The hotel staff were really lovely - friendly and helpful. They agreed to keep reception open for us when our flight was delayed and didnt rush us in when we finally got there. They also really helped us with our onward journey plans and there was no problem with leaving our bags during the day while we wandered round the city.

The location is great - close to the centre and by the canal. The staff were helpful, too. My single room had no exterior window, but they changed it when I asked. The decor of the hotel is very old fashioned, and the room small, but it was clean

Lovely little gem of a hotel.

Amazing location in the heart of the old town with many restaurants and shops only a short walk away. The hotel is quirky but that is not a bad thing as it is very original and more boutique than the standard chain hotels. Staff incredibly friendly. Minor issues such as the bathroom radiator not working but if you left door open it would get heat from the room so no great issue. WiFi really strong and can even stream.

Friendly hotel in a quiet, but central location

The Hotel is centrally located just a ten minute walk from the train station, then another ten minute walk to the town centre.
A great place from which to see all the sights.
And if you feel like a change, both Florence and Venice can be easily visited in a day by train from Bologna.
When you're finished for the day there's lots of affordable bars and trattorias nearby the hotel.
The hotel has all the features you'd expect at this price point - PLUS a kettle in your room - essential if you're a Brit and must have tea in the morning!
Staff are friendly and very helpful.
The picture of the Canal (one of the historic hidden treasures of Bologna) does actually show the rear of the hotel.
Top tip: follow the Via Bertiera to the far end (three minute walk) and there's a CONAD supermarket for snacks and everything you've forgotten to bring.

Love Bologna and hotel good value.

Great location between station and Piazza Maggiore. Small hotel but be aware that there is no air conditioning in October and our room was hot and stuffy. The hotel did provide us with a fan but this did little to help. The room we had was small and the bed a bit firm for our liking. Easy walking to everything. Can’t comment on breakfast as it wasn’t included in our rate.

Good choice in good location in Bologna.

Although the hotel is somewhat dated and worn, I felt that it perfectly fit in to the ambience. It's a very comfortable and cozy place and I loved the quirkiness of the decor. Staff were all very welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was a bit better than what is typically offered in Italy. I thought that the location was very convenient.

In general I saw little of the property. I was in town 1 night travelling on business via the airport. Taxi to the hotel was 18-22 Euro. I arrived at 7pm and departed before 9am the next morning. I selected the property based on the reviews. I was in room 1 immediately across from reception. The room is simple and basic. A bit larger than many European rooms and opens onto a courtyard. I enjoyed breakfast downstairs. In general the property is what one might expect from any property between the train station and the center. The gentleman at the desk was extremely friendly and helpful. His recommendation for a single business person looking for a simple dinner was on point. The young lady in the morning was equally friendly. One item to note is that there is a 1 hour lead to book a taxi. For me not an issue but notably different from what some with frequent business travel might expect. This is not, generally, a business hotel, but for my purposes of not wanting a business hotel for at least one night on a 2 week \"new hotel every night\" trip, this was a pleasant and refreshing departure.

Good quality for the price we paid, old hotel with character in a typical old Bologna building, not posh but not scruffy. Great location in the old town close to all the restaurants and bars. Only 10 to 15 minutes walk from the bus and train station. Would definitely stay again.

Step back a century to luxe

I felt like we were in a gorgeous black and white romantic movie, will never forget the one night we spent there, I was crying for about twenty minutes after we left for a four star hotel with all the mod cons. I just didn't want to leave. Hot water not really that good, but you can't beat the atmosphere, the light, the friendliness, the furnishings the eccentricity.

Hot with no WiFi

On our European vacation, we were fortunate to spend one night with our family in Bologna. We booked Il Canal because they had a quad room that could accommodate all of us, the location was good, and the price was reasonable. If you like eclectic, old, European-style hotels, you will find it adorable (despite the smallest shower ever), and the location is good - just a short walk to the Piazza Maggiore. Unfortunately, that’s not enough. We arrived on a hot afternoon, and they hadn’t turned the air conditioning on in the room. We turned it on immediately, but it never cooled off the entire evening, night and morning. Being in the room was miserable. The hallways and lobbies aren’t air conditioned at all (or it wasn’t on despite 95 degree temps), so there was no relief to be had. To top it off, despite the fact that they advertise WiFi, there was none in our room. First, they insisted there was. Then, they said it was because we were trying to connect too many devices (not the case). Finally, the front desk clerk just admitted there was nothing he could do. When we tried to watch TV instead, we discovered they had no English stations. All-in-all, an uncomfortable night. I would not go back.

The hotel is near the canal but not visible from any rooms. It is clean and decorated in a quirky artsy style, which we liked. It is centrally located, so conveniently walking distance from most historic and cultural sites. It is also next door to a sex toy shop (nothing exceptionally explicit in the windiws) and the neighborhood has a lot of graffiti. If you’re traveling with kids, this may or may not bother you.
The room and bathroom were clean, even though it’s all a bit old and there was some mold on the shower door and the plastic toilet flush button kept falling off the wall when you pressed it.
The staff are very helpful and, although the WiFi works, it is not strong enough to reach every room. It didn’t work in ours but did in the hallway.
For the price and location, it’s worthwhile.

Friendly hotel in good location

Great location. Just off via Indepenza about 15 minutes walk from the train station and 10 minutes from the main square. Friendly staff & quirky hotel. Small room but was good to have a kettle to make hot drinks. We found some lovely family run trattorias in the surrounding streets. Bologna is an amazing place & lots going on. If you want good value, you can't go wrong here. We didn't rate the breakfast & preferred to eat out anyway as there are so many choices.

Comfortable stay in Bologna

We stayed for 4 nights.Large bedroom and ensuite shower room, both were kept clean. Good breakfast of cereals, fruit, pastries, bread,rolls, yoghurts, jam, honey,cold meats and cheese. Staff were friendly and recommended places to eat. Only slight issue was that room number 1 was opposite reception so might be noisy if you wanted an early night. Hotel was in the centre of the town but in a quiet area. It was within a short walk of the twin towers and many of the historic sites. Window shutters and comfortable bed ensured we had a good night's sleep.

This staff was friendly when we arrived and happily gave us a discount on breakfast as we were under the impression it was free. Beds were clean and ceilings were high. I wish the AC was a little bit stronger (newer) as the room never quite got cool enough.

The manager and his fiancée were perfect hosts and the hotel fantastic value. It may not be a 5* hotel but it gets top ratings from us. It was a 5 min walk from the centre in a very quiet side street, no noise at night. We have already recommended it to our friends and if we go to Bologna again we would have no hesitation at staying here again

Fun and friendly hotel

This hotel was perfectly situated with 5 minutes walk to the wonderful historic buildings and museums of Bologna and 10 minutes walk to the station to get easy trains to Ravenna, Parma etc. an excellent base. It isnt the most luxurious of hotels, but the people were really friendly and helpful and the decor was querky and original. We would certainly stay there again.

Basic hotel in central location

The hotel is very conveniently located not far from the train station or the main piazza of Bologna. I had a single room, which felt quite small because the bed was not single and dated heavy furniture was taking up most of the space. The room and bathroom were clean, but I would maybe recommend less air freshener as it hangs in the air for hours, which is quite annoying in a small space. The breakfast was very basic, I would probably choose to go to one of the cafés nearby instead if you have a few spare euros to spend.

Good comfortable central hotel

This hotel was ideal for our 4 night stay in Bologna. Not particularly fancy but it was clean, comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was nice, with the usual pastries, fruit and so on.
If you are a lover of the colour orange (which I actually am so was happy) then this is the ideal hotel for you - the rooms are fully kitted out in the terracotta tones which the city itself is famous for. We liked the quirky décor and artefacts lining the entrance and corridors too.
The location of the hotel was great as it was just by the central street, Via dell'Indipendenza, which has lots of shops and cafes, and is an easy 10 minute or so walk to Piazza Maggiore and the central city. We had seen a couple of reviews that said that the street where the hotel is located, Via Bertiera, is a bit dodgy and dingy (possibly because of the sex boutique next door..?), but we didn't find it so at all. The entrance is in the shadow of the building somewhat but we found the area perfectly safe and welcoming. Perhaps do just be prepared for some interesting window views when walking past the shop each day!

The hotel is in a great location in Bologna. All the sites and shopping are within walking distance. The hotel staff was absolutely wonderful with recommendations for dinners - we had one of the best dinners of our trip based on their recommendations - and gave us ideas for best places to visit during our short stay. We had asked for twin beds but since those rooms were taken, they upgraded us to a triple room. Very spacious but it faced a street which was very loud as the windows had to be kept open as the air conditioning didn't work. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

Comfortable hotel in central Bologna

I couldn't fault the hospitality at Il Canale. I arrived fairly late and Giuseppe got me settled into my room as quickly as possible, deferring the check in until the following morning. He was always polite and helpful, and because I chose to forego breakfast each day so I could get out and take photographs in the morning light reduced my price because he didn't feel good about charging me.

Good value but limited comfort in central Bologna.

This hotel is in urgent need of an upgrade. It looks as though the management has decided to let things go a bit further before undertaking major renovations - so, for the moment, it is all a bit run down. The room I had was extremely dark (not so uncommon in single rooms, admittedly).The service is haphazard. One big negative (for me at least) is the fact that there is no-one at reception between 11.00 and 7.00 in the morning. The card you are given when you check in tells you that from 11.00 to 7.00, \"the staff of Hotel Tre Vecchi will answer you\" and gives you the phone number of the Hotel Tre Vecchi. Although I have travelled extensively I have never come across this kind of arrangement before and I don't think that it is satisfactory. Nevertheless, purely in price terms, it is good value.

One night in Bologna

The hotel wasn't terrible, but it's an older hotel and maybe some of the rooms were updated, but not the one we stayed in. It was a last minute booking and cheap, so we got what we paid for. Bathroom was HUGE so that's a plus, but moldy in parts of shower so made me wonder about what we couldn't see and overall cleanliness. I just saw that there's a Zanhotel and Zanhotel II - maybe the first one is nicer? The staff was super nice at check in/out, and was probably the best part of it. Location was sketchy but that's my fault for not looking into the area more before booking. Good for one night but I don't know about staying more than one evening.

Affordable middle of Bologna

The hotel was literally 2 mins from the main road in Bologna so walking around was perfect. The room was compact but comfortable - great shower nice and hot. We were on the ground floor and streetside which was a little noisy but understandable given we were in the middle of the city. Good security after hours. A very quaint stylish hotel.

There was no room for our first night, so he got us into a 4 star hotel round the corner, and had a room ready for us the next day for the rest of our stay.

We stayed at the Canale for 3 nights in September. The hotel is in a very good position for exploring the city and there are lots of places to eat and lovely shops in the surrounding area. Our room was very clean and nicely decorated although the beds were a little hard. The bathroom was a good size and also very clean. Breakfast was good although not a huge choice probably because it's a small hotel but adequate for our needs even so. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There's no bar in the hotel but we found a nice little bar in the main street opposite to have a nightcap before bed.. the weather was lovely so it was nice to sit outside and watch the world go by. All in all we really enjoyed our stay at the Canale and in Bologna; a beautiful city and a nice hotel.

Good location but quad rooms have small fourth bed

The hotel was easy to find, being just off the main shopping street down from the station. It is 15 minutes from the station and 7 from the main square in the centre of town. Everything is walkable - we had a day and a half and did everything easily.
Our quadruple room was clean and comfortable, but the fourth bed is only suitable for a child up to about 5ft 4 as it is short and narrow. The aircon was pretty ineffective, but we could get a breeze through the room so it wasn't too hot. We left windows open at night but were woken early by a lot of noise outside the hotel both mornings.
Breakfast wasn't included but was cheap and worth the money - simple but enough to keep you going. The staff were generally helpful, but not when it came to restaurants as they just recommended one run by a friend nearby which has so-so reviews. We struggled to find good restaurants, only finding one on our doorstop as we were leaving (Restaurant Enzo on junction of Via Galleria and Via Riva di Reno).
Overall very good value for a quad room - a few niggles but we still enjoyed our stay and the location suited us well.

Wishi had more time to explore this city! The hotel was quiet and in a good location: halfway between the train station and town centre. The only downside to the hotel could be the old, heavy furnishings but personally, I really enjoyed the gaudy decor! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly!

Great location on quaint side street. Adequate rooms, clean but showing some wear. Carpets need a steam cleaning. Breakfast is minimal (no eggs, sausage, bacon, waffles) but considering the price, to be expected. WiFi worked great in our room; others have complained but probably depends on the location of the room. Our room was very quiet and the mattress was comfortable.

Arrived after long drive from Salzburg. Luckily all cars were parked at the football stadium & the roads clear into the centre. Hotel found easily, checked in & parked car in underground park. 2 rooms booked were very big & spacious. Breakfasts were really good & rooms were tidied. Place looks tired but this is deceptive, we really enjoyed our stay.

Hotel in the centre of Bologna, very handy. I got the room opposite the reception, my door was less than 2 m away from the front desk and I could hear everything that was going on. They said that they didn't have any other room. However the room was lovely and I was quite tired and had a good night sleep.

Convenient and close to center of town

We were here for only 1 night; the hotel was full so we were given a very large room that could comfortably sleep 5. As others had reported, the room was \"worn\" and slightly shabby but clean. The floor was carpeted, which I don't like due to the fact that carpets tend to seem dirty and to hold odors. There was a strong odor of disinfectant/deodorizer spray.

You can't choose better

Absolutely lovely hotel in walking distance from the train station and main attractions. Big spacious room was perfectly clean and easily fit three persons and uncounted number of luggage without making us feel uncomfortable. Located on tiny quite street without any noise around.

But the main treasure of this hotel is their stuff from absolutely lovely cleaning ladies who return us watch, which we forgot after check out to amazing receptionist Laura who helped us to organise out trips and the most important she is so kind, nice and sunny person, that coming back to the hotel felt like coming back home.

Will stay only at this hotel during my trips to Bologna and would higly recommend it to everyone

Nice hotel with easy access to places of interest.

This hotel is on a quiet street and is easy to access on foot from the airport bus stop at the railway station. There are a number of excellent bars and restaurants close to the hotel and major sites can easily be walked to. The hotel was great for our needs despite the tired appearance of the hotel decor. During our stay the owners were looking to improve the breakfast arrangements which are in any event fine; we were asked for our recommendations which we appreciated.

Enjoyed the stay. Gave the feeling of being in old style hotel but updated and huge bathroom, room was very clean although the carpet needs to changed. No english channels on the TV - those would be my 2 complaints. otherwise the breakfast was good, plentiful and attended to. The lady at the desk was helpful and so friendly.

Nice romantic location in the Bolognia city centre

The hotel room was specious and the view on the canal was quite charming, although surrounding houses need a bit of façade renovation. The check in was little bit slow, but the service was nice. We had a nice chat with the maid, whose English was quite good. Surrounding area is good for high-street shopping and there are some nice restaurants around. It is only about 5-7 minutes walk to the main square and about 10-15 minutes walk to the train station (where you can take a bus to the airport that takes about 25min and cost 6 Euros). Overall the style of the hotel is very traditional Italian and old-fashioned, but this is the romantic theme we have been looking for.

Using the app, had to book a single room because travelling solo, although a double would have been the same price. Room clean (but had been smoked in very recently), but v small and the wardrobe door would not open fully because room so small (other fixed furniture in the way), so limited access to in-room safe.

The staff was helpful and polite, the room we had was spacious and comfortable. It's an old building and things are a little worn, but it didn't bother us. The bathroom was clean, the sheets good quality. One of the nights the noise from outside was loud, but it wasn't the hotels fault!

Near great restaurants

The hotel was exactly what we pictured. Very common European room but slightly bigger. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was fine, shower a little small. The staff was helpful and the breakfast was okay. The location was easy to get to from the train station and there was a great juice/health place at the corner and at the other corner there was a row of amazing restaurants.

Very conveniently situated hotel in the old town

While not having some of the facilities of a larger hotel, Il Canale more than compensates by being in a very good position, close to the sites, restaurants and shops of central Bologna. The hotel is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the main railway station and aerobus stop. We would certainly stay at this hotel again when visiting Bologna.

Very friendly service

Start was somehow depressive, because I got for the first night the room number 2 , which was noise and WARM! (Some other visitor had blamed the same thing earlier). However, when I informed about the matter to personnel they offered a double room (room 23, perfect in all means) without any extra cost to me for following two nights.

Overall good experience

Overall good experience. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was very clean. Hotel is very dated, but this adds to its charm. Breakfast is a traditional Italian hotel breakfast, everything was as to be expected. However, the breads seemed old. I did overhear the front desk mention to a guest the breads were delivered daily, so evidently they are just baked to be hard and stale. Wifi was not working, or I could not get it to work.
Really those are my only complaints.
great location near shops and main boulevard.
I travel to Italy once a year for business and have walked down this main street many times, having no idea this little hotel was in the area.
It is next to a sex shop, but ignoring that, location is great. I was traveling alone, and felt perfectly safe.
I have stayed larger, nicer hotels in Bologna. But I was pleased with my experience at Il Canale.

Central location - clean room in good condition

We needed a quad room and were given the ground floor room facing the road - so for privacy not able to open windows or blinds. Staff able to relocate us to a higher floor without problem. Helped to make our stay much more enjoyable. Surprised that access to Internet was expensive when most hotels in other cities offer it for free.

Nice property with potential but wait for the redo

Beautiful room, great location, but the air conditioning was not working. When we asked for repairs the hotel sent a repair person who knocked on the machine. Following this repair we were told the a/c was working at maximum and that it would cool down during the night. I did not appreciate being told the a/c was working when it was clearly broken. There was also a lack of hot water which was remedied by the morning - not soon enough for my daughter who ended up enjoying a nice cold shower!

Quiet, central and comfortable

Travelling on my own to attend a film festival, I found this to be a quiet, characterful and friendly hotel in a superb central location. Both the room and the bathroom were particularly spacious.

Interesting location next to a sex shop.
Otherwise - or maybe as a result of the above - very conveniently placed.
Easy walk from the railway station and from the main piazza, and virtually all of it under cover of the porticos.

Wonderful home base for 10 days

Il Canale, on one of the last open canals, was a great find. Reasonably priced, with good sized rooms and large bathrooms (with a big shower, esp. for Italy). Location was within close walking distance of Piazza Maggiore, and most everything else. Also close to restaurants and grocery stores. Room was cleaned and made up by a conscientious maid, Sonia, who also managed the breakfast details. Decent breakfast, with GF items on request. Day time desk staff was really helpful with directions, train schedules, etc. All in all a recommended hotel, good value.

Comfortable rooms, very helpful staff

This hotel is perfect for a few days in Bologna. Our room was large by any standard, and it was well maintained. The hotel staff was very pleasant and helpful. The choices for breakfast were limited, but there was plenty of fruit, which we like, and the hotel made arrangements to have gluten-free bread available for my wife who has celiac disease.

Great little hotel in the heart of Bologna

Great hotel, neighbourhood is a little bit seedy but don't let that put you off, very safe and couple of steps off the main drag. Owner/receptionist extremely nice and friendly, couldn't help enough and gave great suggestions for local restuarants.

Size doesn't matter!

Character, friendliness and situation. These are the main assets of this hotel. Set in a narrow street just off the main thoroughfare, the hotel is within walking distance of all the main sights.
The staff were most helpful and friendly;printing out train timetables, giving directions or looking up information about the weather.

A good, value for money choice

Good, comfortable. V good location just 10mins walk from the bus station and a few minutes to the main Piazza. Staff friendly enough, helpful when asked questions, plenty of hot water and beds comfortable. They allowed us to keep our luggage in the hotel for several hours between checking out and leaving for the airport. All round a good experience.

Nice hotel

The hotel is really nice and in a great location, close to the city center, shops and restaurants. There is an erotic shop next door, but never mind, it's not a big deal. The people at the reception were really kind and helpful and our staying was great. Unfortunately, the breakfast was not the best one (coffee was not that good!). I'd definitely come back.

Very comfortable

Accessible to station, comfortable beds, some nice things for breakfast and plentiful, bathroom worked well and v clean, lovely linens. Downside - orangey decor, darkish, wifi quite patchy. A really good place to sleep in - not so much to hang out - but that's what Bologna's for.

Nice location, but a bit old and dissapointing.

My room was across from the desk and was quite loud at certain times. I was there for the new year and wanted to rest before being out late to celebrate. I was unable to rest due to all the noise of people outside my door. Room stayed hot, and even though it was quite cold out I had to leave window open to keep the room from being way too hot.

The hotel is in a great location for being on the main street of Bologna.

Not as advertised but would stay here again

1st upon arrival we were informed that there was an 'inconvenience' with our reservation and it was necessary to be moved to another hotel. We ended up being able to actually stay here though, but this practice seems to happen quite often with some Italian hotels (not good when you book way in advance and choose particular hotels for specific reasons). Our room did not have the items listed in the description while booking and maybe that is due to the 'inconvenience'? Items such as - down comforter bedding - no, ergonomic chair - no, the only chair in the room was an old upholstered wooden one (a desk chair really wouldn't have fit in the room anyways) The entry way of the hotel is very charming, the room was outdated and I can deal with that if the beding materials were better. Breakfast was adequate and the location is great to be close enough to the train station and city center to walk to both. The only reason why this place gets 3 stars is that our room was actually fairly quiet, clean, and a decent sized bathroom. The staff also was as helpful as they could be since I don't think that the reservation issue was their fault.

A restful retreat in the city

This is a very PINK hotel! Everything is beautifully colour coordinated with attractive pictures on the walls. Our room was very spacious and quiet. The hotel is just off the main road up from the station, but in a quiet side street and very near the pedestrianised main squares. The staff were very careful of hotel security.

Great little hotel in Bologna

My stay was very short--just long enough to hop a plane home, but the location was great--a quiet little street just a block off a big, loud, pedestrian avenue that leads right to the main square (about 4 blocks). Very good location, nice room, helpful staff, small hotel--just what you hope to find for three stars.

Excellent hotel

I arrived at 8.30 am to ask if I could leave my luggage for the day, and the nice lady on the desk said that as my room was free I could put my things in it straight away. All the staff were pleasant and helpful. I had a single room, which was quite big and had a good sized bathroom. There was an excellent breakfast.
