Room with view was nice. Price booked with Expedia.com is lower than booked direct with hotel. We liked our room and extended another night. Price quoted by hotel was more expensive but staff was nice enough to tell us to book with Expedia.com, then informed staff so we could stay in the same room without moving to other room

A time capsule from the 1960s and 70s and it really shows. While the place is extremely charming, it is a relic from the glorious past that sadly cannot just use the \"stunning view\" or \"instant access\" to the beach as it's trump card and the facilities are poor and no tea or coffee or kettle was available in the room.

I booked this hotel as it had parking. However, there isn't enough parking for all guests. As a result I had to park a long walk uphill and walk back to the hotel.
Check in was awful. We were given a room without an ocean view which we had paid for. After much complaining , we were moved to an ocean room view. Reception staff were very rude.
Hotel is fairly dated and needs a refurbishment.
Positives - great location, pool area is nice, view from balcony, clean rooms. Breakfast is ok.

A lovely traditional building but seems to have downgraded since covid. No glasses in rooms just paper cups. Rooms booked were supposed to be large enough for 3 people but this resulted in a smaller balcony and a poorer view. Staff in restaurant for breakfast were unhelpful except for Otilde who did everything she could to make our stay better. She deserves a lot of credit. No breakfast tea bags and the hot plates were never switched on so food that should have been hot was cold.
Unfortunately poor British tourists in the garden playing football. When asked politely to stop they were very rude. \"We have paid a lot of money to come here\". Well, if you happen to read this, so had everybody else so I suggest you spend some money and learn to read and have some respect for others. It said clearly no ball games in the garden. Go on the beach!
Staff on duty during the day in the bar could do with some lessons in smiling and customer service.
Can't fault cleanliness.

This used to be a lovely friendly hotel but seems to have lost its way.

Great location in a charming neighborhood, close to restaurants and shops. Many tourist attractions were walkable( 25 min. To get to) and the buses and trolly were nearby. My room was very nice and had a view of the city!
The only negatives- breakfast selection was not worth the extra charge. A coffee set up in the lobby would be nice and some bottled wayer for the room. Other than that- loved my stay!

Beautiful spot on the beach, great beach restaurants. Used the sauna but not the indoor pool because we didn’t have swim caps and they were required. Outdoor pool was also too cold to use because we went in November. Property can use some updating but our balcony overlooking the beach was fantastic!

Superb location, beautiful views, helpful staff. Breakfast buffet was good enough especially considering the price of the room. Indoor swimming pool was very good and easy access to the beach made for a lovely stay. Car park was secure and plenty of space. We extended our stay an extra night as enjoyed it so much.

Pros are that the property was easy to access with a convenient car park. It also has nice views and a unique mid century style.
Con is that I booked a double room and was given a twin. For two (seperate) days there was no hot water in the room. The first day without hot water the hotel staff came to the room to check just confirmed no hot water and left without fixing the problem. The second time they didn’t believe us and simply told us to wait longer for the water to heat up.
The room felt dated, it had nowhere to put clothe other than a rail, and the extractor fan didn’t work in the bathroom.
The nail in the coffin is that there’s no iron in the room. Instead you have to pay for a service which charges 14 euros per item. Entirely a hidden fee, especially since you can’t just borrow the iron/steamer and have to pay.
Overall the hotel is cheaper than others in Sesimbra and maybe the quality of service reflects this. But with issues in the booking, a staff that is not helpful, à gym with machines that may break at any time, I would not recommend this hotel.

Hotel is very nice. Had a beautiful, huge balcony looking out to the sea. Location is perfect for avenue with a lot of dining options.

Only negative thing I will say about the hotel is the layout. Very confusing floor plan Weber no elevator takes you from your room to the beach exit. You have to take certain elevators from floor 8 to 5, then find the other wing’s elevator to get to the ground level. Got lost and turned around a few times.

Room are completely outdated and smell. Carpets need to be thrown out. They are very dirty. Hotel should not have bed side mats. Furniture need replacement. Feels like a cheap motel. Hotel lighting needs updating. It’s very dark and gloomy. Feels like bates motel. The electrical plugs are in the wrong spot. I had to go under the table to charge my phone, hair dryer is in random spot and not in front of mirror and can’t be moved. Washrooms sink doesn’t drain. Hotel needs complete overhaul. Do not recommend this hotel to anyone

We had a great time. There is lots to do and see around the area. The staff was wonderful. The beach is just steps away, but sometimes a lot of steps away depending on where you are in the hotel. The Outdoor and indoor pool were well kept.

This is by far my favorite hotel experience ever! The staff was wonderful, room was perfect for us. Being able to walk right down to the beach and then also have the option for a swim in the pool was breathtaking. Also the easy access to town was so nice. Not to mention you get to look at a castle!

Dirty-Old-Bugs-Stay Away

Arrived at 2 PM would not let us check in until 4 PM (hotel empty, off season. Picture on Hotels.com misrepresent what the accommodations are really like. The team at the property were very friendly, accommodating and helpful. We had a lovely garden apartment on the 5th floor. The breakfast was fantastic all one could ask for. Very handy location with fabulous views of the Ocean. The only disappointing factor was the restaurant team, they weren't very friendly and seemed to be wandering aimlessly. The 2 elderly gentlemen (in blue suits) gave the impression that they didn't want to be there. When I questioned undercooked (red, almost blue) veal in my Gordon Bleu one of these gents said; \"Well, that's the way sometimes people like it.\" Really? Thank goodness the duty manager stepped in and did not charge us for my portion of the dinner. Thank you.

We stayed for 10 days and really enjoyed it. Staff were very helpful and the room was clean. Yes the hotel is older so set your expectations accordingly; if you are looking for a modern 5 star resort then you will be disappointed. But if you looking for a decent hotel with some character in a great location this is for you. Good to have a car if you are staying for a while because the town is small. Breakfast was fantastic.

A few minor and simple suggestions to the hotel to make it even better:
- spend a small amount of money to improve the wifi because it is almost nonfunctional; the routers are too far away (Very weak signal)
- don't charge extra for the safe in the room; That is nickel and diming and most other hotels include this at no extra charge.
- put some air freshener in the bathroom to counteract the odour that sometimes is there.

Love the fact that all rooms have sea views and private terraces. The garden and outdoor pool area is lovely. Fantastic setting and fantastic views from the bar restaurant and public areas.
The rooms are not modern but we loved ours. The only one thing we would of liked was a kettle provided. Once we got used to the layout of the hotel which is built into the cliff it was great. Lots of stairs and lifts. Breakfast buffet good selectiion. Staff friendly and helpful.

This place is pretty cool, it’s in a very nice beach town, very nice breakfast and all the rooms have great views. The place is an architect’s dream. Some of the old rooms are plane, and a little old, but well maintained and clean. Custom service was great. We stayed one night.

Great location across from the beach with 2 nice swimming pools. They have a nice breakfast buffet. During our stay only 1 of the 3 coffee machines was working. We were tired the first night and opted for pizza at the bar...terrible. The next night we ate at the beach - The Tap House. Excelent. Sauna and Turkish bath.... not worth the time. Overall this was a very nice hotel and we enjoyed our stay.

We really liked the location and were really pleased with the service. Since our 1st night was so good we booked a 2nd. Unfortunately we were made to move rooms. The second room was not so clean and not kept up at all. Such a shame. Also, in the process we forgot a bag of dirty clothes on the back of the 1st rooms door...It was never recovered even though it was only hours difference. All said it was an ok stay and we liked the funky mid century vibe. Didnt use the pool but it looked pretty. Parking was a definite plus.

faded glory with wonderful potential

i think this is an old favourite for its customer base. it is a capsule of the 70s, even before as enthusiasts of mid-century furniture may know.
the hotel has accumulated over the years and it is eccentric to get around.
they have an amazing accumulation of modern art.

the coffee is undrinkable and in fact awful to even look at.
the bar has a perfect South East Asian Colonial verandah outside and 70s capsule inside. service impeccable.
housekeeping very good.
original wing neglected, rooms small, little comfort. much of grounds and outside areas around rooms are neglected with weeds taking root.
it just needs some investment. and tlc

I am not sure why this hotel has good reviews. We went during off season but overall it is extremely dated and should be downgraded from 4*.

Things of note:
- The hotel is very old and was built in 3 wings. The wings don't connect in any way! There are 3 separate elevators to get anywhere. It is a maze. If you stay in the east wing you would have to take one set of elevators to the beach, another to the restaurant, and yet another to the gym going through the lobby. Confusing and annoying.
-Dated facilities and weird hours. The indoor pool was huge but a creepy dark mass that had no pool chairs or towels provided. It was like they don't even try to have normal service in the off season. Lights are totally out and triggered by motion...good for environment but creates a creepy desolate atmosphere.
- We were not given a room with an ocean view upon check in despite the place being nearly empty, and they gave us a twin room instead of full bed though we are a couple. Changing rooms took almost an hour due to slowness and the weird layout described above. Very unthoughtful front desk.
- Rooms were very basic, beds not nice or updated. Teeny narrow tub. Conditioner and body wash not provided--just some soap and shampoo. Again how is this 4*s?

The pro of the hotel is undeniably its pretty ocean views. It also had on site secure parking and is close to Sesimbra beach and restaurants (5min drive, 12min walk). But it needs serious upgrades...do not expect 4* accommodations.

A Gem by the Sea

Beautiful seaside town the hotel is perfectly place opposite the beach 🏖 but it is tricky to get to as you drive down from above. Depending which level you are on depends if you catch 1or 2 lifts so it can be a bit of a struggle with big bags. Rooms a little bit tired but suited our purposes and had a nice balcony overlooking the beach. No kettle in the room. The staff were excellent and couldn’t have been more helpful. Breakfast was awesome in a restaurant with a great view. We were there in winter so it was rather quiet. Would certainly recommend.

the hotel has a great location beautiful views of the garden and ocean. It's ok for a short stay, the rooms are very outdated, not soundproof and smell musky, our AC did not really work. no coffee maker - which appears to be one of the missing items in all of Portugal. There is no service to make your stay special, on the day of the departure the breakfast service keep the doors looked until 7AM, while there were about 10 - 15 people waiting to get coffee before heading to the airport, unbelievable.

A room with a view.

My room was a little bit dated inside but was spacious and comfortable, and had a very nice view of the beach and sea from inside and from the large balcony. Everything was clean and worked correctly. I think that other recently renovated rooms are available if one pays more, but I paid a low price when compared to the rack rate at the desk. My bed was a bit firm for my taste, but some people would prefer that. It was in good condition as was the linen.
The pools (indoor and out) were both good but unfortunately the sauna was out of order. The lawns were also nicely maintained but some path areas showed a little lack of attention. There are many places to sit, both inside and out, to enjoy the views and the sunshine.
The town and seafront was an easy walk from the hotel once one had navigated the two lifts and two sets of stairs one needs to take to get down to beach level.
Parking was available but was nearly full even at the end of September. I dont know what happens in high season.
Breakfast was acceptable for such a large hotel but not up the very high standard of some other smaller places I stayed in.
All in all I would be very happy to return to this hotel and to Sesimbra itself.

Would not recommend

If you are a fan of the sixties you will love the Hotel.
Mass tourism, enormous hotel
Loud, get a croom on the higher levels as otherwise traffic and street noise is too noisy.
In desperate need of renovation.
Breakfast was of very poor quality, pool too small for this hotel.
Beach nice and pretty view of it from the room, better to go out of season, nice and empty.. over all 3,5 out of 10. Price rectifies a little

Spectacular view

Hotel is very clean, staff is very helpfull and speak perfect english. The hotel is a little run down, could use furniture renovation, but the view is spectacular so the old furniture didn't even matter. Breakfast buffet was generous. Lot better than anything in US. I would recomend for sure!

This is the 4th or 5th time we have stayed at the Hotel Do Mar. This time the breakfast service was particularly poor. The hot food selection - bacon, eggs, sausages was not kept topped up sufficiently. If there was bacon there was no eggs or vice versa. Some days neither option and on one day we waited almost 40 minutes before the staff replenished. If you tried to ask the restaurant staff for extra they just grunted and pushed past you as they were too busy clearing tables. They really do need to look at the system.

Apart from that the hotel is in a great position but is a little dated in some areas. This time we had a room in the west wing which was bigger than the usual rooms in the east wing.

Overall facilities are fine and front desk staff very helpful and friendly.

Peaceful serene and beautiful.

We had a wonderful time. Very beautiful, serene, and peaceful. We were celebrating our 50th wedding Anniversary. It was very quiet due to being off season. We got around on the bus for side trips. Perfect.

Classic Portuguese hotel overlooking the beach

Constructed in 1963, the hotel has changed little over the years...and that's not a bad thing necessarily. Hotel staff are excellent, premises are very clean and well kept, and the location overlooking the beach and harbour of Sesimbra is fantastic. First visited this hotel in 1980...and things have not changed much since then...like stepping back into the past. On the down side, there are chairs in the room...but they are literally child-size. And don't think about TV too much because the screen size is like a small PC monitor: both quirks of a charming, old-style hotel. And last, the hotel breakfast service is very basic...and don't drink the coffee. All that said, I would certainly stay here again.
