel but please park considerately

The car park is very limited in space and also relies on considerate parking. The staff were very friendly and helpful, although the welcome 'rules and regulations' seemed a bit severe. The restaurant food was very good. I had a steak (good steak well cooked) and asked for a blue cheese sauce. The restaurant was very quiet so the chef obliged. Many thanks, made the mel.

A good hotel in North Devon

This hotel is well maintained and has comfortable communal areas with modern decoration and lighting. The staircases also have new plain carpets and automatic lighting. There is clear signage throughout.
I stayed in a single room and these are often hard to find. Although small the room was comfortable with a modern en-suite.
All the staff were friendly, polite and helpful. The breakfast menu offered many choices and hot food was cooked to order.
