Needs a major upgrade

Courtyard chain has been a preferred hotel for my stays in Johannesburg.

While the location of their properties which I has stayed multiple times (Sandton & Rosebank) is very good, rooms are very spacious, the staff is very courteous the biggest let down over my past 2/3 stays has been downgrade of their rooms in terms of furniture, maintenance, look and feel. They are dated and need a major upgrade.

While room design is dates, Pre-Covid I seldom found broken door handles, Iron, pantry items, etc.

There is an Urgent need to upgrade else they will lose a loyal customer.

Food and drink service excellent… albeit a bit slow

Pool looked lovely and clean, we didn’t go in as it was too chilly but June is their winter

Rooms are excellent, mum and dad with an 8 year old and the set up was perfect!

These are not hotel rooms… these are apartments so 2 separate bedrooms both with Ensuite and one with a bath it was great for us! Felt very safe, all area was gated and secure and all drivers scanned and sign in for Ubers etc

Upside: Spacious rooms. Good breakfast. Internet worked fine. Easy walking distance to shops, restaurants. Free parking.
Downside: No water to shower last day, not even to flush toilet! Bed was quite hard, so quite uncomfortable

Standards are going down

I have been staying at Courtyard Hotels in South Africa for many years and have been a loyal customer since 2014.

However, this time around I found that the standards have gone down. The rooms need upgrade as they are dated, many things do not function properly or are damaged.

The TV offers very limited options and I did have some time as I was at the hotel on the weekend.

Unless a substantial upgrade is not done, I will not be staying with Courtyard hotels in the future

I am used to better standard from Courtyard in my earlier stays.

Have given them good rating as they too are just coming off Covid closure and challenges thereof.

Breakfast menu also is curtailed.

Would like a better health club / gym and a restaurant with wider array of choices.

Very comfortable and super clean rooms with all the basic necessities.

Friendly staff. Garden’s beautifully maintained.

Neds maintenance the dining chairs were falling apart and needs railings in the bath/shower and. Permanent glass so water doesn’t sluice on the toilet as the glass flap was not staying closed.

We booked online and we assumed breakfast was included. This was not the case. Upon checking in we were told to pay an extra 10usd for breakfast. However after a few heavy discussions we agreed we would be allowed one breakfast for our 4 day trip. We were also told that there is a bar / lounge area. This was not the case. We had to order our drinks and get our own ice from the ice machine. I found that service was poor with the front staff and had to keep speaking to higher management to resolve issues. Staff at the hotel were friendly but cleaning staff kept bursting into the room without proper knocking.... Assume it shouldn't be 3 times....once I was fast asleep and was woken up as we had a very early start. This was at 5pm. I would like to stay there again, location is good but finding value for money is lacking.

The hotel was small and very nice, and if it were not for the two problems we had, I would highly recommend. There is no elevator which is a real disadvantage if you have trouble walking, which I do.
Second, you can not get food in the hotel after 8pm. However, you can order off a menu from a restaurant next door, and they have good and prompt delivery.

Nice alternative to usual high-rise monoliths

If you don't like your hotels to be corridors & doors as far as the eye can see, this is a nice change. Low-level, apartment-style rooms give a much more open feel - you get a fridge (mine was rather enthusiastic and kept trying to freeze my water), toaster, kettle & microwave. There's also a couple of TVs & an international power adapter socket on the wall in the lounge. Breakfast had a good selection of cold stuff, cereals & cooked items. I ate a light meal on Monday evening in the upstairs lounge but this isn't available on every evening - there are many restaurants less than 10 mins walk away in Nelson Mandela Square. No gym & the outdoor pool is small & unheated, but this hotel is more like holiday apartments than a traditional business hotel. And there were weaver bird nests in the trees outside my room, which was cool. Very friendly, helpful staff too.

Great value Clean and convenient..

A 2 day stop over prior to flying back to the UK. Picked the Courtyard due to its location near Sandton City/Mandela Square ....10 mins walk or a free shuttle is available which we used on the first day to pick us up after 10 in the evening.... stayed in a 2 room suite which was clean and very spacious Breakfast is available but we enjoyed the short walk to Sandton with its many food options...the laundry facility was excellent we will definitely return if we happen to visit Joburg in the future

The hotel is good for a short stay for business travelers or families. It is a two block walk to Sandton City Mall and Mandela Square. Please note the pool is very small and the doors/walls are far from sound proofed.

The hotel is more like a campus of apartments all behind a gate (like everything in Johannesburg).

The stay was amazing except for the unfortunate incident where my daughter was bruised by a sharp edged shower corner that was attended to immediately upon reporting. A complete handy safety kit is always necessary under such circumstances.

The internet was dodgy in the first room that I had been offered and they quickly moved me to another room. I think they just need to fix their internet issue and not to inconvenience customers once they unpack and start doing other things. On the most part the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Quiet hotel in mid Sandton

This is a gated small hotel in a garden setting. Our suite had a separate bedroom with queen bed, and a living room with TV, wet bar and refrigerator. Dishes and utensils were provided. Breakfast buffet was one of the best we encountered in South Africa. If you have an opportunity to pre purchase breakfast at booking for less than 150R do it.

Comfortable hotel but needs room service help

Overall, this hotel was a great stay especially for the price. The location was very close to Mandela Square and Sandton City and the room sizes were great. The one major issue is that there is no onsite room service. They provide you with menus for hotels, which you have to call. What they don't tell you is that they charge you for actually calling the hotels from your room. Though the price was not astronomical, it was a bit annoying to see the charges on my bill at checkout. Be upfront and transparent with future guests would be my recommendation.
